[[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 9:09am

[[Despite the suggestions of the team, none of the Shi'ar seem to know how to treat Nova. None of their tools can even pierce her skin to get any readings or provide any medicines. Nova passes away. The D'bari have all been relocated to another planet in the Border in a joint effort between the Kree and the Shi'ar.

There were some tense moments, but Genis kept the Kree in check, and there were no major incidents. All in all, there were no fatalities other than Nova, and just a few bumps and bruises, and assorting other small medical issues that weren't serious. Long range monitoring showed that Galactus was allowed to feed, and soon after, he was gone.

The team's energy surge has pretty much completely faded away at this time. Despite this, Ghost still has an energy form. It really doesn't seem to have any powers and isn't even really tangible, alothough if someone tries to touch it, they do feel a slight tingle of energy.]]

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]

My first thoughts are to turn to Ghost - find her, find out… what… what she is now. What she wants to do. Even with what just happens, that’s the most important thing.

But when I turn around to look for her, I can’t see her. She’s not going to make a habit of that, is she? Despite Nova, I can’t help but smile to myself at that. I think it’s what Ghost wanted… a body.

Wow. Talk about a pyrrhic victory. We saved the people, sure. But Nova died to save them. At least she went out nobly.

God, I’m not actually going to use that, am I? Try to justify it like that? ‘She died nobly’. It’s actually worse than ‘she died doing what she loved’. She saved us all, damn it. She saved us, saved them, and despite it all, we couldn’t do a damn thing.

I shouldn’t have called her a douche.

With a sigh, I take off from the room to see how Lila’s doing.

A door being left SLIGHTLY ajar… usually not too good a sign. Then again, it’s not exactly slightly ajar, as much as it’s wide open. And at least I don’t think I’ll be seeing any hermits or wild men hopping out – not in space at least. And there aren’t any hens wandering about, following false directions.

I walk into my room, having come to the conclusion that I have way too many thoughts.

"Hey…."

"KNOCK FIRST!" Lila lunges for the bed and wraps a sheet around her naked body. Damien saw that her body was still burned pretty badly.

Okay, eyes shut, eyes shut!

"Whoops! Sorry. Um… there was nothing to knock on – the door was wide open. If you want, I could go back, close the door and try again…"

Eyes still shut, I walk out of the room backwards with a hand reaching to my side to feel for the door, and I close it when I get out of the room. I knock on the now closed door.

Lila says, "Come on in!"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Meisha "Muse" Aisha on Jul 20, 2007, 9:43am

I push the door open and walk back in… my knee bumping into something hard and a little metallic because I’ve still got my eyes shut.

"Sorry about that! Um… I can open my eyes now, right?"

"Sure!"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]

I open my eyes again, and… I don’t really see anything at knee height. Great… so I’m bumping into phantom knee height cabinets now? Yay.

"How’re you managing?"

Hm. Burns all over the body, blasted away by the Captain Marvel wannabe. How are you managing? Yeah… idiot.

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 9:51am

Lila had wrapped her sheet around her into a makeshift sari. She's completely covered…and actually semi-fashionable, "Not great. Had to cancel my next three shows. I had been trying to get booked at Milliways for ten months now, and I had to cancel on them last minute. They got Allison to fill in, but it's just not the same…"

"That… that’s really terrible. Don’t they know disco’s dead? I mean, come on!"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 9:57am

Lila makes a annoyed little sound, "She hasn't done disco in years. Mostly rock and adult comtemporary. We play together all the time actually! And she's a good friend for filling in on short notice!"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Risk on Jul 20, 2007, 9:59am

I shake my head with a slight smile.

"You need to get your ‘facetious-metre’ checked out. It isn’t working right. Now, you want to tell me about how you’re doing in relation to what’s important, this time? And I’ll give you a clue, it’s not a show."

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 10:02am

Lila makes the sound again, "Says you! I have a new album coming out in a month. In this business, you aren't preforming, you might as well put them right on the discount rack next to a Milli Vanilli reunion album! This ain't the first time I've been messed up from a bad jump, and it probably won't be the last!"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Risk on Jul 20, 2007, 10:06am

"Yeah, says me. Sure, you might not get this album up and running as quickly as you might want. You might have to delay the promotional tour. You might have to re-release the album (mind you, that’d get you more money in the long run, because you just know that once the re-release is doing well, you’ll get people wanting the original too) but what’s important right now is how you’re actually feeling. That wannabe you got nailed by is freakishly powerful."

I drop my head slightly with a sigh.

"I saw the burns."

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 10:17am

Lila frowns, "Wow…I knew I was getting a little saggy, but the burns are what catches attention when I'm naked?"

Lila shrugs, "The concern is sweet, it really is. But, I know what I signed up for." Lila points to a nice boquet of flowers on her dresser, "And Captain Marvel even sent me a nice card to apologize! This isn't the X-Mansion, kiddo. Out here, people tend to get blown up and burned a lot."

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Risk on Jul 20, 2007, 10:24am

"How thoughtful of him," I comment, looking at the flowers. I stop glaring at them when I realise that my glare won’t make them shrivel up.

"Yeah, it’s definitely not like the mansion. Huh. I spent a couple of months at the mansion, as opposed to my near year working on my own, and I’m already too used to that. Shouldn’t be the case. We lost someone today," I sigh.

Lila says, "I thought you said you lost someone. Last I checked, Galactus and heralds are the bad guys. Yeah, yeah, I know cosmic force, does what they have too, blah, blah, blah. I just see it as the guy eats planets and kills a lot of people."

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Risk on Jul 20, 2007, 10:35am

"That’s not what it was like," I scowl. "Galactus pretty much killed her. She died because she betrayed him to protect us and save the people on the planet."

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 10:40am

"Okay, note to self: Galactus has a miserable severance package," Lila's expression softens, "I'm sorry. This seems to be bothering you pretty badly. Just like me, it sounds like she made her own choice. It's terrible that she had to die, but it's rare that we get to pick when and how we go…"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Risk on Jul 20, 2007, 10:42am

Lila says, "That's the problem with having causes! Much better to just let life take you where it takes you. Thief, rock star, bounty hunter, intergalactic taxi service. Sure, you might get killed, but hey, at least you get to have fun doing it!"

I tilt my head to one side with a frown.

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]

I take my head out of the tilt – mostly because it was starting to tilt too much, and, well… I like my neck the way it is.

"I… why, what’s yours?"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by watcher on Jul 20, 2007, 11:01am

Lila says, "Give me two minutes and I'll show you!" She ducks into the bathroom. A few minutes later, she has added a belt and boots to her sheet sari, and had tied her hair back in a ponytail. "Ready?"

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Risk on Jul 20, 2007, 11:07am

I look at her, and then glance back down at myself. I look like a mix between something out of a superhero movie, and an underground superpowered fight club, and she looks like… well, let’s just say I feel even more out of place all of a sudden, still dressed in all of my mission gear.

"As I’ll be, I guess, but ready for what exactly, I’m not really sure," I respond with a wry grin.

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]

Beginning to feel more and more like this is a massive prank. Or that I've walked into a Green Lantern comic. I take a step back - entirely to get away from the breath. I'm not stupid enough to comment on it. I think I have some mints in my pocket, though….

"You know, how about you let me through, and I'll get back to you on that. Or… I can probably hook you up with some Scooby Snacks. Who doesn't love Scooby Snacks."

Right, Damien. Running off at the mouth? Bad idea. Please don't let him know what a Scooby Snack is….

Post by Meisha "Muse" Aisha on Jul 22, 2007, 8:09pm

That calls for a raised eyebrow, I think, but I’m probably safest not saying anything. I pick up the menu too, and change the topic.

"Are you a vegetarian? Maybe it doesn’t matter. I don’t know what most of this stuff is, anyway. You’d be surprised at who’s a vegetarian, actually. Well, who was, rather. Ask for a list of famous vegetarians, and it’s probably the only time you could get the names ‘Mahatma Ghandi’ and ‘Adolf Hitler’ called one after the other like that. Hm… well, maybe in a quiz, or a really weird horse race… ‘come on, horse Hitler!’

"That’d be a weird thing to call out, wouldn’t it? You just get a dirty look from the couple sitting in front of you…. A bit of a conflict, isn’t it? Vegetarianism, good. Nice for the animals, they stay happy, animal rights activists are too, and you get that general ripple of satisfaction as a result. Hitler? Very bad. There’s just this warning label that comes along with the tag of ‘Vegetarian’; ‘warning. In extreme cases, may lead to genocide.’

"Huh. That was in bad taste. Sixty years isn’t enough. I’m a vegetarian, actually. I’m not strict, though. I eat fish. And duck. I mean, they spend half their time semi-submerged; they’re practically fish. And sheep, chickens, turkeys, cows, anything that lives near water, really, so whatever’s on the list probably isn’t a problem.

Just a ‘note to self’; ramble less."

[For the record, I wasn't having him actually know, just rambling and then saying whatever pops into head like he tends to ::).

A side note; I should really stop watching Bill Bailey. Damn him for bringing up the black exploitation dolphins… I can't get them out of my head now.

"How could you do that, man? How could you work for the man, man?"

"I'm doing it for my kids, man! I'm doing it for the fish for my kids!"

"How could you do it, man?"

"Just don't be dissing me, man!"

There are just some times that you need that man to shut up….]

She’d been… well, I suppose ‘living in my head’ is the best way to put it, but that’s not quite what it was. And she could jump anywhere she wanted.

"She decided to take up residence in my head a little while ago, just before I had an accident. She used to be a normal girl, until she died. Now she’s a living thought. Or she was. I’m not really sure what she is now…. She went into Nova’s head and convinced her to help. Before Nova died, she give her some kind of… body. It’s energy, more like a… shell, maybe? I’m not sure. "Obviously not an indy movie buff." Lila says with slight disappointment, "Let me see…I was born in England, though I haven't been back there since my powers first showed up. I spend most of my time in my own personal Fortress of Solitude….it's actually a Dyson Sphere that I won in a high stakes game of Strip Rummy. Pretty sure it was something my slavers had put in my head…Thankfully, Xavier and the New Mutants…the REAL New Mutants, no offense, helped me get past all of that."

I'm not dense enough to comment on how long she took. I'm a little tempted, but… no.

"Perfect," I smile, before pushing the button.

"Come on, get in!"

The elevator trip takes a surprisingly long time, but eventually it comes to a halt. When the doors open, Lila's greeted by what looks like some sort of upscale cavern - which is an odd enough thought as it is. The floor is all padded out and fitted with services - drinks, a bar on the side, and seating around the centre, which is clearly where the fights occur. A barrier separates the spectator area from it, and the floor there isn't padded - rather, it's plated with what looks like marble, but clearly isn't, and a cage surrounds it.

"Since tonight’s not one of the tournaments, it’s just going to be who’s name comes up when. I’m already in the books, just not for tonight’s. But anyone who’s betting is going to be pretty pissed – the odds set on me have changed quite a lot since I lost some of my powers. I suppose I should say something…" I grin.

"Come on, let’s get you signed up, and get my name on tonight’s list." I walk over to the bar, expecting her to come too.

I stifle a laugh, leaning forwards to whisper;

"You know, it depends on how many people they have, but they might tier you. You might also want to give a fake name – they might recognise yours. And I’ve been to too many places to remember which ones, but reality manipulation is against the rules in some."

Apparently not this one. The guy matches her scowl and writes her name down, not recognising it in the least.

"Ouch. Thomas Henley. I should be in the books already."

He flicks through a large black book next to the fight list and finds the name, before jotting it down on the list.

"… and give me the Cain gear you have behind you there."

He raises an eyebrow at that, but doesn’t ask about anything but the money for the gear. When he gets it, he passes the gear over to me.

"I’ll be back in a moment, just… find a seat that looks like it could resemble comfortable."

I head to the back and come back a few minutes later.

Re: [[Post Mission 16 - Funeral for an…Enemy?]]
Post by Meisha "Muse" Aisha on Aug 1, 2007, 8:26am

I glance up at the screen and- oh, joy of joys, the other picture is of a guy with flaming hands brought defensively across his chest. That should be a fun fight, definitely. I'm suddenly a lot more grateful that my uniform's close to being flameproof.

"Alright, wish me luck. Looks like I might need it…."

I roll my mask down and walk into the fight area, just as the cage comes down. Great. Limited mobility. And I don't really recognise the other guy. Must be new.

I take a step forwards and extend my hand to shake his before the fight… and I get an uppercut for the effort. Damn near puts me through the room of the cage. I slam back down into the ground - hard. It's a little surprising nothing breaks.

Great… so this guy has hands that are on fire, he's way stronger than me, and he likes to fight cheap. This should be fun.

I don't really have any problems with fighting cheap either. I feel like I can barely move when he brings his foot down on my head to stomp on it - of course, the iminent breaking of bones forces me to. I catch his foot and roll, spinning him in the air and bringing him crashing down. I spring up onto my feet, and take advantage of his position by stomping down on his groin. Hard.

Like I said, I don't have any problems with fighting cheap. And he's not getting back up from that. Guess he didn't have much durability to go with his strength… then again, most guys wouldn't get up from that. Cheapness can win fights, too. Of course, the crowd isn't too pleased with how quickly the fight ended.

The cage rises again, and I stumble out, back over to Lila, coughing a little profusely.

"There you go. That was quicker than I thought," I get out between coughs, feeling something grate a little in my chest. Maybe he did break something.

"Always!" Lila makes her way down to the arena. Her glances down and realizes that her bandages are visible. "Hmm…might be a problem. Hey, big guy!" She waves to a large bruting guy wearing a trenchcoat.

The guy looks at her slowly. His neck makes a sound like rocks scraping together, "WHAT?"

"It's a little cold in here, let me borrow your jacket."

The guy turns a odd purple color, "Uhm…I'm not wearing anything under it!"

Lila says, "Oh…" She bats her eyes at him, "I was really looking for some help…you're gonna turn down a poor defenseless woman like that."

The guy gets even more purple and hands over his jacket. Lila gives him a kiss on the cheek and wraps the jacket around her, "Thanks, fella. You're all right!"

Lila heads down to the arena. When the name Lila Cheney is announced everyone sits up and pays attention. Damien hears someone at a nearby table say, "What the hell happened to her hair?"

Lila's opponent is a large female wearing spiked armor. Lila looks at her and sighes inwardly. A crackle of energy appears between the female's hands and a lightning bolt rips across the arena, just missing an already in motion Lila Cheney. Lila sighes and says beneath her breath, "Always need to be a showoff, don't you, Lila. It's amazing you haven't gotten yourself killed."

Lila continues to dodge around the room slowly getting herself closer to the woman. Lila keeps glancing down at her watch. Lila ducks another energy blast and sweeps the woman's legs out from under her. Lila jumps into the air and comes down with both feet on the woman's chest, knocking the wind out of her. And also effectively pinning her to the ground by the spikes in her armor. The woman tries to pull herself free, but Lila drops to her knees and labds two sharp punches to her throat. The match is called.

Lila takes a bow. Damien notices the match took exactly 5 minutes, 10 seconds.

"That might be best. I think, so long as he’s not as fast as the last guy, and decides that he won’t break my bones right away, I can draw it out, though."

I pull the mask back down and head back in for the fight. Truth be told, I think the guy in charge of the line up does actually have a grudge against me. I wasn’t just kidding back there.

I’m not going to try and shake the guy’s hand again – I learned from that last time. … Which makes me feel like a jerk when this guy extends his hand to shake mine. I take it, shake it… and get kicked in the midsection. Yay for trying to be a good sportsman.

This guy isn’t as fast as the last, though… and falls considerably short when compared to my speed. He goes to punch my jaw and I sidestep it, smashing his face into the cage at the side.

He staggers back, stunned, but I’m not gullible. He’s trying to make himself come off worse than he actually is. Get me in arm’s reach. Not going to happen. I sweep down and take his legs out from underneath him.

That’s when he does show some speed – a surprising amount. He twists in the air just before he lands, and launches me back with his feet. I smash up into the steel ceiling of the cage, for the second time tonight. It hurts just as much as the last time, and by the time that I’m coming back down, he’s up already, and he doesn’t let me hit the floor. Picking me out of the air by the throat, he slams me into the cage wall.

I think he says something about giving up, but my ears are ringing too much to tell. I knee him in the chest, but he doesn’t even flinch. Still… his eyes. His eyes are uncovered, and they can’t be as hard as the rest of him. I drive my fingers into them and he staggers back, reeling from his new-found blindness. A kick to the back of the head drives it hard into the cage wall, and drops him.

I swagger back over to Lila, glancing briefly at the screen.

"Seven minutes, thirty-eight seconds," I tell her, wincing beneath the mask. "How’s that?"

"Had me worried for a few minutes there…" Lila pauses. "About losing the money, of course." She definitely is lying. After a few minutes of Lila trying to give him some small talk, Lila's second match is up. She smiles at him, "Be right back."

As she's heading down to the match, she touches her side gingerly and winces, "Dammit…" she says softly. "You're overdoing it, Lila….you should be resting…."

Her match starts. Her opponent looks a little like Lashina, even armed with a whip. Lila turns to the crowd and takes a deep bow. She turns back to Lashina, who snaps her whip sharply. "Come on, sweety! I'm not really into the whole S&M scene, but who am I to judge, right?"

Lashina cracks the whip at Lila, who dodges with a nice cartwheel, "Borrriinngg.." Lila says…and then stumbles slightly. Lashina takes quick advantage smacking the whip against Lila's chest. Lila makes a pained gasp. She tries to move, but is too slow as the whip cracks against her shoulder. Lila winces, "Come on!!! Get a little closer…FIGHT ME!!"

Lashina throws the whip down and charges. Lila jumps over Lashina, but Lashina is too quick for the obviously in pain Lila. She grabs a hold of Lila's leg and slams her hard to the ground. "GIVE UP!"

"NO!" Lila says, trying to throw her off.

Lashina drops a hard knee into the side of Lila's head. Lila spits out some blood, "You're going to have to kill me, bitch, because I will not give up." Lashina drops another knee into the side of her head. Lila is bleary, but still trying to sit up, "Try again…I dare you!" Lashina draws her leg back for another kick.

While I watch the match, I slowly move closer, taking my mask off. Not that I don’t trust Lila’s abilities, but… well, she’s moving slower and slower with every motion, and she’s getting sloppy in her movements. Eventually, I find myself right by the cage – pretty sure I’m not supposed to be this close.

When the whip hits her the second time, I get more than a little worried – she definitely should have been able to dodge that. I run my hand down the side of the cage door – everything has a weak point. It usually isn’t even that hard to find it, if you know how to look.

In the cases of doors, it’s even easier. The hinges are usually the best bet. A few looks over it confirm that, and a quick kick actually knocks the door off of the hinges, the metal creaking and tearing with an awful screech.

Lila’s taking too much of a beating to notice, and her opponent’s too much into the beating to notice.

When her opponent brings her foot back down for another kick, she finds it caught. By me, obviously. She turns her head to face me, and I look her in the eye, smiling.

"Hi, honey," I say to Lila’s opponent, smiling the most annoying smile I can manage.

The crowd starts booing loudly.

"Oh, shut up."

Lila looks up and says, "My hero…" well she tries too, it sounds like she was talking through marbles. Lila seems to be fading fast. Damien notices the energy field building up around her and him as she blacks out.

The next moment we’re back in Lila’s room. A little disorienting, yeah, but there’s an upside. There’s a bed to put her on so she can go to sleep, instead of a cold floor she can lie on while some Furies reject stomps her.

"Aw, shucks. And we didn’t even get our winnings."

I set her down on the bed and – wait here to check on her? No, probably not. I should probably leave her to just get some sleep instead, and check on her later.

"That was stupid, you know. You could have been hurt. You should have just quit…."

Damn it. She’s not going to listen, of course. I already know she’s like that. Still, it has to be said… if only to point out the obvious. And… I'm talking to myself, anyway. She's out of it.

I walk out of the door and close it with a click.

On the plus side, I get to look for a new fight club. That should be fun.
