Consecration is everything.

A joke. A light hearted chuckle comes from his mouth. Tonight wouldn’t matter – things couldn’t be that quick. That easy. They wouldn’t get what they wanted yet.

Still, one thing kept on nagging, tugging at the corner of his mind, getting louder and louder until it screams at him, driving the jokes and the chattering away, leaving the single whisper. Repeating. Repeating… repeating…

"Consecration is everything."

He laughs again as he whispers the words to himself. He doesn’t have everything he needs yet- they aren’t that simple to invoke. But the children on their path… they run from fear and into fear. It’s good enough.

Easy enough, at any rate.

Children know of fear just as much as they can imagine, and just as little as they will admit. And the best thing is… the pattern can’t be seen. It wouldn’t make any sense to them yet, not yet privy to the whole puzzle. The whole plan. They’re too close to it all to see things properly. Or is he thinking of what comes next? It’s so easy to forget.

Straw… the straw’s still to come. The real one, in all of his glory. A distraction at first, maybe, and a little one to get him enough of their nadir to feed them. How proud, the Dweller would be.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself… words are just words. Only words of power mean anything. And to Belephos, Franklin Roosevelt’s words were not words of power.

So let the games begin, as his master obsession would lead…

[Barring any unforseen complications, this will run tonight.]

It’s a smell. A smell, and a feeling. A notion, or something of the like. It drives it, drags it towards the notion, leading it on. It can’t really resist… it isn’t in it to do so. It feels the fear, and cries for it.

More than the sorrow, though, it feels rage. The fear fuels the thing on while it leaks out in front of him, a blatant trail for it to track.

So it comes, to find what causes fear and to introduce it to its touch, its tender, loving embrace, laced with rage.

But why is it, that what ever knows fear, burns at the Man-Thing’s touch?

As the Hellions are rolling by the lovely countryside, the bus jolts dangerously, its brakes locking even while it tries to drive against it. A smell of burning rubber rises to the open windows. Laynia rushes over to the controls and turns the bus off.

"That's not supposed to be flashing, is it?" she asks, pointing at the red flashing light on the bus' control computer.

"You, shut up," Laynia says, pointing at both Kee'an and Darya.

Banner goes to the computer.

"Oh, god damn it. Stark's shut the bus down remotely. I can get it back up, but it'll take a while. And by that, I mean a few hours. We can't really afford to stay still for that long without any real shelter, especially while the bus' shielding won't protect us from any sort of assualt that SHIELD might launch if they somehow get a lock on us. That shouldn't happen - we've got shielding on a twenty mile radius, but… show of hands, who wants to risk it?"

”Aw… Fine! But you owe me a DVD after this!”

“Maybe if you shut up for two moments.”

“… They’re out. Can we go now?”

The bazooka detonates in midair, saving the Hellions, the bus, and all of their things.

Fun of all funs, Spur darts down the hill that the Vanguard were on, rushing at the Hellions and building speed as she runs down, using it to deliver a punch to Kee’an.

”Sorryjustordersgottawaitforyoutostopandthendowhatthatstupidfailedexperiementdidn’tmanage.”

The ground sort of starts shaking. It's pretty much imperceptible. The Hellions notice for the first time that maybe a hundred or so metres down the road there is a graveyard on their right. Directly on their left is a farm and its field. And right next to it is another. And another. And another.

Whims aren’t always as whimsical as people think. Bellphos knows it, at least. His fingers ghost out of Tony Stark’s skull – in fact, Stark will never know he was even there.

“Owowowowowow!” Spur shakes her hand as she dashes over to Kee’an and kicks him in the gut. “I hate the smaller injuries! They take longer to heal than, say, a broken neck. It’s annoying!”

Malady flinches and suppresses a scream as the first bullet enters her arm and then is forced out by a bone growth. She makes Darya feel her pain.

A feedback rushes into Wreck when he tries to disintegrate Swathe’s brand new robotic arms, shielded with energy.

Ruth slides over to Banner and locks eyes with him.

“You’re angry… angry enough to beat him to death,” she says, pointing at Alexander.

I raise my shield in front of my face to defend against the flash and preserve my vision. Immediately afterwards I hang it back on my… back, and pull up the bow. I let arrows fly towards Swathe and while I wouldn't be opposed to actually hitting her, they're mostly a distraction as I get closer to her. Striking range.

I suddenly really, really hope that this stolen ax is magical.

I drop the bow and don't bother with the shield. It's the Hulk. I'm holding and ax in one hand and a sword in the other as Big Green lands by me. I immediately slash at his throat with the Ax. He heals and is much stronger than I am. Playing it safe is retarded.

Bellephos closes his eyes – concentration would be important for this. It isn’t Samhain, so the rain wouldn’t be right… that means he’s got to make it right. So he sits. He thinks. And he concentrates.

The ax slices into his throat but it doesn’t make it to the bone. He grabs it by the handle with a roar, rips it out and kicks Alexander back. Fairly forcefully. He doesn’t do anything else, though. Not yet, not while he clutches his throat, taking a moment to heal.

"We both have alot of pent up rage."

The only people still standing are Jolt, Swathe and the Hulk. Jolt runs over to Alexander and takes advantage of his position, kicking him.

The Hellions cut through the zombies quite effectively… but as their numbers lessen, they seem to be getting stronger… and that's not to say that there aren't that many of them anymore. They still horde over the Hellions, and it looks like they could be quite effective at wearing them down.

One group of five pin Kee'an down, reaching, oddly enough, for his eyes.

You're a traitor to the Fear Lords, and, well, to be honest, you're an embarrassment. So you're being replaced with Samhain for now, and frankly, he'll do a better job, too. He snaps his fingers, and the scarecrow rises off of the cross, stepping down, hissing at Bellephos.

"Heard it before."

"The Straw Man isn't some pawn for you, you-" he catches himself and his face contorts in rage as Bellephos just grins. The Straw Man's hands go to his own throat, choking… and then the struggle ceases.

"Thank you for that… It's been a while since I've been in a straw body, and the rain doesn't tend to fall on my day."

Bellephos gets up and bows. "Welcome back, Samhain."

Samhain stares at the Hellions, and the gestures at the zombies, all of which drop.

"Is that my meal."

"Of course."

"Good. I'm hungry," he says, making his way over to them, as waves of fear hit them… the calling card of a fear lord.

The bullets pass right throw Samhain's straw body. He laughs - an eerie, discordant sound, that rings through the clearing. His head tilts back and his eyes fall on the sky, where a storm starts to roll in, lightening from which strikes Wreck.

Wreck finally gets up from rocking on the ground and mumbling long enough to plant a field around…..whatever that is, then constrict it just as quickly.

And then he gets struck by lightning and dies.

I grab the larger part of the snapped tree and attempt bashing the scarecrow with it. Hellions. Considering how much supernatural crap we get involved in, I would say a name change is in order.

And he reforms as material drags together from all around, laughing that eerie, resounding laugh again, sending ripples of fear into the Hellions again.

"I knew your trick wouldn't keep him down," Banner says. "We need fire… we need consecrated ground! A church, or - would the graveyard still be consecrated?"

[It was a trick, but remind me to never have you fight someone who's brainwashed, or something :)! Sorry, I had to step away for a moment.]

He catches fire and burns away in just a few moments. His screams come out more as hisses, searing their ears and further propagating the fear. Blood boils beneath his skin and bursts out, splattering over Darya's face, proving he has some. The few straws that remain lift up into the air and blow away.

Samhain is done.

Fear she felt fear, and it was worse than before. She didn't really like it, she screamed. Before blood splattered her face.

"Ew…."

[Not having her fight people like that is probably for the best.]

[Just realised that I forgot about something.]

And as he burned away, something cracked underneath him. The ground clear, a special tomb becomes visible… and its seal broken by the violent burning.

A rumbling, commanding voice comes from beneath the seal as a green, scaly hand emerges.

"You have freed me from where that insipid peon of the game master, Bellephos sealed me… I thank you for that. Allow me to show you my gratitude… you will have the honour nourishing me. I have not eaten in so long…. and I am very hungry."

Full emerged, he stares at the the Hellions, awe and fear inspiring in his form.

"I am Furcht! I am fear, itself!"

Or at least, he would be awe and fear inspiring, if his voice wasn't so high-pitched, and he wasn't six inches tall.

Epilogue One:

"Well, wasn't that fun? Sorry you didn't last that long. Too close to consecrated ground, and, well… you set him on fire. Mm? Oh, yes. I thought you might have found that little bugger, Furcht, getting snuffed like that amusing.

"No, of course not. We've got to go meet the others.

"…

"Ah, yes. Well… I sort of lied, Samhain." Bellephos shakes the bottle he's holding and takes the lid off, taking the red piece of straw inside, lying among the rest of the yellow straw, and throws it on the floor, setting it alight.

"You're done, Samhain. The Straw Man may be a liability, but he's the Fear Lord, not you. Now… I've got a meeting to arrange…"

Epilogue Two:

"Is that all that you ever do?" the tone is a little impatient when the Champion turns to his 'brother'. "Play games?"

"I was under the impression that your 'contests' were little different." The Grandmaster glances at him, showing little patience in turn. "Did you need something?"

Oh, god, the arrogance in this room… it's sickening. I could crush everyone in here like a bug - and yet they prance around like they're the alpha and the omega.

Oh, don't look at me that way. I said could, not would.

"Yes, actually. I wanted to know when I would have my 'contest' in these matters of yours," the Champion asks.

The Grandmaster walks past him and stares out at… me? Does he see me? No… that can't be it. It isn't possible.

"Soon. I need them out of the way for the game to reach its apex, and you need your little contests for you to thrive. It is mutually beneficial. You can play with the little ones that seem to incessantly reappear in the most inconvenient places and times. My business is with the Avengers… really, it is with all of the 'heroes'. I suppose if they manage you, then they can involve themselves too…"

"Manage me? You'd be wise to be mindful of your tone, 'brother', lest it cost you something precious."

"Yes, yes, I'm sure," Grandmaster mutters, continuing to stare outwards.

I've heard enough. I really have. Not only are they unbelievably conceited, but they're reckless - not only with each other, but with the mortal lives they interfere with - lives they have no right to interfere with.

Forget fatalism.

Oh my god.

The words aren't literal - I've met him. Impressive, certainly, but I'm not sure that an immortal like myself would go to him if ever I could die. Surprisingly enough, that's a direct concern as the Grandmaster's eyes fall on me and I feel something tug.

That shouldn't be possible. He shouldn't be able to see me. But that's not the only thing happening that shouldn't be possible.

"I've wondered before…" he starts slow, savouring the moment. Oh god. I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know what's going to happen! "… how my 'power over life and death' would affect one who is immortal…"

I scream.
