X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 29, 2007, 10:42pm

I'll fill in the details tomorrow.

Title: Flyin' High Again
On Sale: Wednesday

The X-Patriots revist the ghosts of missions past when a shocking offer is received on behalf of the winged Shi'ar from way back in issue #2. Now, we can't promise Ol'jin will kill Chi, but we can promise he'll at least threaten to rip his tongue out.

Amelia would miss Mike's tongue!

«BUT! He won't be able to speak without his tongue. That's a huge plus.»

The Juber…IN SPACE!!!

The X-Patriots are called to a conference room by Manta, who seems to be pacing nervously. Which may strike several of you as odd because she typically glides from place to place, and generally appears relatively stoic.

«Check in, interact, plot set-up, nothing too big.»

Nicolette hovered in. She glanced at Manta crossly, but greeted her with amazing politeness and a smile, then sat down to wait for the others to arrive.

I walk in, spotting Nicolette and Kalvin first thing. "Hey guys!"

"Hello, Roxanne!"

Mike slinks in, hanging in the back of the room, hands in pockets, head low.

Manta turns to the team.

"We've received a…transmission regarding the situation on Kl'tu 3, which you might remember…"

She moves to a display panel.

"You might want to be sitting down for this."

Mike slumps down lower on the wall, close enough to sitting.

He wavs at Roxie. He sends her We'll talk later…I'm just a little down, no big deal

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

Manta pauses.

"It might be very good news. But I don't think it is. You'll have to see it to understand."

I barely know. Considering I understand half the crap that comes out of Mike when he's in better moods than this, that says something.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 9:41am

Manta presses a button, and an image resolves. Deathbird.

"Hey kids," she says. "I was looking over your old mission reports and everything, and they're so gosh darn cute. Anyway, I was reading about that whole thing with Kl'tu 3, and you know, my heart really goes out to those people, since, you know, I was persecuted for having wings too, and all, so…I hunted around Kree space a little, found an uninhabited…that means no one lives there…planet, and thought you little rascals might want to check it out for possible transfer of the civilization. See, when the nega-bomb…that's a big explodey thing that wiped out most of the Kree…well, when it went off, it decimated…that means killed a lot…of the Kree population universally…that means everywhere. So, this planet's empty, but it's a nice place…used to be a vacation spot or something, near as I can figure. So, I've told Lilandra that I'm requesting your services to first verify…that means make sure…that it's a fitting planet, then transfer the refugees over. We'll be waiting. Co-ordinates…that means location, where the place is…have been beamed to your captain. Deathbird out."

She waves condescendingly and disappears.

"Oh…an exploration mission."

I sink down in my seat…obviously disappointed there was no mention of Amazons, green or otherwise.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

"Why would this not be good news?" asked Nicolette thoughtfully.

Well, other than how incredibly suspicious the whole thing sounded.

"Deathbird…" says Manta, trailing off for a second, "…is a very hard person to read, child, and has many machinations. This could very well be good news, but…and I say this privately, as it should not be made public due to it being slightly treasonous…I do not think it wise to trust her."

"If possible, at least."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

Manta pauses again.

"And there's the other issue. You don't have a choice. Deathbird outranks us, and unless we ask Lilandra to overturn the mission, we must take it. And do you think Lilandra would allow us to overturn a mission that your logs specifically requested?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

"I should have you know that we have already plotted a course and will be arriving soon. I just…knew that there was some…personal issues among the Auxiliary, and was not sure I should interrupt those with a mission briefing."

She pauses.

"Report to the bridge in two hours, we will have arrived at the new potential home. It is called La-Guna 5."

She calls up some information on it and walks out.

It's a tropical planet, with light gravity, small cities in good repair but deserted, lots of massive cliffs and other interesting topography. Nico can work the controls to get more information, if necessary.

"What the heck…"
Nicolette tried to get some more information.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:01am

Nico works the controls, and little summaries of the atmosphere, density, and indigineous plants and animals are given. All of it's pretty standard. No crazy monster animals or plants that would kill you, but a wide diversity of flora and fauna. A brief history of the planet as the Shi'ar understand it, which is basically that it was a resort destination for the wealthiest Kree, who owned small villas on the surface. When the nega-bomb went off, those land-owners who survived thought their talents were best used elsewhere, and not in relaxation. The planet has been wholly ceded to the Shi'ar, no Kree still makes claims on the land.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 10:04am

"How is your Shi'ar coming along, Rapt?" asked Nicolette.

She made sure to sound casual, not too innocent and far from condescending.

Mike is pretty much just watching everyone get prepared. He keeps fiddling with his uniform. It feels uncomfortable for some reason.

Rapt continues scanning over what is displayed, translating some, but not enough to satisfy him.

"Its coming along just fine. Yours?"

Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:20am

«Fast forward…of doom!!!»

Hours later…the bridge of the Juber…IN SPACE!!!

Manta is looking out at the planet below, quietly. An incoming transmission informs the team that beam down is imminent, and they find themselves on, quite simply, paradise. They're outside a small restaurant with little patio tables overlooking a tranquil bay. It would remind you of publicity shots of the Carribbean. Sitting at one of the tables, with a tray of Starbolts in front of her, is Deathbird.

"Hi kids," she says with a small wave.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on May 2, 2007, 10:22am

I stare at Deathbird blankly.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding me…"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

"Viceroy. We're surprised you came to take care of this matter personally…"

I just stick my tongue out at her.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:27am

With completely overstated hamfisted acting, Deathbird puts a hand to her chest, and acts incredibly dramatic.

"Oh, how could I not. Your mission reports were so…so…emotional, and those people's plights, well, it was so unfortunate! It tugged on my heartstrings, and I knew that I had to do whatever I could for them. Oh, they're so unfortunate, and I happened to be able to help, and you know what? I found a way to help. Oh, my heart leaps at the possibility of making everything happily ever after."

She smiles somewhat wickedly.

"Have a drink. Or don't. Normally, I don't waste my time with these effeminate things, but since you're all either girls or prepubescent, I figured you might like them. Oh, and do whatever you want, or I can give a tour, or whatever."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 10:30am

"We would prefer to get down to business." Rapt adopts a formal, military-esque tone and posture.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 10:30am

Nicolette glanced at Mike and sent: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:33am

"Business, huh?"

Deathbird stands and slinks over to Rapt, getting incredibly close to him.

"What sort of business? You're here on an inspection, right? Is there anything you'd like to…inspect?"

She rubs up against him slightly.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 10:34am

Never mind, she's NOT a dyke.

Nicolette cleared her throat.
"No, I don't think he's interested in inspecting those matters. I believe he was referring to investigating this planet's suitability. That's why you called us here, after all…"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by K'lar on May 2, 2007, 10:36am

Mike grins at Nic widely.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:36am

Deathbird makes a pouty face at Nico.

"Very well, then, inspect away."

She struts back to the table she was sitting at.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on May 2, 2007, 10:39am

I break from looking at Deathbird all pouty like, and turn to the others once she sits back down.

"So, uh, where do we start?"

Inspecting an entire planet doesn't seem like the simplest of tasks…

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 10:40am

Rapt glances at Deathbird as she walks back away.

"We start with one of the cities. Make sure a section of it is livable, and in range of a food source. If it all checks out, we can move them in."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 10:41am

This was something of a problem… How did one inspect a planet? They could walk and fly around the area a little, but it was still only one area. She couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't a trap, but rather a humongous joke.

"Cities are convenience in general, not a necessity. Roxanne, check the soil. Kalvin, plantlife. I'd send you, Rapt, to take an aerial view of the surroundings, but for reasons of… safety…" She did NOT glance at Deathbird. "…I'll do it myself. You're in command in the meanwhile."

She hovered upwards to fly around a little and take a look.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 10:42am

Rapt suddenly wonders if he could ask Deathbird to shoot her down.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:43am

"Livable?"

Deathbird throws back her head and laughs.

"This place has every amenity known to man."

She snaps her fingers, and music starts playing softly from hidden speakers.

Do you like pina coladas?
Getting lost in the rain…

She snaps them again.

"If there's one thing I never liked about the Kree, it's their love for Terran music. And everything else about them. But anyway, check it out. There are replicators online, water reclamation systems…heck, check out that patch of jungle over there. Some really tasty fruit…I especially like the large green star-shaped ones. All edible."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 10:44am

Nicolette hesitated.
"If this place is so perfect, why hasn't it been brought to use already?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 2, 2007, 10:44am

"All right, I'll head out, then." I make a platform, motioning to Nadia. "You want to come with me?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 10:44am

"And I chose for us to look at a city, Nicolette, because it would already have the infrastructure. As Deathbird said, everything will already be in place. We just need to make sure its all still working correctly."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 10:45am

Deathbird shrugs.

"The Kree have little use for niceties these days. They're busy just trying to re-establish some form of civic pride or whatever. Plus, with only one tenth of them still around…"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 10:45am

"Mmmm, no, Roxanne. It's best we stay together as well as we can."

She didn't take her eyes away from Deathbird.

"I meant by the Shi'ar, actually. When we last visited Kl'tu 3, we were told there were no available planets. Are we to believe that this planet was unknown to you, lost in the chaos of the annexation?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

This place is really nice…he wonders if Amelia would be interested in moving here…they could raise Junior on a world like this. No hatred of mutants. No pollution.

Deathbird stands, walks into the restaurant, and comes back out with the universe's largest bottle of gin.

She starts drinking it straight out of the bottle.

Nicolette was the team powerhouse…

She had failed in that aspect once, even if it was for the greater good, but she didn't want to take a chance again. She couldn't leave - she had to be here in case of any attacks.

Deathbird laughs uproariously, then pauses, looks at Chi seriously for a moment, then laughs some more.

"Terrans," she says between giggles.

Collecting herself, she then says, "Well, then, you should just go off and tap the next piece of space ass that's available to you. I'm way out of your league, by the way."

The more the X-Patriots stay on the planet, the more they realize it is exactly as advertised. There are no problems with the soil, the plant life, the animal life, the atmosphere, the water, the cities, the technology…it's just as Deathbird says.

She continues tossing back the universe's largest bottle of gin, and has turned the music back on. She is singing along badly, which may be intentional, may be the alcohol, or may indicate she really has a bad singing voice. It's hard to tell.

Arruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya
To Bermuda, Bahamas, come on pretty mama…
To Key Largo, Montego, baby why don't we go
Down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast then we'll take it slow.
Thaaaaat's where I wanna go…
Way down to Kokomo.

The thing is… I want everything to work out for the people of Kl'tu 3. But I just don't feel all right having them shipped here just like that. I could never live with myself if something bad happened to them because of us. They've suffered enough…

She considered it for a moment.

Perhaps we should call out a representative of theirs and show this place to them.

Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on May 2, 2007, 1:39pm

"Not a bad idea, I guess. We would have to do it eventually. It's not like they would want to move in without seeing it. Should we run it past *sigh* Deathbird?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 1:40pm

Rapt walks up to Deathbird.

"I'm going to go check out something the Kree wouldn't have accounted for. Would you like to join me on a flight to test the air currents and updrafts?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 1:42pm

Deathbird looks at Rapt sort of sideways.

"Sure, if you think you can keep up."

She takes to the air rather dextrously, given the amount of alcohol she has clearly consumed.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 1:42pm

Nicolette looked casual. She wondered if her thoughts about Rapt selling them out to Deathbird, or just generally plotting something, were founded or just paranoia. Whatever the case, he was being irresponsible.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on May 2, 2007, 1:55pm

I watch Deathbird and (presumably) Rapt take off. Here's hoping he doesn't get stabbed in the back, or front, or however Deathbird likes to do it.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 2, 2007, 1:57pm

I watch with Nadia as they go off. "Um…maybe one of us should follow them. Just in case."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 2, 2007, 1:59pm

"I'd be up for it, though I'm a little worried about, ah, ruining whatever Rapt is trying to do. Which I don't know anything about, since he didn't tell us…"

She glanced at Nadia.
"As air, could you follow them fast enough to keep up without being seen?"

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 2:00pm

Rapt watched her take off, following a few seconds later.

No matter how he looked at it…the planet WAS a good deal. But why?

"Those Shi'ar moving here, would make them your citizens, wouldn't it? I can't imagine you have that many of your people, or even the Kree people, given their population's…troubles. From the looks of the planet, they'll love you for it."

Rapt increased his speed, wagering that Deathbird wouldn't let him go faster than her for long. But still, Rapt made sure to remain within sight of the others. No need to make it easy for her to take him out, if she so wished.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 2:02pm

Deathbird easily loops in front of Rapt.

"Why, yes, they would be in my…Viceroyship, but that's not really here nor there. I just want to help. Really."

She gives a clearly faked empathic expression.

And the air currents and gravity actually make flight on this planet rather enjoyable.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on May 2, 2007, 2:02pm

I can't say that that's a bad idea. I mean, really, you can call me paranoid if you want but she tried to get us killed once already so it isn't like it's unfounded.

"I'll go. They won't even know I'm there."

I quickly shift into air and follow after the pair.

"Make sure to listen in," muttered Nicolette before Nadia took off.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 2, 2007, 2:06pm

"Well…maybe I can fix that." I go outside for a second and form some rock in a construct of Nadia, bringing her back in. "We can just say that she transformed into rock for a little bit, if anyone asks."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 2, 2007, 2:07pm

"Of course. All rulers should be concerned about their people."

Rapt doesn't let it show, but that she out-manouvers him, stings his pride. So he speeds up, but tries not to make it look like he's straining.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 2, 2007, 2:09pm

"Oh, I completely agree."

Deathbird flies backwards, at the same pace as Rapt moving forwards.

"You see? Perfect planet for those like us. The air currents…the topography…there's a neat cliff over there that's got several natural…openings, basically, a fun stunt course. We should try it. You'll love it."

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on May 2, 2007, 2:17pm

Everything in the air proceeds as well as possible. Deathbird makes small talk, and it really is a fun place to fly. If there's anything specific that needs to be addressed, let me know.

We only have your best interests in mind, and we're trying very hard to maintain that position despite your continued attacks. The Shi'ar come to an agreement with Nicolette, both the winged ones and the Guard in general. The Auxiliary/X-Patriots have the option of standing a guard on the planet, in fact, Starbolt has volunteered to take a vacation there for a month or two, and everyone trusts Starbolt (just not the drink named after him). The transport is loaded. Everyone is evacuated, and heading to La-Guna.

When.

The Juber…IN SPACE!!!

During transit, with the Juber accompanying the transport ship, a warning claxon sounds Red Alert. Going to the bridge, everyone sees on the monitor a rear view of what's going on behind the Juber…the transport ship, and behind it, a giant pink space whale…

DUN DUN DUN….

Continued tomorrow!

Manta turns towards the X-Patriots. She says, "Policy dictates that we not face the Acanti and save who and what we can by proceeding, as we are clearly overmatched."

She seems to be waiting for some form of response from the team.

"There's no sanctioned way to use transporters offensively…and we wouldn't know where to start…"

Manta trails off for just a moment, then glides upwards towards the center of the bridge (Shi'ar bridges are tiered).

"Juber, full about! Lay down suppressive fire! Distract the Acanti, but try to remain at longest possible range!"

The vessel quickly turns about, and begins firing. It seems to do as little good as it did before…and the Acanti isn't even bothered by it, casually creeping up to the transport vessels and gobbling them up.

She turns to the crew.

"Send homing beacon and distress beacon, priority one!"

Then she answers Nicolette, "Locking on to Brood has always been difficult. Largely because of their existence as two joined beings, so to speak. The transporters have difficulty handling them."

Manta asks the ship to run a trace on Michael, and he's listed as not aboard the vessel. She goes to ask for a log of when he left, when the power completely shuts down and everyone feels the familiar sensation of being forcibly docked.

Meanwhile, Mikey and the Brain. Due to the brain still containing some of the Acanti's natural purity, Brood don't like to hang out here. So there's just this giant glop of cerebellum…it's pink and orange, and glows softly.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

As people approach the airlock…it doesn't seem under any distress at all. In fact, other than being docked, it doesn't seem like the Brood are even bothering with the Juber.

Meanwhile, in the brain…

The brain communicates to Mike in brief telepathic messages, very disjointed. It describes, in brief scenes, the Slaver Virus that forces it to help the Brood. How it just wants to be a happy pink space whale floating around doing space whale things, and is really bummed out that it can't seem to really control its body due to the Slaver Virus.

Manta considers for a moment.

"I believe that I can assist in this matter, child."

She flies up, to an odd angle, reconnoiters a little, flies a little to the side, then lets off a pulse of light through the opened airlock. The scream of a Brood is soon heard.

Then…from above, she gets absolutely swarmed. Everyone freezes up for a second, because it's so incredibly intense. About twenty Brood came out of nowhere and jumped her, dragging her down. You hear her body impact with the top of the Juber, and her mask flies loose, landing at Nico's feet.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 3, 2007, 1:49pm

Momontarily, Nicolette scrambled back in open terror. She almost fell over, and her eyes remained affixed on the mask as she took a breath and tried to gather herself.
"Defend her!" she barked, and tried to get herself to move again. She zipped over to the top of the ship, intent on ripping Manta away from the Brood. Whether she hated and feared her didn't matter - she didn't want to lose anyone else.

"Golem, cover her!" Golem runs Manta's way as he reforms, covering her body as best he can.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 1:53pm

As people move to get Manta free, more Brood start coming out of the woodwork. Golem is making progress, but it's like every Brood he swats down gets instantly replaced. Nico manages to get to Manta, but everyone else loses sight of her. She sees Manta is injured, but is fighting Brood off as much as she can, with blasts of light energy. She also notices that Manta's face…doesn't exist. She has, essentially, a gelatinous form held in shape by her outfit and a mostly transparent skeletal structure. It's starting to ooze out slightly from the place where the mask was.

You know, it's a lot like everything is moving in slow motion, but so am I as I watch the Brood swarm Manta - so I can't do anything about it. I wake up when I hear the thud of her landing on top of the Juber. God forsaken bugs.

I do the half body tornado thing to get to the top of the Juber as fast as possible. From there, I solidify entirely. Then? It's smashing with my right, and firing with my left.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 3, 2007, 1:56pm

Oh, God… I have to touch her!

Nicolette tried to break through to Manta, grab her and fly her back to the others - and the mask. Looking at her without it was even worse than with it.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 1:57pm

Nadia and Nico are taking it to the Brood, but can barely even see each other. All the stops are obviously being pulled out. Manta's doing what she can, but is obviously not well.

Meanwhile, in the brain, the brain does the mental equivalent of a shrug. "If you manage to make the connections work psychicly for a little bit, everyone can go free. It's what the nice white lady wanted to do."

Curt goes to his room.

«DUN DUN DUN.»

And is right back, as advertised.

Nico grabs a hold of Manta, but it's hard to hold her and keep fighting. In fact, Manta's trying to stand on her own, and move on her own, despite it being quite clearly painful for her.

And the brain really thinks you can do it, Mike. You can do it. You get images of a little train trying to make it up a mountain.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

Post by K'lar on May 3, 2007, 2:07pm

Mike tries to do what the brain suggests, but keeps finding himself coming up short. The last time, he pitches forward and hears a nasty crunching sound as he lasts on the ground.

"Ouch…" He opens the front of his uniform to find his camera is smashed up pretty badly, and left a pretty nasty bruises on his chest, "Dammit!" he mutters, as he pulls himself back to his feet, trying to catch his breath.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 2:08pm

Between Nadia and Golem, Nico has enough time/space to get Manta down among the group. But this is starting to feel like a losing battle. The Brood seem easily swatted away, or stunned, but you're noting not many of them have actually died. And everyone else gets a gander of Manta's…"face", too, if they care.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 3, 2007, 2:08pm

Not exactly willing to leave them to fight alone, Rapt's found and raided an arms locker, and is shooting from the best vantage he could find, trying to clear out around Nico/Manta.

((And…class time in a few))

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Prime on May 3, 2007, 2:08pm

Nicolette had never tried it before… she had never even considered it. But now, it suddenly struck her that she should try.

She backed off a few feet and accelerated sharply. There was a sonic boom as she ripped through the sound barrier. Her knowledge of physics argued back, but she hoped it would create a small shockwave that would push back the Brood in one direction - if just for a second.

And if that didn't work, she could always try flying through them.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 2:09pm

If people are falling back around Curt, he is managing…barely…to slow the Brood down. It's like you're inside a globe of bullet time or something…when they get about 20 feet away, they slow to a crawl. But a large, nasty, and deadly crawl.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 3, 2007, 2:10pm

Well, that was convient. Slowed targets make easy targets. Rapt shifts to trying to pick off the slowed ones.

Through it all, I can't help but notice Manta - I've seen some weird things from my time with the Morlocks, but this is way above and beyond. The mask makes a lo of sense now…

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 2:13pm

Nicolette and Rapt are both actually managing to put some Brood down. But there's so many…and you have to be a serious optimist to think everything's going to work out.

From the transport, a small group of winged Shi'ar, led by Ol'Jin, emerge, holding Kree blasters and rifles.

"I don't suppose you want to confiscate these now, do you?" he says as they join in the battle.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again

Meanwhile, the brain thinks to Mike how incredibly disappointed it is in his lameness, and informs him that there is a pitched battle with his friends down in the hangar bay. It also suggests a relatively Brood-free way of getting there.

"We can't go on like this for long… Where's the rest of the crew?"

To the winged Shi'ar, she called out: "How many of you are left?"

All the while, she kept thrashing as many enemies as she could, and tried to think of a way out.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 2:18pm

Ol'Jin answers, "We've lost maybe…couple hundred, including Ol'Nar. After that shot from Manta, though, things started looking better. We wanted to make sure the ship was clean before we joined. And…I'm sorry for not trusting you before, over that thrice cursed 'Viceroy'."

He keeps firing.

Most of the crew of the Juber isn't trained for this sort of combat, so they haven't come out.

I doubt the brood will pay too much attention to me..even saying something like that. I'm want to try to rapidly give back all the KE i've been absorbing..if it works like I think…I should create a large area of superheated air..maybe even a fireball.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 2:21pm

For one brief moment, the Brood seem to be released from stasis…check that…moving in even quicker. And then…they seem to simultaneously all burst into flame. The power of it knocks everyone but Nico, Nadia, and Golem to the ground (and Rapt, since he's in cover), but it's one hell of a visual. Curt's pretty wiped out, but there's now a very clear area around the Juber's hatch, and the transport's hatch, and the Acanti seems about ready to sneeze like it did the last time…and here comes Mike running into the hangar bay.

Re: X-Patriots #8: Flyin' High Again
Post by The Sacred Digits on May 3, 2007, 2:43pm

The asteroid from Roxanne and the irritation of the fireball manage to work together to open up the Acanti's mouth…external and internal stimulus. All ships sail off in a strong sneeze, and the Acanti seems to be gyrating in pain behind the vessels. The Star Gate is close enough, especially with the sneeze, and everyone is able to proceed through and close it behind.

Manta is taken to the medbay, where she insists she's fine. On the way there, and while there, she makes every effort to hide her face and other parts of her body which became exposed through standard costume destruction. She seems really high strung about that.

On the other side of the Star Gate, losses are tallied up. The winged Shi'ar did take heavy losses, but still are strong, happy for the help the X-Patriots gave. Ol'Jin has actually even officially apologized. The Juber had no losses. Two times against the Brood, and twice the Juber has succeeded. That's remarkable in the Shi'ar military.

Mike is down in the lounge celebrating with the crew. He's making up silly songs about the great victory against the Brood,

The crew sings, "THE JUBER LIVES ON!!!"

Sitting in the lounge with the crew I look Manta's mask over, having grabbed it in the mad dash back onto the Juber. I should get it back to her soon. Time being? Sipping that glowing rainbow drink again and completely bluffing my way through Mike's made up song with the crew.

This could have gone far worse. Singing and drinking time now.

"Hey guys!"

Mike looks at Nic, "Sorry, boss lady. I just needed to do something. Besides, I ended up safer than everyone else. And I got some information that should help the entire fleet. Brood really hate hanging around the Arcudi brains. If you have a strong enough telepath, they can stand there pretty safely and just fix the "Slaver virus"."

Mike takes the shiny object he found in the brain of the Arcudi out of his pocket. It's a beautiful ring, which Shi'ar engraved letters and a glowing blueish gem. It would probably make a great engagement ring, "I found this in the Brood ship…if this isn't a sign, I don't know what is."

Mike leans forward (and up) and kisses Nic softly on the lips, "Don't worry. If you guys need me, just send a call and a transport and I'll always be ready for a fight."
