X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by watcher on Jul 17, 2007, 8:23am

[[The team has had a little time to rest up after their battle with the Hala Guard, but definitely not enough. Smasher and Sandor have woken you all up, feeling tired and worn down. Rogue and whoever ever returned to off have already departed, transported by a Shi'ar transport vessel to Earth via star gate. The Juber is currently in relative station in front of a star gate, making final preparations for their jump.]]

[[Lila is still in the med bay, but the doctors are optomistic she'll make a full recovery.]]

[[Smasher's power suit and goggles are still with the engineers, and they haven't given him any definitely answers on if or when they will be repaired. He is wearing a X-Patriots uniform at the moment. His face is still slightly burned from just before he swapped his powers to heat resistance]]

Post by Meisha "Muse" Aisha on Jul 17, 2007, 8:32am

[I was fine when Smasher woke me up. I had no need for rest. The hour I got was plenty; the Tibetan meditation technique I learned many years ago allowed me to get eight hours of rest in the one hour I had. The dark shadows of my room were all the comfort I needed… and there is no place as welcoming as them. How could there be when we are one and the same? Their embrace my sustenance… driving me on in my eternal vigilance… my mission of justice and punishment.

I am vengeance. I am the night. I am- whoops, wrong guy.]

Being ‘woken up’ didn’t really disturb me… probably because I wasn’t sleeping in the first place. I wasn’t ready to.

Of course, that does mean that I’m exhausted. It might have not been the best of ideas. I tilt my head up to look at Smasher – I should have about a thousand questions right now, but I’m barely lucid enough to ask the two important ones.

"How’s Lila?"

I sigh and drop my head.

"Do we have a plan? One that isn’t a suicide drive? Not that I would mind too much at this stage… or probably before that even, but I’m just curious."

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by watcher on Jul 17, 2007, 8:35am

Smasher says, "Lila's in much better shape. She's sleeping, but the doc says she'll make a full recovery. She's asking for double her rate for future missions…and wants one of those armors Rogue was wearing. When we get back, you should visit her."

"As for a plan…we'll talk about it in the Lounge," Smasher says as he slips out of the room.

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by Risk on Jul 17, 2007, 8:37am

"That’s good…. I definitely will." I try to lift my head but it just isn’t willing.

"The plan – we do have one though, right? I mean… yeah." Again, the head isn’t willing to lift. This isn’t going to be good.

"You wouldn’t happen to have an equivalent to coffee or something, would you?"

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by watcher on Jul 17, 2007, 8:43am

Smasher says swelling with pride, "I make the best coffee in the Guard! And I have two huge pots full downstairs."

"As for the plan, that's more Sandor's area than mine. We're pretty much going to stall Nova long enough for resettlement ships to evacuate the planet. The D'Bari aren't too happy about it, but…well…this ain't the first time they've had to resettle…"

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by Risk on Jul 17, 2007, 8:46am

I tilt my head up again with a smile. This time, it’s kind enough to lift. "You might lose one of those pots as soon as I get down there.

"I suppose that makes sense on the plan. I mean, it would be enough of a feat if we could stall Nova, let alone defeat her, or god forbid, have to try to defeat Galactus."

-Roxanne-

I can feel him.

I stare out the window while the others move and talk around; I'm listening, but I'm not listening. It's faint, like this little whisper in the back of my ear, a gnat buzzing around my head…but, still, it's there. It's just like when I met Kalvin in the future and we touched. That power. That link. It makes sense, after all - in a way, Galactus is like my grandfather. My body, my blood, my mind seem to reach out to him, like I'm a small part of his whole.

I can feel him coming. And I've never been more terrified in my life.

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by watcher on Jul 17, 2007, 8:57am

Smasher nods, "Yeah, it's Guard policy to NEVER, EVER try and fight even a Herald. The Devourer is a cosmic force. Terrible, but necessary. That doesn't mean we won't do our best to save anyone caught in his path."

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by Risk on Jul 17, 2007, 9:01am

"It’s probably just morbid curiosity on my part, but I have to wonder how long we would survive if we actually fought Nova. I’m not wondering if we would survive, I’m not that delusional, it’s just…"

I should stop talking. It’s probably just the tiredness talking right now. Just… stop.

"Never mind."

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by watcher on Jul 17, 2007, 9:17am

"Not very long. Gladiator's grandfather was one of the greatest warriors in the Empire, and one of the founders of the Imperial Guard. His powers were even greater than Gladiator's, because he had nothing but confidence. The Silver Surfer under Galactus destroyed him with a stray blast."

«Totally made that up…No idea if Smasher is telling true history, Guard lore, or just making it up himself»

Re: X-Patriots #16 - The Devourer
Post by Risk on Jul 17, 2007, 9:26am

[To see Silver Surfer kick ass, look at the Exiles arc with Galactus the Restorer. At least, I think that’s what he was called.]

Despite myself, I smile lightly again.

"Yeah… I figured as much… I suppose it couldn’t hurt to try…."

Well… it could. It definitely could. And would.

"But that’s not what we’re here for, right? So how long before Nova gets there?"

That doesn’t sound good. And trailing off on a sentence like that is always confidence inspiring.

"Oh." I break away from trance, turning to the big guy - I remember Zephyr told me he had a tendency to get a little rough with this sort of thing. "Um, excuse me, Mr. Tank? Could you…when Nova gets here, can you promise me not to get too crazy, please? Galactus and Nova, they're real strong and I don't want anyone getting hurt…so just don't start anything too bad. Please."

"But if we run into the Kree, I’m sure you can feel free."

Sandor steps forward clearing his throat, "The D'Bari are a fairly advanced race of beings…who have the unfortunate distinction of looking like vegetables." link

"Their homeworld was destroyed by the Phoenix many years ago, and we helped relocate them to the Border, with the assistance of the Kree, who were our allies at the time. Since then, their technology has taken some…unusual turns. They have the capability for space flight, but have not built any starships. Hearing no questions, Sandor continues, "Their sensor network showed the approach of The Devourer's current herald, Nova. They were able to contact her, and Nova told them exactly when she was arriving, saying Galactus would be arriving not long afterwards. That is about two hours from now."

"When we get there, we will be joining the Shi'ar crews already on the planet to assist the with evacuation process. When Nova gets close, we will try to convince her to give us the time we need to get the rest of the planet evacuated. We will need at least three hours. There is a chance that she might take this news badly. Keep her away from the planet and ships, but be careful. This is a Herald we are talking about, and she's more powerful than all of you combined."

The building Fang is standing on is made of an odd substance. It feels like glass, but is completely opaque.]]

Skrull….in the neutral zone? Ah hell!

Fang leaped off the building coming down towards the Skrull. Impact webbing fired preparing the cacooning he would do when he got his legs on him.

Smasher turns around, "SETTLE DOWN, EVERYONE! He's with us!"

Many of the journalists look disgusted by the presence of a Skrull, too.

One of the D'Bari standing near by says, "They allow Terrans into the Guard, why shouldn't a Skrull be allowed?"

He seems to be an elderly stalk, struggling along with a heavy suitcase. Occassionally, a little burst of energy appears under it, helping it float along, but it keeps stalling and crashing.

"S'zk…When in hostile territory for said race, yes. We have just become targets." He said altering his fall slightly to land near him. His mandables were visibly shaking, and secreting there non lethal venom.
