Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by K'lar on Jan 9, 2007, 11:15am

All right, this will be a little more normal than some of our other training missions. No switching of powers, no splitting the team in half to face of against each other. Anyone interested should sign in. Don't worry if you miss the sign in, you can always just jump right in later.

Nadia makes her way in, stretching as she walks. The upside of blowing herself up in space was that she got to have the best non coma related sleep she's had in months.

Marisol slinked into the room in her usual, inconspicuous manner. She looked around and headed straight for Zephyr.

Chi is at home visiting with his parents, so he missed this unscheduled training session. I will be posting the opening scene around noonish.

Current roster:
Zephyr
Osmosis
Wreck
Heatwave
Apath
Solidity
Stryker (up in the control booth)

«All right, opening post»

The door to the training room opens up, and the New Mutants are surprised to see Cyclops, not Rogue enter. "Good morning! I was talking it over with Rogue and Emma, and it seems you guys have some problems with covert missions." Cyclops's eyes fall on Zephyr. "So, Rogue asked me to set up a training program for you guys."

Damn it, I'd hope that little incident would've gone forgotten by now. Can't help but grumble a bit over it. "Would've worked…Emma's fault…her and her inconsistent British accent…"

Scott smiles at Zephyr, "That wasn't really meant as a criticism. Not of you guys at least. Let's face it, most of the the X-Men have never really been known for doing things quietly."

A pause.

"I probably wasn't supposed to mention that."

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by K'lar on Jan 9, 2007, 1:41pm

Scott looks at Wreck oddly, "I have no idea what that even means." Scott shakes his head and continues, "All right, so here's the set-up."

A miniature version of an office building appears before the team. Ten stories tall, glass windows, takes up an entire square block. Entrances on each side, plus access at the top.

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by K'lar on Jan 9, 2007, 1:43pm

Scott looks up towards the control room, "Gerald, glad to see you're up there. How about playing mission control up there? When you request it, the monitor will give you read outs on what's going on, as if you telepathically were scanning the building and you can relay it to your teammates."

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by K'lar on Jan 9, 2007, 1:55pm

Scott nods and points back at the building, "All right. Here's the situation. HYRDA has taken over this building, because they have heard that some type of powerful weaponry is being developed here."

"They have at least three large groups of hostages that you guys know of, spread throughout the building. They have vowed to kill a group of hostages if any kind of police or superhero involvement is noticed. This building had a couple hundred innocent people working here. Mostly scientists and clerical staff."

Marisol smiled back.
"Maybe," she said huskily, "Saving hostages doesn't really sound like it's up my alley…"

For a guy with one eye, Scott sees things pretty well, got to give credit.

Post by Marisol Morales on Jan 9, 2007, 2:02pm

Of course, they ALL did… She wasn't extraordinary in any way.

"We're supposed to rescue the hostages, right?" she asked, "And what about the weaponry?"

Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Jan 9, 2007, 2:15pm

"Hey guys. It looks like one of the groups of hostages is on the first floor, a ways away from the door, they're near some kind of support for the building. I think the HYDRA people there have a bomb, too, which would be able to crumble the building if things go bad.

"Another group is a few floors up, some kind of laboratory. It's a smaller group, probably just scientists.

"And then…I'm getting vague readings from below the building. Some kind of subbasement that seems to be telepathically shielded. Can't help much there."

Hmmmm…

"So, how do we distribute the tasks here?" she asked the others vaguely.

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by Squirrel Girl on Jan 9, 2007, 2:23pm

"Well, let's see…" I look around the building, trying to get a good grasp on the entrance. "I think our first priority should be taking that bomb out of the equation. I mean, we're not expecting for things to get hairy, but it'd be nice to know that it won't go that bad if they do."

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by Wreck on Jan 9, 2007, 2:23pm

"Well, our biggest problem is figuring out a way to stop a large group of soldiers without one of them setting off the bomb. Or alerting the other groups and fubaring the mission."

Wreck glances around.

"We could have Marisol here disguise herself as a civilian and get taken in as another hostage. She'd then get a good look at what we're up against, and probably be able to escape easily since none of them would suspect what she's capable of."

I'll scan people's thoughts and see if there's like an employee who is on their lunch break or whatever, and we could have Marisol be them, bumbling back in with a sack of sliders and completely clueless."

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by K'lar on Jan 9, 2007, 2:29pm

Intrigued by the idea, the GM allows it. There are a few employees out on lunch breaks. In fact, Stryker gets a sense of one of them around the corner in a small deli.

"Excellent." I hate to have her go in there alone; not that I'm unsure of her abilities, I just don't like the risk. Got to remember none of this is real… "Is there a skylight or anything? I can get us roof access easy, but I don't know how much good it'll do."

Flashbacks of the preppie Hellion he had nearly killed flash through Wreck's mind. He coughs, stumbling up to Mr. Mark.

"Spare change, mister?", he rasps in his best hobo voice. "I lost my sight in Nam and can't afford bifocals."

Wreck feels to the left and to the right of the extended 20, managing to whiff grabbing it entirely. Then he tilts his head so that his sunglasses fall from his face.

"103rd," he croaks, kneeling and feeling around for them while keeping his eyes hidden. "Suffered a horrible injury, I did."

Mr. Mark bends down to help Wreck.

"Got shrapnel in my eyes. See?"

Wreck looks up, staring at Mr. Mark with his teeth-eyes. Then he whips out a gun and quickly beans him over the head with it.

Catching him as he falls, he glances around, hoping that with this being New York and all, no one will notice him dragging the man into an alley.

Don't see much, but that doesn't mean there's not a problem. Still peeking from the roof's edge, I scan around and try to see if there's any cameras about. I also use a bit of my sixth sense to get a read of the area, just in case my eyes are fooling me.

Apparantly, this guy's neighbor has a cat who keeps crapping on his front lawn.

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by Marisol Morales on Jan 9, 2007, 3:31pm

Marisol concentrated on the image of Mark. It was… different, telepathically. The images in her mind were slightly hazy, but it gave her a much clearer picture than visuals would have, somehow.
She started changing. First of all, she become male. The hair got shorter, her figure did a heel-turn and become much bulkier, she lot a lot of curves, etc. She tried to imitate all the little touches as best as she could. Hopefully, it wouldn't matter. And, of course, she tried to imitate Mark's relaxed expression.

The voice was the worst part, of course. She just had Wreck's memory to rely on. Why did he have to knock him out? She changed her vocal chords and throat structure to emit something like Mark's voice sounded like. And she could always say she had a cough, or something…

She glanced at the others insecurely, and headed off into the building.

Christ, what a loon. But at least I know what his voice sounds like, now.

I drop down hard and fast, ramming my fist into the back of his neck and grabbing the headset with my spare hand, speaking into it. "Yeah, guys, I'm fine, sorry about that." I give him a kick in the ribs, a punch in the head, and the ALMIGHTY JUDO CHOP. "Just thought I heard a cat, was all. Damn cats…damn them to hell."

Dillan paced around the street corner by the beseiged office building impaitently.

God damn it. Even I think all this infiltration and espionage shit is boring. Need to be more proactive. What would Wolverine do in this situation? wondered Dil.

"Stryker." he said aloud, hoping what his message would be conveyed mentally. "What can you tell me about what's going on inside?"

Post by Chord on Jan 9, 2007, 3:51pm

"See, this is what I hate garthering intel. It only takes one joker to fuck it all up." cursed Dillan.

The entire scenario stank to him. Not because it was boring (which he thought it was) but because something just didn't make any sense. HYDRA was holding everyone hostage to get the weapons supposedly being developed in the building. It confused him how even a second rate terrorist organization like them hadn't already managed to crack some soap spined scientist into guiding them into the lab in the sub-basement.

I mean if they had just walked in, shot everyone but one scientist and told him to take them to the weapons, the chances are pretty slim that'd he'd say no. Something reeks here.

"Or maybe I'm just looking at this far too literally and forgetting that we're supposed to be saving hostages…god damn it."

«::chuckle:: Sorry, I was away for lunch.»

From a general scan, no real change from Stryker's earlier scan….although the presense watching the roof is gone.

Zephyr

Over his comm, Zeph can hear some chatter. Thankfully it all seems to be about number 71's mental health, and not the possibility that he was knocked out. Unfortunately, it seems like they will be sending someone up to replace Phil.

Marisol

Marisol enters the building and is immediately grabbed by HYDRA soldiers. One points a gun at her, "Who the hell are you?"

Another HYDRA agent says, "It's Captain America!! He's here for us!! I knew this plan was a disaster!!!"

"Settle down! This guy's not Captain America…for one thing, Captain America isn't Asian…"

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by Marisol Morales on Jan 9, 2007, 4:02pm

Marisol really didn't consider herself a very good actor, but she had to do her best here…
The first and most important thing was to use her brain… or stuff. It had brought her far with Wildfire, it would service her well on other things.
While talking to Wreck, Mark had mention that he had been a soldier. Would a soldier panic and squirm in such a situation? Probably not.

She stood still in the soldier's grasp, but raised her hands upwards slightly. She conjured up an expression of surprise and concentration, and glanced around in the room, trying to assess everything… and trying to look like she was assessing everything, too.
"Who are you?" she asked with a hardened voice, "What the hell is this?"

Of course, anything she did could look extremely wrong to Mark's actual coworkers…

One of the HYDRA soldiers says, "ALL HAIL HYDRA! CUT OFF something…. AND A DOZEN MORE WILL…uhm…something…."

"Newbs…We're HYRDA. We've taken over this building, Mr…" the HYDRA guy with the gun pointed at her looks at Solidity's name badge, "Mr. Stanley Mark. You picked a really bad time to come back from lunch." He points to two other guys, "Put him with the rest of the hostages."

Marisol let herself be led away. She made sure to look sufficiently worried, while trying to do a quick head-count of the hostages and troops, as well as assessing the weapons of the HYDRA grunts.

Re: Training Mission 3 - Hit 'em high, hit 'em low
Post by K'lar on Jan 9, 2007, 4:19pm

Marisol is able to send that info right out to Stryker. The soldiers seem mostly inexperienced. Quite a few of them (just being led down the hall, Solidity notices 25 of them), but no real physical threat. BUT, they also look extremely nervous, which could cause all kinds of problems. Pretty well armed. Laser weapons, and grenades of some sort on their belts.

Marisol is led to the lower group of hostages. There seem to be able twenty of them, guarded by fifteen armed HYDRA soldiers. These soldiers seem much better trained and disciplined than the ones she encountered in the entrances. On the far side of the room, against one of the buildings' supports, there is a complicated device that Marisol believes is a bomb. Granted, she has no way of knowing for sure, but it is a very save assumption. There are two very stoic HYDRA men standing in front of this bomb.

My original plan was to bring some of the others up with me after I'd cleared the roof, but I don't think that's happening now; they'll be a little suspicious if the guys comes up and there's no one here to replace. Need to be fast about it.

Switching clothes with the guy might be a problem, too; even if he is my size, they're bound to notice that their friend suddenly turned into an albino. Think fast, think fast…

I take the guy over my shoulders and drop down, dumping him on the street, away from the others. I figure I'll wait until his replacement is coming, make a scream that sounds like Unconscious Man here, drop a garbage can from the sky, and…it should look like their buddy committed suicide. If anything, it'll get them confused without the worry of superhero shennanigans.

"This is absolutely perfect." laughed Dil as the body of an HYDRA soldier fell from the roof of the building, almost directly at his feet. "Looks like Zephyr's finally had a good udea." grinned Dil as he dragged the man into an alley and put on his uniform before the next part of his plan.

Dillan used his powers to warp into one of the middle floors. It'd be far too fishy if he had just used the front door.

"Now to find another group of soldiers, trick them into getting a scientist into leading us to the weapons, disarm the HYDRA goons, and then sit back and relax while my teammates do the boring job of saving the hostages." chuckled Dil quietly as he began his "patrol" through the halls of the building.

Dil's wrong code word alerts the soldiers immediately. Before he can react, the soldiers immediately start to radio that there is an intruder. Shots ring out from around the building as numerous hostages are exectuted. The mission freezes.

Cyclops smiles at Solidity, "Perfect! You moved in position smoothly, didn't overreact, relayed information out to Stryker. You just need more confidence in yourself."

Cyclops appears before Dil, "Nice idea, but you can't just rush in on your own like that. Avoid contact with HYDRA until you have someone in position at each location to react and protect the hostages."

Cyclops nods to Zephyr, "Not bad, but if that soldier decided to report in, instead of shooting first, it would have blown the whole mission."

Wreck shakes head at Wreck, "You need to do a better job protecting possible assets. Other than the fact there was no need to knock that guy out, Marisol could have used a better look at him and time to get his voice down. Plus, he might have been able to tell you exactly what was going on in the building. Possibly securtity assets, etc."

Cyclops nods at Stryker, "Pretty good job, but be a little more proactive when you are guiding them. You had people standing around doing nothing, when it might have been better to see if they could get you some close hand information."

"Coordinate your efforts better, and try again." Cyclops starts the program over from scratch.

"…..screw it. Once we get Lex inside, he melts all of their guns. Problem solved."

«Sorry, lasty, I missed that.»

The guard comes out. Zeph is able to subdue him without incident and get the headset. A few seconds later a voices comes over the headset, "71! Check in! Anything going on out there?"

Heatwave approaches Mr. Mark. A quick hushed conversation, and Mr. Mark nods. Heatwave leads him back to his teammates. "Lex here said you guys need some help. Whatever I can do, just tell me. This is almost as bad as the time the Mutant Liberation Front came through here. Ever have your molecules warped by a time twister? I was unable to have sex for a month…"

If the whole superhero thing doesn't work, I can always find work as a voice actor. "Everthing's fine up here. Looking good, really; no sign of the Avengers or anything. Guess they're finally taking the might HYDRA seriously."

Marisol walked up to Mark with an uncertain expression.
"Uh, hello," she said, "I'm gonna be turning into a facsimile of you shortly. The next part will be really, really unpleasant, but I promise it won't hurt. Could you… open your mouth please?"

It was a silly thing to say to a hologram.

Mark looks at her, slightly nervous, but does as she says.

Zephyr pauses waiting for a response, "Stay alert, Phil. Don't get cocky. Only reason we have not been swarmed by heroes is because this mission was kept extremely quiet. If they knew about it, they'd be here, hostages be damned. All Hail Hydra!"

"….I wonder if he'd buy that High Command told Phil to rearrange the hostages in one place?", Wreck mutters.

Marisol very suddenly jammed her entire arm into Mark's mouth. While it wasn't very visible, she briefly expanded it inside his throat to get a "picture" of the way his vocal chords and other things associated with speaking. It left him unable to breathe for a few seconds and invited a strong gagging reflex, so she pulled out her hand as quickly as she could… After all, he had just eaten.

She tried replicating the shape he had felt inside him in her own throat, also combining the build with her own thoughts about his voice.
"How do I sound?" she asked nervously.

"All hail HYDRA!" It actually feels kind of good to say that. Not that I care about HYDRA, but there's something about screaming things out loud. Just invigorating.

I float back to the ground with 'Phil' on my shoulders, just in time to hear Wreck's suggestion. "Might work. Could give it a try."

Marisol's voice hits me next, sounding pretty good, if I do say so. "Not bad."

«technically, he had just bought his lunch…Lex interrupted him before he could eat his lunch »

Mr. Mark coughes a bit. He manages a slight smile, "I thought you said that wouldn't hurt. Is that really what I sound like?" The other New Mutants nod at him, "No wonder I got beat up a lot in high school…"

"Yeah… um, sorry."

She looked at Mark intently and tried to repeat the process of making herself look like him. Seeing him in the flesh made things both harder and easier, in their own ways.

"So when should I leap in and cut the power?"

"As soon as Marisol gets to the hostages. And if we can get them all grouped together through Phil rather than on separate floors, that would make it all way easier…..otherwise, I guess you'd just have to cut power solely on the floor Marisol goes to."

Wreck pauses.

"And then after it's cut, come back out here, grab the rest of the team and teleport them in. We'll have to do it quick, if we don't want dead hostages."
