"Okay…one second. Un momento, por favor."

This isn't going anywhere. I go back to the others, sighing. "This isn't working right…I kind of thought there'd be something for us to hit by now, but this is…weird." I look over to the Farmhouse. "Maybe we should just let ourselves in."

"We can't just leave them like this, though. I mean, if Stryker can brainwash them, we can unbrainwash them. Golem!"

He emerges from the ground beside us, and I jump into his palm, calling out as he raises up high. "Hey! Everybody!" I call out over the field, hoping my voice carries. "Come over here for a second!"

A little desperate, but it can't hurt to try…what's the worst that could happen? They all seem pretty mild.

Farmhouse:

The reverend shakes his head at Marisol.

"How dare you speak to me like that. I have been nothing but kind and forthcoming to your friends, and yet…you hide yourself, cloaked in your sin, and have the audacity to decry the good I have done! But, I cannot respond to your words of ire in the same method. I simply must hope and pray you eventually understand your sin, and ask your savior to forgive you, and hopefully reach salvation."

Bowling alley:

The sheriff says, "Now hold on there a second."

He looks around.

"You boys said you came with some friends. I know you ain't from around here, because I know everyone from around here. But I don't see no ay-dults, and I don't see no cars. And I know you didn't walk here."

He turns off the sirens in his car.

"So why don'tcha come straight with me. You guys New Warriors?"

Field

Courtney sighs.

"I told you. Like I said, it's not like the town hates, er, hated mutants. They just…these people…they're freaky. So I mean, unfortunately…"

She shrugs.

When Golem appears, most of the people get wide-eyed, and immediately drop to their knees, praying. The crab claw man looks astonished, and crosses himself.

"You must to stop sinning, girl. Stop sinning!"

The Reverend shakes his head.

"You just don't understand your sin yet, and that's normal. A stage of denial is frequent. But, eventually, I hope, you will understand your sin, and ask for salvation. I will help you, when you understand. It would be my pleasure to help you find forgiveness. I cannot hate you for your misunderstanding…I understand that your sin is difficult for you to understand. I cannot hate you for your unkind words. I can only pray that one day, you will understand, and on that day, you will step on the road to salvation. Your friend is beginning to understand."

He indicates Lex.

The crab man nods vigorously.

"Yes. Frustrating. Not to speak English good. Need Amelia Chow. But you stop sin, good for you."

But I've seen worse, and it's not like I'm a prize. But the way he hugs me is just…creepy. And it doesn't help that he smells bad, too. "Okay…okay." The Reverend shakes his head.

"Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about, girl. And it pains me to discuss this again, but I will, one last time. For you."

He pauses.

"My wife was pregnant. And we got in a horrible car accident. I was the only survivor. If my son had been born, we would have named him Gerald, after my father. But he wasn't born. There was an accident. A horrible accident."

And, in reference to the "dumb" comment:

"You'll learn to understand the X sin and seek salvation, too."

He smiles at Roxanne, a disturbingly friendly smile.

Bowling alley:

I assume everyone gets in the sheriff's car, and he'll take them a little ways away from the farm. Let the farm run a couple more posts, then I'll announce you showing up. Unless someone strongly objects.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Last Hero on Jan 30, 2007, 1:43pm

I step back at his smile, feel a shiver run up, but keep talking. "Apparently he was born. Because he's living at the mansion. And his name is Gerald. And he's been saying your his dad, since…forever. And he wouldn't lie, and he isn't crazy. And he's in a coma and everything. So why don't you just come to the mansion and we can take your blood or something like they do on the Maury show, and we can prove that you are the father…because you are."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 30, 2007, 1:49pm

The Reverend seems taken aback.

"Young lady, I don't think you understand. There was a terrible accident. A terrible accident. Surely you can understand this? My wife and son were taken from me, and you and your friends come here, to my farm, and continue to harrass me about a painful memory, perhaps the most painful I have? Please, I beg of you. Do not discuss this further."

As if on cue, the door to the wooden building behind the tents opens, and Amelia Chow emerges (a 15 year old Chinese girl wearing blue jeans and a Hello Kity T-shirt). She seems really depressed, especially to people who met her earlier, but when she notices the Reverend, she smiles slightly (although it doesn't go all the way to her eyes), and approaches.

The Reverend says, "Ah, Amelia has finished her quiet contemplation time. You'll forgive me for turning you back over to her. I have…other business to attend to."

He starts to turn away.

This would be where everyone else can show up.

Post by Last Hero on Jan 30, 2007, 2:03pm

No, no, no, no, no. He can't just walk away, not when we need him, not when Gerald's about to die, and…no.

A wall burst up in front of him, cutting him off; a little rougher than I'd like, but at really at the end of my rope here. "Sir, please." I run over to the side of the wall, cutting him off even more. "I'm begging you, please come back to the Mansion. Just look at Gerald, please, even if you don't think you're his Dad…it'll help. He's my friend and he'll die and he needs you."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 30, 2007, 2:05pm

Stryker looks bemused, and is about to respond to Sephula when the wall comes between them. He looks around quickly, hoping to find a way out…any way out.

Amelia runs over to Roxanne. "No! Please don't! Stop sinning, stop sinning, stop sinning! And to the Reverend!" She seems very…emotional.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Last Hero on Jan 30, 2007, 2:10pm

"I'm not sinning! I don't even think I really know what that means!" I hate to yell, but all this…this is getting on my nerves. "I just want you to come and see my friend so he won't die. Is that too much to ask?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 30, 2007, 2:20pm

Amelia says, "The X sin! The X sin! The X sin!" She's clearly hysterical again.

Reverend Stryker taps on the stone wall calmly, recovering himself. Then he turns to Roxanne.

"Young lady, you are very confused. You probably think this," he taps on the wall again, "is doing the right thing. It is not. Your friends have tried to say that I use trickery and deception, when they are the trickers and deceivers. Do you feel I have trapped people, when it is you that are doing the trapping?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Last Hero on Jan 30, 2007, 2:30pm

I'm getting emotional, I'm embarrassing myself…I lower the wall. "I don't know a lot about religion or God or much of anything, really…I wasn't even born like my friends, I was created. So maybe it's not my place to say. But what we do, it isn't wrong. I mean, yeah, some people like us use our powers the wrong way, but it's just like a normal person with a gun. They can use it to protect or they can use it to hurt. The gun isn't good or bad, it's the person. There's nothing wrong with us, but there is something wrong with a crazy old man who can't even remember his own son and doesn't care whether he rots on a bed somewhere!"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 30, 2007, 2:36pm

Stryker gets a bit of a creepy look as he reflects.

"You're wrong, young lady. If there were nothing wrong with mutants, mutants wouldn't be here. All of these people, all of them, every man woman and child, they have all felt the pain of their X sin, and wish to be absolved, wish to find salvation. I'm not crazy. And I have no problems with remembering my son, as I said before. In some ways, all of this…" Stryker gestures around, "is because of him. In his memory."

Then, he turns to Sephula. "I'm not sure what you're talking about. Care to elucidate?"

I can't take this, I can't take this, I just cannot take this.

I move to the back of the group, rubbing my temples, crying…it hurts. Almost physical pain. There's a part of me, a very big part that I'd hoped would stay locked up, that wants to prove him right and rip this entire place to pieces and drag him back to Gerald. It would be so easy, but it would be wrong, and I know that, but…

Calm down. Just calm down.

To Sephula:

"It's not just those suffering from the mutant plague. There are many more mutants than those here. Like, Amelia. Amelia, have you felt suffering due to your X sin?"

Amelia nods, sadly.

To Marisol:

"Are you not familiar with Babel? The flood? Sodom and Gamorrah? The plagues upon the Egyptians, who, I might add, seem to be the race who first exhibited mutants? It's all in there. All of it."

This is getting ridiculous.

"I think everyone needs to take a chill pill. It's obvious that neither side is willing to even consider that the other is right so why bother aruging? I turned to Kidd.

"He's lying. You should know that already."

He just wouldn't. That's not the sort of person. If he says that this guy is his Dad, then this guy is his Dad and that's all there is to it." I sigh. "I just…I know this isn't getting us anywhere, but there's something wrong about all this, and we can't just leave it. I don't want to…"

Stryker nods condescendingly at Sephula. "Of course you were, son. Of course you were. But those things do have bearing on this: the distancing between God and man. It's happened for thousands of years. And mutants are the symptom."

Then he smiles at Kidd.

"At least someone here has respect for a man's property. I've tried to be as helpful as I can, and if any of you seek salvation, you are welcome to return."

He shakes his head.

"……you can't really fight with that sort of logic, can you? Of course, I could come back and declare that God told me mutants were made of cotton candy. Then we could sit around and argue about who had the stronger connection to Insane God."

Haven't been here long but I can imagine the Reverend's been spitting the same rhetoric out for quite a while. Kidd does have a point, we aren't getting anywhere with this little flame war.

Kelly

Getting a bit desperate, I turned to the Reverend.

“What about this…? You come and see our friend, and I’ll look through all of this, seriously, and hear all that you have to say with an open mind. Think about it. A chance to convert someone who’s as much of a non-believer as I am.”

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation

The Reverend considers Dillan and Kelly's remarks.

"Well, there are a few issues with each of your ways of thinking. Young man," he turns to Dillan, "if you labor under the assumption that I am the father, and your friends feel the same way, then could I not simply request his transfer? And as for you, Kelly, as enchanting as your offer is, I simply cannot leave Salvation Farm at this time. Before you came, I might have been able to. Amelia had made so much progress. But now, what you've done to her…"

He shakes his head.

"I cannot leave at this time."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 30, 2007, 4:51pm

The barn:

The barn has several cows in it. People are working on rebuilding some areas that are structurally sound but cosmetically bad (fixing holes in walls, pouring concrete, that sort of thing), and others are working on the care and feeding of the animals. Everything is obviously done by hand, or, at least, without the benefit of machinery or mutant powers.

"Here is my plan for salvation. Hard work helps you repent. It's a physical way to show your new path. As people work, they realize how little the X sin benefits them. They can show great progress and do great things without it. We are working on producing organic milk and crops, and making our own cheeses and such, to be sold at small local farmer's markets. This will enable us to channel more money into projects, such as what you saw in the house. Before I came, this place was worn down and had not seen work in decades. Now, look at it. The face of progress. The face of salvation."

He seemed very interested in Gerald despite claiming to not have any children. The longer Lex stays, the greater the chances his head is one we'll have to bust."

I point towards the farm.

"Who's with me?"

Dillan

"God…god damn it all." I curse. I've gotten good at seeing all the possibilities, very good and right now I'm just not seeing any where we make moves based on logic. "You're right, if we just ran in there we could possibly be overwhelemed by all of the mutants, plus, we'd reaffirm their belief that the X-gene was a sin by our attack on their home."

"But if we just leave Lex there and wait it out, either he won't find anything at all, or Stryker just might make him kill himself….assuming of course that's what he did to the others." I look at Cylops and grow angry. "What the hell kind of mission is this? You knew from the beginning it wouldn't be as simply as just going and ringing a doorbell didn't you?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation

Cyclops smiles.

"No mission is as easy as going and ringing a doorbell. This was planned to help you understand that. And no mission is as easy as 'go punch the bad guy' either."

He pauses.

"Well, very few of them, anyway."

Also, know that if we do break this up, tomorrow we'll be slandered in the news media for our role in this. No matter what we find in there, we will be held responsible for some incredibly overstated feat of violence against a peaceful religious group."

Scott grabs the Shi'Ar Etch-a-Sketch.

"So, here's the buildings we can see by satellite."

They all pop up, even the tents.

"What do we know about what's in them?"

Then he turns to Curt.

So be stealthy and invisible, find Lex, find out if he's been compromised. If he hasn't been compromised, extract him, and we go home. The Farm

There are driveways full of vehicles. There is a two story farmhouse. There is a large tent city behind the farmhouse, and a small wooden shed-like building behind that. A short distance past that is a large barn. Surrounding the area are various and sundry fields. There are a number of people out and about, working on the farm. You can't initially see Lex.

Inside the tent are three men, one with bizarrely long arms and legs. All three men appear middle-aged, slightly depressed, and non-combative.

One of them speaks up.

"You came after Alexander, right? Unfortunately, Stryker's already gotten to him. He won't leave with you, and if you approach him, the Reverend might get to you too. I'll tell you what's going on here, you listen and do what you can. Understood?"

"I suppose you don't. But, I do have a way, in a way. We can distract Ms. Chow so that you can speak with Alexander briefly. That will convince you, if you are his friend."

He sighs.

"There is…a personal prayer time that all converts must go through. Somehow, it leaves them with more…clarity. When a follower stumbles on his path, they are sent for personal reflection, and immediately become more convinced than ever that they need salvation. Now, that's only if the big man notices, and he tends to only notice the important, or incredibly powerful. That's the problem. There's a group of us who realized what's going on and have avoided further programming, but there's nothing we can do. Far as we can tell, takes a few weeks to get rid of the programming, but other things sometimes do it too. Not sure how. So, want us to separate Alexander and Ms. Chow? You can talk to him, see if you don't agree with us."

Amelia nods. "You need salvation too. And you can have it."

Amelia interrupts. "The X Sin! It makes them lie! It makes them spread unhappiness! It makes them hate salvation!"

Her sword appears and she runs towards Chi.

"I must. I must stop you from sinning. Even if I sin myself. I will have my salvation."

Lex seems like he's coming out of some form of confusion.

"Yes. If we sin once, we stop others from sinning."

Kelly just quite possibly saved my life Chi thought as he took a major step back behind Kelly. What really sucks here is that we've been so busy lately that I never even got a chance to introduce myself to her…and here she is saving my life. My mom would be so embarrassed by me.

"So much for the X sin! Looks like youre even quicker to use your 'sin' then I am."

Hopefully she has no idea that is because your powers really suck… Chi's force field finally slides back in place around his arms…he eyes the sword, and decides that he'd better cover up his chest and stomach too.

Lex and Sephula meet in solo combat.

"When you find salvation, you will see how misguided we were."

His first punch hurts. A lot.

Amelia dodges Kelly's blast, but one ankle is caught by Marisol. She sweeps the sword down towards Marisol's arm.

"It would be better if you came to salvation willingly."

Other residents of the farm start to move in behind Lex and Amelia. Some obvious mutants, some less so. The crab claw man is here, as are several others. They seem ready to assist Lex and Amelia, but have not moved yet.

The sword struck Marisol's arm, not to a great effect. It didn't actually do any visible damage, though she actually felt it a bit because of the lingering cold. She was still shivering slightly, but didn't let it get to her.

She pulled Amelia towards herself sharply, intent on capturing her and knocking her out… or something.

Lex honestly says,

He swings at Sephula again.

Meanwhile, Amelia's sword clatters out of her hand as she's yanked by Marisol. She tries to twist and gain leverage on something, but fails. The sword disappears.

The crab claw man says, "Do not hurt Amelia Chow, sinners! She finds salvation!"

The group of mutants that were just looking on now have a definite attacking posture. There's about twenty or so of them. The numbers game does not look good for the New Mutants.

Gratuitous fight scene

Lex lands a glancing blow on Sephula despite the dodge, but it still hurts. Meanwhile, the two attacks succeed, knocking him for a loop.

"It doesn't matter. I will be saved. You will not."

And that's when the crab claw man jumps Sephula, tearing into his arm as he's preoccupied with Lex.

"You will not hurt the saved!" says the crab claw man.

Meanwhile, Amelia looks spitefully at Marisol.

Marisol didn't even think about it, just let go. She threw a punch at her opponent's face and jumped back.

Curt hits his com device.

"I think the source of their "programming" is the wooden building between the tents and the barn. I'd go by myself but it's possible I'd just come under it's effects as well."

"Mr. Summers is there anyway you can do a long range scan to see what/who is in there?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Feb 1, 2007, 3:24pm

Amelia gets hit from two directions, with Kelly's light blast shattering the icicle and cutting her arms with the shards, and Marisol punching her in the face. Unfortunately, the timing also caused Marisol to get tagged by the icicle fragments. It hurts, a lot, but it's able to be worked through. Amelia falls over.

Distracted by the crab claw man, Sephula misses blocking a punch square in the nose from Lex. "You need salvation. You need salvation. You need salvation." He sounds exactly like a broken record.

The crab claw man seems somewhat stymied by Sephula's attack, but the follow-up didn't work so well, with Lex being able to double team him. It doesn't look like anyone else has decided to use funky powers yet, but you can almost feel it about to happen. Like right before an intense thunderstorm.

Reflex

"You're talking needle/haystack there, Curt. The place is crawling with mutants. It's impossible to isolate any. I could take out the building from a distance…if I knew it was empty. I don't think you should investigate too far, though. Get close, I might have an idea."

Suddenly, Lex starts crying.

"I didn't mean to sin…salvation…I'll be good…salvation…"

He collapses almost into the fetal position.

The crab claw man presses an attack on Sephula.

A claw hand latches onto Sephula's other arm (the one that wasn't pinched earlier).

Another optic blast shoots past Curt, hitting the Crucifix. As it falls apart, Curt sees machinery of some sort behind it, and a man running out a door on the other side of the building.

Despite the machinery obviously being screwed up, the need for salvation doesn't stop. Curt is in a conflicted state where he wants salvation, but he also knows he's being manipulated to want it. But he can't stop wanting it.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation

Sephula does knock the crab man down, but he's definitely reaching near the limits of his available powers, after getting clocked a few times from Lex, clawed, and using the boost. A pale man walks forward from the group of mutants, gestures, and Sephula is entangled in strong cables of metal that shoot out of the ground.

"Prisoner exchange," he says calmly. "We need Amelia Chow."

The cables start to constrict around Sephula, and everyone notices the power failing.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation

The cables expel Sephula, sending him several yards airborne, where Kelly (or Roxanne, or whoever) can easily grab him before he becomes road pizza. He's mostly out of it, though.

The pale man says, "Amelia Chow is one of us."

He gestures towards Lex.

"Alexander is one of us."

He gestures towards the crab claw man.

"Antonio is one of us. We need all of those seeking salvation. You can seek salvation too. We can help. We forgive you. We are sinners too."

Curt's able to stop the machinery with great effort, but it doesn't stop him from wanting salvation.

In fact, he almost wants it more now. All the strain causes him to feel that he really is sinning and hurting himself with his powers.

«In game terms, the machinery amplified the use of a specific mutant power, which allowed said power to implant itself more powerfully. You have stopped it from affecting more people, but stopping the machine doesn't stop what it's done. As the small skirmish takes place, off to the side, observing at the edge, or possibly just past hearing range, has been one of Salvation Farm's inhabitants, standing with a sledgehammer in one hand, its head resting on the soft ground, dragging a fence post, quite obviously having been busy going to repair the farm's fence somewhere, the fencepost drops, and the hammer is leaned on with both hands, a set of wings slightly taller than their teenage owner framing his silouhette, as he watches the new arrivals blaspheme against the farm's rules, and use their abilities to assault the others from the farm.

After a short time, as the cables put Amelia back with her group, the teen moves closer to hear what is being said, staying to the side, and roughly the middle of the two groups, keeping his hammer in his hand, its head trailing along the ground.

Behind the group of mutants, Cyclops and…another group of mutants stand. Farm residents, seemingly angry. The group caught in the middle seems confused and perplexed, unsure whether to stand or back down, now that the numbers are no longer in their favor.

For Curt, the effect isn't really wearing off yet. Cyclops asks him to just go back to the jet and wait, since it's apparent he's somewhere in between himself and zombie (before he rounds up the posse).

[I don't think it's gone on too long…I mean, maybe, but if anything it's because of the rather difficult nature of the mission. It wasn't quite as straight forward as usual, and asked some tough questions. It was a nice change of pace, I thought.]

I compress the underground power source and TV cables, ripping through them pretty easy…not sure how much good it'll do, but it's nice to contribute.

«OK. So if I was able to make it back to the jet»

Reflex sits there one second comtemplating on all the sinning he's done, the next, literally saying "What the fuck?!?!"

«If he wasn't able to make it to the jet»

Reflex stands there crying when he realizes all the mental fornification he's done with both Ms. Grey and Ms. Frost.

«I was going to say that Curt could get back to the jet with little issue, but damn, is the second option amusing. Your call.»

Cyclops looks at the New Mutants again.

"So, what do we do now?"

Chi is pretty banged up and bruised, but manages to make his way over to Lex, "Lex, buddy? You all right?"

And then, because Cyclops is awesome and people seemed more interested in social actions today and the gamemaster had things that needed resolving before an early morning meeting, the Farm loyalists give up.

Cyclops offers for anybody who desires to go back to the mansion for help, and some take him up. He also orders that the loyalists undergo some telepathic probing before they are released. William Stryker and a number of other farm based mutants snuck away during the scuffle, and the power line issues caused the death of two of the Legacy Virus patients.

Other than that, it's homeward bound. A fall-out topic will be started soon.

«The last three NM missions have all involved moral quandries actually. Hmm…I wonder if that is the problem. We'll see with my next mission. No moral issues at all. Just weirdness »

«BTW, if that is the problem, that is really a shame. I thought the last three missions were much more interesting and enjoyable than the simple stuff I had been doing. There is only so much you can get with introduce bad guy, beat up bad guy, end of story.»
