New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 9:39am

The Mansion is reconstructed. Finally.

It took some hard work, but things are up and running again…actually, rewind, it wasn't that hard at all. It's been done enough that they've got rebuilding the Mansion down to science.

Rogue stood on the front lawn in the early morning, just admiring the work and downing a glass of orange juice. It's been a busy past few weeks - the Hellions, Mephisto, whatever happened with those weird two weeks - but it looks like things are finally calming down.

"Excuse?" A tiny voice grabs Rogue's attention and she turns around, seeing a tiny boy to go along with it. Eight years old, tops. "Are you Rogue? I need to speak with you for a moment."

~*~

The New Mutants are called into the newly reformed and refurbished Wreck Room for a meeting, and as they pour into, they notice everything looks about as good as they remember. Same chairs. Same little mini-fridge. Same floor. Oh, but that little boy sitting on the couch, that's new.

[Just general interaction with the kid, if you please. I'll start things proper in an hour or so.]

"Good question." Zephyr steps in yawning; as usual, he'd been in the middle of the nicest nap when the call came. "Never seen him before."

"I can hear you, you know." The boy looks their way, a blank, listless stare on his face. "My name is Trenton Fairway."

"That name mean anything to anyone here?" I asked, looking around.

"So… what're you doing here?"

"You'll find out when Ms. Rogue comes back. It's a lot to explain. Wait."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Damien Lupe on Jan 15, 2007, 10:00am

"Ms. Rogue. Hunh. I thought I was the only one who called her that." I turned to look at Zephyr.

"So, what do you think we were called here for? It can't be just to babysit the kid til she gets back."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 10:05am

Zephyr stares at the kid for a moment, watches as he looks out into blank space. Silent. Creepy. "Doubt it's that simple." He plops down on the couch, fiddling through a magazine. "Just wait till the others show up, maybe they'll know something."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Wreck on Jan 15, 2007, 10:07am

Wreck more or less stumbles into the room, his sunglasses barely hanging on to his face. He slumps into a chair.

"….please tell me I'm not hallucinating random kids now."

Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 10:13am

"My name is Trent." He looks Wreck's way, mumbling a few things under his breath, something about a 'bad man'…it's weird, but not quite as weird as what the kid is wearing: He looks like something out of an episode of Leave it to Beaver. 50's style all the way.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Dillon "Time-Hopper" Drummond on Jan 15, 2007, 10:38am

I waltz into the Wreck room, yawning. Can't help it, I didn't get a lot of sleep. Some weird kid's sitting in the Wreck room. This isn't going to be good.

"I hope to God you're not one of our kids from the future."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 10:40am

"Uh…no, no I'm not." Trent brings out his first real sign of emotion, looking confused. Dillan is a bit confused himself, honestly. That itching feeling he gets whenever someone is walking out of synch with time around him? That itch is all over Trent. It's like he's made of it. Very weird.

Marisol observed the kid quietly and sat down next to him. She looked surprisingly relaxed…

"Hello, Trent. How old are you?"

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Dillon "Time-Hopper" Drummond on Jan 15, 2007, 10:44am

Damn. This kid isn't normal.

"So Trent." I say, very calmly, getting as close to the kid as I can. I figure if I get close enough I can maybe…well I don't know what I can do, but it's gotta be something. This kid is a walking tesseract-at least I think tesseract is the right word. God damn you Madeline De Engle.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life

"Eight." He says it quick, looking away from her as he does. "Marisol, Wreck, Zephyr, Dillan, Sephula…I got all your names right, didn't I?"

That get Zephyr's attention. "Yeah, but how-"

"It's my power. Telepath. Sort of."

"Huh."

I always get edgy around telepaths. Even more so if I don't know them. Part of the reason I never hang around Stryker for too long.

"Been looking in our heads, have you? Trust me, that's not something you want to do."

"Actually, it's not something I mean to do. It's kind of automatic. Information just pops up into my head, but it's usually only basic stuff. No worries."

He looks Marisol's way and gives a weak smile. "Thanks. You're nice." And he looks Dillan's way the next moment. "Is something wrong, Dillan?"

"No, no. Nothing wrong at all." Kid was dumb, he'd notice that I was getting closer and closer to him. What the hell, even the air around Trent didn't feel as if it belonged in the same time period as the rest of the air in the mansion.

"So Trent, tell us about yourself. Where do you come from?"

Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 11:29am

Professor Xavier and Rogue throw a few strange glances Dillan's way, not quite sure what he's getting at. Might be better not to ask.

"Hello, Trent." Professor X turns to Trent, glancing Dillan's way out the side of his eye. "My name is Professor Charles Xavier. This is my school, as I'm sure you're well aware. Now, I've heard your story, and I'm sure the New Mutants will agree to help with your request once more of them arrive, but in the meantime, I'm curious about a few things, namely this town you hail from: We searched, and while there seems to be a Peaksville, Ohio, we can't seem to find it anywhere."

"That's not a problem, I can direct you there easily enough." Trent nods, sounding sure of himself. "It's there, believe me."

Rogue shrugs. "It ain't that weird, Seph. Country's full of little back alley towns nobody knows about. I can say from experience."

Professor X nods. "And I have already given his mind enough inspection to verify his claims. He does hail from a place called Peaksville, Ohio, and his town is being 'attacked' by, of all people, Batroc the Leaper."

Trent waves toward Lex as he enters, even though it goes unnoticed. "Hello, Lex."

"Trent, word of warning, you might want to stop that." There's a little nervousness in Rogue's voice, understandable. "Just wait till somebody tells you their name before you call them."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Dillon "Time-Hopper" Drummond on Jan 15, 2007, 12:32pm

I sigh.

"You don't get it do you? When things are out of phase with time, they generally can't interact with things that aren't. Plus, eight year olds generally don't fall out of sync with an entire dimensional plane of time and existence. Something weird is going on."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 12:36pm

"I don't doubt your expertise on the subject, Dillan, though I would like to talk with you about these forays you and Lex have been taking." Professor X doesn't sound too pleased, but he goes on. "However, Trent is plainly here, despite the anomaly about him. The only thing that disputes his claim is your hunch. That merits caution, but it's not concrete."

Jubilee walks into the room holding Lex's jacket. Upon seeing Lex sleeping she hands it to Marisol. "Could you give this to Lex when he wakes up? He left it in my room."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 15, 2007, 1:24pm

Trent just shakes his head. "I'm not a baby…"

"Indeed." Xavier adds on, making his way to the center of the room. "Trent's quite a brave little man. Using his abilities, he traveled all the way here." Professor X closes his eyes and forms his hands into a triangle, going for a moment of brief thought. "The overall situation is this: It would seem that Batroc the Leaper is using Peaksville as a base of sorts, hoping that the town's anonymity will provide him cover. In this effort, he's commandeered a few houses belonging to the town's prominent members, and is using threats to cut the town off from the rest of the world. However, he's very poorly armed; going by Trent's memory, there's only him and handful of mercenaries working alongside. Knowing the character, it's doubtful any of the mercenaries are of considerable skill."

Marisol simply nodded. She didn't want to think about why the jacket would have been in Jubilee's room, but folded it together neatly.

The Professor lets silence reign for a moment, expecting some comments, but, really, there's none to give. It's simple enough: Find the idiot, save the town. There was obviously something odd about - the New Mutants wouldn't be going alone, even if they didn't realize it- but it did seem cut and dry.

"If no one has any concerns, you'll be heading out at-"

"Actually, Professor, I have one concern." Trent raises his hand, sheepish, eyes darting across the room. "See, I haven't gotten anything to eat since I escaped. A burger or something would be nice."

"Fair enough." He looks to others, taking stock of the present New Mutants. "All of you, take Trent to get something to eat, but be brisk about it; there's no need to drag this mission out any longer than need be. I'll brief the others on the situation as they come in."

"Ah, man." Zephyr sighs, standing up and moving beside Marisol. "Ended up babysitting after all."

Rogue follows Professor X's lead and takes a seat, waiting for the others. "No sense in breaking out the jet for this. Zephyr?"

"We could always just hoof it."

Pester was getting impatient. He wanted food, real food. Not the high protein low fat health pellets the Professor is always cramming into the fridge. And Pester knew he could only steal Jubilee's ice cream for so long until she finally caught him.

[After Mini-Mission 1, of course…]

Wreck, Marisol, Zephyr, Lex, Pester, Sephula and the mystery boy, Trent, all return to the mansion, looking much, much more haggard than when they first left. They make their way back into the Wreck Room, where Rogue is waiting. "What took y'all so long? We had enough time to get the jet ready and everything."

"Complications were encountered, addressed, and overcame." Zephyr plops down on the couch, sighing.

Wreck glances over at Trent. He looks about to say something, then shuts his mouth.

Then, as usual, opens it again.

"Trent, what exactly was it that you did back there? With the 'no more hurt' and me suddenly feeling like I'd been dunked in Novocain."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 16, 2007, 11:14am

Trent looks at Wreck, like he actually forgot what he did for a moment. It comes soon enough. "Oh, that. That was my power again…see, my telepathic power works weird. I can kind of control the way my body feels just by thinking about it, so if I'm hurt, I just think about feeling better and…I feel better. If I'm curious what someone's name is, I look at them, and my power just sort of learns. The only real way I can control it is by physical contact, and it's sort of limited even then. Basically, I touched you, the nerves on my finger formed a network with your body, and we were linked. From there I just used the same powers I use to control the way my body feels and applied them to you."

[Alright, feel like now's a good time. Fast-forwarding a bit.]

After a little more berating from Rogue and a little more staring at Trent with worried looks, the gang boards the jet and takes off. Trent gives them little details along the way as he instructs them of the situation and the location of Peaksville; he's got an amazing sense of direction, leading them in a straight line most of the way.

"All right, let's see what we can see here…" Rogue starts to fiddle with a few of the jet's instruments, getting a reading of the area. Everything seems right enough, but…" She peers out the window. "Trent, is this area always so dried up?"

'Dried up' is a nice way to put it; for some reason, the land's been getting sparser and sparser with every mile they get towards their destination. Dead trees, burnt off cornfields; it looks the Heartland's all but died down there. "We're in the middle of a drought, is all."

Rogue nods, taking another glance as a herd of cows. A herd of dead cows. "Nasty drought."

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Pester/Freaktada on Jan 16, 2007, 11:45am

Pester should know better than to eat McDonald's food. His Whopper was starting to fight back, battling it's way through his stomach. Pester's esophagus was putting up a brave fight, sword and shield in hand with a song in it's heart, but knew it was just buying time. The mighty esophagus was outmatched, and knew it. There was no doubt about it: The esophagus was going to lose and suffer for it's trouble. Sure, the presence of esophagus would delay the vicious entity that was clawing it's way through Pester's torso, and yes, the esophagus was terrified. Knowing terror and overcoming it are two entirely different things, and the esophagus knew that if it didn't stand and fight it would live in shame for the rest of Pester's life.

Pester knew full well what he was asking of his esophagus. He didn't want to puke, but he had no illusions about what was happening to him. By this point he was mourning his soon to be defeated esophagus, which resided in the kingdom of his stomach. All was lost… But then hope appeared. As the battle raged on below his neck, he heard that there was one person in the room who could quell this battle raging inside him… and perhaps peace will reign once more. He turns to the boy:

"Can you do anything for an upset stomach?"

«That's my excuse that Pester's not going to be online much today. I've got things to do, and he's got a stomachache.»

The ship starts to rock back and forth, pounding over and over and over again, as if someone's punching their way through. Alarms are blaring, the ship starts to careen downwards, and in a flash the cause of it passes by the window: Namor, The Sub-Mariner.

Trent's looking seriously worried, and while all the New Mutants do have valid points - it is extremely weird for the Sub-Mariner to be in Ohio of all place, much less attacking them - it doesn't erase the fact that he IS tearing the ship apart piece by piece.

"I'm taking her down!" And down Rogue takes her; the scenery spins around, the engines roar and the jet once again winds up crashing, the sound of crushed earth roaring all around, they come to a slow, and less then grateful stop after a moment, engulfed in darkness as the emergency lights flicker on. "Everyone alright?"

You'd think Wreck would have a serious point; after all, they are sitting ducks, and this has happened before. By all rights, a pissed off Namor should be ripping the ship in two right now.

But it's not happening.

Still, Trent agrees. "We need to go, now. Right now." He gets up and heads for the back hatch, surprisingly cool about the whole situation.

When Chi and the others make their way out of the jet, there's no sign of Namor, anywhere. He's gone, but they find themselves in the middle of a rather quaint, quiet town…or, at least, it was until they crashed their jet in the middle of it. The first thing they notice is that the town has a rather old-timey look to it; the cars only look a few generations removed from the Model T, picket fences line almost every house, and as the inhabitants start to pour out, images of Happy Days come to mind. It's like the Fonz could pop up at any minute.

Trent runs out, facing the townspeople as they start to gather. "Everyone, look, I found-"

Before Trent can even finish, a woman steps out of the crowd and slaps him across the face. "What were you thinking bringing people like them here?! Do you have any idea what he'll do when-"

"But I thought…" Trent steps back, rubbing his face, crying. "They could help. I think they can…"

"Kid?" The woman laughs, but it's a nervous one. "Firstly, I'm his mother. Secondly, he's not a child. He's 56."

"54, mom." Trent keeps looking to the sky, like he's expecting someone or something to appear at any minute. "We really need to go and hide someplace…didn't think he'd actually see us coming in…"

"Hide from what?" Zephyr comes out and stands beside Marisol, just as confused as the others. "What's going on here? Tell it straight."

"Get your hands off me!" Trent slaps the boy's hand away. "These people, these guys are going-"

Timmy's been watching the whole display. He does not seem pleased.

"I try to be understanding, I try to get people to think good thoughts, but some fellas just don't get it." He shakes his head and Incubus start to rise off the ground, a faint white light covering him. "You're taking a timeout, mister."

Incubus is gone. Just like that.

Timmy turns to the New Mutants again, focusing on Heatwave. "Here's the deal, you guys. I run this town. Everyone does what I say. Everyone is happy. If you're not happy and you don't think good thoughts, you go to the cornfield. Understand?"

"They're not real," she repeated after turning to face Timmy, "How do you think I know this?"

She began morphing. It was easier because of the costume. Only a small part of the face was visible. After a few seconds, she looked just as gleaming as the faux-Invaders… Her voice was still a problem, as she could only make it manly and heroic, but she hoped for the best. Serious look, straight back and…

Captain America raises his shield high, as the Invader's form up around him. "You heard the man, Invaders. Take them out!"

The Invaders move into action, intending open up a 50-year-old can of whupass on the New Mutants.

Rogue and the Sub-Mariner meet in mid-air and start slugging it out, rising higher and higher with every blow.

The Human Torch makes a move for Wreck, raining down fireball upon fireball.

The Whizzer tackles Marisol whiles she's still disguised as Captain America, buffeting her with a flurry of punches.

Marisol's trick works; Whizzer has to pull back after a fairly hard punch in the face, so hard it broke through his gloves and got blood. Switching tactics, he picks Marisol and runs with her at high speed, throwing her through a babershop window down the street and speeding back into the melee.

Marisol decided to give up on the Captain America disguise. It hadn't even achieved the measly effect she had been hoping for… She didn't know what the effect was, but it hadn't been achieved.

By the time she got back onto the streets, she looked quite different. She was vaguely four-legged, with an elongated, streamlines body and a big head. And claws, of course. And half a dozen tentacles. She had taken the inspiration of the creature from the book Zephyr had given her for Christmas. Of course, it really ruined her hopes for convincing Timmy…

She jumped back towards Whizzer. Naturally, she wasn't fast enough to catch him directly, but maybe her tentacles could get him.

Nevermore doesn't want to risk having Timmy panicwith someone this powerful that sounds like a bad idea. Whizzer was too fast to make eye contact with, and he wasn't confident enough in his power boost* to try and use it. So he goes for who he perceives as the most dangerous of the groupThe Human Torch.

"Hey, Torchie, I know you're a robot and all, but I'm sure there's something you're afraid of." He tries to make eye contact with the android, and channels the sensation of pure, fight-or-flight (hopefully flight) panic.

«*Power Boost? Um, yeah, the fic'll be up soon. I promise.»

Dillan's attack catches Union Jack by surprise, and the teeny-wheeny sword gets lodged in his shoulder…but, really, that just pisses Union Jack off. And the 'poodle' comment doesn't help. Dillan gets a hard punch in the face; not enough to knock him out, but it decks him flat on his back. Fortunately, it buys enough time for Chi's dirt throw to work, and Union Jack is temporarily blinded.

Wreck's teleport attack works, but it doesn't have a very nice effect: Human Torch is an android, and the teleport causes his power source to screw up in a big way. He explodes, and Wreck is incinerated along with, scattered to pieces across the battlefield. Nevermore, who was a little too close to the explosion, gets knocked over to the side.

Sephula just manages to grab hold of the Whizzer and slow him down, when a well-placed shot from Cap's shield knocks him off. Turns out Cap's been holding back on purpose, watching the enemy and lending support from the sides. However, the Whizzer is slowed down enough for Marisol to grab hold of him. Whizzer's momentum is maddening though, and he yanks her clean off the ground, dragging her.

Heatwave's attack works…sort of. When Timmy gets heated up, the entire area seems to have the same effect; because his mind thinks that other things are getting heated up, his reality warping powers are making it true. Nevertheless, it's an easy enough thing to reverse, and the area goes back to normal when Timmy wills it.

Trent sees this on the sidelines, and gets a bit of idea, heading over to the downed Nevermore and helping him. "You're Nevermore, right? I think I have an idea, but I need your help."

Marisol inadvertently let out a shrill hissing sound…
She had a grip, but the Whizzer was simply too fast to let her enclose her well, or to properly stop her. She held on firmer and tried to drag him to a stop, dragging up the ground underneath her in the process.

Cap's shield hurt like a bitch, so, grounded, I try what's now my standard tactic. I try and throw Whizzer off balance by trying to screw up his nerve signals. Hopefully Marisol can take advantage.

Whizzer keeps going, but Marisol and Sephula's combined strike has him at a standstill; he's moving forward, but barely, basically at walking speed as he Marisol tugs.

Nevermore carefully brings himself to his feet. He's got one heck of a headache, and he tries to focus. After he pulls himself together, he locks in on the target nobody's been paying much attention to, Cap. He tries to sneak up behind Captain America, circling him to get a good look into his eyes. Once achieved, he conjures up the more frightful image he can acheive.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 16, 2007, 5:17pm

Marisol managed to knock the Whizzer off-balance with the sudden movement, and she lands on top of him. He's putting up quite a fight, though, generating much friction and heat, so if she has a plan, she should do it fast.

Nevermore's distraction works…sort of. From the looks of it, Captain America is beating the crap out of whatever Nevermore thought up. Or at least he thinks he is.

"Excuse me, Nevermore!" Trent comes at Nevermore from behind, still trying to get his attention. "Look, I need your help for something, okay?" He points Timmy's way. "Do you think you can use your power on him? Get close and make him see things?"

Marisol almost slithered right back off. The pain came as quite a shock.
For a moment, she considered smothering him, but that was by far too slow. It hurt… Her head morphed into something like a huge hammer, and struck Whizzer on the head. She retreated with a jump at almost the same moment.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life

Trent keeps at it. "I'm not asking you to hit him with anything serious, I just need to see something. We can't beat him like this; even if they beat the Invaders, Timmy'll just make new ones, or do worse. Please? Just try it."

The Whizzer's knocked out, and fades away a moment later, disappearing in a blink.

Marisol doesn't have time to relish in the victory, however, as Rogue comes crashing down into the street not far away, knocked unconscious in a crater with the Sub-Mariner drawing near. It would seem he was a little too much for her.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Dhaara "Naga" Falodiya on Jan 16, 2007, 5:28pm

Nevermore looks at Trent nervously. "Ok…there's something I think I can try."

Griffin swallows, and begins to run for Timmy. It's now or never, I guess…I have to field test this new trick sometime…

"Hey! You fascist prick!" Nevermore yells for Timmy. "Yeah, talking to you. Got some words for you!"

He clears his throat.

"O Rose, thou art sick." What? Poetry at a time like this?
"The invisible worm
That flies in the night
In the howling storm—"

Strangely, Nevermore seems to be controlling the image—a feat he's never displayed to his teammates before. A ghostly, serpentine image begins to surround Timmy, and it makes a noise that resembles both the hissing of a serpent and a stormy wind.

"He has found out thy bed
Of Crimson joy,
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy."

A cloud of darkness and lightning spins around with the serpent, angrily swirling around Timmy.

A strange thing happens with Nevermore's 'illusion': Timmy's power kick in and make it a real, breathing super-snake; because he believed it was real, it became real.

Unfortunately, since it's now real, that means it can be beaten up, and Namor sweeps in for the save, dragging the serpent away from Timmy and tossing it into the distance.

Union Jack gets the dirt out of his eyes just in time to see Dillan drawing a bead on him, and dodges a la Matrix to avoid…with the same results, as he gets shot in the leg and falls. However, Jack's got his own heat, and he fires off a shot as he goes down, hitting Dillan in the shoulder. Not a life threatening wound, but it hurts like mad, and he should look into getting it patched soon.

[Pulling a Reed on Namor won't work, as this the WWII era version of Namor. He hasn't met Reed yet.]

I don't even know what I'm doing now. The pain of my gunshot wound (heh. Guess I'm a real G now) has got me in a frenzy. I begin focusing on my mutant ability. I'd travel backwards in time, not get shot, and pop Union Jack in the kisser.

Not sure if this'll even work though. Most of the time's I've been back in time, I've been able to witness my younger self doing stuff, but the time I went back and saved Rogue from being shot, I was able to…I dunno, I guess do what Addison did. That time I was back in the body of my past self, affecting things. Would…could that happen this time?

[No, no, he was drawing a bead…it's like…aiming…>_< Nevermind.]

Sephula's strike isn't quite effective; it either has to do with his Atlantean biology, the fact that he's not really real, or his immense, but for some reason it's not too effective.

Dillan's time travel works a lot better, though. It's only a short jump, so he back in time, pops a very surprised Union Jack in the face at the right moment, ports back just in time to see that his shoulder's fine now…and that Union Jack has many more bullets, some of which he is currently firing. Running might be a good idea.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life

Marisol enlarged herself slightly, maybe to around She-Hulk size - big, but normal. Her hands extended themselves long tendrils, as she began moving towards the Sub-Mariner.

Namor was… ocean-dwelling, right? That probably meant she wouldn't be able to suffocate him by any stretch of the imagination. And he was also times stronger than she was, which meant she couldn't really harm him, either. That didn't seem very encouraging…
But… oh, well. She was pretty strong too, and could make her fists harder as they needed to be.

She charged and sent a simple elongated punch towards him, at the same time holding her other hand ready in case he evaded.

After what I did last time I'm not sure what to do…wait…Dillan said something a few weeks back. I'll try that.

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 16, 2007, 6:02pm

Marisol's attack hits Namor straight in the face, stuns him for a moment…then earns a look of pure rage. He flies into her with all the force of a torpedo, swinging madly at her rubbery form.

Dillan manages to get away from Union Jack, but a familiar red-gloved fist hits him from nowhere. He hits the ground, looks up, and sees none other than Captain America standing before him. "Stay down, son."

Lex starts to freeze up Timmy, but just like the incident with the snake proved, if Timmy thinks it's happening, it's happening. The entire environment starts to freeze up, and it'll probably be bad for a few of his teammates if he doesn't stop.

Namor's punches were having an almost calming effect. It felt great to know that somebody so strong was having next to no effect on her, even if the flurry of hits were somewhat confusing.
She was just thinking of doing something, when she noticed the cold. The intense freaking cold… At once, her entire body seemed to be aching and shivering, her vision went blurry and the hits felt much worse. Then she blacked out.

Dillan and Sephula have some guts facing Captain America hand to hand, but…well, this is Captain America. It's not happening. He counters both of Dillan's attacks, slaps the gun away, catches him in a judo throw and tosses him straight into the approaching Sephula, knocking them both down.

Meanwhile, Trent and Nevermore are still coming up with a plan. "Well, listen, everything he thinks is happening, happens, right? So if he thought he was bleeding to death or something like that…"

Lex takes too long, and Timmy starts to easily reverse the effect, bring the environment back to normal temperature. Worse yet, now Timmy's figured out the whole temperature thing isn't just some random thing he was feeling; he spots Heatwave and starts heading towards him. "You…I warned you not to think bad thoughts, didn't I?"

Instead of popping Heatwave into the cornfield, Timmy tries for something a little more creative; it seems this battle is bringing out the worst of him. He reaches into Lex's mind, sifting through his thoughts and bringing out the one person he'd least like to fight right before his eyes: Jubilee.

I knew that would happen. I knew that would happen, and somehow I was stupid enough to do it anyway. I mean, it's Captain freaking America.

Finally. I can boost again.

It's too cold to talk, so I just nod. It just occurs to me that this will be affecting some of us much more adversely. Dillan's delusional if he thinks a judo course, even from Cyclops, would give him a chance against Captain America. Boosting up to full strength, I grab Dillan and try to throw him at Timmy. I wonder what Colossus and Wolvering would think about this if they knew.

"You just don't listen, do you?" Lex gets knocked back as Jubilee punches him in the face, pretty damn hard for her size. "If I say it's real, it's real!"

Meanwhile, Sephula hurls Dillan towards Timmy, but they're fairly far off - whatever Dillan's got planned, there's a good chance Timmy will see it coming.

And finally, Trent and Nevermore are still talking it out. "Listen to me. The people of this town, me included, have been living in this hell for fifty damn years. We've been watching our thoughts every second. Most of us have insomnia, because we're too afraid to go to sleep. We've been eating nothing but health food. As I fly foward towards Timmy I can't help but think…will I one day wage a battle with my teammates like this? What Timmy's trying to do isn't so much different from what I've got in mind. We both just want to make things better for those around us but…no, I'm not like him. I won't fail, and they won't hate me for what I'll do.

I teleport, so that I'm still flying forward, but coming from behind Timmy, keeping my momentum. Go physics. All I've got to do is get to his head. If I can just jam one of my hands in my mouth I can wrap it all up. No more wasting time with his goons, gonna take down the big deal.

Dillan's punch hits Timmy dead on and knocks him clean out; he falls down, unconscious…but it doesn't look like it's going to last long.

Namor, Captain America, and Union Jack all freeze in place; Timmy was directly controlling them, so now that he's asleep, they're not receiving order…if there was ever a time to do something, that time would be now.

Trent has suggestions. "Kill him." He walks over to the group, motions towards Dillan. "Now, before he wakes up…kill him."

"There has to be another way. There has to…" His mind races, and then an idea dawns upon him. He takes a deep breath, and tries to remember the words exactly. "You can't keep this town chained, you can't. I won't let you…" He clears his throat and takes a deep breath, channeling the images the poem evokes as strong as he can.

"Prisoned on the watry shore
Starry Jealousy does keep my den,
Cold and hoar
Weeping o'er
I hear the father of ancient men."

He channels the image of the entire town, chained to Timmy's desires, and the chains all tied to Timmy, weighing him down.

"Selfish father of men,
Cruel, jealous selfish fear…"

He pauses, not quite remembering the words, he hangs on the image for a moment, frustrated…

"Can…delight
Chained in the night
The virgins of youth and morning bear?"

A ring of keys appears in Timmy's hand.

"Break this heavy chain
That does freeze my bones around;
Selfish! vain!
Eternal bane!
That free love with bondage bound!"

The chains yank and pull at Timmy, struggling to break free.

Chi's block is successful - at least, he keep Timmy from getting his brain's splattered. The bullet ricochet, however, and one of them clips Chi in the cheek, leaving a nasty gash.

Before they have a chance to dwell on it, Nevermore's 'attack' has a strange effect. Clouds start to part and the temperature rises slightly as an odd wind blows through. The ground starts to crack peel apart, the house begin to decay and crumble, even the air seems to be getting more stale - age is coming back to Peaksville.

The resident start to come out of hiding, and the aging effect can be seen on them as well. The only resident who isn't aging is Timmy, and wehn he comes to, slowly rises and sees the dishevel around him, the reaction is predictable."No…no! Why can't I stop it? Why can't I-"

"You lost your power, Timmy." Trent, wrinkles growing across his face by the second, points to Nevermore. "This guy has the power to take your powers away, and, well…he did."

"No, that can't be, that's-" Timmy looks around, sees his effects coming apart, and, for just a second, he believes Trent. One second is enough. The glimmer around his body disappears, Dillan can't sense the odd feeling of space distortion. He's taken his own powers.

Chi drops to his knees, yelping in pain. He tries to press his hand against his wound, but his forcefield gets in the way or him really putting pressure on it.

He looks at Heatwave with very sad eyes. "You guys are all crazy…" he mutters into his hand as he waits for his field to drop.

Chi nods at Lex, "Yeah, I know. But, there was no reason to shoot this poor bastard, either. If any of us had that kind of power…" Chi shrugs, "Doesn't matter. It's gone now. Yey for war, crime, and poverty."

[Trent doesn't heal anyone, he just make them feel better.]

As his last act, Trent touches Chi and takes the pain. It's just a flesh wound, so he'll be okay. And facial scars are trendy these days…

"I'm really sorry about lying to you guys, but I didn't see any other way to make you come." He looks back as some of the residents start turning to dust and blowing away, starting from the oldest and working down from their. Oddly enough, they all seem rather at peace with their fate, standing in disbelief. Except Timmy, of course.

"No, no, no, no…" He's on the ground, screaming his lungs out. "Just like Mom…they're all leaving me, just like Mom…please…"

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life

Chi semi-smirks at Lex, "Ack, I'm not exactly thrilled with the smell of burning flesh…especially when it's my own. I'll be fine…" Chi trails off as his field finally drops. "Took long enough!"

He walks away from Heatwave and looks around the now aging town. "A real shame…" he says very softly.

Chi nods at Lex. Chi looks sad, but still manages a slight smile at Lex, "You don't have to apologize to me, man…I am not the guy you tried to shoot!"

"I'm not pissed at being shot, I'm pissed because I don't want to believe that was the only answer we had here. We're still friends. Someone needs to be your moral compass!"

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life

Rogue stares at Lex for one moment and shakes her head the next. "Lex, you and me are having a long talk when we get back."

The effect is finally working its way to Trent; there are only a few children left to disappear, and he's the first one of them to go. "Thanks, again." He waves, smiling. "It was nice meeting you all, even for a little while. Always wanted to see the outside…tell Marisol I'm sorry about lying."

Gone.

After a few moments, every single resident of Peaksville vanishes from the street, leaving a cloud of dust in their wake and a weeping boy on the street.

"Just leave me alone, you jerk!" Timmy stands up and takes a swing at Wreck with all of his rage, all of his hatred…and it's utterly pathetic. Wreck barely even feels it. Considering Timmy's never even had to lift a finger in effort for fifty years, it's not surprising he's a little low muscle.

After all this, Pester feels like he's forgetting something. Something annoying something… abrasive… kind of like a pain he's gotten used to and doesn't feel right without it.

He turns to Rogue:

"Where Incubus?"

Re: New Mutants 111 - Living the Good Life
Post by Last Hero on Jan 17, 2007, 1:53pm

Timmy backs away, rubbing his knuckles. "You…I'll show you. I don't need powers, I-"

Rogue spins Timmy around and punches him in the gut, knocking him clean out. "Kid, I've had about enough of your mouth to last me a lifetime." She lays him down, sitting him beside Zephyr and Marisol as she looks at the jet. Namor may have been fake, but the damage he did was real enough. "It'll take me some time to fix it, might call in some help. I'm thinking we're pretty much done here, though."

Chi picks up a particularly twisted piece of metal. "Lex, can you bend this back to what it's supposed to look like? I think this is the landing gear…or it could be the door to the crapper…"
