“They’re ready for you, Commander Hill.”

Maria Hill sighs and pushes the door open, just a crack, and peers through. “Thank you.”

She hadn’t been looking forward to this. Not at all. It was bad enough that she had stooped this low, but that she had stooped this low over children?

Someone’s going to pay for it.

“Good morning, gentlemen.” Pace the steps carefully, no over-confidence in them – hard for that to be the case when she feels like she might be shaking instead – and no weakness in them. Make them just right. She gets to her desk without slipping or showing any fear. Really… she’ll take that as victory.

“You’re here today because… well, you all know why you’re here today. You’re here because we have a group of very dangerous children out there. Dangerous children who’ve already taken lives. Over 1500 hundred at last count, and there could still be bodies that haven’t been reached yet. Not all of the rubble’s been shifted.”

She sits down, slowly. Carefully. She never takes her eyes off of the men and woman in front of her.

She’s almost afraid to.

“I don’t trust the Avengers to do this job, because they will not do it by the book. The Hellions – that’s the mark – were… by loose definition, heroes before this, and that would make that a hero against hero situation. Ironically enough, that annoying misunderstanding/gratuitous property damage fad that they seem to have running notwithstanding, heroes don’t like to fight heroes, and they will hesitate enough for the kids to get away.”

She rises slightly, stands in front of her seat. She doesn’t want to seem anxious, but at the same time, she can’t stay still too long while speaking with them.

The worst part about this is that the kids… aren’t really the killers. Indirectly, they may be somewhat responsible, but not as much as I’m trying to have them held. But I need to get my hands on them, one way or another.

“We can’t send heroes after heroes, former though they may be. Even with that lie about policing their own. That’s why we’re sending you. That’s why we’re sending villains. That’s why we’re sending you. Melissa Gold. Abner Jenkins. Chen-Lu. Erik Josten. Paul Ebersol. Karla Sofen.”

“What’s in it for us?” Ebersol asks, leaning back in his chair.

“A pay check and a full presidential pardon for all of your crimes and all of your sins to date, on record or not. The only higher level of forgiveness you could ever need is God’s.”

She plants her hands down on her desk and turns to face them.

“Any questions?”

“Yeah,” Josten says with a grin. “Where do I sign?”

As the rest of the team leave the room, Hill catches Melissa.

"There's actually one more person on your team, Gold - we just didn't bring her up before, because, well… she's fairly less agreeable than the rest?

"Oh?" Melissa asks, turning to face Hill.

"Yeah. Katrina Horn. I'm not sure if the name rings a bell."

"It does," Melissa sighs before turning to leave the room. "Fun… we get to deal with the Man-Killer…"


"Then I say; 'Yeah? Share this!'" Man-Killer says, punching the air.

"So you hit her?" Abner Jenkins, the Beetle, asks. "Or did some weird mime routine.

"Well, I didn't do either, actually. But she deserved it, don't you think?"

"Nobody deserves a mime, Katrina," Jenkins tells her sagely, putting on his last piece of his new, SHIELD issue armour suit - MACH.

"Come on, kids, you're not ready yet?" Jostner asks them, shifting into a twelve-foot tall state.

"Give us a break, 'Power Man'," Jenkis calls out.

"Atlas."

"What?"

"Atlas."

"Fine, whatever gets you your kicks," Jenkins shrugs. "But you gotta call me MACH."

Karla Sofen, Moonstone, whirls around to face them. "Shut up. Both of you. There's their bus - go check it out, Man-Killer."

Katrina jumps over to the bus and her eyes drop straight onto the wheels.

"Yeah, they're long gone.

"On the other hand," Jenkins starts, "Maybe they just stepped out for a smoke."

Katrina runs her hand down the side of the bus and looks at it.

"For eight hours?"

"It's addictive, you know," he shrugs.

"Let's all of you be quiet, and we'll go to the town," Melissa says, pointing in the direction of the small town the Hellions are staying in.

"Hey, you're not the boss of me," Jenkins snaps.

"Actually, I am."

As soon as they get to the town, a flower girl bearing leaflets for the next sermon at the local church approaches Melissa

"Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior?"

Melissa does a double take before glaring at Jenkins and Josten who're both struggling not to burst out laughing.

"Uh, you know I meant to and then I just got really busy…"

The girl looks like she's going to press the matter before her eyes fall on Man-Killer. Then she makes herself scares.

"Whew," Melissa sighs. "That saved me from having an uncomfortable situation get worse… what've we got here, anyway? Any hotel, anything around where they could be staying?"

"Um, pretty sure there's an inn nearby," Jenkins shrugs.

"There we are, then."

"You up for a little reconnaissance?" Jenkins asks, turning to Josten.

"You mean where we all sculpt and paint and stuff?"

"No, that was the Renaissance."

"Oh. I've had a really long week. Let's go look at the inn."

"Both of you are morons," Moostone shouts, cutting them off.

"Thank you, Karla," Melissa sighs. "Abner, how do you feel about digging through the Inn's registry, files, that stuff while I talk to the manager and seeing, what you can find?

"I feel pretty good about it. Does that make me a sociopath?"

"I really don't care right now. Wait, do you hear something?"

"I'm chewing my gum kinda loud," MACH replies.

"That's not it," Melissa frowns.

"My armour's a little creaky."

"I'm looking for something a little more lurky here."

"Oh." He stops, tries to listen for something. "No, I got nothing."

"Fine," Melissa sighs again. "Go to the inn. I'll be over there in a moment. Go through the registry, and if they're there, you and Atlas evacuate the building. You know what to do, right Fixer?"

"Techno."

"What is it with all of you and your new names? God!"

"I'm sorry, what did you say, Songbird?"

"… Okay, fair point. You've got everything?"

"Yeah," he nods. "I'm just going to go set it up."

"Good." She gets a tap on the shoulder and swings around, a little stressed. "What?!"

"I just wanted to know if I could have a word," Moonstone says.

"Have a sentence, even."

"Are you sure this is the best way to do this?" Moonstone asks Melissa.

"Yes. Now don't confuse me with the details, and go get ready for your part."

"I don't get it," Man-Killer says. "We're SHIELD issue. Shouldn't we just have-"

"What," Josten interjects "a license to kill? We kinda have that."

"Well, yeah, but not for fun, but shouldn't there be different rules for us?"

"Maybe in a fascist society," Josten drawls.

"Right! Why can't we have one of those?"

Abner walks back out of the Inn and slaps Josten around the back of the head.

"They're in there. Songbird just went in."

"Can we please just do this the peaceful way? My name is Melissa Gold and I'm a representative of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the field leader of the S.H.I.E.L.D. issue 'superhero' team the Thunderbolts. If you haven't heard of us, that's because we just formed yesterday. And I'm afraid that you're each of you under arrest for the murder of fifteen hundred people - the citizens of the town of Gaia.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you at interrogation time and at court.

He glances at the others.

"Long, arduous hours of practice. Now we stay put until we get a signal."

"I'm really tempted to just burst in, I'll tell you that."

"Argh!" Melissa drops the cell-phone and a very long, pointy heel goes straight through it.

Cue the Hellions walking out. She sighs and turns to them, suddenly quite uncertain of the situation.

[Thunderbolts have been formed by Hill. They were sent after the Hellions to bring them in, because Hill doesn’t trust the Avengers to do it. The Thunderbolts sent the field leader, Songbird into the inn where the Hellions are staying, after sorting out some ‘arrangements’. Songbird read them the Miranda Rights, and they’ve surrendered peacefully, and invoked their right by the Miranda Rights for a lawyer. Since then, they’ve been discussing whether or not they’ll get a fair trial, etc. For the last important part, see my last post;
