Generation X presents:

In Viking warrior societies, dying in battle is the highest honor one can attain. One earns an afterlife in Hel by dying in bed. One earns a place in Valhalla by dying, with honor, in battle.

These events precede Generation X # 1

Fimbulvintr - Part I of IV
“Drain the Blood”

The soldier removes her K-BAR from the Lieutenant’s stomach, wiping the sides of the blade on the officer’s sleeve. “Intimacy,” she says, her cold eyes staring into his. “When you kill a man with a bayonet, it becomes a personal affair. Your blood running through my fingers. Warm. Sometimes they scream.” She pushes his body to the floor. “Not as often as you’d think.”

From the Lieutenant’s office, she sets up her sniper’s nest. The rest of the base is wired to blow, and this isn’t usually her expertise, but she needs a confirmed kill on the General before she can report back with a clean conscience. Lying on the desk next to the window, she waits. They’ll be in formation for their morning inspection soon.

One shot, one kill.

Elsewhere:

It’s hot, Tangent thinks, crouched in the dense treetops. A break in the monsoons that plagued the valley around the terrorist encampment, and the only reward is a steel grey sky pressing down the heat and moisture. She shifts her legs, fighting the cramps, and waits.

The three Jeep convoy slogs down the swampy path a mile from her location, and the little girl in the trees wraps one arm around a branch for support, and raises her communicator to her lips: “Contact.”

The muddy road firms up, and while the vehicles find traction, the mud hardens too quickly around the wheels, and then they are stuck. Lyra watches as the soldiers sit in their vehicles confused, and then there’s an explosion of blood and ice shards from the forward Jeep. The patch of road frosts over completely as Skadi emerges through the shattered windshield.

Tangent accepts the signal and raises her rifle, her sweat smearing the scope. Three trigger pulls and the guards in the rear vehicle never even make it out of their seats.

On the side of the road, Fahrenheit and Huldiir emerge, walking briskly towards the middle Jeep. The driver and a soldier emerge from the front, training their rifles on them. Huldiir smiles, and the driver smashes the soldier in the face with his rifle-stock, then places the barrel in his mouth. She blows him a kiss, and the single shot echoes over the roadway, followed by the dull thud of the body hitting the icy mud.

Skadi slips over to Huldiir as Fahrenheit steps forward, tearing the canvas cover off of the Jeep. In the back, a man is huddled, clutching a brief case. She picks him up by the back of his neck like a rag doll, and snatches the case away while snapping his neck. The chill of her touch ensures a clean separation.

“Objective One acquired. Where are we on Objective Two?” Huldiir holds her hand to her ear, her back to the wrecked convoy, unwilling to witness Skadi playfully dismembering the dead soldiers.

Down the road, Tangent flits through the treetops until she finds a suitable perch to observe the convoy’s destination. “Over,” and she runs her binoculars over the slip-shod encampment of tents, hastily assembled wire fences, and metal storehouses. The landing pad is in flames, the Hind half-off the helipad, rotor blades sparking along the ground. Tangent sighs, “Objective Two looks to be completed, but I can’t reach her.”

Huldiir looks at her team, then at her watch. “Make for the Extraction Zone. She’ll be there or she won’t.”

**

Inque swears to herself as she kicks through the underbrush. The ground is soggy and laden with roots and vines. She can barely see the sun through the thick canopy and thunderheads, but she knows she’s heading in the right direction. There’s the bark of a dog behind her, and several soldiers tramping after her. She hates dogs.

Throwing her left arm up in a tendril, she flips onto a low hanging branch, biting her lip as she looks at her watch. Not enough time. All the time in the world. Depending on how this plays out.

Moments later, they emerge beneath her – four soldiers and a Doberman. She slowly drips down the branch to the tree trunk, like sap, and once she’s closest the rear guard, she solidifies and throws her thighs around his neck, twisting quickly, then kicking his AR-15 up into her hands, firing two three-round bursts as she piggyback rides the corpse down. The other two soldiers fall.

One soldier, one dog, and she’d still have the element of surprise. The point man turns around, rifle raised towards the commotion, and finds his friend gripping his shoulder, pointing into the dense forest. The Doberman growls, but once his head is turned, Inque lets loose another burst of fire, overshadowing the hound’s yelp.

She tosses the rifle into a puddle and breaks into a sprint, occasionally flipping and launching herself over obstacles with her tendrils.

***

The Blackhawk’s rotors clatter like thunder, throwing dust and debris every which way. Conrad Fox sits in the pilot seat, swatting Fahrenheit’s wandering hands away from the console. Fahrenheit growls at Conrad, but a stern look from Huldiir causes the entire cabin to silence.

“We’re out of time. They’re sure to know of the compromised base by now. We need to fly,” Huldiir says, fastening herself in and nodding to Conrad.

Conrad obediently readies the helicopter, as the thunderheads roar overhead, and fat drops of rain splatter against the windshield.

There’s a dark blur on the edge of the clearing, and Inque bursts through, leaping and catching her torso on the helicopter’s skid as it takes off. She casts an amused look at Huldiir, who rolls her eyes as Tangent and Fahrenheit pull her in.

“Took you long enough,” Huldiir sighs.
“Worth the wait?” Inque grins as she fastens herself in and the Blackhawk begins rattling against the high winds.
“Only on our end. We know where we need to be.”

She passes Inque the briefcase acquired from the convoy, and Tangent peers over Inque’s shoulder to see the contents.

“Phase one is in Svalbard?” Inque raises an eyebrow.
“Phase one is in Svalbard,” Huldiir replies, leaning back in her seat and closing her eyes.

Good stuff, Amy. The Sons are very interesting, and I wish to know more

Cool shit. But is there gonna be a reason for Fahrenheit not being in Svalbard?

Yes, there is a reason Fahrenheit, Valkyr, and Totem were absent from Svalbard.

I'm assuming we Sons get split up since Conrad wasn't there either. Anyway, love the story, can't wai to see how it all plays out. Since you're a GM I'll award you 15 DDR Fun Experience Points redeemable at the DanDeRuff store.

Good stuff, but now I'm wondering if we'll get to see any our battle against the sons from their perspective.

All that plus art from the MGS Art Book. Impressive.

Considering the blatant rip I pulled in their creation, I thought it was appropriate.

Is that… Is that Sniper Wolf?

Obviously.

A simple "Yes" would have sufficed. Although I understand that wouldn't increase the size of your E-wang as much as sarcasm.

Quit talking about my e-wang, pedophile.

Very nice, and I'm anxious for future stuff. Ditto on Dil's suggestion, but anything would be nice.

Yeah. Considering the Sons' core archetype/abilities were homages to Foxhound and the Sons of Liberty, I thought it'd be appropriate.

For the record, that's Inque on the cover.
