New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 10:32am

The New Mutants (and any ancilliary characters that wish to be in the class) are in a History of the X-Men class, taught by Scott Summers.

Anyone who isn't on for a while can be sleeping in the back. It makes sense.

"Today, we're going to speak about intolerance, one of the biggest enemies the X-Men have ever had. Possibly THE biggest."

He looks around the room.

"I'm sure all of you have had experiences with people who looked down upon you for being homo superior. We all have. While these isolated incidents are painful and hurtful in and of themselves, they also lead to larger problems. This blind unreasoning hatred has been the cause of many difficult times, both for the X-Men, and the world. Sentinels, for instance."

He flicks on a slide show of various Sentinel battles.

"Senator Kelly's attempted mutant registration act."

A shot of Senator Kelly, looking evil. Someone has apparently drawn devil horns and a goatee on the slide.

"Um, moving right along."

It comes to a blank slide.

"Anyone remember any other episodes of widespread mutant hysteria?"

"Stryker. And that fanatic religion of his."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 10:42am

"Yes. Actually, I was hoping someone would bring that up."

The slide changes to Magneto confronting Reverend Stryker in Madison Square Garden.

"William Stryker, father of Gerald Stryker, tried to kill his own son purely because the son was a mutant. When the X-Men confronted William, Gerald was convinced that his father's way was right, and attacked the X-Men. Now, this is why I wanted to talk about this."

Cyclops pauses.

"I've been talking to the Professor, and I've noted that when Gerald encountered his father, he had much more power than he did when he joined us at the mansion. Professor Xavier has informed me that he did not use any mental blocks to reduce his power. I asked him if it was possible that his father caused some form of mental reaction within the son that might be beneficial in resuscitating him, and I got a qualified maybe. Now, I know not all of you were particularly close to Gerald, but I know that you understand the concept behind not leaving a teammate to die when you can help it. William Stryker was released from prison recently, and we've been training on covert operations recently. Stryker knows all the X-Men, so we would rather have the lot of you discover what he is up to now, and bring him back here UNDER HIS OWN WILL if you can. It may be a way to help Gerald. But we can't force people to do things they don't want to, obviously."

He pauses.

"Discussion?"

Sephula

"What's there to discuss?" I asked with a shrug.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 10:48am

"Well, there's plenty to discuss," said Cyclops.

"I mean, basically, you guys are ready to go somewhere based on a slide and a couple of old news reports that you may half remember? Keep in mind, I'm not going to hold your hand like Rogue. You need a lot more than what you have now if the mission is going to succeed."

Sephula

"Well, with all due respect, Mr. Summers, I'm ready to go no matter what," I told him.

This is my chance to make up for my failure… with the Legacy Virus.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Last Hero on Jan 29, 2007, 10:54am

"I got a question." I raise my hand like a good little student, even though I've never seen the slide. A little curious about Gerald's dad. "From the sound of it, this guy might actually be kind of glad about what happened to Gerald…why can't we make him do what we want? I mean, if it means helping Gerald."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 10:56am

"Because then we're no better than him. Haven't you been paying attention in Ethics?"

Scott pauses a moment.

"Never mind. Forgot Emma took over Ethics. That explains things. No, we cannot force someone to do what we want them to do."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation

Sephula

I spoke, a little hesitantly.

"Not that I'm agreeing that should be what we do, but to be fair… we aren't subscribing to genocide and facism. I doubt making him do something to save someone would lower us to his level."

Chi shakes his head, "When we were in Peaksville, I had to listen to all of you guys talk about what Timmy was doing was equal to slavery. But, for this jerk, it's okay to just "make him" do what we want, because he's an enemy?"

Sephula

"It's not about that, Mike. We aren't saying we should make him do anything. But this guy - he's the cause for so much of the mutant hate. He's the reason why Gerald used to think he shouldn't exist. Timmy took an entire town and warped it into his own image. Have you heard of Apocalypse?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Jan 29, 2007, 11:08am

"Of course, I've heard of Apocalypse. I am not saying this guy is right. But, it would be nice to get some consistency. Timmy was using his power to do what he thought was right. That is exactly what Zeph just proposed we do to Stryker."

Post by Protoman on Jan 29, 2007, 11:08am

"If it can help Gerald, I'm in."

I glance a Mike.

"However, Mike does have a point. We can't just make someone do what we want, or make him think what we want him to think. Gerald wouldn't want that."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Jan 29, 2007, 11:11am

Chi chuckles at Lex, "I think you forget what side of the fight I was on in Peaksville. I am just amazed that some of you guys suddenly feel that way now because it involves a friend…"

I raise my hand.

"Mr. Summers….is it really that wrong to use our powers to do what we think is right? I mean even Magneto…being the nutter that he was…didn't do what he did out of malice. He truly did want to help."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Last Hero on Jan 29, 2007, 11:13am

"I guess so." I lean back in the chair, wipe my nose. "I might not be in for this mission, though; I found a lead on my brother in Florida, and I need to check it out. Might be him, might be Hydro-Man, but I should look into it before it dries up."

Oh, pun. I still got it.

I shook my head.

"We don't, Mike. What Timmy did was… torture, almost."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 11:18am

Scott looks intently at Dillan.

"What we think is right. Well, in some ways, that's exactly what we do. We use our powers to help ease the tension between humans and mutants. We stop evil mutants, and we help humanity. But there is a line. We can't just kidnap people because it would help us. If William Stryker is doing nothing wrong, and doesn't wish to come here, we shouldn't make him. It's that simple. Even if he is doing something wrong, we still can't force him to come here. It's one thing to stop him from doing something wrong. Something else to force him to do something right."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Jan 29, 2007, 11:19am

Chi says very softly, "Yeah….torture. No crime, no poverty, no suffering. Real torture…"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Kelly / Meisha ~ "Star / Muse" on Jan 29, 2007, 11:27am

Sephula

“It’s not that simple, Mike. These people were living far past what they wanted to. What they should have done. That was torture – they had peace and were without crime, but they were suffering. They were living under a madman whom they had to obey simply to live. How different is that from the dictators of history? Just because you have power, Mike, doesn’t mean you should use it, especially to ascertain dominance like this. That’s when people like Stryker begin to be justified.”

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Dillon "Time-Hopper" Drummond on Jan 29, 2007, 11:30am

"What's wrong with acertaining dominance if you're only trying to protect people not only from the world's ills, but also each other!" I scream in response at Sephula.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 11:32am

Scott stares at Dillan.

"Mr. Drummond, have you listened to anything Professor Xavier has ever said? Like, ever?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Last Hero on Jan 29, 2007, 11:33am

Sephula and Mike are going at it pretty hard…a little too philosophical for my tastes. I turn back Cyclops. "So where is this Stryker guy now, anyway?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Kelly / Meisha ~ "Star / Muse" on Jan 29, 2007, 11:33am

Sephula

Taken by surprise by Dillan, I rubbed my ears, trying to clear out the ringing in my ears.

“Paved with, Dillan.”

Kelly

“Why does everything here become an argument so quickly?”

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 11:35am

Scott smiles at Zephyr.

"I thought you weren't interested in coming."

He pauses for a moment.

"Upstate New York, conveniently enough. He was imprisoned in New York State for murder, and his parole ensures he stays in New York State."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Dillon "Time-Hopper" Drummond on Jan 29, 2007, 11:37am

I glare at Cyclops.

"I have and I find myself starting to disagree! Yes, I fully understand the moral implications of forcing your will upon others, but just imagine a world where super-jerks like Dr. Doom and Magneto were removed of their evil tendencies by the Professor! Or a military force made up of super-humans acting in our countries best intrests instead of just putting out fires and beating up Sandman!"

I turn to Sephula.

"Aren't good intentions enough?"

"I'm not coming. But it helps to know where you guys are in case you get dragged into a time-warp or something while I'm out. Covering my bases."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation

I wave to Kelly, trying to keep her calm. "Don't let them bug you too much with the arguing. Boy thing. They'll forget about it in ten minutes, tops."

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 11:40am

"Dillan…"

Cyclops paused and considered.

"Everyone has a different opinion of right and wrong. Let's say Xavier was a born again Christian who thought everyone should praise Jesus to solve problems. Would it be okay to just mentally convert everyone? And both Doom and Magneto have done good works. It's important that they make the choice themselves."

I don't bother continuing my arguement with Cyclops (or Sephula for that matter) When you bring religion into discussions like this things become skewed due to it's sheer illogicality.

"Whatever." I mumble. Guess he's another one I can't count on….but Mike…

Post by Wreck on Jan 29, 2007, 11:49am

"Dictators are bad," Wreck says. He still looks ridiculously sleepless, but at the very least, he's showered. "No matter how righteous they may think they are, it always comes down to 'my will being better than your will'. And none of them can ever put their ego aside to allow for middle ground."

He pauses.

"…..why am I talking?"

"Don't worry about it so much. When it's crunch time, they'll come together. You'll see."

I bend back in my seat, looking over to Marisol…a little worried about leaving her for the mission. From the sound of things it won't be too intense, and if there's stealth involved, she'll have a chance to shine…just wish I could be there to see it.

«There will be a sexy fast forward at noon, which will get into the meat and potatoes of the mission.»

Cyclops moves the crappy slide projector aside, and gets out some bizarre looking technological thing that looks like an Etch a Sketch, only black. He sets it down on the desk.

"Since Curt was kind enough to ask, quick mission overview."

He twists one of the knobs, and a 3D holographic topographical map appears above the screen.

"Gotta love Shi'ar technology. Anyway, William Stryker is currently residing here…"

He twists the other knob, and the map closes in to an area of Western New York.

"…in a small farming community called Mayville. He has purchased a small farm that had been unused for about twenty years, and has been renovating it. That's all we officially know."

"Good, Lex. Added some of the ethical topics in."

He makes a note in a ledger book on the desk.

"Mission parameters. Our primary mission is to discover what he's doing. It could be he's just decided to start farming, and sequestering himself from all the things that happened before. It's possible he's got a barn full of Purifiers. We don't, and can't, know. So we have to be ready for absolutely anything."

"Our secondary mission is to see if he will come here for Gerald. Remember, no tricks, and no force. It has to be purely voluntary." He looks at Dillan and Zephyr for a moment after saying this.

I give Kelly a thumbs up, wave to Kidd, and give Marisol a quick kiss on the forehead as I pass, whispering her way. "Watch yourself, all right? Take care. I'll be back around dinner, bring you something nice with me."

I head to the door, open it and…Roxanne's standing right there, jumping back, startled. "Hey squirt." I smile and brush past her.

"There are ways to get information without snooping around his property. There's an entire town worth of resources. People talk in small towns. It's an easy way to get information. Just listen. I know that's a foreign concept to most of you, but it works incredibly well."

Cyclops pauses.

"We're not intending to do anything illegal. Just looking into the matter, and approaching him overtly to ask for help when the time comes. And X-Factor has much larger fish to fry right now."

He looks at Chi.

"Of course we have the right to self-defense. But make sure it actually is self-defense first."

And then he looks at Zephyr leaving, and makes a note in the ledger.

"More chicks..I could definitely learn to like this" he thinks to himself. A grin spreading across his face.

"So umm when do we leave….are we breaking up into squads? Assigning field leaders? "

Having not been on the last few missions, Curt was obviously anxious.

My, I feel…chipper. Had the greatest dream last night, and now I'm glad to hear that there's a chance to help him. Just feel…upbeat, I don't know. Hard to really say.

"Hey guys!" I walk in, waving to Kidd and taking a seat behind Kelly, trying to get in between the two. "I was kind of listening into things…is it okay if I tag along? I know I haven't been on a mission in a while, but I've kept pretty sharp with Power Pack."

Somewhat embarassed by being caught leering…Curt turns towards Roxxy "Hey Roxxy…long time no see!"

Curt then sneaks a sideways glance to see if Kidd is still looking at him….

Chi looks at Roxie and smiles. He didn't know her very well, but she seemed nice enough when he talked to her during the holidays. He had been surprised that there was someone so young and small on the New Mutants, but when she showed him her powers, he understood immediately. Her golem was able to drop his force field seemingly without even really trying.

"Look out, it's Princess Powerful…or should be just call you Bruiser?"

Roxie sat roughly as ‘in-the-middle’ between me and Kidd as she could. That made it hard to talk to her. Sadly, I turned away and back to Dillan.

"Of course, Roxanne," replies Cyclops. "We'd be glad to have you."

Then, he addresses Curt's questions.

"I leave the actual operation of the mission up to the New Mutants, unless you do something stupid. If I take over, it will be because you have failed in some capacity. This should be understood. And when I take over…er, if I take over, you must listen to me unquestioningly. Last time we ran into the Reverend, he captured me and…well, let's just say I don't intend to physically see him until the threat level has been ascertained, and even then, you guys are taking lead. Unless, like I said…"

Later that day, the X-Jet touches down outside Mayville. It's the prototypical one horse town that used to be a two horse town…it bears some surface similarities to Rose Heights, except that it actually appears on maps and doesn't have Sentinels.

Cyclops ushers everyone off the jet. "So, here we are. What do we do?"

I start feeling around with powers, trying to get a general idea of what's going in the area. It's not enough to pick up anything specific, but it should tell me how many people around and give me a heads up if anything big's hiding.

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 1:47pm

Chi, Kelly, and Lex

From a distance of about a mile away, airborne, it's obvious that there are a lot of people on the farm. Many vehicles are parked in the driveways. Upon walking closer, there is a large sign in front of a standard old style farmhouse. The sign says, "Welcome to Salvation Farms."

There are dozens of people on the property, even a small tent village behind the house. Most of them are some distance away, and clearly doing farm work. It strikes Chi as odd that he sees someone with crab-like pincers for hands working on the fences near the barn (behind the house and tent village).

Everyone else

The town of Mayville has a feed store, a small truck stop/restaurant, a drug store, a grocery store, and a bowling alley. As far as obviously open establishments go.

Bowling Alley:

Even with New York State's strict anti-smoking laws, this place still smells like an ashtray. It's hard to decide if it's residual, or if people still sneak a smoke now and then. There is a group of teenagers, uniformly white, at a couple of the lanes. They stare openly at Dillan.

The mullet guy seems astonished.

"Come on, it was just a joke man. You better put that shit away, the sheriff's bound to show up any minute."

The girl comes back with tea, and sets a cup before everyone. It seems to be a home brewed green tea of some variety.

"Do you have questions?"

Farm:

"Kidnapped?"

The girl looks sadly into her tea cup, then takes a long sip.

"No. And I think I can answer both of your questions. I was born with the X sin. My family was very poor, and I found out I could make things appear. But they didn't last long. My mother was sick, and my father couldn't work, and I did something sinful. Against God, and I used my X sin to do it. I made some money, and I paid for food with it. But the money disappeared. And the people, they…they well, the men…they knew I had defrauded them. I was…punished. And I realized how sinful I was."

She stares into the tea again.

"The Reverend has helped me to find salvation. Even I can find salvation here. You can, too."

He looks at the three of them.

"All the same, I'd appreciate you letting me know why people are all riled up about you. And no jokey jokes. I can't stand jokey jokers."

Farm:

Amelia starts to say something in response to Lex, but is interrupted by the sound of the back door opening and closing.

"The Reverend will see you now!" she beams. It's the happiest she's looked so far. "He will explain your sin to you."

In walks an older man, very stately, wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Looking stately like that isn't easy, but he does it. He practically exudes charisma.

"Thank you, Amelia," he says to his assistant. "I am the Reverend William Stryker," he says to the guests. "Welcome to Salvation."

He spreads his hands slightly upon saying it, then seats himself at the table. Amelia looks completely star struck.

That doesn't matter. Chinese are humans, just like I am a human. She, however, was also marked with the X sin. Through no fault of her own, she came into being bearing the mark of mankind's science and evolution theories, abominations to God, present within her. She seeks salvation, and Jesus will asbolve her, if she works hard on her path. I must work hard on my path, as well, as the shepherd of those with the X sin."

I shrugged her hand off of my shoulder. “Beliefs are one thing. Telling an entire race- species- whatever, of people that they’re abominations? Monsters in God’s eyes?” I looked at the Reverend again. “I don’t know what God you believe in, but neither Yahweh or Allah are that sort of God!”

I looked back at Kidd.

“Not going to happen.”

The Reverend looks at Kelly almost sympathetically. "Sometimes, it hurts to hear the truth, Ms. Thorley. God's word has been resisted by many over the centuries. I know it is difficult to hear this. But you must believe me. I can help you, and your friends, find salvation. God still holds out hope for you, and one day, if you work hard and pray hard, God may forgive you."

He pulls out a simple wooden cross.

"I will pray for your salvation."

Then, he turns to Lex.

"I don't know what to tell you, Alexander. I have no children. My wife died in a horrible accident when she was pregnant, and I have had no desire to find another mate."

“What, you mean Sodom and Gomorrah? Not that I believe in that, but that was because of their actions rather than what they did. And that was before Christ, and the promise of a merciful God.”

Back to the Reverend.

"So my sin is being born?"

He stands as Lex stands.

"You don't have to leave, Alexander. You are welcome to stay and observe, without converting. I believe strongly that if you see the good I have done here, you will reconsider your feelings."

Then, finally, he turns sadly to Chi.

"Gerald is my father's name. If my wife had delivered, that would have been our son's name. But she passed away in an accident, and my son too. It is a painful memory that I do not wish to discuss further."

Bowling alley:

The sheriff sighs.

"At the very least, let me escort you out of this place to make sure there's no further trouble."

He adds under his breath:

"To you, not caused by you."

The sheriff walks to the door and holds it open.

The door to the drugstore opens, and an older woman stands, holding the door open, glaring at Courtney. She says, "First, you do business with them, now you hang out with them?"

"Fine, fine!" Courtney yells, and chucks her keys at her mom. "Be a little neo nazi just like everyone else in this «commentary deleted for extreme expletives» town!"

My eyes widen with every word that Wreck says; it just…I can't believe that someone like Gerald would come from someone who could do that. It doesn't make any sense, not a bit, and if I was anxious to see this guy before, I'm ten times as much now.

I shake my head, looking up to him. "This is…we can talk to them, I think. I'm sure if we make them see what a jerk he is, they'll leave him and come to the mansion with us. Everything'll be all right. They'll come with us, Stryker will come to, and it'll work out." I nod, wishing I felt as confident as I was trying to sound.

«Recap: Cyclops has sent the team to investigate William Stryker, with the hopes of getting him to come to the mansion because it might help Gerald, but the primary goal is to figure out what his deal is. Chi, Lex, Kelly, and Kid went to a farm that the Reverend was running, turns out, his new religion is telling mutants to hate themselves. They had an encounter with him, he denied having a son, and his helper, a girl named Amelia, gave them a tour. Kelly was stressing out about the whole thing, tempers flared, and Amelia used her powers to create a sword to retaliate against Lex, then broke down crying about how she sinned. Marisol was supposed to go with them, camouflaged as an item or something, so put her there.

Meanwhile, Curt, Dill, and Sephula met the town's sheriff at the bowling alley, who implied things about Stryker.

Then, Roxy and Wreck went to the drug store, encountered bigotry, and befriended a teenage girl who accepted them, but lost her job and got harangued by her mother about it. She told them the basics of what Stryker's up to, and Roxanne wants to go bust the place up. Put Almond here.»

Marisol felt conflicted.

On one hand, she REALLY wanted to, for instance, comfort Amelia. And on another hand, she really didn't. It would be awkward, and lose her cover. Farm:

Ignoring Kelly for the eight billionth time, Stryker rounds on Lex.

"Do you know what you've done? You shouldn't upset her. She's very fragile. Look at her."

Amelia is still sobbing and quietly repeating nonsense, frequently including "salvation".

Stryker continues, "When she came her, she could barely speak, she had been so traumatized by the things the x sin had done to her. We've made so much progress, and you come in and…"

He sighs, and walks over to Amelia.

"Amelia, honey, why don't you go have quiet reflection time? I'll take the guests from here."

I know you are a sinner. I don't need to listen to your recriminations. You should pull the plank out of your eye before you comment on the speck in mine."

Then, seriously, he turns to Lex.

"You're confused. That's normal. You might think your X sin is normal, even acceptable. You might think it's something that doesn't need to be forgiven. But if you look at yourself closely enough, you will see that you need salvation."

Then, he nods to Lex. "Very well, Alexander. We'll go back in the house for a moment, and your quickly increasing entourage can wait there. There's something I should show you in the house, anyway. Unless Amelia already did?"

Drug store:

"You can't be serious," mutters Courtney. She looks to Roxanne and Almond. "Is he?"

Without waiting for a response, she says, "Alright then, let's go. It's not too far."

Once we're all on, I take off and bring us over the little town, following Courtney's direction, but I stop when we come over the farm - I don't know, I guess I was kind of hoping Courtney was mistaken. It's hard to believe one guy could get so many people to work for him like this, just by talking…even from up here, I can tell that they're not too happy.

"What now?" I turn to Wreck and Courtney, hoping for a clue. "Do you want to go down and talk to them or…what?"

Re: New Mutants 112 - Salvation
Post by Gerald Stryker on Jan 29, 2007, 11:18pm

Farm:

The Reverend opens a door, and ascends stairs to the second floor. Most of the walls have been torn out of the second floor, making a large open area with lots of sunlight. There are about twenty full hospital beds on the floor, and a staff of five medical professionals working.

The Reverend waves his hand around. "We have been ministering to those dying of the so-called mutant plague here. We ease their suffering, and allow them to come to peace with their savior in a place that cares for them. None of these mutants are insured. If they were not here, they would be dying in a cardboard box on the street. We have taken them in, and donations have allowed us a modest medical staff to care for them on a hospice basis. Your friend would be welcome here, of course."

And it's more or less as he says. The people working seem to be doing what they can, and the people in beds seem to be in bad shape, but cared for.

Farmhouse, second floor:

The Reverend looks at Kidd.

"Bad? I am not a bad person. I have learned from my mistakes. I was in prison, true, and rightfully so, but while I was there, the Lord spoke to me, and illuminated my new path…to shepherd the sinners. These sinners," he indicates the room with a sweep of his hand, "are dying, and, like Jesus, I will tend to the infirm, hoping to show them the light so that they may be accepted into Heaven's kingdom when they expire. So that they may have salvation. I personally pray with each one of them, every night. What they're going through is very difficult, cursed by God not once but twice. For instance, he knows that bodily fluids will spread the virus, blood, semen, saliva. But that is not the only way it spreads, and is in fact not even the most common way. Apparently, there is a particular chromosome pairing that makes mutants more susceptible to the plague…Dr. Jorgenssen may be able to explain it all to you later, but it is best not to disturb him while he works."

"Amelia Chow…secretary…make appointments. Amelia Chow not available. Reverend is busy man, do good works."

Farmhouse:
