New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 21, 2007, 2:35pm

Thursday…

Get your lasers ready…
Head out on the spaceways
Looking for adventure
And whatever comes your way!

The Shi'ar will make it happen,
Take your ship to a creepy place
Fire all of your guns at once and…
Explode things in space.

Like a true evil child,
They are Brood, Brood to be Wild
They fly so high,
They never want to diiiiie…

Brood to be Wiiiiild…

Better solicitation, ripping off Amy

New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Featuring the Imperial Guard Auxilliary #2 (Note New Super Long Title) - Brood to Be Wild
$2.99

The Brood. Alien parasites who have been the scourge of the Shi'ar Imperium, occasional adversaries of the X-Men, and all around creepy buggers. When communications from the Juber started getting spotty, a subspace anomaly was considered a possibility. Investigating, the crew finds an anomaly alright…the size of a whale. Everyone who's been waiting for lasers, your wait is officially over.

Writer: Mike "Havok3595" Weaver
Penciler: Teddy Kristiansen

The Juber…IN SPACE!!!

Oracle has called the Auxilliary to the bridge.

"As you know, we have had spotty communications issues. It has been difficult for us to transmit, ever since with left Kl'tu 3. We have traced this subspace fluctuation to this location…searching for an anomaly that was previously unmapped, hoping to set a marker for future scientific research."

Her back is to the viewscreen as she addresses the Auxilliary.

"Sometimes, these anomalies are visually interesting, but this just looks like empty space, which is unfortunate. I had hoped you would get a view of something fabulous…"

Suddenly, the screen nearly fills with a suddenly not-invisible thing that looks like a giant pink whale. It's covered with what looks like small grey and silver postules, and its eyes look completely dead. It's quite possibly the scariest thing you can imagine seeing, and looks enormous.

A red alert starts to go off, and Oracle slowly turns.

"Oh lady of shadows…" she says, her jaw dropping to the floor. "Not again."

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on Mar 22, 2007, 9:18am

"Again? …Should we be escaping, not just…floating here in space?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Prime on Mar 22, 2007, 9:19am

Nicolette stared at it, but maintained enough composure to voice the obvious question.
"…What is this thing?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 9:22am

"There is no escape. We will try, you will see. Helm, evasive maneuvers!" Oracle shouts.

The ship immediately starts accelerating, turning, and decelerating, in seemingly random order. The crew is good, but it seems that the whale is somehow…well, it's like a kid on a bike trying to outrun a car. A race car. The whale casually paces the Juber, and even cuts it off a few times, resulting in the ship taking unexpected turns. Everyone is falling on the floor like a bad episode of Star Trek.

"This thing," says Oracle, "is an Acanti. A space whale, enslaved by the Brood, essentially the nastiest alien species known to the Shi'ar. The slaver virus was cured, though. They should not have Acanti."

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Mar 22, 2007, 9:24am

"Um…what are Brood, exactly?" I have a bad feeling I should be really scared, but it's hard to when our enemy rides around inside a giant pink whale. Can't be that tough. "I mean, what do they look like, what do they do?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Prime on Mar 22, 2007, 9:25am

"So what can we do in this situation?" asked Nicolette firmly, "And also, what can we do?"
She remained hovering in the air, neatly keeping herself from falling. She made sure to give support to the others as well, when she could.

Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Mar 22, 2007, 9:27am

This is definately different.

"I'm with Nicolette on this one, what exactly can we do?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 9:29am

"What we should do is try to get away. What we can do is probably die."

Oracle pauses as the ship throws everyone about again.

"The Brood are parasites. They infect living beings with eggs, which turn them into Brood, and they absorb all the knowledge and memories of the host. They look like giant insects, more or less, maybe also analogous to scorpions, with wings. There is quite a bit of variety to them. They have two layers of armor on their bodies, making them incredibly durable. They have immense super strength, poisonous stingers, and the ability to project illusions, as well as any abilities the hosts may have had. Also, they are ruthless and sadistic. And? That ship is almost the equivalent of a planet worth of Brood. Oh, and they don't mind if you kill a few hundred of them as long as they get whatever they want. They can make more."

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on Mar 22, 2007, 9:30am

"How do they get stopped?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 9:31am

Oracle looks at Rapt intently. Taking a cue from Nico, she is also hovering slightly.

"They don't get stopped. They just keep coming. Years ago, we destroyed their home world and freed the Acanti, with the help of the X-Men. You see how useful that was."

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Mar 22, 2007, 9:33am

Oh. Okay. Oddly enough, this reminds me of that movie with that lady who was on the spaceship with all these other soldiers and it was the future and they were fighting aliens on this planets and they had acid for blood and stuff.

Only, you know, real.

I'm scared now, and I don't mind showing it; I hold on to Nicolette's hand…and Rapt's hand…I'd probably hold to Chi and Seed's hands if I had extra arms. I can't use my powers up here…

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Prime on Mar 22, 2007, 9:35am

Nicolette held Roxanne's as reassuringly as she could.
"What about the space here? Could we use it to our advantage to escape somehow? Are there any nebulas or some-such around?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild

"Any asteroids or comets in the area maybe?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 9:37am

"The Acanti is extremely durable…also, it does not serve the Brood willingly. It's essentially a slave. Our guns cannot hurt it, although there are some things we can do."

Oracle turns.

"Strafe the cities, concentrate fire on one."

The Juber makes a close pass over the top of the Acanti…it keeps going and going, almost like the Star Destroyer at the beginning of Star Wars, but a pink whale. The postules on the body are little bubbles, containing what look like cities. The Juber's lasers repeatedly hit the bubbles, which don't look to be seriously damaged by it.

"Keep strafing, keep in close so they can't swallow us."

The ship does make a few more passes over the top of the Acanti, and it seems to be doing no good.

Oracle turns to the team.

"Our one hope is this. The Brood are sadistic. They like to play with their food. Hopefully, we'll be able to escape due to their overconfidence, but they will not make it easy. Few have ever escaped without infection. Even the X-Men were infected."

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Prime on Mar 22, 2007, 9:39am

"If they were infected, they must have escaped somehow… Anyhow, overconfidence is a very good thing to turn on someone."

She looked at the screen intently.

"Umm what the hell is Moby Dick doing in outerspace trying to eat us?"

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Mar 22, 2007, 9:55am

I shake my head at Curt…a little disgusted, but I keep it myself. "It's, like, the whale is this planet, and it's got all these aliens called Brood on it, and they're trying to kill us…like usual." Also, I though Moby Dick was supposed to be white, not pink, but I keep that to myself, too.

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 9:57am

Oracle shakes her head.

"This was definitely a trap. There are no favorable stellar features in an acceptable range. As for what is most effective against them…anything, really, just a lot of it. If we get into combat, turn your laser rifles to the highest setting. Kill them before they kill you, and never count one out without confirming. They will have the Acanti swallow us, force open the airlock, and board. Then, they will take some of us to their queen, who will lay eggs within us. The rest, they will eat."

Oracle looks determined.

"I have a plan, though. Give me one moment to confirm something."

"Um…one second." I run off to my room, look through my stuff, find my laser gun and bring it back. Might as well be a little useful.

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 10:01am

Oracle shakes her head.

"The Danger Room is too small, also, the Acanti are able to drain power from vessels. The Danger Room requires a lot of power. And there are likely millions of Brood on this vessel. Eventually, we will be overcome by numbers."

She looks around.

"Here is the plan. The Slaver Virus manipulates the Acanti's brain. I feel that if I can get close enough to the brain, I can temporarily override the Virus. When they invariably swallow and trap us, we head out of the airlock immediately, hopefully surprising them, in a small team to get to the brain. Some, like Kalvin and Roxanne, stay behind to guard the ship. We have an arboretum on the ship, it isn't far from the airlock, there should be enough there for Roxanne and Kalvin to help defend the ship."

I'm staying behind…I can deal with that. I wish I could do something to help out the others, but I guess helping to guard the ship is pretty important, too. I just hope these Brood guys don't look as scary as they sound…though, probably, they look worse.

"We'll keep the ship safe while you're gone."

"Well, I'm in. You can't do it by yourself, and this situation won't fix itself."

She was going to survive by herself.

Rapt's gunnery skills will have him more valuable airborne and protected by Nicolette and I. Take every shot you can. Take an extra rifle, too. Curt will run interference on the ground. Try not to engage them directly. They are stronger than you, and can be surprisingly fast."

Oracle looks around.

"I hope Nadia is able to join us as well."

Then, she answers Rapt.

"As for upgrading, yes, the system checks for successful training procedures. Also, in regards to the poison possibility…the Brood are very durable, more durable than any of us, except possibly Nicolette. There is no easy way to kill them by poison."

The Juber keeps playing what can best be described as a game of cat and mouse with the Acanti, firing on the cities. One of them does breech, resulting in a massive amount of insectoid things getting sucked out into space. While it seems like a victory, the team can't help but notice that there were probably about a hundred sucked into space, and that seems like a small portion of the city, and there seems to be hundreds of the cities.

«I've received word that Chi will undoubtedly and happily go on the suicide r…er, mission with Oracle. I'm going to just hang out for a minute hoping for TEO, but in the end, it won't matter much.»

Suddenly, the Acanti looms in front of the Juber. It's incredibly fast for something that big. It opens its mouth, and suddenly, lights on consoles around the deck start failing.

"We've lost helm control."

"Life support systems still online. Shutting down non-essential systems."

All the bridge crew are going about their duties very solemnly. Oracle looks at the team, as the lights start to flicker off.

"That's our cue to head to the airlock."

«We pause for a recap.

Investigating the source of the communications malfunctions, the Juber pinpointed an anomaly that turned out to be a trap by the Brood, riding a giant zombie pink space whale. The Juber's no match for the Acanti, and Oracle devises a plan where some of the team (volunteers only) takes a run at the Acanti's brain as soon as they're forcibly docked, hopefully surprising the Brood who they assume are waiting to break in. Curt, Rapt, and Nico volunteered to accompany her. Seed and Roxy are staying on the ship, by Oracle's decree.»

The ship starts to shake as it's pulled into a docking station inside the Acanti's mouth. The team is all assembled by the airlock, fully armed.

Oracle looks them over. "Those who are staying behind, cover us when we leave, but as soon as we are out of sight, close the airlock. Don't make it easier for them than it has to be."

The ship starts to shake more violently now. It's getting pulled in, and time is obviously getting short.

Oracle looks around one more time.

"Roxanne, Kalvin, there is something you should know. When the ship is freed, when we have succeeded, there will be a five minute window to leave. The Juber must take that window, regardless of where we are."

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 22, 2007, 12:04pm

Suddenly, the shaking stops. For a moment, the airlock is quiet as a tomb.

"Here we go," says Oracle, grimly, and hits the emergency override to immediately open the airlock, without the standard decompression procedures. A small group of Brood is already outside, but they are small. Oracle quickly goes airborne, flying past them, shooting psi-bolts. She didn't waste a split second.

Meanwhile, the inner workings of the Acanti…the room you're in looks like a cross between a spaceship junkyard and a very large and somewhat nasty mouth. The Acanti is obviously fleshy on the inside, and there is about knee deep liquid on the floor. About 15 Brood are within laser range, and they all appear surprised.

Acanti

«Pick a color. Any color.»

The team makes a quick exit, with Oracle and Prime in front, Rapt following slightly behind, and Reflex leading Chi and Osmosis Lass on the ground. And it's easy…at first. The Brood go down fast, a few lasers hits seem to be all any of them can take, and the team quickly progresses across the chamber. However, about halfway across, the Brood have taken up positions in the various debris in the mouth area, essentially sniping the team. Prime takes a shot, but it doesn't hurt much. Not to her. But it's obvious that it could have turned Rapt into fried chicken.

Juber

«You guys can stay default color.»

As soon as the team gets out of sight, about twenty to thirty Brood enter from the opposite direction, carrying something that looks like a large mounted blowtorch. They quickly affix it to the airlock, obviously being very practiced at this.

"One at a time, we'll throw down cover fire and move forward. Fastest first, that means Reflex, then Prime, then me, then Rapt, then Chi, then Osmosis Lass."

She moved to a medium-sized piece of debris near them, lifted it up and threw it towards a nearby position of enemies. Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild

Kalvin's shot succeeds…pinpoint accuracy. He should be proud. The blowtorch blows up, taking two Brood with it.

Then, another Brood strides up, simply inserts two metallic claws into the newly formed hole, and peels the airlock back as if he was opening a bag of chips.

I catch Curt's "Absorb lasers?" comment and keep it mind for myself. I don't think a form so potentially unstable is warranted yet, but it could be a good idea if we get swarmed. The glass does form into a golem, and meanwhile, the steel Brood is slowed down by the plants, but not much. One swing from his tail splinters trees.

Chi does cut through the wall, a little, and then the mucous pushes everyone except Prime back into the main chamber.

The steel Brood just shrugs off the shots…then does something weird. It begins to shift into a human form. A familiar human form.

He picks up a splintered tree and knocks glass Golem into a wall.

Osmosis Lass, Prime, and Oracle find themselves in the same room. Once the others left the tunnel, Prime oddly felt like she shouldn't resist anymore. Five Brood are in this room, one holding down Osmosis Lass, one next to Prime (the teleporting one, who has a slightly bluish tint), and the rest standing around. Oracle is unconscious.

"I understand you feel you are my students…" says the largest Brood, who looks very differently than the others and speaks just like…Professor X?

This was bad. They couldn't actually do anything, unless… Nadia could shift into a form that didn't allow her to be manipulated telepathically? Miss Frost had told her a little about telepathy…
"Professor Xavier isn't an alien parasite, enjoying the murder of innocents."

She specifically avoided trying to form a plan in her head.

I still struggle, but the Brood on me is strong enough to keep me pinned. I resist a little less, mostly out of confusion, when I hear the largest Brood speak. Logically, I know it can't be the Prof. I'm still creeped out by it.

"… what's going on? Who are you?"

"So just like that?" I say, mostly stalling, to the X-Brood that stayed behind. "You lose against the Brood in your universe and wind up sadistic monsters? No resisting your impulses? No nothing?"

Nico looks non-violent… but I wonder if shooting me counts as violence if I can't be hurt by it? Now if I had the first clue how to send her a signal… Screw subtlety. The instant any of the Brood start talking I cut them off with "Shoot me!"

Though whether that works largely depends on what constitutes "violence."

Slowly, slowly, with supreme effort of will, Nico manages to move her gun slightly, only enough to aim at "Kitty Pryde." Convenient. Go Nico! I'm up. I'm metal. But, not for long. I have no idea what metal I turned into off of that bracelet, but the Brood are stronger than I am in that form. Last time I took a form like this I killed Phantazia. But this is, I tell myself, a lot more like squashing bugs.

I shoot myself in the foot with my rifle.

As it hits me, I shift into an energy form to match what was being produced by the weapon. I look around at the Brood and settle on the Kitty-Brood that was pinning me before. I raise a crackling energy hand at it, pointing as if it were a gun.

"Bang."

Except instead of firing a blast, I fire my entire body and try to direct myself through her and as many other Brood in the room as I can.

But then, taking other forms has always supressed emotions like that - energy forms most of all. I suppose I'll have to deal with it later. Right now, though, you can just call me Raid. Mike manages to avoid getting punched by Nightcrawler again…and actually tags him. With a purely lucky shot that has a one in a million chance of ever happening again, he takes the Brood out. And Hussar was going to fail him. Pshaw.

Oracle is dumbfoundedly probing the hole in her shoulder for a few minutes, looking shellshocked. Then she picks up one of the conveniently placed robes that comic characters always find in these instances.

Words fail me. Waking up naked and bleeding would usually disturb me greatly but that's tuned out by the prospect of becoming one of them.

Words fail me.

I try to shift into anything not at all paying attention to what, hoping upon hope that the egg wont survive the change. It doesn't really cross my mind that I'm not at all sure how I would check to see if it worked.

Nicolette couldn't bring herself to comfort Nadia by saying nothing was going to happen. She WANTED to believe it so badly, but even she realized it was a stretch. For a moment, she just kept staring at her wound, wearing a desperate grimace. After a while, she shook her head and moved to clothe herself with another robe.

"We have to do what we can," she muttered quietly and blankly.

Bella…

The overloaded rifle lands in the snot tunnel…Chi's field snaps up…and the rifle blows. Chi gets Rapt's spare rifle, the mucous spews everyone out of the tunnel, Chi passes out from air loss and his shield goes down, but either Rapt or Reflex can catch him. That's when they see the mouth start to open again…wider…and they're back in the bay, and they can feel the pull of space.

The ship starts to shake, and the Brood start to run away. Fast. Really fast. They can't wait to get out of here.

The ship starts to shake violently. Oracle stands, pales even more than usual, then heads in a seemingly random direction.

I try to maintain an upright position throught the shakes. If the Cyclops Brood that Nicolette killed had a weapon, I pick it up, compensating for my supressed powers and then head after Oracle. My head is hung sadly. More than anything right now, almost more than wanting them back so I kill this egg, I would like my powers back because things like imminent death don't bother me as much when I'm not human…

There was no weapon by Cyclops…what does he need a laser for? Brood Cyclops can control the beams, too.

Nadia can almost sense the egg inside her now. It's like a substance that she could turn into. It seems to almost be mocking her…that she could become the egg.

Oracle remains silent, and just strides purposefully forward.

They wish to turn us on each other, and also give us each the hope that we can escape intact. Unfortunately, I know who has the eggs. My psychic ability informs me. But I cannot reveal it because…"

Oracle begins to cry, and Nicolette notices that they've traveled not near the brain, but near an…ear? Through a thin membrane, she can see the vastness of space.

"The Juber is free. It is time for me to bid you goodbye, Nicolette."

Rapt, Mike, and Curt are on board the Juber, and the secondary airlock engages. The power drain is gone, and systems are coming back online. And the mouth of the Acanti is opening.

Nicolette hated the cold, sharp feeling in her chest. Worst of all, she didn't think it was a Brood egg, it was just rage and fear boiling up. She zipped up to Oracle and grabbed her by her shoulders.

Mike floats through his own head. It's actually nice in here….very, very empty. A clown in a rowboat passes him by, speaking in a voice that vaguely reminds him of Jonathan Winters, "Nineteen."

Mike tries to respond, but yellow bubbles instead of words come from his mouth. Mike tries to put them back where they belong, but they each pop with a soft, sad little sigh.

And then the red eyed llama came to take Mike's pulse…

On the Juber, the five minute window clock is ticking…it's getting close…four minutes…four and a half…

Oracle suddenly grabs Nadia, and pushes her through the membrane. As soon as she hits vaccuum, she reflexively turns into space gas to prevent herself from dying. She sees the egg fall out, going down into the eardrum of the Acanti.

Oracle turns to Nicolette.

Beautiful. And a hero. And so close to becoming one of them. If she turns Brood she's dead anyway, right? I mean… a monster that looks and sounds like her and can access her memories will be around, but it wont be her. It would defile her memory and the good things that she's done in life… but it wouldn't be her.

I hear Nico on the other side of the door, but she can be halted all over again through telepathy if I let her in. I float up to Oracle and pause for a moment.

"Thank you… and I'm sorry."

Space gas… I don't know what it is. If it's poisonous or what. But I'm pretty certain that what it isn't is oxygen. I place my hand over Oracle's nose and mouth… and then extend myself into her respitory system.

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! #3: Brood to Be Wild

Nicolette calmed down when the door opened. Or, more precisely, she just quieted down.

Oracle's corpse was in plain view. Nadia had done it. She didn't even feel guilty for lacking absolutely any kind of sympathy for her. Not now, at least. She had disobeyed Nicolette's command. She had STOLEN her DUTY away from her. If anything, she felt angry at her.

But, of course, not just at her.

Suddenly, she realized she was hitting a wall. And she didn't just stop after she had delivered the punch - she kept on doing it, again and again. She didn't even care if she left dents of broke through it, she closed her eyes half-way through. It was an absolute guarantee that she wouldn't start crying, at least. Considering how furious she felt, it probably wouldn't have happened anyway. It was over surprisingly fast, and left Nicolette standing by the door, breathing harder than she should have.

"…failed…" she muttered quietly.

1)I only vaguely considered one course of action to save Oracle (the same thing blackmore suggested) but since I was AFK at the time…AND had no way to get in the room…it was moot. The second solution was just a joke.

2)I also considered what the X-Men did…cloning. Couldn't "we" in some way clone or at least save a sample of her to clone later? Although to be fair..when it happened to the X-Men they had a sample from a pre-egged Xavier. But even if that's a requirement…I'm sure we can find a pre-egged sample of Oracle somewhere in her chambers. All chicks, even Shiar ones, leave hair in their brushes.

3)are we sure the alien itself is dead? I don't remember what happens with the Brood…but it seems to me that the queen could simply be feeding off of Oracle's body from the inside until she's strong enough to "hatch" and kill/impregnate us all.

4)Hav, were you dead set on killing off Oracle? Or is this just something you rolled with?»
