The Buyout [Mission #22 Related]
Post by Kelly Alecia "Star Girl" Lisa on Sept 5, 2007, 3:47pm

[Since I don't really have any idea about the current state of S.H.I.E.L.D., this takes place before the The Hunters New Mutants Mission.]

Maria Hill isn’t very pleased at the moment. It could be because her organization is in disarray. It could be because they’ve been outrun by a team of teenagers for a couple of months now. It could be because the entire country is going insane.

It could be because of a lot of things, really, but the fact is, it's not. It’s because, on top of all of that, she just got some more bad news.

With a grunt, she steps up from her seat and hurls the computer at the desk to the floor. It crackles slightly before dying amidst a cacophonous whine that preludes a dull hum, and then silence. The aide who was standing in front of her the moment before, jumps back in alarm.

"So you’re telling me I just wasted a couple of months worth of man force, money and time on a team of teenagers for nothing?"

"Y-yes, sir! I mean, ma’am!" The aide splutters. "There were no traces of psychic residue, confirming what we originally found at the site when there wasn’t any genetic material except for the Hellions’ and that thing from Prometheus, ma’am!"

Her expression warps into a snarl- at the very least, an expression of extreme displeasure- but she controls it, settling back into a neutral state.

"Do you know what we could have accomplished with that effort and time?" She waves a hand dismissively before he responds. "It was rhetorical. We just lost any reason for this… well, any of the important ones."

"What about Carmen Rosewell?"

"Money, power, influence and contacts don't mean what they used to for mutants," she responds curtly, settling into her seat again. "We aren’t going to just leave them- not yet, there’s something else that we can do with this. But it does mean this has been a damned waste; even more so than it seemed to be before." She sighs and settles forward, resting her chin on her hand.

"An entire town made from earth, worshipping earth… talk about self-proclaimed prophets."

"There’s one other matter-"

"I know. We picked up the readings an hour ago," Hill states bluntly.

"What does it mean?"

"What does it mean? It means Mother Earth just woke up pissed, on a major PMS ride. It means we're probably all screwed."
