New Mutants 106, Part 1 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 9:26am

Cannonball and Rogue have just led the New Mutants through a pretty successful training mission.

It is just a few days after the Acolyte attack. Geforce is scheduled to be getting out of the hospital today. The main action will be starting about noon, but you guys can hang around the Danger Room and chat it up until then.

"I frickin' hate the Danger Room. All these robots really make being a telepath useless."

I kick a random piece of robot.

Rogue chuckles at Stryker, "Ah know how you feel, sugah."

Wreck sits on the floor next to a shattered robot, poking at it with his gun while wearing a sour expression.

"Hmph, useless," he mutters.

"Hey, at least you have the guns. Why couldn't we have one of those simulations where the enemies act like normal people and the computer calculates the psychic energy or whatever? Because seriously…this sucks."

I mumble under my breath.

"Back before you guys showed up, Xavier used to run me through those."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

Another day, another success. I'm starting to get used to success. Like it a lot.

"I dunno, I kind of like the Danger Room, really." Now that we've got some downtime, I'm using it to pratice my sculpting abilities; taking all the dirt I controllled during the fight and trying to make superhero replicas. Spidey, Daredevil, Hulk, stuff like that. "It's nice to do what we do and not have to worry too much about getting hurt. Seriously hurt, I mean."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Oct 20, 2006, 11:12am

"Yeah. I suppose."

I just kind of sulk around, considering going to take a shower, but kind of waiting to hear if there's any official declaration of being done, or post game speech, or whatever.

Oh.

"Uh, sorry I freaked out at you a few days back, Wreck."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 11:15am

Sam nods at Gerald, "Yeah, we're done down here for now. We'll meet back up in about an hour for debriefing and class." Groans from the New Mutants, but Sam just chuckles it off.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 20, 2006, 11:23am

Wreck doesn't respond. Rather, he makes a brief "on with it" twirl with his gun, gets to his feet and leaves the room.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Oct 20, 2006, 11:26am

Well, that could have gone worse. I guess it's time to hit the showers, and take a walk until the debriefing.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 11:54am

About an hour later, the New Mutants come back downstairs to see Sam sitting at the kitchen table having an animated discussion with Cable.

Before you are noticed, you overhear Sam say, "Your idea of back-up doesn't exactly make me comfortable…"

Cable shakes his head, "Hey, I never got you killed, right?"

Sam thinks about his battle with Sauron. Cable seems to know what he was thinking and comments, "Okay, I didn't get you permanently killed, right?"

Cable turns to the arriving New Mutants, "Just the future X-Men I was looking for, I have some questions for you guys…"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 20, 2006, 12:13pm

Huh. Funny. Memories a little short, but I thinK I remember us blowing up this guy back with that whole Sentinel thing. Thought he was just a robot, but guess not…kind of preferred the robot. With his hair and that eye and that gun he looks kind of freaked out. "What do you want to ask us?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 12:16pm

Cable smiles at Roxanne…he is going for warm uncle, it comes across more as asylum escapee, "Mad Maxx, right? You're the one who moves rocks. Kind of like Fred Flintstone."

Cannonball chuckles to himself, ever since Cable came back from the brink of death (See X-Cutioner's Song, True Believers), he has been trying to connect with people.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 20, 2006, 12:16pm

Still oddly silent for once, Wreck pulls up a chair and sits down, staring ahead behind his sunglasses.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 20, 2006, 12:19pm

I step behind Stryker, trying to be slow about it. Don't want to be rude, but this guy is a whole new kind of creepy. "My name is Roxxanne…I'm a girl." I don't ge the Flintstones thing, either, but I leave it alone.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 12:28pm

Cable inclines his head to the side before asking, "What do you guys know about SHIELD?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 20, 2006, 12:31pm

"It was their giant demonic bear that nearly killed all of us on our first mission. Nick Fury yelled at us."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 12:33pm

"Right. But there were some odd things about this bear according to Sam."

He looks at Stryker, "You said it had some kind of mental pattern?"

Stryker nods, "Yeah. I definitely had a sense of some mind in there. Fury said I was wrong, and it was just a robot…but that just…" he trails off.

Cable nods, "And what about it's energy source?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 20, 2006, 12:38pm

"I don't think we ever quite found out what that was supposed to be about."

Wreck scratches his head with the sight of his gun.

"Moonstar looked like she knew, but didn't say much."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 20, 2006, 12:40pm

I'm starting to get a few ideas what this might be all about, and I don't like any of them. "The bear's not loose again, is it?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 12:44pm

Cable shakes his head, "No. Thankfully. But, SHIELD is up to something big here, and that bear was definitely a part of it."

Cable thinks about it for a second, "My team is following up on some rumors about a SHIELD base out in Los Angeles. Seems one of their tech teams has set up shop with some equipment that should not have access to. We are thinking about heading out to to check things out…"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 20, 2006, 12:48pm

Zipping in late is Reflex.

"What's up guys?". He sees Cable then freezes…."Umm……." he mutters pointing a finger at Cable. He's obviously still thinking about the last encounter he had with "Cable".

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

Cable acknowledges Reflex's pointing, "Is there a problem?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 20, 2006, 12:53pm

"He thinks you're a robot," Wreck says.

"And with you, it's slightly hard to tell," he mutters to himself.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 12:56pm

Cable is curious, "A robotic version of me? Did they at least get the right arm and eye? Last time I fought a robotic version me, someone had used a mirror image to make the design. Really ruined the effect. Advanced Idea Mechanics, my ass…."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

He blinks.

"Hey Gerald, how good are you at erasing memories?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 1:03pm

Cable looks at Sam, "As I was saying, X-Force was thinking about going to LA to check things out. How about getting your team in on this?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 20, 2006, 1:06pm

"That sounds….."

He pauses.

"……far MORE sane than any of the stuff we've been thrown into thus far. I'm all for it."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 20, 2006, 1:16pm

Sam considers this, "Infiltrating a facility run by SHIELD doesn't sound like the best way to spend a Friday morning."

Cable chuckles, "Never took you as one to look for easy missions, Sam. There is something nasty going on here, and SHIELD has no idea what they are dealing with."

"And you do?"

Cable nods, "Unfortunately, yes, I think I do. We need to find out what's going on."

Rogue has been standing at the doorway, "You really think this is tied into that Demon Bear Robot?"

Cable nods.

Rogue mulls it over a bit, "These kids are still in trouble over their last field trip…"

Cable says, "I ran it by Xavier. As long as they are willing to follow orders, he thinks this could be a good learning exercise."

Rogue looks at Cable, "Since when are you and the Professor all buddy buddy?"

Cable shrugs, "We're not. He still thinks my methods are a little….extreme. But, Scott vouched for my intentions."

Sam looks at his team, "What do you guys think?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 20, 2006, 1:20pm

I step out, giving my thumbs up. Cable's still a little weird, and I get the feeling that there's more to him than I want to know, but the mission sounds straight. "I'm cool with it. The bearbot did attack us; makes sense for us to check it out."

"Uh, erasing memories? Never tried it, but I've heard the Professor can do it, if he feels like it."

More stuff about robots. Greeeeat. I love robots. Maybe if I convince God of that, I can stop having to fight them.

"But, backing up for a second…future X-Men? Yeah, whatever. But LA…I've never been there. That sounds cool."

Dillan doesn't bother getting pulled into Lex's tantrum. He's too pissed off himself to worry about Lex. Not only was Cable he last person he wanted to see, but the "treatment" Wolverine had given him didn't seem to be working and his arm was still killing him after what happened*

"Lex, cram it. If you want to complain, fine, but at least do it after we've completed Cable's mission."

Sam and Rogue exchange a glance. Rogue finally says, with a disarming smile, "Can we get going now. If that's all right with you, Lex?"

The team gathers down at the flight bay, in full equipment and gear. Members of X-Force are waiting for them down there: Boomer, Warpath, Rictor, Sunspot, and Siryn. Shatterstar and Feral were left behind, because they aren't exactly set up for "stealth" and they didn'ty have as much interest as meeting the New New Mutants like Rictor, Sunspot and Boomer would have.

Boomer smiles at Sam, "So, this is where you've been hiding out! You missed our date last week!"

Sam mutters something about Sentinels, and Tabitha pouts, "I'm more important than Sentinels!"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

Hmmm. Is this chick honestly dating Cornball, or is she some kind of creepy stalker? I could check, but I won't.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

Sam looks at the group (even if someone is not here, we can just claim they are with us later, if they want), and realizes that Geforce didn't come down. "Where's Greg? He was supposed to get out of the medbay this morning?"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

Lex starts laughing upon hearing Wreck's reaction to Boom Boom.

Ok, just stay calm. There's no reason to get mad. They were just joking.

Boomer looks at Wreck, then back at Sam, "I think one of your students has lost their mind."

"Ouch!" Tabitha says sympathetically. She then flashes a quick wink at Dialation, earning him a piercing look from Sam.

Sam sighes, "We'll have to check on that when we get back." None of the New Mutants (including Sam and Rogue) seem happy with this.

The Blackbird takes off heading towards Los Angeles. On the ride over, the New Mutants receive a communication from Beast, "Greetings, New Mutants. Exciting news for you. One of your old enemies, Rhino, has been sighted in Los Angeles. Very convenient timing. As you know, all the superheros are stationed in New York, so that leaves you in the best position to deal with Rhino. Good look!"

Dillan grabs the barrel of Lex's gun with his hand and pushes it down.

"Remember that thing with Sven Kleinstock? We're not having another one of those. Unless all your bullets have magically become rubber, I urge you to put that thing away."

"Are you kidding me?" laughs Dil at Wreck's remark. "I've seen enough newsreports to know that we can handle these chumps with ease."

Dillan begins knocking off exactly how the battle would go in a perfect world:

"Lex uses his powers and freezes Hydro-man, alternately-Reflex uses his kinetic dampening field to slow Hydro-man down to a crawl, but since that'd probably take a lot of concentration on his part, he'll be out of the fight."

"Stryker uses his telepathy to cause Beetle to get a migraine, probably won't put him down but it should stun him enough so that I can make a short time-jump and seperate him from his armor."

"Rogue probably wants revenge on Rhino so that's all hers to handle, while Madrock summons Golem to take out the guy with the jet boots. Also, assuming Reflex isn't tied up with Hydro-man, he and Cannonball can take on Speed-demon."

He takes a small breather.

"AND I was able to say all that before they started their villianous posturing…but since they probably heard me we'll need a new battle plan."

I got to say, I'm surprised anyone would want to team up with Rhino. I mean, sure, he's stupid enough to control, but…he's a loser. Come to think of it, all these guys look losers. I've seen some bad costumes hanging out with the X-Men, but these guys…Jubilee could give them fashion tips.

Dillan's right, though; he did do a number on Rogue and he almost kill me. Got to take him seriously, or things will end up like last time, only without Spidey.

But not too seriously.

I hear Dillan's plan and I take off, ripping off a chunk of the street and flying, eager to see just how I can handle this. Real superheroes, real saving the day, real bad guys…poorly dressed bad guys, but bad guys. Can't wait to see how this plays.

"Golem!" He appears behind me, rising from the ground as I near the villains. I point Jet Boot Man, show him the target. "Get him!"

He leaps forward with fists swinging.

"Good god," Wreck suddenly exclaims. "I recognize the guy with the jet boots. It's Fred Myers, the old baseball player that got drummed out for taking bribes! I used to watch him on TV when I was a little kid."

He shakes his head again.

"Small world, ain't it? We meet a celebrity, and he's about to get his face broken by Golem."

And with that he charges at Beetle and opens fire with his pistols before Dillan can raise another objection.

"Oh well."

Sam whispers something into his comm, and Rogue nods, throwing a quick glance at Dialation before nodding. Apparantly, Sam is willing to let Dil's plan go into action and see how things work out. With that, Sam blasts off at Speed Demon, and the two of them engage in some high speed maneuvering, each looking for an advantage. Speed Demon seems to be more agile, but Sam's blastfield makes him invulnerable.

Boomerang jets upward out of Golem's range, laughing all the way. He speaks some unintelligible Aussie and flings a barrage of boomerangs at Roxie.

The bullets bounce off Beetle, who is annoyed and turns his attention to Wreck. Beetle is hit by Stryker's psi-blast and his attack on Wreck is thrown off balance. He heads back into the air to regroup.

Rhino charges at Rogue, but this time she's ready for him. She blows him a kiss and dodges to the side.

Hydro-Man keeps flowing and changing, making it very hard for Heatwave's powers to freeze him.

«don't know exactly how fast I am blackmore….but if I'm able to catch up to him I do»

If I catch up to him I simply snare him in my field and bring him to an immediate stop. The juice I get from him I give some back to him in the form of a thousand or so punches to varaious parts of his head.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 23, 2006, 11:18am

Boomerangs? He's throwing…boomerangs? And talking, too, but I don't understand a word he's saying.

I fly to the side, trying to dodge and not doing a good job. One boomerang hits me in the gut, one in the knee, one in the shoulder and one in the face, and they all really hurt. I start to wobble down, but I get my sense back before I can hit the ground.

"Hey! Jerk!" I start floating upwards and focus on the ground as I rise, summoning ever rock, every pebble, every stray piece of asphalt around and sending it flying towards him, like a reverse rain. Or rocks. Lots of rocks. "Dodge that!"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Oct 23, 2006, 11:21am

I'm slightly irritated about all this flying going on. For instance, I'm sure I could help Roxxy, but Boomerang's way out of my range. As for Speed Demon and Rhino…I don't really want to interfere there. I'm now curious about Hydro Man and whether he still really has a workable mind when he's in the water form. I probe it, and since I still hate Heatwave, the most I'll give Hydro Man is a migraine, nothing big like I did to Beetle. Still can't believe I managed that.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Wreck on Oct 23, 2006, 11:22am

Wreck watches Beetle fly away and mutters.

"Thanks, Greg. We finally run into a bunch of guys who you'd be useful against and you vanish."

Then he turns to Boomerang and lines up a shot at one of his jetboots, squinting through the sights of his gun and waiting for him to hold still for a moment before firing.

"Maybe I'll get lucky and miss. It isn't every day you get to say you shot one of your childhood memories in the crotch."

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 23, 2006, 11:38am

Sam watches Reflex approach. He tosses him a quick nod, and leads Speed Demon in that direction, before peeling off suddenly to go after Boomerang. SD turns his head to follow, but suddenly finds himself stopped short by Curt's field. SD's sudden slowdown from 160 MPH to 0, sends him stumbling, leaving him wide open for a barrage of punches that take him out of this fight.

Hydro-Man's mind is very fluid, making it hard for Stryker to get a solid hold of him.

Wreck's shot is true, and Boomerang's right jet craps out. He is flying wildly, which leaves him wide open to a barrage from Madrock. Unfortunately, the what comes up, must come down factor kicks in, and the New Mutants are forced to scatter as the rocks rain back down on the ground.

I stay flying, trying to get a good bead on what. Reflex already has the speed guy under control, Rogue's with Rhino, but that water guys looks like a problem…but I might be able to take care of it. "Hey, Reflex!" I fly down towards him, trying to get his attention. "Do you think you could maybe get some mud in that water guy? I think I can slow him down a little."

Her body flew apart. It twisted into loosely connected parts, moving deftly to avoid the incoming projectiles. One after one, they simply passed by her into the skies. She didn't forget what boomerangs tended to do, however. Before they had gotten the chance to turn around, she was moving towards her enemy like some kind of bizarre animal.
She knew what she must have looked like… A terrifying flesh-colored snake, with appendages in wrong places… And part of her wanted the guy to be scared. She towered over him, and extended several pointed "blades" to impale his knees.

Maybe she shouldn't have done that…

Beetle's armor seems to be pretty electro-resistant (he does fire electro blasts…if his armor wasn't resistant to that, he would be even less effective than normal). Beetle tries to shock Wreck off him.

And that is about when Hydro-Man crashes down on them.

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws

"Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd here goes nothing."

Wreck sticks the taser up towards Hydro-Man, winces and jams the trigger of it as hard as he can.

Now, in the short time I've been with the New Mutants, I've seen:

-A giant robot bear
-A fat, yellow man with spider-legs, who runs an intergalactic reality show.
-Wreck's hygiene.

But, out of all that weird stuff, I have to say that seeing that girl turn into a snake, monster…THING, ranks pretty high. I don't know if Boomerang-Man is scared, but I know I am. "Uh, guys, monster! Monster problem!"

Re: Mission 6 - SHIELD laws
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 23, 2006, 1:26pm

Electricity arcs out from Beetle, and the taser through the water, washing across Hydro-Man, Wreck, and the Beetle. There is a distinct odor of burning flesh as they collapse in a heap. Beetle's armor is completely shock down. Bad insulation.

I've got to say, Boomer's got the right idea; I'm half-tempted to run away myself. The girl starts to turn back, though, so I guess she's safe…I guess.

I start to approach, making sure I keep the street between us. "Uh…hi." A small wave.

Rogue comes over brushing her hands. "Nice work guys. Everyone okay?" She notices Sam helping Stryker to his feet, and Wreck is beat down, as usual. Wreck wobbles up again, a strand of his hair on fire. He glances up, then pinches it away in a hiss of smoke.

Dialation uses his time jumping to pull Beetle from his armor, and hands him over to Rogue. Rogue shakes him awake, "Morning, Sunshine! What are you guys doing so far from Spider-Man territory?"

Beetle shakes his head and looks at Rogue bleary eyed, "We got a contract to cause some trouble out here as a distraction. The money was good, so we didn't ask too many questions…"

I follow Sam's motion and I don't quite see what he's talking about…at first. He's pointing to the wall, a strange part of the wall, and as I focus on it I can feel there's something not quite right about it. Like some of that wall isn't wall at all.

Oh. Okay. I get it.

I raise up a piece of the street and create a barrier around the girl, trapping her inside but giving her more than enough space to move around, and keeping the top open so she doesn't think we're trying to kidnap her or something. "Sorry if I startled you; I get that reaction sometimes. You can come out now…sorry, really."

Marisol let out a small squeak. This was so embarrassing, and not just because of how amateurish her transformation had been… She pulled loose from the wall and melded herself back into her usual form, now facing off with the ones who had followed her. The demonic-looking young girl and a blonde guy with a kind look. They were wearing uniforms…

She could still have escaped, and quite easily… but for some reason, she decided not to. She opened her mouth. "Er…" For a moment, she thought nothing would come out. "I'm Marisol."

Lex creates a fireball and blasts it towards Wreck.

But if it was, it would have to be the most pointless trick in the world. Well… it would be nice to sleep in a bed again. And she hadn't met many other mutants before. Wreck takes the brunt of the fireball, pretty much igniting on impact. He falls to the ground.

Then he looks up, glowing red dots appearing from somewhere beneath his glasses.

"I…..have……HAD IT WITH YOU ATTACKING YOUR OWN TEAMMATES, YOU RAT BASTARD!"

And he extends a palm towards Lex, the old feeling of crawling maggots reaching from behind his eyes. He wills Lex's internal structure to deteriorate.

Heatwave is starting to feel like crap. His powers start to blaze out of control, and he drops to his knees.

The other New Mutants are acting quickly to put out the fires. Stryker looks at Heatwave and winces painfully. He knows what he needs to do…but can he do it?

Stryker takes a deep breath and takes advantage of Wreck's nasty little trick to reach deep into Lex's mind.

I go over to Marisol, hoping she's not too shaken by this, since, you know…if I were her, I wouldn't be too impressed if the first thing I saw my 'team' do was fight with each other. Have to say, the thought of not being the only girl on this team has insane appeal to me…

"Sorry about that." I scratch the back of my neck, thinking up the best excuse. "See, a day or so ago, these guys called the Acolytes attacked because they were jerks and that's what jerks do, and they were led by this real powerful jerk named Exodus, and he was…well, he was pink, but he was really strong, so strong he could bring back people from the dead, or, at least that's what Lex thought, so Lex asked him if he could bring back our friend, Current, who died saving us from these robots called Sentinels, which are these big robots that hunt mutants and were trying to rebuild a REALLY big mutant-killing robot named Master Mold." I pause, catching my breath…done. "So Lex asked Exodus to bring Current back, but Exodus was stupid and weird and didn't do it, and then we all ganged up on him and beat him silly, but I guess Exodus did something to Lex while we weren't looking and messed his head up, and…well…" I motion to the others, not trying to be rude, but not trying to be unrealistic, either. "This happened. Sorry. Please stay, it's not always this bad. They're really a great bunch of guys, just rough sometimes."
