The Authority #1 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Alkaline on Apr 28, 2007, 12:31am

Generation X #10
$2.99
Portrait of Authority

The world is divided into three countries that include the entire globe: Albion, Eurasia, and The United Kingdom. Albion is a totalitarian society led by The Authority, which censors everyone’s behavior, even their thoughts. Those disgusted with their oppressed lives often seek to join the fabled Loners, a supposed group of underground rebels intent on overthrowing the government…

Writer: Amanda Madison
Penciler: Pia Guerra

—-
Setting: A warehouse district along Chicago's Lake Michigan coast.

"The Authority proper is run by Col. Jennifer Marvel from a huge orbiting ship. President Nicolette Savard operates via the White House in 'France'. Our targets," and Bill Kaplan shifts the slide to show the exterior of the White House, "Would be most vulnerable in France first. From there, we can access the teleporters or transport units that allow access to the ship."

He slides his glasses up along his nose.

"That's fucking retarded, Bill," a man stands up, pointing his finger. "Have you seen that thing? It's fifty god-damn miles long. And like, thrity miles tall. It's a goddamn city in itself. You can't just waltz in there."

Bill Kaplan steadies himself on the podium. "Look, Robert, uh, Mr. Baldwin. We have ways. We have people inside."

The Authority, undercover, sit in on this "Loners" meeting, not drawing attention to themselves. They're amused, if anything. Of all the leads to get, of course this isn't the actual Loners organization, but information was information, and they weren't ones to question Col. Marvel's orders.

There was supposed to be a special guest here, tonight. And so, the Authority waits, like wolves in the hen house, waiting for their target.

It occurs to them that they might interact with the crowd, see what's what. Of note are:

Mr. Kaplan
Mr. Baldwin
Mr. Baldin's friend, a Dwayne Taylor
Christopher Bradley, the known terrorist, Bolt

Several various others in the crowd.

«Sieg Heil»

The fat man standing next to Dillon looks at the image induced figure in the eyes.

"Heh, yeah, it's about as safe. Still, I heard Iron Man was due here to tonight. Oh, sorry," and he extends a Cheetoh laced hand.

"I'm Zachary Smith."

I hate these image inducers.

Even if we are undercover - and given the variety of powers, that's not likely to last long - it just feels…degrading somehow. As I walk through the crowd, my skin a dark caramel instead of a bright red, I feel disgusted that I have to hide from these people.

But a plan is a plan.

I make my way towards the nearest target for some intel: Bolt. "Excuse me…Mr. Bradley?" I giggle, part of my character. Really. "Can we talk for a second?"

Bolt, going so far as to be wearing his costume, looks at Wildfire.

"Yeah, sure, cutie. You lookin' for protection or something?"

Dwayne Taylor looks at Nate, snorts harshly. "Honor nothing, I'm sitting here listening to a bunch of bullshit. Only thing that brings us here is hatred. Why I don't eat a bullet for breakfast instead of suffering through this shit is beyond me."

Bill Kaplan lights up at Joe's question.

"Oh, it's very simple. We've enlisted the aid of Stark-technology. Those suits used to be able to take down the Hulk, and…well, he can explain when he gets here. We're all very excited."

—-

Bolt puts an arm around Wildfire. "Babe, you don't just bust heads. You keep things simple. Incite a riot here, steal medical supplies there. Hell, that blackout along the Brazilian seaboard? That was me. Cost those fucks more than money, cost them trust. You whittle at it."

—-

Dwayne looks offended. "Offer? Authority? Hell no."

Heads turn.

"I don't want nothin' to do with any of this, I had my costume days, but not for this. There are rules, man, and they trashed these rules. Right out the Window. You only help people who wanna be helped, don't do any good to just come in and throw your weight around."

He looks upset.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Alkaline on Apr 28, 2007, 1:22am

And it's at precisely that moment there's a low whining from above, like a distant jet turbine. From a skylight in the warehouse ceiling, a lone figure drops in.

Black Sabbath's Iron Man's opening riff emanates from the figure, and stops when he pauses on the front stage.

"Ladies and Gentleman, your savior has arrived! Ladies, autographs are after the show. Let's work on liberation, first."

Bad. Come on. You used to be King. No matter what Jenny did to you, you still can handle this.

"I apologize. Between the rumors of Doom resurfacing, and another kid using the Night Thrasher name, it gets hard to tell who our friends are. Remember that time we fought Steel Force together back in your New Warrior days?"

Was that even on this Earth? Bah.

It takes every ounce of restraint that Joe has not to roll his eyes at this wannabe rockstar. But he remembers that he's got some nasty tech, and that helps.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority

Bolt squeezes Wildfire. "Duty calls." He slips her a phone number, and zaps on stage, next to Iron Man.

The notable Names from the crowd join him on stage. Dwayne smirks at Nate as he turns to the stage. "Heh, Night Thrasher isn't out of the loop yet."

The first thing to notice about Iron Man is he isn't the Iron Man of old.

He's pieced together from old Iron Man, War Machine, Stealth Iron Man, and Hulk/Thor-Buster parts. Certainly not the well oiled machine Tony Stark or the Power kids ran.

"Ladies and Gentleman, we are here tonight to introduce some of your newest hopes, as the Loners grow stronger. And rest assured, Tony Stark supports you fully."

I either just did something very bad, or very good.

He looks on stage remembering Iron Doom with a shiver. Then walks over to Wildfire giving her a nudge,"Susan, do you think it's time for your medicine?"

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Alkaline on Apr 28, 2007, 1:35am

Iron Man waves his hand dismissively.

"Of course not. We'd be stupid to do that. I'd be good for it, but not We."

Dramatically spreading his arms, his voice booms across the crowd.

"As you know, the Loners are a world-wide freedom fighting network. And we're proud to finally establish ourselves in Chicago, in what used to be the great state of Illinois in the once proud US. We aim to return to those days, and we owe these folks a hand:

Night Thrasher, Microbe, Speedball, all heroes returning to the good fight. Coupled with reknowned Loner sympathizer Bolt…"

Bolt shakes his head. "Maverick."

Iron Man sighs. "…Maverick, we trust the Midwest will be ready and able when the time comes."

He looks into the crowd.

"Sadly, the first order of business will be to unmask the secret police with us tonight."

Why is Nate attracting attention?

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Alkaline on Apr 28, 2007, 1:41am

The crowd gasps, and jostles each other, and several people make hastened exits, but aren't stopped.

Iron Man radiates cockiness, standing with his new soldiers on stage.

"Oh, yes. Bo…Maverick, if you would do the honors."

And it's then that Wildfire's image inducer is winked out, and Maverick electro-magnetically forces her to the floor.

"About time our mousetraps worked," he winks at her.

Oh, well. It had promise.

"You are all under arrest for terrorist activities. Surrender now - right now - and you'll be given a fair trial and sentence. Resist arrest, and you'll be met with extreme consequences. I will not make this offer again."

I don't even have to tell the others to get ready. Know they are. This is mostly to scare those in the audience who were weak about this, and maintain some dignity on the floor.

Microbe grins. "Ha. I've had you coated with Bacillus anthracis since I took the stage. I doubt you'd be able to stave off Anthrax. And that goes for all of you!"

Night Thrasher activates his active camouflage, fading from sight.

Iron Man hovers impassively above Maverick.

"No, we'll give you one offer. Stand down, or we blow you sky high."

Power Level 15, percision beam.

"Seriously Dwayne, brotha to brotha, knock this shit out. Remember that time the Warriors teamed up with the New Mutants? You're good at what you do, we could use you."

I mean, I could use parts of you. For my experiments. As food for my experiments.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 28, 2007, 1:57am

I don't take aim at the ones on stage - doubt I could hurt them. Instead, I open fire into the raging cloud, shooting at the mass. Hopefully, it'll disturb Iron Man and his flunkies long enough for my team to blindside.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Alkaline on Apr 28, 2007, 2:04am

A curious thing happens.

The Authority's powers don't work quite as well as they intend, if at all.

Julian's gunshot ricochets off of some sort of force field, and Wild mows down several members of the crowd, much to Maverick's anger.

But Lisa's attempt at slowing blood is barely noticeable, and Microbe takes the blast from Warhead, staggering back.

"Huh," Iron man shrugs in a non-committal manner. "I guess the dampener field did work."

He raises a fist and some a blast of concussive heat slams into Lisa's chest, and another into Joe's leg.

Nathaniel, meanwhile, is gifted with a vision of Iron Man's back-up, though in what form, he can't tell. Just that there are more on the way.

Speedball tackles Dillon with a wave of balls, knocking him Thrasher's invisible spin kick.

"Yes," Speedball pants, "I'm totally glad for genetically specific dampeners. About time."

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Cheshire on Apr 28, 2007, 2:06am

Okay, so powers don't work as good…

Joe tumbles when the beam strikes his leg. He moves forward towards Microbe, and tries to plunge a thumb into his eye socket.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Sir Nathaniel/Fang on Apr 28, 2007, 2:07am

Comm:"MAXWELL! MOVE! WE GOT COMPANY IN BOUND!"

Nathaniel drops the disguise, shifts to demon, draws his sword, shifts the sword into a twisted broad sword, and rushes back to the stage area.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Marcus/Darya/Joshua/Ghost on Apr 28, 2007, 2:09am

Julian aims his gun at microbe now.

Power level 5, normal sized.

He fires another repulsor blast at Microbe, not enough to kill him, but it should knock him several feet away and hurt him pretty badly. He also placed his own forcefield up in front of his team mates, no need for another repulsor beam.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Nephy "Lifebeat" Nephrahim on Apr 28, 2007, 2:09am

Shit.

I throw up a barrier at the blast, hoping I can at least block this. Just in case I make sure my natual resistance is as high as I can. After I'll try the old fashoined way, and impale the microbe guy with a spike that fires out of my barrier.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 28, 2007, 2:09am

"Julian, I want you on Speedball; anticipate his moves, bring him down. Lisa, Iron Man's yours - he's still flesh under there. Take him apart. Dillon, keep Bolt busy until we can clean out the mess." I open fire at Microbe with two pistols - doubt germs can protect him from bullets.

Ow. Fine. I'll go after Bolt.

"Feel like surrendering?"

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Marcus/Darya/Joshua/Ghost on Apr 28, 2007, 2:12am

After firing the shot at Microbe, Julian watches speed ball, reading his body, anticipating where he'll go. Without his powers working at maximum it's a little but harder, but he had experience. Unfortunately his abilities allow him to shrug off concussive effects.

Level 17.

He fired it at where Speedball's legs should be, the heat should dismember it.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority
Post by Alkaline on Apr 28, 2007, 2:19am

Years later, and Wild still hasn't gotten her Gen X compatriots into a well-greased fighting machine. It probably infuriates her.

As Joe drives his thumb into Microbe's eye, Julian's blast knocks the two of them into the quickly dispersing crowd.

Lisa avoids the heat blast, and he spike slams into Microbe, sputtering blood everywhere.

Microbe falls, dead, but everyone is now infected by the bacterium. Hello, anthrax.

At least Microbe was too stupid to know Wildfire's natural heat killed off such attacks. Shame about everyone else.

Maverick/Bolt shrugs at Dillon. "Not really. Feel like coney stew?" He surges a huge wave of electricity into him.

Speedball's legs shear off, and he falls to the ground.

Bill Kaplan stands petrified behind his podium.

"DontworrybroIgotthis," a voice hisses and Wild finds herself hurled through the ceiling by a gale force punch.

Maxwell recognizes Speed, of the true Loners.

Iron Man still sits impassively as Microbe and Speedball die. "Can't make an omelette," he mutters, before piledriving Joe into a wall.

I don't scream, I don't curse, I don't do anything as Bolt attacks me. I've taken worse hits from better adversaries. I'm not going to die here in the future. I'm going to get back home and make sure things turn out differently.

While my powers in this body are funky I can still beat this loser. It takes a fancy bit of time-travelling/teleportation (which is difficult due to my body being flash-fried) but hopefully I can appear behind this loser, completely out of the path of his attack.

Joe's blast feeds into Iron Man's shield. "Gee, thanks. Figure I wouldn't have accommodated for that, genius and all. Here, take it back."

He slams Joe with another concussive heat blast, driving him through the wall.

Dillon successfully dodges behind Maverick.

Lisa's attempts at removing the virus are interrupted when Speed darts through, throwing her in the path of Julian's wave attack.

Speed then circles around, tornadoing around Julian, whirling him up into a giant gloved red hand.

Stature looks down on Julian, shrugs, and flicks him into Lake Michigan. "Well, Savard didn't even bother to send her A-Listers."

With Stature and Speed on the scene, official Loners activity has been confirmed.

Iron Man extends his dampening aura to cover the warehouse.

"I just want to thank you all for making sure my theories were correct," he gloats, hovering over Microbe's corpse.

"And now, I wonder how you'll do against this…"

He taps his arm console, and the civilians left in the warehouse, or in the vicinity, begin to groan and cry…then their skin tears, bodies reform…

Iron Man and Joe are already out of range of Wild's EMP.

Muse's wave of energy knocks Iron Man out of the sky, and into Lake Michigan.

The Authority will hate Muse for two reasons:

Iron Man is now dragging Joe beneath the waves. And Dan was just knocked into the water.

Re: Gen X # 10 - Portrait of Authority

And then there's the fact that there's about forty Nimrod Sentinels bearing down.

Wildfire remembers when they finally had access to Black Air's insidious plan years ago:

Prime Sentinels are equipped with several technological superpowers: flight, superstrength, and force-blasts. As well as this, they have the ability to dampen or disrupt the powers of mutants around them. They have combat computers, which allow them to compensate for surprising events (say, the arrival of police cars) faster than normal humans. Finally, their programming may use the natural personality of the host to lull unsuspecting targets into conversation, at which point they dampen their powers and kill them.

They can inject anyone with nanomachines that will turn the target into a Prime Sentinel.

I can't jump in after Joe - these arms make it impossible to swim. That leaves me with the Prime Sentinels. Still active, and a major threat.

"All right, all right…" I run back into the horde, holding an EMP grenade secure in my jacket and firing off with the SMG. My aim is to get their attention, drag as many as I can as close to me as possible, then detonate the EMP…Nephy could help get the nanites out of their system, but she's indisposed at the moment. With any luck, the other will have enough time to say Joe and get the dampener from Iron Man.

The Demon's glancing blows knock Iron Man's faceplate off.

If he was at all conscious enough to recognize the man, he'd know Chase Stein died 6 years ago.

Iron Chase pauses his acceleration, injecting the Demon with sedative nanites, cloaking them in active camouflage as he does so.

—-

The Nimrods are blown apart by Julian's attack, but as with Meisha, the innermost ones are adapted to the assault.

Ignoring the chilled Wildfire, one of the three remaining Nimrods grabs Julian by the base of the neck, and twists.

Just enough to keep him alive. Pariah might have just enough tech to allow him to move again.

My arm! Oh my god, my arm!

Khuda mera basu nikle geyahe ohmygodmyarmwhatamIgoingtodomyarmmyarmmyarm!

I scream as the arm rips clean off of my torso, a splatter of blood arching through the air as I drop to the floor with a loud scream. Waves of the same cold that hit me in the last few days rush through me over and over again, and suddenly I can’t breathe.

Only it’s different this time… I recognise this. I’m in shock. I’m in shock, but for some reason, I can still think clearly. I’m in shock. I can’t move at all.

With bitter irony, I remember something I thought to myself when sparring with Bell just the other day. ‘Ever heard of the expression ‘choose your battles wisely’? No? How about ‘oh god, my arm, my arm, it doesn’t twist that way!’?’

I knew I would become somewhat familiar with the latter…

Oh, god, my arm…

Didn't I say I stopped listening to you? Just bug off already.

"Haa… You won't die. I'm keeping control of your blood, your brain is completely fine. You will wake up."

"…So let's see. Half of us are totaled, Dhillon's a nervous wreck, and ex-sir Nathaniel is gone. Not our best showing."

"Well at least none of us died."

He puts his helmet back on. Water drips out of the bottom.

"Dammit."

"Believe it or not, I take this as a good sign. Back in the old days, it seemed like the worse we lost the battle, the better we won the war. Just give it time, like I said."

"That's true."

We had to kill everyone else though. I hate martyrs.

He turns to Wildfire.

"Don't mind me, I'm just talking alot because I can't do much else. But I'll take your word on that."

I nod in response, and close my eyes. The blood loss, delirium, dizziness and fatigue are enough to ensure that I fall away from consciousness quickly enough.

Unfortunately, fields of snow decorated by trails of blood running through it with the deep red contrasting with the perfect white of the snow and soaking into it, patterning it morbidly, isn’t the most pleasant thing to dream about.

Especially with a flames dancing over a majestic bird as it looms above, judging everything below.

Still, there are worse things to dream about, and I know it.

«WiFi likes to die whenever the people next door hold keggers.

Anyway, yeah, the mission is pretty much accomplished.. I must say GMing ZOMGDie powers is tough, so the threats didn't…last as long.

Although now the future Nimrods are Nephy proofed, so nyah.

Anyway, mission accomplished, except for Iron Man kidnapping Nathaniel. I'll cover that in Socials.

Just a few things of note:

This arc is the tail end of their ten year rule, and it's the first time in a few years they've actually been challenged. So Project Nimrod (ie Zero Tolerance) being activated across the Midwest is a huge blow for them, physically and politically.

It also raises questions, since that's something from Gen X's first mission…

It's setting the tone for the actual threats down the line. You'll note you only faced the C-List Loners.

That's all my Director's Commentary.»
