X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 10:19am

Previously on the X-Patriots…

The X-Patriots' fighter drills were disrupted by an emergency signal from the nearby Ara-Tum nebula. An investigation revealed a monsteriously big spider web, and Shadowstar - a Shi'ar war hero - caught inside it. The team was quickly ambushed by the spider brood and it's progenitor, but managed to free Shadowstar, who remained in stasis. Meanwhile, Kalvin and Thomas screwing around resulted in the release of a devouring monster that destroyed the spider web and became a black hole. Having escaped outside the nebula, the team discovered their ship the Juber to have disappeared…

The X-Patriots are stranded. The Ara-Tum nebula lies behind them, shrinking so slowly that human perception can't notice it. Before them lies the vast infinity of space… and no Juber in sight.

Maxwell's Demon's fighter seems to be fine on the outside… but the computer regularly notifies him that the life support is failing. At present time, he seems to have slightly less than six hours worth of air and energy left. Ghost's ship is much worse off - the cockpit is broken and the engine systems failing. Another person in her situation would be dead. Madrock's fighter is slightly banged up as well, but is more or less fully operational. The ships of the rest have only taken minimal damage.

Osmosis Lass is tugging around Shadowstar - a big spider-like starfighter. Apex and Tank are sharing a ship due to the destruction of the latter's. He's still deaf, and has a noticeable headache.

«Check in and interact… I'd rather not start without at least four people.»

"It doesn't seem to be near enough to be picked up directly," says Starbolt, "but we can pick up the plasmic-ionic trail of its sub-light engines. Adjust your sensors accordingly."

To Roxanne, he communicates:
"We can't hope that this will happen. The Juber wasn't supposed to move. We have to assume the worst… but, yes, perhaps there is another Shi'ar ship nearby. Send an emergency signal."

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 10:48am

The sensors pick up a trail… The ship seems to have flown away on an extremely wonky, unsteady course. It seems to have headed away from traditional routes - "downwards" at a 90 degree angle. Additionally, the scan picks up the trail of a smaller ship. Curiously, its trail ceases near the previous location of the Juber…

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by Last Hero on Sept 12, 2007, 10:51am

"They must have been boarded. The attackers must be trying to throw off pursuit with that course"

We weren't gone all that long. Only way they could have taken the ship that quickly would have been to kill everyone on board. Probably not a good idea to let the others realize that. Also explains the broken trail…no trained crew left. But, we will recover the ship anyway. They can't blame us for this, we were not there.

Curt is pretty sure the speaker is directly behind him - since he's lying flat on his back on the floor, that means he's standing just out of his line of sight beyond his head.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 10:58am

«Starbolt suggested sending an emergency signal as well, you know…»

Roxanne finds space to be clear. There's nothing around, and the fighter's sensors allow him to track the plasmic-ionic trail easily. Suddenly, the computer warns her that she's on a collision course - although she can see nothing before herself.

Surprisingly, Nicolette receives an answer.
"This is the Majestic Shi'ar Imperial Battle Cruiser Named in Honor of the Pride of the Throneworld Chandilar. Do you read me?"

Roxanne is starting to get red flashing lights. A counter on her HUD is counting down from 100 - it seems to measure distance to something.

Risk is in the ventilation shaft near the Danger Room, in full gear. He doesn't know exactly what's happened. All he knows is that something invaded the ship a short while ago, and that something managed to get rid of the crew very fast somehow. He was training when he realized what's going on.

The visibility in the vent is rather bad. There seems to be some kind of purple haze in it…

Roxanne safely manages to come to a halt. And the shots connect to something… After a few seconds of flickering, a small starship appears before her. The shots caused some damage, but she can make out the words 'Targaryen III Ship Rental' on its hull.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by Sir Nathaniel/Fang on Sept 12, 2007, 11:14am

Fang messes around with the system, and brings up a funky sensor array program to run along side the current one. The Imperial March is coming somewhere in the communication,"G'lk…Star Wars Radio Show? What the hell is Star Wars?"

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by Risk on Sept 12, 2007, 11:18am

I try to count off the number of things I know about this situation- don't even make it off of one hand. Saying that's bad would be an understatement. As soon as I see the haze, I make the natural assumption, and engage my gas mask from my mask. I don't need to find out what that stuff is.

The ventilation shaft… something tells me that Fang would be at home here. Being slightly more normal myself, I haven't seen the insides of one before; all I know about its layout is from the Juber's schematics. Whatever it is we're facing here is fast… did the alarms even go off? I can't even remember….

A red glare flashes over my eyes and I reach to my side- good. I've still got all of my equipment. I was… experimenting with something after everything that happened with K'un-L'un and around it; an exploration of sorts. Which leaves me thinking that this was pretty damn convenient that it involved the Cain 'persona' rather than Risk, or myself. I'm not complaining about that kind of convenience, though.

As soon as I've got my bearings, I start crawling along the shaft as silently as I can, looking for a grate to get some kind of idea of what's going on in the Juber without actually getting into the thick of it yet.

[Which I'm not just pulling out of my ass, he has it in his Cain gear, and Born requested that he have the gasmask, which is why he's in his Cain gear, not his Risk one :).]

Post by Last Hero on Sept 12, 2007, 11:20am

Nic responds, "That is the same signal we were investigating. We recovered a long missing Shi'ar vessel." Nic realized that it might be better not to mention Shadowstar by name, not until she was certain he would survive, "We will keep you updated."

She closes the channel and responds to Roxie, "Do not do anything until I get there." She turns her ship and accelarates towards them.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 11:23am

«I didn't even know he had more than one gear…»

Damien crawls inside the vent for a few minutes, before he starts to hear a curious chittering sound from underneath him. It takes him a few seconds to realize it's speech. His translator adapts moments later, but it seems to be doing an awful job translating. Still, he catches a few snippets.

"…trouble flying…. unknown… pilot…"

"…matter… escape… fight… Shi'ar…"

"…furious…"

He reaches a grate just in time to see something pass by beneath him through the slits in it, but too fast for him to recognize what it was.

Post by James "Maxwell's Demon" Clerk on Sept 12, 2007, 11:24am

«I'm here as well»

James was not pleased. If the disappearance of the Juber weren't bad enough, now he had discovered that his ship was damaged, and that his life support was failing, albeit slowly.

James tried to assess the damage to his ship, and asked the computer to run a diagnostic.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 11:24am

Nicolette reaches Roxanne and the rental ship.
—-
James' diagnostic gives him a bunch of technobabble. Essentially, it seems, one of the spiders from earlier managed to dig through the armor far enough until it ruptured some vital systems. Everything except life support seems to work normally though.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by Risk on Sept 12, 2007, 11:28am

Damn it.

So what is this, a hijacking? A part of me wants to just drop down there, take them out as best as I can. That's the more reckless side; I'm been a little less inhibited in that manner recently. It's the Risk persona. I unhook a tear gas grenade, keeping it in my hand in case it becomes wise to use.

Besides that I keep on listening; stay in place, hope I see or hear something useful.

[I know, you thought he had a mask in this one :).]

James activated the communications system:

Hm.

I guess they're gone. I try sliding the grate out of the way and lowering myself slowly. If I see anyone down there then I'll drop the tear gas, but I'm hoping the room's empty. If the Juber has been hijacked, I'd much rather stay unnoticed for now.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by Risk on Sept 12, 2007, 11:40am

What I wouldn't give for an image inducer or the like.

I take a few tentative steps forwards; I can't be the only person here. But if the other rooms are guarded… then I'd be revealing my presence. The Lounge could be a good place to check first, but anyone there could be under guard. The point of main guard would make most sense as the captain's deck, so that might be the best place to get to, but if I do, what then? There'll be guards over the rest of the Juber, right? And I don't know where the pilot is.

This situation seems worse with every moment of thought.

I creep silently over to the Lounge and glance inside, sidling along the wall when I get near it.

Roxanne, Fang and James head after the Juber as fast as they dare. It's quite easy to follow, since the Juber seems to have flown slowly and not on a direct course.

I've studied these, yes, but I'm not quite so certain of them in application. I try to do both; pump the gas out and lower the shields.

Nic checks to see if she can still follow the Juber's trail.

James sees the shields begin to lower.

"The shields are going down. I'm going in!"

Perhaps slightly hotheadedly, James begins to blast at the Shuttle Bay doors.

The new arrival seems to have a much bigger effect on the Juber's shields than the other fights could hope to have. Still, he doesn't quite get to blow them completely down before they fade away. He ceases fire.

It's Shadowstar… not that Roxanne would know that.
"I am only doing my duty," he replies to her.

Maxwell's Demon blows open the shuttle bay doors and skids to a halt inside it - then crashes into Fang's fighter.

Nicolette (as well as the rest of the team, who are quiet today) follow the Juber's trail. It's still on a coarse back towards the cloud, which means it's coming up ahead of Nicolette.

"Still several hours away," the Chandilar's Pride replies.

—-

Shadowstar heads into the Juber as well. Once he lands, he starts morphing back into a humanoid form, but collapses before he's finished.

Throughout the ship, the crew is starting to wake up. And of course, everybody (the team included) can hear Fang's call for help…

Nicolette and the others reach the Juber fast enough. It's no longer trying to evade due to a lack of pilot, after all.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.

[Assuming that the gas was vented.]

"Listen carefully, if you can understand me. Where did that other Suka go?" I pace slowly over to the only Suka still conscious, removing my mask so it can see my eyes.

"The rest of the Auxillary." I flick my wrist and a blade juts out, coming through a slit in my uniform at the wrist.

"If any of them are hurt," Kara "I'm going to come straight back here." I try to slam it against the wall and press the blade against its thorax, my eyes narrowing slightly, a shadow falling over them. "And I'm going to pick you apart. Slowly. I'll keep you alive. I'll even keep you conscious. You'll beg for mercy- for death. You'll pray for it; but I'm not a merciful god." My tone stays low and gravelly the entire time. Quiet.

"Answer quickly."

The Suka answers… but Damien's translator doesn't catch most of it. And he can be sure she didn't understand him either.

«Sooo… Is Roxanne on the Juber yet?»

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by Risk on Sept 12, 2007, 1:19pm

I let a low growl escape my lips, and I'm fairly tempted to drive the blade straight into its thorax. Instead, I settle for trying to drive it into the largest section of one of its limbs, intending to leave it there, stuck to the wall.

I pull my mask back on before turning around to face Curt, disabling the gas mask while I'm at it.

"Follow."

I head out of the bridge, back to the turbolift, looking over the controls for any indentation, mark, any impression the Suka may have left on it when using it, even an equivalent of a fingerprint. Something to indicate where it went.

J'aqen gestures for the rest of the Suka around Fang to stop, and moves closer, her fangs bared.

[[This is the fate of all who oppose the natural order of things,]] he says in their native language, [[You were good at running away while you were a bounty hunter, but on the Imperial Guard, you became a minor celebrity. Another growl pushes past my lips as I try to drive it into the wall, reeling slightly from the pain.

Still, the memory of both of my arms shattering under the strain of a single blow makes this easier to endure. I try to break free; at the same time, I press down on my glove, enabling the gas mask again. I try to reach for a tear gas grenade while still struggling to get free.

Being caught between the wall and Damien has next to no effect on the Suka. Damien does reach his grenade though.

I set the grenade off, doubly thankful for the gas mask. At the least, maybe it'll give me some breathing space. Enough to reach a more effective weapon. At the most, maybe it'll incapacitate the Suka.

Post by Marisol Morales on Sept 12, 2007, 1:31pm

I head in alongside Nicolette, but I'm careful to stay behind her - after all, in space like this, my powers are kind of weak. Still, I sense out and try and see if there are any rocks nearby.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 1:32pm

Nicolette zips to Fang's location, and only has to break through one door to get there. She comes upon half a dozen Suka and a wall of webbing.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.
Post by BornIn1142 on Sept 12, 2007, 1:34pm

The tear gas is problematic for the Suka - it lets go of Damien, along with a small chunk of flesh from his shoulder. It writhes on the floor some more and tries to get a footing on its seven legs.

Roxanne can sense some ground in the hydroponics garden nearby, but also sees a weapon locker on her way.

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.

I bite down on the mask, hissing as the Suka pulls away. It's a good thing the material of the mask is stronger than my teeth.

I flick my right wrist, the only one with a blade still attached. It slots out of my uniform, and I try to drive it into the Suka's thorax. I don't care. Not this time. I pull it back, and with my other hand, I level the beretta at the Suka and fire.

[I've got to take off for prayers; sorry, Born! If it's still running I'll be back in about twenty.]

Re: X-Patriots #22 - Grand Theft Juber.

The Suka Nicolette threw gets stuck on the wall. But Fang's acid forms a hole inside it large enough for Nicolette to fly through. Fang can't break free, J'aqen is too strong.

J'aqen is squashed against the ceiling, but is far from down and out, despite the white-ish, blood-ish liquid spewing from her head. She screeches in pain, and pushes Nicolette away with relative ease, sending her flying towards the floor. She's stronger than she is durable… and she'll fall on Nicolette if she doesn't move.

J'aqen is big enough to STILL land on Nicolette, pinning her to the ground. It sinks its fangs into Nicolette's thigh. It's strong enough to break her skin. She can tell it's about to pump poison into her.

It wriggles a moment, squirming as I drive the blade deep into its thorax. I hold the projectile back; waste not want not. It thrashes in agony, slumping forward into my arms, and a guttural rattle escapes its lips. It grows still as the last of the rattle runs clear through the air.

I let it slide out of my arms, staring at it impassively. After a moment, my gaze flits off of it and back to the controls of the turbolift, with the same purpose as before.

"God damn it."

I slam my fist into the wall, and the impact rings back into my own arm. Stupid thing to do; they're still not fully healed, and I pull back an extremely pained arm. I head back over to the bridge; there must be logs there, some sort of indication of how the Suka got in. That might be where it'll be.
