What If….IN SPACE??? #2

Title: My Life in Three Parts, Part 2: Commitment

Cover – Glenda Chow at the age of 14. She is dressed in a New Mutants uniform.

Written by – Skitch (journal entries by the alwaysawesome Havok3595)

Note: This story is definitely not for kids and not work safe. I am trying to keep the language clean, but the imagery sure will not be. My goal here is no fast forwards until a scene is completely finished. The story starts with sex, and ends with violence…kind of like life

The Journal of Amelia Chow

I haven’t written in a while. I tell myself it is because there is too much to write. I am a single mother. I lead the New Mutants. I teach at the Institute. That’s a lot of work. I kept telling myself I didn’t have the time, but that wasn’t true. There is always time for everything you truly want to do. I just hadn’t set my mind to it properly, ever since Mike died. I wonder sometimes what happened to that journal. Marisol confiscated it because I kept rereading it constantly, reliving the past. I suppose she was right to have done that, but I sort of want to read it again, regardless.

So, I start a new journal today. After Chandilar, and everything that happened after, I realized I was late. Well, not immediately, but eventually. It still seems really odd to me…death and birth so closely tied together. I named our daughter Glenda after Mike’s little sister, then Rose because…I’m not sure. Glenda Rose Chow. I sort of wanted to give her Mike’s surname, but I thought it would be presumptuous.

Those early days are still strange to me. Lex babysat Glenda constantly, and if I went back in time and told my fifteen year old self that Lex would be the greatest babysitter ever, I think the fifteen year old me would die of laughter. I was always around, of course. I made sure to spend every moment I could with her, but when I wasn’t there, it was Lex. I was so pissed when she started calling him dad, but to Lex’s credit, it freaked him out just as much. Thank God that got nipped in the bud.

I wish there were lurid tales of romance to tell you, journal, but there are not. Ever since Mike died, I haven’t had the least bit of interest in that. I tell myself that he wasn’t actually “the one” and I just didn’t have enough time for men, but I really don’t believe that at all anymore. Especially now that Glenda’s grown a little more, and I see so much of her father in her. And so much of me. And it works together perfectly.

Too young…

Glenda Chow walked into the Danger Room control room, watching her mom and Aunt Mar going over plans for workouts for their students, "When can I join the New Mutants?" she blurted out.

Amelia and Marisol looked at each other without saying a word. Years of friendship had allowed the co-leaders of the New Mutants to have entire conversations this way. It drove everyone else nuts. Finally, Amelia turned to her daughter and said, "Glenda…you are only ten."

Glenda pouted, "But, Mom! I've had my powers since I was born! You've taught me, and Aunt Mar's been teaching me. And Uncle Lex, and Auntie Big Alexia. Lexi and I are better than most of the kids you teach. We're ready!"

Amelia sighed, putting her hand on her daughter's shoulder, "When you're 14. Not a day before. That was the deal we made."

Glenda smiled wickedly. Amelia was always surprised how much she looked like Mike when she made that face. And even after all this time, it still surprised Amelia how that never failed to make her feel happy and sad at the same time, "Yeah, but things have changed," Glenda imitated Amelia's voice almost perfectly, "Even with Professor Xavier being elected Vice President, there is still a lot of danger out there for young mutants. The Xavier Institute's purpose isn't gone; it's just changed."

Amelia looked stunned, "Do I really sound like that?"

Marisol nodded, "Yeah…sometimes. Well, most of the time really." Marisol smiled at her friend, "Hey, but it works for you. You get to be Xavier, I get to be Rogue."

Amelia chuckled slightly, still amazed by how much her friend has grown and changed over the years. They all had really. Most of the old team had moved on. Some had become politicians or doctors, some had become X-Men or Avengers. Some had gotten married (including Marisol herself) and some had died. But, Marisol and Amelia were still New Mutants.

Glenda waved her hand in front of Amelia's face, "Mom?" she said her voice full of worry, "Are you all right?"

Amelia blinked her eyes, "I'm fine. But, the answer is still no. When you are 14, you can join the team." I will not lose you like I lost your father

Glenda lowered her eyes to the ground, angry, but not wanting to show that to her mother. She needed to become a New Mutant as soon as possible. 4 years was an eternity! But, finally, Glenda sighed and said, "Okay, mother. Whatever you say!" Glenda sat down in the control room and just watched her mom and aunt work for a little longer before heading back to her room to read the journal one more time. Tears fell from Glenda’s eyes onto the pages.

It's so hard to find a good code name these days…

For their 14th birthday, some girls want ponies; some girls want jewelry. Glenda Chow wanted nothing more than a superhero costume. It's not all that surprising since her mother had been a superhero even before Glenda was born, and her father had tried to be a hero too, but from everything she had heard, her father's powers weren't all that impressive…and that had gotten him killed. Because of that, the only other thing Glenda wanted for her birthday was a chance to get revenge.

"What do you think of the code name China Doll?" Glenda said.

Alexia Serden rolled her eyes, "That's the best you could come up with?"

Glenda scowled at her, "Oh yeah, because Amethyst is the greatest code name ever, right?"
"Hey, it's not my fault by the time we came along all the cool superhero names are gone."

Glenda nodded moodily, "Yeah…maybe I can just steal a retired superhero's code name."

Alexia said, "How about your dad's?"

Glenda shook her head tightly, "No."

Alexia blinked at Glenda, "Why not? My dad would love that!"

"Just no!"

"Well you need to come up with something! It's tradition! You know that."

Glenda nodded, "I know. I know. I've been dreaming of this for a very long time, remember?"

"And in all this time, you never came up with a codename?"

"You're not helping!"

Alexia chuckled. She had been on the team for almost a year now, and felt bad that her friend had been "grounded" until today. Alexia had tried to take her to the city to celebrate her birthday, but Glenda had refused. She had even woken Alexia up two hours BEFORE her first training session to make sure her costume looked perfect.

"How about Legacy?" Glenda said, "Both of my parents were heroes…"

"That’s true. But, they both had cool code names…"

"Chi and Heaven are not cool code names…"

"Much better than China Doll and Legacy."

"The Tease?"

"Why don't you just call yourself Jailbait. AND no that was not a serious suggestion!"

"Maleficient?"
"Male-what-cient?"

"Lexi!!" Glenda whined, "Come on, think! We need a codename!!"
"What we? I already have one. How about Miss Take?"

"What?"

"Ms. Take! It fits."

"No, it doesn't."

Alexia shrugged, "Then, I'm tapped out."

Glenda pouted again. She brightens suddenly, "I got it! Dayglo Jr. The Ultimate Lass!"

Alexia walked out of the room, "I GIVE UP! Make sure you're downstairs by 9, or your mom is going to ground you for another year."

Glenda sat down on the bed and thought about it some more.

A few minutes later, Glenda walked into the Danger Room. She smiled at her mother and said, "Zen, reporting for duty!"

The Journal of Amelia Chow
My little girl is all grown up. If only her father were here to see it…
I had hoped Glenda would have given up on wanting to be on a field team by the time she was fourteen. I actively tried to discourage it, personally, but in the end, just like her father, and I suppose like her mother, there was no changing her mind once it was made up. Also like us, she chose a really horrible codename. I suppose, though, I’ll get used to calling her “Zen” eventually.

Her and Alexia will represent the school well, I think. I’m glad to have seen them both mature so much, and such good friends. And I truly believe that she has chosen this life because she wants to be like me.

One day, I must tell her about the father she never knew. One day. But I’ve put that one day off again and again…there never seems to be a good time.

I liked this even more than the first one, though I can't quite place why.

I like it a bit more too, it's nice to see more of Glenda, even though she's got horrible taste in codenames.

Still love it, even if I've already read it.

Don't blame Glenda, blame your fellow posters! They were the ones who suggested the names
