Kre’nor leans over and says to Mike, "Wouldn't you be more comfortable sitting with your friends?"

Mike glances at Nic quickly and says, "Yeah, but I want to see about that opening in the graveyard shift, so I need to get this down pat. Show me how to set the nav points again."

Kre’nor looks at Mike with confusion, but he runs Mike through something he had literally just shown him five minutes ago. Mike throws all his attention at the screen, though every now and then, he does toss some glances in Nic's direction.

She didn't look very angry. After all, she wasn't feeling very angry… But what was she feeling?

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard

Gladiator steps onto the bridge. The crew gets to their feet immediately. A slight, almost invisible smile comes to Gladiator's face. He stands in front of the bridge crew, and the X-Pats, but his voice and image is being projected all over the ship, and across the fleet.

"Good morning, everyone. First, I would like to address the crew of the Juber. Your valor on the Phalanx homeworld was commendable. You have all faced many challenges in the last few months, and you have all proven yourselves to be heroes of the empire. The Juber has honored the memory of its namesake time and time again. Many of you will be promoted over the next few days."

"As for the Imperial Guard Auxilary, the Empress and Imperial Council have been in discussions about you even before you were brought onboard the Juber. It is no secret that many Shi'ar felt it was a dishonor to have Terrans serving aboard this fine vessel." Gladiator lets that hang over them for a few seconds before continuing.

"However, you continue to serve with distinction and dedication, even in the face of difficult challenges." He doesn't need to mention the Brood, the Phalanx, and Deathbird. "Because of your dedicated service to this ship and the Empire, it has been decided that you should not be thought of as outsiders anymore. Empress Lillandra has named you all honorary Shi'ar citizens. It should be noted that in the long and proud history of the Empire, this has almost never happened, especially for Terrans."

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Prime on May 14, 2007, 11:23am

Nicolette hovered over to Gladiator and gave a reverent bow, smiling brilliantly at the same time.
"In the name of my teammates, I'd like to thank you. We accept this honor with pride. And we really are glad we've managed to show our race in a better light in the Imperium."

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Rogue on May 14, 2007, 11:31am

Gladiator nods his head slightly at Nicolette, accepting her thanks silently. Her approach was a slight breach of protocol, but that was something that could be addressed at another time. Today was about celebrating the empire, "But, of course. Our work is never done."

"Today, we will be returning to the Phalanx homeworld. There are still a few scattered hives on the planet, and the Juber's science team has been petitioning since the battle ended to get their hands on some of the disabled technology. You will be transported down with the science team to provide them with security, and provide any help they need in identidying and recovering Phalanx technology."

"I do ask that you use good judgement and help keep them in line. Scientists have an unfortunate habit of not paying attention to their own safety." Several of the crew chuckle at that. Many, many missions have started off with the words, "We've lost a science team…"

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 14, 2007, 11:35am

"We'll do our best." I try to share Nicolette's enthusiasm with this, keep my smile up, but I realize the citizenship doesn't extend to me - or shouldn't, at any rate. Nicolette and her team have done quite a bit in their short time, and they deserve the honor for themselves. No reason to spoil it.

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Prime on May 14, 2007, 11:35am

Nicolette had already blitzed back to her seat.
"Is the planet completely locked down? What are the odds that we face others trying to study the planet and left-over technology? Scientists, or even just marauders. How are we to handle them, provided their intentions aren't hostile?"

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Rogue on May 14, 2007, 11:41am

Gladiator nods, "Yes, the planet has been locked down by the Nova Corps. They have allowed us to study the material and take some samples, but it is their juristriction."

Gladiator does not look pleased by that, but continues, "Yes, we are also worried about external threats. There are many other races and individuals who would take advantage of this situation. Even some among the Shi'ar," he says pregnantly.

Skrulls. Of course.

«Wildfire is there?»

Curiously enough, they really could have used Roxanne right now. She could have used her powers to retrieve the gem relatively easily. But right now… Nicolette had to think of the safety of her teammates in first order. She decided to go for distraction until they could figure something out.

"Thanos, right?"

~Wildfire~

After managing to slip away from the fuss above, I come down to join the others - and immediately wish I'd come sooner.

"Thanos…" I walk over to Nicolette's side, whispering. "What happened?"

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard

"Everything worked out, but we were surprised…"

First of all, Nicolette tried to suppress any nervousness she was feeling. She looked at Thanos questioningly, and glanced at the gem with some suspicion. It would be a minor advantage if he didn't know the details of what they were doing.
"If you don't know who we are, what do you want with us?"

"What, this gem? Well, I'm afraid you're not going to get it. We were paid enough to make damn well sure we complete our task of procuring it, no matter what it is."

There was no need to involve the Shi'ar in this. This was completely off the books, after all, and it was better if Thanos didn't get the wrong idea and hold them for their enemies.

"Mercenaries…I should have known." Thanos says with a look of disgust, "I am afraid that whatever they paid you, it wasn't enough. She tried to concentrate on the mind gem. It was hard, throughout the panic of what was happening to her hand. Of course, she had no idea how to use it - or any psychic abilities at all, for the matter - but she had to attempt something. Specifically, that was attacking Thanos' mind. If it wouldn't work, and it looked like she was going to lose the gem, she'd slip it to one of her teammates if possible…

For about a split second, Nicolette decided she'd try to hold out and do something. She'd just suppress it all and give Thanos what he deserved - a thorough lobotomy. She should have had a strong enough will to resist the effects, right? Right?

Her resolve broke rather quickly. It was just too much. With a quiet scream, she dropped the gem. All she managed to do was discard it on the ground away from Thanos. Cradling her head with one arm and staring at the other, she had no idea what she had been hoping for. If she couldn't manage, none of the others would either…

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard

Rapt thought as he flew. The mission was to obtain the gem, and get it out. Thanos likely would follow him, he assumed, since he had the gem. But what if he didn't. He couldn't just leave the others to him. He had real enough power now. He would be able to get delay Thanos long enough for the others to get out, then escape himself, he told himself. And then he got kicked in the stomach. It hurt. A lot.

Rapt glared at the green woman as he tried catching his breath, yanking her leg out from under her (or trying) as soon as she brought her other foot up for another kick. She'd pay for hurting him. As soon as he could breath again, he planned to quite vividly use the gem to smash her.

I speed off hoping to hit her a few dozen times before she even realizes I'm there.

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Prime on May 15, 2007, 12:41pm

«What's her environment?»

"Who do you think you ARE?!"

She glared up at the figure and ignored the blunt pain in her arm. It was nothing compared to the other one, which she could only hope wouldn't… break up.

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 15, 2007, 12:42pm

The green woman doesn't seem to be far above human level, just skilled…more of my department.

I head over to her and materialize a metal staff, trying to face her. "Curt, help the others out, your talents are needed elsewhere. I have her."

Re: X-Patriots #9 - Changing of the Guard
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on May 15, 2007, 12:42pm

Rapt glared at her. He could feel the break in his hand now. But it didn't matter. He could fix it. He could set the bones. But first, Gamora was going to pay. He had power now. He wasn't going to be hurt. Not by her, not Thanos, not now.

Most telekinetic throws he'd heard of, had the TK grab onto a limb, or the entire outside of the body, and throw them from there. So Rapt tried something different, and tried to use Gamora's spine as the 'grip' point to throw her to the side.

I'm completely caught off guard that she managed to block each and every blow. Is she a speedster too?

Then I realize that no one…not even Thanos as really gone all out. Thanos for sure could have killed us with a though…and this chick is obviously no slouch………

EVERYONE STOP!!!!!!!!

I turn to Thanos….so what exactly do you want with the gem?

The gem on her forehead - chances are it's one of the gems. And she's turned it off, looking for something of a challenge. Pride…it is a weakness. "Yes, it just might be."

I strike high, aiming for the gem in the hope of knocking it lose.

Nicolette decided she simply didn't have time for this. Her opposition was obviously pretty strong… which they meant they were a waste of the time she should have spent rescuing Rapt and her honor. And she had to get back at Thanos…

She conjured up some crocodile tears and touched down on the ground, looking at the other two fearfully.
"I'm so sorry!" she cried, "I'm so new at this and then this big guy appeared and I don't know what to do! Please don't hurt me…"

«Er, wasn't Nicolette teleported away from the others?»

Nicolette took a deep breath. She couldn't let any of… THIS get to her. She had been irrational. Attacking immediately had apparently been a mistake. She had to stand above it all. Fix everything…

She sniffed quietly.
"I'm sorry for hitting you, I was just so confused. A big purple man and a green woman are attacking my friends. Will you help me save them?"

The kick hits hard and fast - even without the power, she's strong, and I lose my breath. She seems to be reliant on kicks, however, so I decide to try and take advantage of that - I swing the staff low, aiming for her knees.

Thanos looks at Curt, "When the gems were divided among the Infinity Watch…that is what Adam calls us. He's dramatic to say the least. When the gems were divided, Adam had complete say over who took them. Eternity, the Living Tribunal, Order and Chaos, Love and Hate, In-betweener, The Stranger…others I am sure…where are all in attendence, but they were afraid of Adam's power with the Gauntlet."

Thanos says with pride, "I managed to defeat them all in three seconds flat when I had the Gauntlet. Because of this fear, Adam was the one who decided who got each gem. You and your foolish friends are just pawns here in their cosmic games."
