Cover Description: Kidd curled up in a fetal position

The doors flew open, as if affected by unseen hands. Kidd walked through them proudly, as if she owned the place, and looked the receptionist right in the eye. Clearly unimpressed, the receptionist rolled her eyes, putting a hand on the phone she was talking down so that the person on the other end.

“Yeah, no introductions, there’s no need – he’s unoccupied. Go on in.”

With a scowl, Kidd walked on through into the psychologist’s office.

“I don't need to be here, you know." Kidd growled as she strolled into the doctor's office and plopped herself down on his couch, laying across it as if she was in the Wreck room.

Nodding, he replied. “Alright, well… I’m Doctor Kraft. The more prestigious Doctor Spooner couldn’t be here today.”
I wonder why he refused to see the girl.
“Why don’t you tell me why you did come here, then. If there’s nothig wrong, then why?”

"According to some people I've got anger problems. I'm just here to prove them wrong."

Dr. Kraft looked at her questioningly. “Who thinks you have anger problems?”

"Kelly. Stupid, Kelly." Kidd looked away from Doctor Kraft and out the window for a bit. "I'm Kidd by the way."

“Ah,” he nodded knowingly. “I’m assuming you’re coming from the Xavier Mansion.”

"The one and only."

He pushed his glasses back up his nose before responding. “Well, the use of a derogatory term to describe Kelly indicates that there may be some anger there. For example and in contrast, do you want to know how she described you when she came to see me?”

"Are you even allowed to tell me that?"

He looked at her down his glasses. “Well, normally I wouldn’t, but when I discussed the doctor/patient confidentiality with her the first time we met, she dismissed it almost immediately. Otherwise I wouldn’t even be allowed to tell you she came to see me.”

She shrugged and looked back at the doctor. "Alrighty, but don't you dare tell her what I say."

“Don’t worry. I can’t.” He pulled out some notes from a folder marked NS, and read from them. ‘"Kidd… she's almost like that pesky little sister. She's my best friend, but she always seems to feel the need to prove something."’

"Awww, I'm like a sister to her? That's sweet," she pretended to not hear the rest.

“Mm.” He nodded, a finger to his forehead. “She seems to feel a connection to you so comforting it’s on a familial level, and she was concerned about you. Did you pick up any derogatory term?”

"Hmmm?" she asked, getting distracted by a plaque on his wall. "I guess, she said I was pesky. She's wrong though."

He rubbed his temple with his finger. “Are you sure? I mean – the general difference in the introduction of the other show your respective general inclinations. Can you honestly say that you haven’t given her a single reason to believe that?”

"First of all, I don't know what the first thing you said means, secondly…none that I can recall."

“It means that the way you spoke about each other says very different things about you as individuals. And are you sure? Maybe you should take a moment to think about it.”

She sat back and pondered it for a moment. "Okay, I can see where she might have gotten that, but I'm just looking out for her most of the time."

Taking his finger away from his temple, he rested his hand on his table. “Why don’t you tell me about it? Why she might have had that idea, that is. Maybe a third person’s perspective could help.”

"Well, our last fight started because I accepted a date from some cute new guy at the school, while earlier, I was flirting with some other guy. Kelly's such a puritan, all I did was wink."

“That seems like rather restrictive behaviour on her part, especially for someone who doesn’t share such views. And this is why she believes you have anger issues? I can see you thinking her belief is rather unfounded if it is.”

"Oh, no." Kidd blushes. "She thinks I have anger issues because I sorta always drift towards violence to solve problems…but I mean, with powers like mine, it's hard to not want to use force…oh, she also thinks I have power issues."

“Hm. Tell me about your powers.”

"I manipulate energy." she gave him the usual laundry list of what she could do with her abilities. Having said it so many times, it rolled off her tongue.

”Interesting,” he replied, pausing thoughtfully. “Tell me about their non-violent applications.”

"X-ray and infra-red vision. The energy constructs could also be used non-violently, same with magnetism."

He nodded. “You could easily use them to do for such things as, say… reversing the effects of anaphylactic shock, reconnecting nerves and therefore undoing paralysis in most cases or paralegy… Have you given much though to such things?”

Kidd stared at Doctor Kraft intently. "What the hell are you talking about?"

“Other uses for your powers. One’s you clearly haven’t given thought to.” He sighed, a little wearily. “So, I assume you haven’t thought about how to use them to help people in direct, non-violent manners.”

He was right. She hadn't, but one could hardly blame for that. She was a freshman in highschool who barely noticed her own nose much less extremely advanced medical techniques involving her abilities. "Well, I guess not."

He nodded and glanced at the tape recorder that was running. “Tell me about the powers of one of your friends.”

"…which and why?"

“Any. The first one that comes to mind. Just humour me."

"Zephyr. He's got wind powers."

"And typically, how does he use these powers. Does he resort to them when angered?”

I shrug. "Never seen him angry, but normally he just flies around and makes tornadoes and shit."

"Hm. Well… who's the first team-mate of yours that you've seen angered?”

"Nicolette seemed kind of angry that time I hit her." Time I hit her a bunch of times.

"And why did you hit her?"

"We were sparring."

“Ah.” He shook his head slighty, rubbing his forehead and the bridge of his nose. “I meant someone who got angry in a situation that wasn’t already predisposed to violence.”

"Sephula."

“Okay. What are his powers, how did he react, and what was his stimulus?”

"I don't know what his powers are (but he's really strong) and he sorta hit me. Twice. And his…stimu-whatever was me disagreeing with him."

“Hm…. is that the whole situation there?”

"Pretty much."

He looked at her as if he was disappointed in her for some reason. “In that case, I’d recommend him coming in at some point for a session also,” he sighed. “This is backfiring on me. It’s not putting across the point I wanted to. Any other occasions? With other people?”

"Nope, not really. Unless you want me to go over my fights with Kelly."

“You could do that. I mean, she’s the one who said you have anger issues, right?”

She scowls. "Yeah, but she's wrong. I was trying to protect her from a crazy girl, she didn't want my help, got all up in my face."

“Why don’t you elaborate on that a bit?”

"There was this girl, Addison. Dillan say she was crazy and Kelly decided she was going to talk to her but I decided to just got whoop her ass, well I didn't, but I said I would and Kelly took me seriously and that's when she got all in my face."

“What do you mean by that? How did she respond?”

"Told me to let her handle, told her I'd stop her from getting herself hurt by…well…hurting her."

He looked at her a little confused. "I'm sorry - I don't understand what you mean."

"I threatened her so that she wouldn't go visit Addison."

“Ah. And why did you do that?”

"So she wouldn't get hurt.”

“Hm. Do you think she requires protection?”

Kidd sighed. "YES! Thank you. Someone finally gets it. Kelly is so naive, and innocent, and stuff, people take advantage of her, or could, if they tried, it isn't right."

"And someone has tried to? Or are you just acting pre-emptively?"

“Just acting pre-emptively.”

“In that case, you have no reason to think someone might do take advantage of her, am I right?”

"Well…her boyfriend, her last boyfriend, he sorta took advantage of her."

He’d already heard this from Kelly, but he wanted to hear Kidd’s point of view. “Tell me about it.”

Well, she's probably already told you…" she stated, staring up at his ceiling. "…but he was a bastard. He manipulated her into staying at the Hellfire Club so that he could try and use her in some sort of sick coup. Then he slept with her best friend.”

Dr. Kraft actually looked surprised at this. “She told me about him cheating on her, but not about him manipulating her into staying. Would you like to elaborate on that?”

"Nothing more to elaborate on really."

“Well… how- okay, never mind. So, you find yourself angry with her because she hasn’t let this change the way she views people?”

"Exactly. She's all sunshine and buttercups."

"And this demeanour aggravates you?"

“Very much so.”

Pausing for a moment, he bit down on a pen he was holding, thinking. “Why is that? Do you think that may be because you have a more cynical view on life and find such optimism grating?”

"No!" Kidd yelled, defensively. "I don't have a cynical view on life…just all the people in it."

"What would the difference be? The people are what make life what it is."

Tears began to form in Kidd's eyes. "Does it even matter? I just don't like people."

The doctor stopped, pulling the pen out of his mouth. “Would you like to stop here? Or maybe to take a break to compose yourself?” he asked sympathetically.

"No. No. It's fine. Really."

“If you’re sure…” he continued. “Why don’t you like ‘people’?”

She shuffled herself around on the couch so that her knees were touching her chin. "Because one of them decided that I wasn't one. A person I mean."

“Oh?" he asked, vaguely reactionary. "Elaborate, if you would.”

“My…my teacher, back home. He tried to…" Kidd looked away from the doctor. "…he tried to do stuff to me. He didn't get very far, but it was far enough.”

“Ah. I understand.” He paused. “Did this… make you question yourself?”

"I didn't have time for that." she laughed through the tears. "My powers manifested and I whooped his butt and got him locked up. After that I became a hero. I spent all my time solving everyone else's problems."

“Hm. Do you want me to tell you what I think this need to protect her is about? I can tell you one thing, it certainly isn’t about her attitude.”

Her eyes drifted away from the doctor but she nodded.

“It’s a form of transferrence. You had one point in your life where you felt weak and helpless, and as soon as your powers developed, you decided that you would never allow anyone to let you feel that way again. That’s why you are so quick to move to violence to settle a dispute. And you are also compensating for the fact that no-one was able to protect you and you weren’t able to protect yourself from this teacher of yours, by trying to protect this girl whenever you can from anything and everything.” He looked at her again. “Do you understand? What do you think?”

"I get it." her gaze was still averted from that of Doctor Kraft. "…but is it really so wrong?"

“Not necessarily, but it indicates that you’re using it to avoid addressing these issues. And it came to a point where both of these issues conjoined – in the argument you described to me. You were in a situation where you were trying to protect her, and yet the attempt to protect became a hurdle involved in a dispute itself, and you found yourself helpless to protect – and your issues crossed. This resulted in you trying to use violence against her to protect her. Can you see how this happened? And how that last effort really does not work?”

"Too clearly." she replied.

The doctor smiled, glad with the direction the session was going in. “You’ve made a lot of progress, and very quickly, especially considering the issues we’re dealing with here. One last thing before our time runs out – and this is the note we’ll pick up on next time. How did that dispute end?”

"We fought a little and didn't talk to one another for a week."

"Both. Pretty sure I won both rounds."

“Hm. This physical nature of the fight… was it reciprocated?” Odd. The girl’s lying, the doctor thought.

"Kind of."

“Kind of?”

Kidd stood up from her seat. "Kelly can look threatening but when it comes down it, she doesn't want to fight. Ever.”

“That doesn’t really answer the question. Was it reciprocated?”

“Yeah.”

"Yes? So she reacted violently also. Well, that sort of goes against that claim you just made."

"Sue me. I've got a bad memory."

“Hm. That’s odd. It also goes against my own character profile of the girl,” he mused thoughtfully.

Kidd raised an eyebrow but ignored the comment. "Well, I've got to go. Thanks for this doc."

He snapped back to attention, focusing on Kidd again. “Yes, well, you’ve made excellent progress. You should be proud of that.”

"Thank you, I guess."

As Kidd left, he turned off his tape recorder.

Interesting. She wove so many lies into truths. I'll just leave this for Spooner as he asked he thought with a sigh, leaving the tape on Dr. Spooner's desk.
