Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Dec 19, 2006, 7:27am

Marisol was bored. There was still a lot of worry and anxiousness involved, but there was just nothing to do right now. She was sitting on the floor, with her back against the wall… if you could even call them that. She had drawn her knees to her chest and was staring emptily into space.

The worst part was that she had no idea how much time had passed. There was really nothing to go on, and it was all probably messed up in this bizarre universe anyway. The vote was still up on whether or not she thought she might have preferred Mephiso's yammering to being alone there.

She had to think about her teammates as well, naturally. Earlier, she had been pretty sure they'd all just pass through the "temptations" without trouble, but now she wasn't so sure anymore. It had been a ridiculous assumption anyway - she didn't really know her teammates enough to make a call like that. But they all seemed so… dysfunctional. Well, if not that, then at least problematic. They all seemed to have so much trouble, herself included. Was this the fate of all superheroes in this world?

She was afraid for Zephyr most of all. Sure, he seemed so happy-go-lucky most of the time, but… who knew? He could possibly want a whole host of things, which she was nervous about making guesses about. Whenever thoughts like that struck her, she chastised herself for not having enough faith in him. After all, he was probably doing the same thing as her - hanging around, being bored.

She hoped…

Voltage

"If you don't have a soul, then what's the problem? Sign it, get what you want, go home, never pay the price. Seems like a great deal, doesn't it?"

Dillan

"A…katana? Very well."

The contract appears. The basics:

Almond Quimby, alive and well, without a rapid aging effect. A katana. Return to Earth. In return, Dillan's soul when he dies.

Lex

He's back home with Jubilee. Jubilee seems really astonished to see him. "Where's, you know, everyone else?"

Reflex, Wreck, and Rogue

All left where they are, for now. And no, being able to touch people was not what Rogue was offered. The contract vanishes from Reflex's room, and he's now treated (?) to nothing but Celine Dion's "My Heart Must Go On", occasionally interrupted by the bad muzak version of "The Girl From Ipanema" whenever you start to get used to it.

Everyone else

Transported back to the dining hall, with Mephisto. Mephisto says, "I'm ironing out a few final details on a few final souls, but I must say that business worked out quite well for me today. I never would have imagined that this endeavor would have been quite so profitable. I would have been happy with just Strange."

He cackles, and disappears, to allow you to talk amongst yourselves.

"Okay…" I'm a little disorientated at first; one moment I'm in a drab darkness, the next I'm back in a drab dining hall. His words barely register, and I don't even notice the other until after he's gone. It takes a moment, but I straighten up and put my best face on; don't want to make it look like I had any trouble…even if I did.

"Well, that was fun." I see we're missing a few people, but I'm glad to see Marisol's not one of them. "What happened with you guys?"

[And, man, do I hate Celine Dion. >_< When I was young, my mother used to play her every day when she picked me up from school. One day I just broke down and snapped the casette; it was driving me insane.]

Marisol walked straight to Zephyr's side, handily ignoring everyone else.
"Did you hear what he said?" she asked worriedly, "Did someone actually… agree?"

It struck to her that this "someone" could have been standing right behind her at the very moment, but she didn't feel like being polite. At least it seemed like he had made it through all right.

"Nah, I bet they didn't cave; Mephisto's really lousy at this bit." Hoping I'm coming off as confident as I'm trying to be; I got the strong impression that Mephisto's going to do exactly what he'd said he'd do and spill the beans. I'll tell them about it first, though. Better they hear about it from my mouth.

Not now, though. Later.

"But you're okay, right?" My voice is low for once, trying to keep this private. "Mephisto he didn't, like…do anything to you, did he?"

The Main Group

A group of twisted souls come in, carrying a large roll-down film screen, the kind that would be used to show educational filmstrips in an elementary school. They take some time comically setting it up. There is some form of barrier between them and the New Mutants, preventing interference. A square of white light flashes around the room a little before settling dead center on the screen. A blurry slide pops up, which eventually comes into focus. It reads:

"How I Spent My Summer Vacation, by Zephyr"

Re: New Mutants 110 - Handbasket Express
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Dec 19, 2006, 10:43am

"Right on." That slight smile is all the answer I need; I'm tempted to ask what she was tempted with, but I figure it's not my place. "Sent him packing; knew you would. Now…" I look around, trying to find an exit, a door, a window, someway out of here. "Got be some way to get out…any ideas, anybody? I don't know if he's going to let us go or what."

And that's when the slide show comes up. Dinner and a movie.

"Ah, crap." He's going to pull that crap now? Right now?

Marisol glanced at the nervous Zephyr inquisitively.
"What's going on?" she asked with a forced sort of calmness, and looked at the movie screen.

Sephula stumbled over to a chair, and sat there, looking down, disappointed in himself. He looked up when he heard Marisol ask if anyone gave in, and shook himself.

No regrets. I did what I had to.

The Main Group

A sequence of slides begin to pop up, it might be best if Zephyr describes exactly what's going on. All of them are indicative of a dark past with Apocalypse, but every one of them is a still frame. There is narration provided, though…by Poseidon's voice, over a speaker.

I turn to Marisol, wishing I had a little more time to put this delicately. Wanted to wait until we were clear of this mess, but it looks like my hand's getting forced. "Okay, long story short, Mephisto didn't actually give me a deal, he sort of, kind of, threatened me. I did some…things when I was little, and they're not…" Running out of time, need to say what I have to say. "Whatever you see on that screen, it's not what I am anymore, understand?" I'm speaking to all of them, but looking at her. "It's me, but it's not me. I got over it a long time ago, okay?"

Marisol listened to Zephyr's hurried explanation quietly, and turned back towards the screen. He sounded panicked, but not half as panicked as she felt herself. Her thoughts were racing, and she felt a sudden need to run away… escape from this somehow, although she didn't even know what it was…

She had a very bad feeling about it.

Re: New Mutants 110 - Handbasket Express
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Dec 19, 2006, 11:26am

And then it starts. I hear Poseidon's voice, and the slides start to flip.

Slide 1: Two rows of children, about a dozen on each side. One side has children of various ages, sizes, and both genders that all look similar to Zephyr, the other side has the same with children who look similar to Poseidon. None of them are older than seven.

"A few years ago, Apocalypse was faced with a dilemma. By manipulating the DNA of various superhumans, he had created four kinds of clones, one for each element. Fire and Rock were sent out into the world and forced into harsh conditions, testing their ability to survive. However, he decided to keep two clones of the 'weaker' elements to himself, to train as representatives in his stead and willing followers. Heirs, if you would. However, for these clones, he still needed some way to determine their worthiness. And, to that end, he created many, when he only desired two."

Slide 2: All the Zephyr-ish clones standing in the middle of a massive, empty room, looking at each other feverishly. Some are snarling. Some actually have their teeth bared. They all have their fists clenched, and they all look like crazed animals, ready to pounce.

“To sift the weak from the strong, Apocalypse set these clones against one another in mortal combat.”

Slide 3, 4 and 5: The children fight, and fight, and fight; each slide getting bloodier and more gruesome. Necks are snaps, eyes are raked, about the worse stuff seen this side of a Punisher comic, and the worst part is that they’re all doing this with their bare hands.

“But, as Apocalypse had anticipated, the one to survive this battle would be different from the rest.”

Slide 6: A cyclone forms in the midst of the fray, picking up the survivors and the dead and launching them skyward…

“One who was gifted, who had the intuitiveness to discover his powers, the intuitiveness to use them in the heat of battle…”

…slamming them into the walls…

“…and the ruthlessness to survive.”

…ripping them limb from limb.

“This clone was the only one to exercise his powers and the only one of his group deemed worthy to join Apocalypse at his side. Alongside the survivor from the water group, they became scions of Apocalypse.”

Slide 7: He’s younger, he’s smaller, but there’s no question who’s standing in the middle of a field of corpses; covered in blood, not fazed in the least…

“He was, of course-”

“-me.”

Re: New Mutants 110 - Handbasket Express
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Dec 19, 2006, 11:50am

Marisol was shocked. The montage had lived up to her expectations: it had been horrible, it had been true and it had made things so much more difficult.

She just… couldn't…

It made sense, of course. The whole scenario was in concordance with Apocalypse's beliefs, she just never thought about it… Zephyr always seemed so, heh, normal, not like a twisted murderer. She liked him more than the rest of her teammates combined. She didn't want to believe it, but…

She just couldn't make herself feel angry.

She should have been terrified or disgusted or WHATEVER, but already she found herself feverishly trying to think of excuses and rationales. She wasn't sure if it was for him or for herself. He'd just been a child, programmed by a monster. He didn't know what he was doing, and he regretted it. It was all right, damnit! It had to be. Zephyr was the only one… the only one who wanted her, and she just couldn't - wouldn't! - push him away because of something like this. She needed him… and it wasn't like she was innocent, was it?

Marisol realized she had just been staring at the screen for a while. First of all, she looked at the rest. They all seemed predictably shocked and disheartened.
Then she turned around abruptly and grabbed Zephyr. Within a moment, she had dragged him into one of the corners of the room. She needed as much solitude as possible - a wall literally grew out of her back and hid them from the rest. It was pretty disgusting, she realized, but she couldn't bring herself to be self-conscious.

Of course, now that she was alone with him and looking him in the eye, she couldn't think of anything to say.

There's no more narration, but further slides of Zephyr's service to Apocalypse are shown. Most of them seem to be rather sedate, just showing Poseidon, Zephyr, and Pooky, but there's definitely an undercurrent of some form of relatively loyal service. This is accompanied by a bizarrely timed laugh track. Reflex appears in the room in the middle of this.

Reflex

All of a sudden, after what feels like hours of Celine Dion, you're back in the dining hall. Sephula, Marisol, Zephyr, Apath, and Pester are also here. There is a screen showing slides of Zephyr hanging out with Apocalypse, while a laugh track plays.

Re: New Mutants 110 - Handbasket Express
Post by Alexander "Cadmus" Baptiste on Dec 19, 2006, 3:28pm

Nadia had been off in her own little world, both literally when they were still separated and then figuratively once they had been brought back together. She had still been thinking about Greg and what Mephisto had shown her to try to persuade her to barter for her soul. And the final thing Greg said in one of the last clips was gnawing at her most of all.

What memories?

She had been in the midst of these ever repeating thoughts when the twisted excuses for souls, that she (and hopefully everyone else) had avoided one day becoming, brought in the screen. Then the massacre began to play. That snapped Nadia right out of her own funk. She didn't think that she had ever seen anything so brutal in her life (her previous train of thought reared it's ugly head as she briefly compared Zephyr's doings to her brother's). Nadia had never had that much stomach for the sight of blood. She was suddenly especially glad that she hadn't eaten before because she was certain that all of it would be coming right back up now.

The bloodiest of the stuff out of the way, the current scenes were just Zephyr and Poseidon hanging with Apocalypse. Nadia found a healthy (or unhealthy - it depends on how you want to look at it) amount of disgust for what she had seen of Zephyr's past. But what she had managed to find even more of, was anger towards their captor and his sense of humor. Bad enough they had to spend an indeterminable amount of time in Hell together. Mephisto trying to turn them against each other and split them into factions could only serve to make the stay more unbearable than it already was.

Nadia didn't blame Roxy for things Calamity did. Likewise she wasn't going to blame Zephyr for what he did under Apocalypse's thrall. The fact that he was still here after his tête à tête with Mephisto who could have given him anything he desired - including the way out - was proof enough that he had began to shake off his past.

Though Nadia refused to acknowledge the thought, it was possible that the reason she accepted Zephyr's past so readily, was that if she didn't believed in redemption for him then she couldn't believe in redemption for Greg either…

The Lex and Mike show

Storm glares at Lex. "You did NOT make a deal with Mephisto. I know you're not that impetuous. Are you?"

She seems to realize that you are, and shakes her head.

"Lex, if I were you, I'd go somewhere and seriously consider the decision you made. You realize that whatever it is you took, it wasn't worth the price, don't you? Look around. Where are your friends? Well, they aren't here…and you went to get one back. What you've done is let your own personal desires overcome your duty to your team."

Storm looks at Mike. "Something went wrong. Something went very wrong. However, I think Lex is here because Mephisto wanted to lure us in. Rogue can take care of herself for now. There are too many important things to do in this world to send more X-Men on this fool's mission."

Lex and Mike

"Superhero IN TRAINING." Storm emphasizes the last two words. "The fact of the matter is, Mephisto is a devious being, not to be trifled with, and I am not about to take a fresh recruit into his realm. I remember when Kitty tagged along when the X-Men battled Magneto many years ago…she nearly died. By the same token…I have no desire to see the New Mutants trapped in Mephisto's Realm."

She sighs.

"This is textbook Mephisto. Hard decisions, large risks either way. But what good could we do there?"

She thinks for a moment.

"I could try to contact Amanda Sefton. Beyond Dr. Strange, I think she would be the next most likely to be able to assist us."

Wreck and Rogue

Mephisto appears, and says, "Now, I'd like to let you both out of this room. Especially since Rogue has won the wager. However, the deal with Sephula takes precedence…please enjoy the company for the next three days. Also, I should mention that young Lex's confidentiality clause may be considered breached if a discussion is engaged in on the particulars of the agreement. As would Sephula's. Oh, never mind." The particulars of each contract are erased from Wreck and Rogue's memory, although they are aware of who signed and who did not.

They then join the group.

Main scene

Wreck and Rogue appear, Wreck is no longer restrained. Without a word, Rogue walks over and slaps Sephula, hard. "You know, we asked Dr. Strange to give us advice for a REASON." Then she sees the Zephyr slide show. "Oh my god."

Wreck sits on the ground. Instinctively he runs a hand through his hair, yet again forgetting that it would do him no good here as his hand passes through his head.

He then notices the monitor. Watching the slides, he glances over at Zephyr, his expression not really changing at all.

If we're going to be spending some time here, I figure I might as well take it to straighten a few things out. Namely the state of my soul, which I've been a little curious on ever since we got here and more curious on since Mephisto acted like mine wasn't worth a crap.

I turn to the person who I think might have a certain item, based on what she said earlier to Mephisto. "Hey, Nidia, you wouldn't happen to have a Bible back at the mansion, would you? I want to read it a little when we get back. If we get back."

Voltage

"Fine. Be that way. Enjoy hell."

Voltage is returned to the group.

Dillan

Mephisto agrees to the non-ferrous adamantium and returning trick.

The contract is drawn up. Overview: Mephisto gives a one way ticket out of hell, Almond Quimby alive and well, a non-ferrous adamantium katana that returns to your hand when requested. You give: your soul upon death. There is a confidentiality clause which states that you may not discuss this deal or any other incident that occurred within Mephisto's realm with anyone. Any grievances are to be brought to the Sorceror Supreme of Earth realm.

Mephisto gestures with a quill. "Just to complete the whole image, I'm going to need the standard blood signature. You know, you lack a certain amount of imagination here."

Lex and Mike

Storm sighs. "Are you actually legitimately asking me to trust the person that just sold his soul to Mephisto? Without any explanation? I lead the X-Men for years, Lex. I fought against the Adversary, someone on a par with Mephisto in many categories. I feel the relevant saying for this time is this: Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."

Main group

Now with 100% more Voltage! Meanwhile, Rogue is administering to Strange, who seems to be getting better.

Mike stares at his hand with annoyance and after about a minute, the glow around Mike's hand vanishes. Mike nods with satisfaction and picks up a different can.

Re: New Mutants 110 - Handbasket Express
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Dec 20, 2006, 12:54pm

Mike seems very pleased that he was able to make Lex smile, "Nothing to exciting. Watch…" Mike holds up his hand…and after a few seconds a force field crackles to life around it.

Mike closes his eyes, and takes a deep breath. He slams his hand down against a piece of rubble, and smashes right through it, "Force fields. Pretty limited range, but it's a cool trick for parties."

Mike concentrates a little more, and the forcefield spreads up from his arm. A sheath of energy starts forms around Mike's body, and his expression grows tense as it gets towards his face. He seems relieved when it stops at his neck, "I can create body armor…though, uhm…I've had problems getting it to turn off. First time I did this, I ended up knocking myself out."

Mike looks at Lex's determined face. He hesistates,"Hmm….okay, maybe you are."

Mike grimaces slightly, "Ah…what the hell, who wants to live forever, right? Besides, X-Men always come back to life, right?"

Storm frowns, "It sometimes seems that way, but New Mutants, on the other hand, tend to stay dead."

Mike's frown grows deeper What have I gotten myself into??

Mike hesistates again, but finally nods tersely, "Sure. I've been dying to meet the rest of the team anyway…" Mike winces at his own mention of the word dying, "Uhm…not quite what I meant."

He looks down and realizes he's wearing a red T-shirt, "Crap. Give me a second to change. I don't want to be the red shirt on this mission." Mike ducks into his suitcase and pulls on a beat up Jets jersey over his shirt (number 10). "All right. Time to kick some demonic butt." He doesn't look or sound half as convincing as he wishes he did.

Lex and Mike

Storm whips up a wind, carrying the two New Mutants off the ground.

"If your determination is to save your teammates, I will accompany you. Take a hand." She offers her hands to Lex and Mike, and I'm just going to assume that you take them. Then, it's airborne express to Greenwich Village, NYC.

Main Group

Strange has recovered to an extent, but still seems weak. He says, "I believe we have remained here far too long. The protection of the Vishanti is beginning to wane."

Suddenly, Mephisto appears. "Ah, ah, ah, Dr. Strange. Not to steal your thunder, but I have agreed to send these mutants home. Therefore, I allow you to take them from my realm, even the ones that I have rights to."

Strange seems surprised, and looks around at the assembled mutants with a look of concern. "I told you not to…"

Then, everyone finds themselves back in the Sanctum Sanctorum, but the return trip wasn't nearly as pleasant as the trip out, especially for those of you whose souls are owed to Mephisto (which includes, at this time, Wreck). Strange falls back into a meditative trance, and Wong appears to escort you into a side room.

"Clea say your friend arriving soon. Please to wait here." Wong gestures at a number of comfortable looking sofas and divans, then says, "Clea attend to Master. Dormammu…" He shivers slightly at the name. "Clea asks you stay for now. Tea?"

Almond felt just about horrible.
It wasn't just the fact that he had no idea where he was, or how he had got there. It wasn't merely that he had no idea what had happened, oh no.
He felt genuinely horrible. It felt like he'd just been instantaneously squeezed through a hole the size of a photon uphill, both ways simultaneously. He felt weak. Everything HURT. His brain was a fine mush, and he didn't quite remember his last memory.

He was somehow standing though. And walking, towards a large mansion at that, thought it seemed in pretty… bad shape. He had the vague thought to look inside, but he fell to his knees before he could take another step. He noticed that his clothes were quite shredded, and…

He vomited violently onto the patch of grass in front of him. His hands didn't have wrinkles anymore. He couldn't quite grasp what that meant, or why he had been feeling so jubilant, before he slowly fell on his back and blacked out.

If any of these individuals choose to return at a later date instead of revealing their situation immediately, Stephen will contact you via another method of communication."

Strange looks up at Dillan. "May have? I'm afraid this goes far beyond may have."

A copy of the contract is in front of him.

"You do realize that I have a number of duties, including but not limited to ensuring that this dimension is not invaded by extradimensional beings seeking to destroy it for various and sundry purposes. It is very difficult and dangerous work that I do, which has caused me to come into conflict with Dormammu, Nightmare, Mephisto, Shuma-Gorath, and others whose very countenance would drive most men mad. As such, being an attorney representing mortals of the Earth realm in deals with entities such as Mephisto is not something that I would volunteer for. However, you have forced me to take your case, against my will. This greatly angers me. I have much more important business to deal with."

After a moment, he continues. "By extradimensional legal precedent, you are exempt from the confidentiality clause when discussing matters with me. Of course, I have some interest in protecting you from further dealings with Mephisto, but fortunately, I have reason to believe that, for the nonce, you are safe. But allow me to reiterate: you have wasted my time and added a further burden onto my already taxing workload, after I specifically asked you not to engage in the activity that resulted in this. I am not in the least bit pleased."

His mannerisms turn slightly more friendly. "However, since I have a moment to discuss this right now, are there any greivances which you hold? Legitimate greivances about violating the verbatim contract, which I note has no provisions about katana length."

And I can assure you that Almond Quimby is alive and young. Mephisto has kept his bargain on that. As for psychological diagnoses, I was a surgeon, not a psychiatrist. I am not qualified to tender a medical opinion on that matter. If there are no more questions, I believe I have another consultation to do."

Dr. Strange sighs.

"At least you realize you made an error. However, there is some good news. Unlike his standard, I note that Mephisto did not enter a confidentiality provision into your contract. I am not sure the reason for this, but I have to think it will at least make your agreement more bearable than certain other agreements he has tendered. I remain positive that there is a reason. Also, I must say that the sacrifice of your soul to prevent your friends' souls from being tampered with in the future has some level of nobility, but I still believe the action was, at heart, ill-advised. Any particular questions?"

After he's done gushing over Wreck, Dillan introduces himself to the new kid.

"I'm Dillan Drummond. I've got the mutant ability to travel through time. You?"

Though, I don't think that any of my teammates need to know the specifics of my deal - rather, it is probably better that they do not."

"Errr…I'd rather not talk about the sword." replied Dillan, tucking the small blade into his pocket. "But the time travel thing isn't so great. You've got to deal with crazy time-traveling sorta-ex-girlfriends, gun-toting hypocrits that want you dead for doing exactly what they do, oh, and also knowing how Heroes ends."

"That last bit sucks the most."

"Yes, but look at your team. I believe that many of them would try to make the most out of that through some loophole or another, and find themselves in over their heads. In fact, I could imagine a three party deal where another entity uses the image of Mephisto, and they strike a bargain thinking they are immune."

"As far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with Wreck currently. However, there exists quite a bit of lassitude in Mephisto's wording. It never specifically mentions that he will have the same abilities that he had before his time in Mephisto's realm, and my knowledge of your teammate leads me to believe that, were this the case, his return visit would happen sooner rather than later. It also would seem to reason that Wreck's soul will return to Mephisto upon his death, as it went to his realm the first time and it doesn't prevent him from enforcing previous deals."

Everyone else

Clea looks at Lex, somewhat sadly. "As soon as he's done with his current appointment."

Storm and Rogue appear to be discussing the time that Cyclops and Storm fought for leadership of the X-Men, and Storm wagers that she could probably take out any of the New Mutants without her powers as easily as she did Cyclops.
