The Juber…IN SPACE!!!

The team is summoned to a conference room by Manta for mission briefing.

She waits for enough people to enter to start the plot.

How convenient. Nicolette and Mike had made it back just in time for their next mission. Greetings would have to wait a little while.

Prime entered the room and sat down, nodding to Manta while trying not to look at her.

Mike walks into the briefing room, smiling at his teammates. He sits down and waits for Manta to start talking.

Nicolette waved at Roxanne with a wide smile.
"There were some problems in Australia, but it doesn't matter. Everybody is alive and well. We had a great time, too."

She glanced at Michael for a moment, and then firmly looked away.

Mike is definitely avoiding Nic's gaze. He is a bundle of mixed emotions right now.

I wander into the conference and shoot Manta a smile and a wave… which she may or may not be aware of. What, with the mask, it doesn't look like she can see but she seemed perfectly aware of her surroundings back when she put me through the battery of basic training tests. So… I'll assume she saw. Somehow.

Then I turn to Nico and Mike.

"Hey guys! Earth! How was it? All the continents in the same place?"

Lame, Nadia. Lame.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional

Nicolette smiled at Nadia as well.
"Like I just told Roxanne, we had a bit of trouble, but it was a fully satisfying journey as a whole. For me, at least. I don't know what Michael hoped from it…"

She said it like a joke…

Mike sighes, "It was nice to see my parents. And Generation X and the Hellions were great. I even got to run a trouble making mission with some of my friends from the mansion, which is always a good thing. But, I missed this place way too much…"

Mike glances at Nic again. They hadn't talked on the shuttle, but Nic had been really cold to him since they met back up.

"That's good to hear!"

Things look mildly… awkward, between Nico and Mike. Like, post sexual tension awkward, though I dismiss that because Nico just came back from visiting Wildfire… Still though. Awkward. I wonder what's up?

"Well it's good to have you guys back on the Juber," I briefly wonder what mission is about to be laid on us, "where the fun never stops…"

Mike blushes slightly, "Uhm…maybe I said too much." Mike shrugs, "Eh…when has that ever stopped me. At my locker, I heard that a particular feathered farmboy's relationship with his cactus was not doing so well. Apparantly, the cactus ended up doing the beast with two backs with the newest card in the deck. I also hear that the cactus's stalk didn't hold up too well, but that just might be cafeteria BS."

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 11:25am

"If you children are finished," says Manta, with a trace of humor, "there is work to be done."

A hologram of a planet comes into view.

"This is Meslon 3, former Kree Territory. It has been uninhabited for millenia, possibly eons, ever since a major climate shift made life uneasy for the indigineous races. Little was known about it, so that Shi'ar sent a science team to investigate, headed by Captain Jal'har, a renowned scientist approaching retirement. We have not heard from them in two days, standard duration for the Guard to check up."

Manta pauses for a moment.

"What makes this even more concerning is twofold. First, being in Kree Territory…well, I think you know better than I the current dangers of that, not Kree related. I will therefore recuse myself from the field, as I would not wish for you to have a second…trial, in case anything goes wrong. Secondly…here is the last transmission we received from the planet."

She presses a button, and a hologram of a young Shi'ar, about twenty, appears. "This is Captain Jal'har reporting in. Our team has made an amazing discovery: a fountain of eternal youth, so to speak. You see the effects it has had on me. We plan to stay here three more days to get further details and samples, then will return to the rendevous. We will check back tomorrow for further instruction."

The transmission ends, and Manta turns to face the group, silently.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional

Manta presses another button, and an image of an older Shi'ar appears.

"This is how Jal'har looked before taking the expedition. Also, to answer your other question, there has been no reason to suspect they are not still on the planet. As for Prime's ideas, they do seem to have merit. Speaking of which, Prime, when you return, I would like you to take the officer's exam, now that your Shi'ar studies seem to have progressed properly. Rapt, have you taken your Lieutenant's exam yet?"

She looks as pointedly at Rapt as she can from behind the mask.

Manta acts like she didn't hear Rapt and Mike at all. It's unclear if she did or didn't.

«Mystical fast-forward…IN SPACE!!!»

The team is beamed down to the planet, which like all planets, seems to mysteriously have a roughly Earth-normal atmosphere because our pencilers hate drawing space suits. The terrain of the planet is rocky and desolate, with normal gravity (maybe a touch lighter than normal). The area they are in contains a shuttle, and a mini-camp, with various computers and transmitting equipment set up. Everything seems pretty normal, almost as if they walked off for a second and would be back at any time.

Also nearby is a vaguely ominous and large cave.

"And you can send a construct to check out that cave."

Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 25, 2007, 11:53am

"Sheesh, you guys are just putting me to work today…"

I have Golem pop up, and he goes to the cave, taking a quick peek inside. Still sensing around, too.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by Prime on Apr 25, 2007, 11:54am

Nicolette approached the computers. She totally expected to be the best Shi'ar-speaker among the group, so she had to do what she could.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 11:55am

No one seems to be around, on the surface nearby.

Mike randomly hits a button on a computer that causes a log entry to visualize…the older Jal'har, who talks about strange readings from the cave, possibly remnants of the past inhabitants of the planet. He outlines a brief and boring plan on how to explore it.

Golem goes into the cave, and reports that it seems to have some kind of barrier in it that he can't pass. It seems to be a relatively well-defined tunnel, probably dug, not natural.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 11:56am

Nico's grasp of Shi'ar would be able to do more good…there are various scientific readings that she can call up, although she's not sure exactly what is what (since she knows the general words for science, but not the specifics). Also, she can call up log entries by date, but can't recognize names.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 25, 2007, 11:57am

"I don't sense anyone around, but Golem says that there's a barrier or something in there. Also, I know caves, and, well, that's not a natural cave. Somebody made it, I think."

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by Prime on Apr 25, 2007, 11:57am

First, Nicolette tried the sensible thing: calling up the latest log entry.

"Well, unless Rapt goes up and finds something interesting, the cave seems like our best bet. We're going in soon. I'll be taking point…"

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 12:04pm

The other log entries are mostly scientific reports, and very dry. There is one of a slightly youthful Jal'har (somewhere between original age and later age) talking about the fabulous discovery, saying he's unsure of how exactly to take samples, but will continue to investigate.

The cave is very dark, you're just able to see about five feet in front of you. People come to Golem, who is standing before a large shimmering wall. It seems translucent, and not very thick.

There are no obvious controls, and the wall seems to extend down into the ground and to the sides around the passage.

It strikes everyone that somewhere along the line, Nico did her hair in pigtails. And Golem looks a lot bigger than he used to.

Then the wall disappears. As does Golem.

Welcome to being five year olds. Hang on a second for PM's. In general, your powers work about 1/10th the level they usually do, and you still know who you are and why you're here, but you also have a desire to stay, and another quirk that I'll PM you.

There is a large room, with glass window walls. There is no obvious door into it, but everyone can see in. There are five Shi'ar, about five years old, playing with blocks, riding bikes…there is some seriously nice play equipement in there. The tunnel bends to the left around the room, but there's still no obvious entrance.

When Roxanne taps on the glass, gently, a door that no one saw in the tunnel slowly slides open, and a strange robot that seems really thin and frail wheels out.

"Hello. Have you come to play?" it says, in a voice that's neither masculine nor feminine.

I approach the robot fairly quickly and walk rapid, short circles around it.

"Cool. What do you do?"

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 12:55pm

The robot looks meticulously child-proofed.

"Why, hello little girls! Have you come to play?"

It begins a pattycake routine. It sprouts a second set of arms so it can play with both Nadia and Roxanne.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional

Mike is doing what Nic said. He is walking around the tunnel to the left, banging on the glass every few feet (and eventually the rock wall, I assume) looking for an entrace. He keeps yelling, "Nope! Not yet! Still working on it! How about this one?" And other random sounding gibberish.

Mike pulls a feather from one of Rapt's wings and runs back down the tunnel towards the ice cream machine, "YOU CAN'T CATCH ME!"

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 2:45pm

The Shi'ar kid cries harder.

Back in the hall:

"Spaceship is a game that we don't play here. Many of the other kids came here playing spaceship…"

Suddenly, more rooms are visible to the people in the hall, lining the hall. There's little kid Skrulls, and Kree, and races you can't even begin to identify.

"We found the game of spaceship counterproductive to the values we teach."

"OW!" Rapt looks the way Mike ran, tearing up slightly.

"I don't wanna be here anymore!"

"Everyone eventually wants to be here," says the robot.

I plop down next to one of the kids not being a whiny crybaby and start playing with his Spongebob doll.

"This place is awesome. How long have you been here?"

Rapt runs after Mike, fully intent on making him regret taking the feather.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional

«Um. Sure. Give me a minute.»

The Auxiliary goes in search of a missing science team, who may have found the fountain of youth. Once on the planet, they encounter, essentially, a high tech sealed playroom with five Shi'ar kids in it and awesome toys. They realize they've regressed to five year olds, and have flaws associated with that. A robot comes out to play with the Auxiliary and offers them a chance to go into the playroom if they stop playing banned games like army, spaceship, and superhero. Nadia and Roxanne went in, and promptly forgot everyone else existed.

Rapt is trying to convince the robot to let them go home, and it reveals that they have a huge amount of kids here. Kree kids, Skrull kids, et cetera. And none of them leave.

Also, beware timeouts.

((Recap: We went down to a planet
We found a cave.
We were turned into 5 year olds.
We each got a particular quirk. A robot babysitter is watching us
We're allowed to play with the other Shi'ar kids and the toys if we stop playing "army".
Roxie and Nadia went in to play.))

Rapt and Mike go running down the hall. The wall is back, and seems to prevent escape.

Meanwhile, in the room, the kid shrugs at Nadia. "Maybe, I don't know, a few days. Do you like Spongebob? We have all the other toys too. I can be Patrick."

He opens up a toy chest that seems to be empty, and pulls out a Patrick doll.

"It's really cool. You can get any toy you want."

Having finally cornered Mike, Rapt stands triumphant. And wonders how to make him pay.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by K'lar on Apr 25, 2007, 3:00pm

Mike whispers to Rapt, "Sorry, I had to get away from that creepy robot. I hate robots. You ever see Terminator? Uhm…of course, if I'm only five, why did I see that movie? My parents must be nuts…" Mike shakes his head, "But none of that is important..I don't think. This is a bad situation, and I want to go back to the ship. NOW!"

"Really?" I yank Patrick from him and then sit squarely between him and the toy chest. "Because I want this one."

I proceed to have Spongebob and Patrick play with each other.

"This place is awesome."

Mike scowls at Rapt, "I am not going to give him much of a choice!"

Mike storms to the robot, "I need to go to the bathroom!"

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional

In the room…

"Okay."

The kid looks around.

"What other toys do you want? I can get them for you."

In the hall…

"Bathroom? When you get into the playground, that will be taken care of. If you don't stop playing banned games, though, it could get uncomfortable. We apologize."

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional

Mike starts to whine, "I'm not going in there…but I need to go to the bathroom NOW!"

"I'm afraid you'll have to hold it."

The robot looks as uncomfortable as a robot can look.

Mike scowls, "I WILL NOT HOLD IT!" Mike proceeds to pee on the robot's leg. He sighes contented, "You smell like pee now!" Mike starts to giggle madly. Then he scowls again, "Need to use bathroom!!!"

The kid obediently starts sifting through toy chests and bringing Nadia things. She has a three foot high Galactus, all of the Imperial Guard, including rare variants, all of Spongebob's friends, Barbie's dream house, including a Barbie house based on the Imperial Palace of Chandilar, and just basically…oodles of stuff.

The robot looks at Mike with disgust.

"That's a…timeout?"

It seems confused.

"It is probably a timeout. Is bathroom a banned game?"

It's obviously processing a bunch of things.

Mike is looking at the robot and pouting. He turns to walk away, and trips on the robot's foot and crashes face first into the robot's metal surface and screams, "OW!! YOU HURT ME!! YOU ARE TOO ROUGH!! HURTING PEOPLE IS A BANNED GAME, TOO! RIGHT??" Mike's nose is trickling some blood.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by Nadia "Osmosis Lass" Johansson on Apr 25, 2007, 3:15pm

"You did good… real good."

Bright eyed, I start playing around with some of the toys, but never anything for more than a couple seconds. I know I said that I would choose, but they're all so awesome. And mine. That too.

"Thanks!"

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 3:17pm

The robot starts spitting out bandages and gauze.

"Hurting people is not a game. Add hurting people to banned games. Too many banned games. Must remove and reboot. Critical error."

People in the room are beginning to remember who they are. As is everyone else. They're still five year olds, but the flaws are fading.

"… what the hell?"

Everyone in the rooms starts looking very confused.

The robot reboots.

"Greetings. What game would you like to play?" it says.

Re: X-Patriots #7: Growing Up Is Optional
Post by The Sacred Digits on Apr 25, 2007, 3:24pm

The robot pauses.

"It's time to go home now."

Everyone starts to re-age to their normal age…which is slightly creepy to the people in the hall, as some of those Skrull and Kree and other stuff had been here a long time. They literally age to ash.

Then, everyone's back aboard the Juber, safe and sound.
