NM 105: Getting rid of that New Mutants Smell
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 9:42am

After the funeral, Xavier has gathered the New Mutants and Sam in the conference room. Xavier does not look pleased. After a painfully long pause where everyone is shifting in their seats, he begins, "The X-Men have a long tradition of sacrifice for the greater good. This isn't the first time we've lost one of our own, but this is the first time I can recall that we've lost someone in a way that could have been avoided."

"Sam, what were you thinking leading your students into battle against sentinels? At the very least, you should have contacted the mansion for backup."

Sam pauses himself before saying, his words measured very carefully, "We were the ones who found the problem. And the New Mutants never handed off their problems to the grown ups. Most of the time, we had no adults to pass it off to. When you formed our team, the X-Men were believed dead. Later on, you dumped us off on Magneto. Being a New Mutant is all about being self reliant, sir."

I'd speak, but I'm getting the strong feeling it's not the best idea right now.

Not that I don't want to stay, not that I don't agree with what Cannonball's saying, but….this is the Professor. And I just can't think of anything right to say, anything that'll make this better or bring Current back. Except…

"It's not like it was all Sam's fault or anything. I mean, yeah, he took us there, but when we got there, things just kind of…you know…"

I'm here, but I'm keeping quiet and trying not to be overwhelmed by all the crazy emotional thoughts flying around.

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Protoman on Oct 17, 2006, 9:57am

"I completely agree with what The Proffessor is saying. I'm sorry Sam, but he's right. If Incubus hadn't stopped me I would have handled it just fine. Wreck probably could have done something if Current hadn't blasted him. He was being stupid and you as a leader should have stopped him."

Perhaps that wasn't the best way to say it….

Lex looks worried.

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 9:57am

Xavier looks at Sam, slightly surprised, "Sam…I didn't know you felt that way…."

«Yes, you did, I used pretty much the same line in the post-X-Cutioner's Song issue of X-Force…whoops…bad OOC, bad!!!»

"Yes, sir. I messed up…and we lost Current. That loss will haunt each and every one of us for a long time. Same way it was when we lost Doug. And I'm sure the same way you all felt when you lost Proudstar…" «and Jean Grey…many a time»

Xavier sits in his chair looking across the New Mutants. Their young, raw thoughts are so close to the surface it is hard for him to ignore them….

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 9:59am

Sam turns to Lex and says softly, "The way our powers were acting in there, Wreck could have been killed just as easily as Current was…It really didn't matter WHO we lost. It matters that we lost one of our own. Current knew what he was facing, and didn't turn his back on his teammates…and the world for that matter."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Protoman on Oct 17, 2006, 10:02am

"That isn't the point Sam, there was another way. You disputed Wreck, but not me."

Lex stands up his chair sliding across the floor and slamming in to the wall.

"YOU'RE OUR LEADER, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING OUT FOR US! YOU WEREN'T EVEN THERE WHEN WE WERE FIGHTING THE ROBOTS! SAM, HOW CAN WE TRUST YOU NOW? ARE YOU GOING TO LET ALL OF US DIE?!"

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 17, 2006, 10:02am

Okay, enough of this. I'm nervous, I'm biting off what little fingernails I have, I want to know and be done with it. "Are you going to kick us out?"

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 10:06am

Xavier steeples his fingers in front of his face, "And what are we going to do to prevent this from ever happening again?"

Sam looks at his teammates, "Sir…I am not going to lie to you. We live in dangerous times. There is nothing we could possibly do to guarantee this would never happen again. These kids are heroes. Even if we sent them home right now, there is no guarantee that Roxie or Gerald or Lex wouldn't get themselves killed trying to stop the Reavers from attacking a school full of children. The best place for them is right here. Now, if you think I am not the man to teach them, that is one thing, but I am to blame here, not these New Mutants."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Oct 17, 2006, 10:08am

"I'm pretty sure I know better than to fight the Reavers. They're the robots, right? I don't do robots."

Levity is sort of needed after Lex got all Limp Bizkit.

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 10:08am

Sam glares at Lex, "Do you really want to talk about abandoning your teammates in the field? How many times have we caught you just standing around when the bad guys attacked?"

«cheap shot, I know »

Post by Wreck on Oct 17, 2006, 10:12am

Wreck sighs.

"As much as I hate to defend Cornba…..Guthrie here, that situation really wasn't as bad as it appeared. I think there were any number of ways we could have gotten out of it. But Quimby decided he wanted to do what he did, and he wasn't going to let any of us stop him. If it wasn't here, he would have done it somewhere else. Or somewhere else. Or somewhere else."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 17, 2006, 10:13am

Mr. Cannonball does have a point; if I wasn't here, I'd probably try and pick up the hero thing somewhere else. Maybe even sidekick it with Spidey, if he's not still hanging around the girl in the leather.

I've got a bad feeling I don't want to know what Reavers are, though.

"I think we can tough it out, yeah." I nod, glad this is turning in a happier direction. "I mean, the thing with the Sentinels turned out bad…but we still won, right? Mistakes, yeah, but we won, and you made that Master Mold thing sound like it could've really been worse if we hadn't gone."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 10:14am

Xavier is still taking it all in, "This isn't the first team your team has acted recklessly….what about when they shot Wolverine? And dropped a roof on Jubilee?" Xavier notes that despite the gravity of the situation, several of the NM have slight smiles at the mention of those two situations.

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 17, 2006, 10:18am

"Well, that's not totally fair. I mean, the roof thing was during the mission; it wasn't like we wanted to hurt her or anything." Well, maybe I did. A little. A little. "And Wolverine started it…sort of…kind of…not really, but he's just fine, now."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Wreck on Oct 17, 2006, 10:21am

"Besides, the roof dropping was all my bright idea."

Wreck smiles slightly.

"My powers aren't exactly earth shattering. I often need to find ways to be sneaky instead."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 10:22am

Xavier continues, "Roxanne…the problem is not that you acted. I am quite proud of the fact that you stood up to the Sentinels without flinching. It is that you acted without thinking. We have a mansion full of X-Men «not to mention the Avengers and Fantastic Four on speeddial» who could have done this. Instead, you went out untrained and unprepared, and as a result, Current is now dead."

"The only time I've been standing around is when my powers are still on the fritz after being strong. You weren't even there Sam…What if that had actually been Cable? We would all be dead right now."

Lex expression goes from anger to unease.

Sam nods at Lex, "I'll be the first to admit that I made a lot of mistakes out there. I got cocky, and we paid the price for it…"

Xavier nods, "Which brings us to what do we do to prevent this from happening again?"

Roxanne is whispering, "Don't fire us…don't fire us…"

Xavier smiles softly at Roxanne, "No one is going to be fired…"

Roxanne says, "Not even Sam?"

"Not even Sam."

Cannonball looks like he is going to faint.

"Though, it is clear to me that he is not quite ready to lead this team on his own…"

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Oct 17, 2006, 10:38am

Rogue carefully knocked on the door of the conference room. She didn't know what the atmosphere inside would be like, so she braced herself for anything.
Without waiting for a reply, she opened the door and stuck in her head.
"Can Ah come in yet, Professor?" she questioned with a slight smile.

«Wait, we just posted at the same time, then both deleted them at the same time as well?»

«nice timing»

Xavier smiles, "Come right in Rogue, I was just telling them the news…"

Sam looks a little annoyed at being paired up with a "babysitter," but at least the team is not disbanded…and it could be worse, it could be Scott…or LOGAN!!

Incubus looks google eyed, "Mom??"

"Rogue's our new leader?" I'm a little surprised, yeah, but it's a pleasant one; I know first-hand that she completely and totally rocks. I mean, you know, Cannonball's fine, but Rogue would stomp him flat in a fight, no question. Safer hands. "Awesome." I smile, but it's short-lived with what Incubus says. "Rogue's your mom?"

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Oct 17, 2006, 10:44am

"Ah don't know about that…" said Rogue with her usual wariness when it came to Incubus. She wasn't quite sure what to think of his views on her, and this wasn't the time for that anyway.
"Well, hi y'all. Ah'll be giving Sam a hand for a while, be he's still gonna be the official leader. Just makin' sure you understand that."
She smiled apologetically and watched their reactions.

I do a quick mental calculation of all the X-Men that have reason not to like me. Rogue's not on it. That's a good thing.

Then again, I hope it isn't a too many cooks spoil the soup kind of thing.

Then again again, I'm probably thinking too much, especially with my powers kind of taxed with blocking out all the random emotional bs going on right now.

"Uh, I have a question. Do we just call you Rogue, or Ms. Rogue, or what?" Since Mr. Guthrie seemed to want to be called Mr. Guthrie, I think it's a fair question.

LATER THAT NIGHT…

The New Mutants are all tucked into bed…except for Stryker, who is having problems sleeping. He is walking down the hall of the dorms, when he notices that one of the doors is open. He is trying to figure out which New Mutant it belongs to, when it occurs to him that is not one of their rooms.

Well, that's curious.

An open door, and not one that would normally be open.

I'm going to guess that it's going to be Rogue or someone else who would be offended if I did a quick psi scan. I sneak up towards the door and try to get a quick glance in.

Stryker (who was in disguise as a GM) is surprised to see Colossus sitting on the bed with his back to the door. There are pictures of Colossus and his family all over the room.

Colossus? What the…

*cue gratuitous flashback to God Loves Man Kills, retcon version*

Piotr's the only X-Man that really seemed to be willing to talk to me after that…he was, in some ways, my only friend at the mansion. Sure, Xavier and Jean tried to help me, but Pete accepted me. There's a big difference. I remember when he died in Dallas, and I remember why he isn't here now. Both events have had a deep impression on me.

"Piotr? Is that you?"

I can't help myself. I walk in.

Oh. I should have known. I, of all people, should have known. Family is difficult for me. My father murdered my mother, and wanted to kill me too. I pretty much don't have a family, in any traditional sense. Pete, though, Pete's family…they were what he had, all he wanted in this world. And it got ripped away. In some ways, that makes us more similar. My father's acceptance is what I strove for when Colossus and I first met. But it was not to be.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, Piotr. I'm really sorry. I…"

I wish I could say I understand. I wish I could understand.

"I…guess I'll just leave you alone, then."

I turn and take about five steps away, but linger in the hall outside the room. There's something more I should do. I don't know what.

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 17, 2006, 1:30pm

Colossus picks up Bamf, and looks towards Gerald in the hallway, "This was Illyana's favorite doll. Kitty gave it to her a long time ago…" Colossus sighes softly, "Back when life made much more sense. Jubilee had it last I saw. She was with Illyana when she died, you know…"

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Oct 17, 2006, 1:43pm

"Yeah. I know."

I'm not sure what to say. Pete's always been the rock. It hurts me to see him like this, and it bothers me even more that I can't help him. This is my hero, the man I respect the most at this whole god damn mansion, and he's…

He's human after all. He's not a machine. He's not infallible. God, I wish I could do something to help him.

"Pete? Is there anything I can do? It's just…you've done so much for me. You're the one person that really…was there for me. If there's anything I can do…"

There's nothing I can do except sound stupid. Stop talking stop talking stop talking.

I had to try.

I don't agree with what he's doing, and I don't want to be an enabler, but I will help him pack.

After a minute, I pause.

"Piotr? What's it like, you know, up there?" My eyes shoot skyward for a second. "Is it…"

I don't even know how to finish that sentence, and maybe it's just the insomnia talking. The thought of going to Avalon…am I insane? Magneto…he's not a good person, he hurt Wolverine, almost killed him, but…if Piotr vouches for this…

It's official. I'm insane. But I can't help it.

I take myself inside the covers and scream, and not just any scream, either; it's a top-of-my-lungs, hurting-my-throat-and-my-ears type of scream. "Ghost!Ghostghostghost! Somebody help, somebody help!"

No. I think I know what's happening.

"HOW COULD YOU?"

Piotr snuck the Acolytes in. He must have. I reflect on him mentioning her waiting outside…

I have no faith that this is going to work better than it did last time, but I have to psychicly attack Colossus. <Keep in mind that my power level has raised twice since the initial bio>

Rogue awoke with a jolt. Someone screaming was a definite sign of danger. She recognized the voice as Roxanne's.
Still slightly dizzy from her sleep, she jumped to her feet and considered if she should bother getting into her uniform. Instead, she opted for a bathrobe, blasted through the door and headed for Roxanne's dorm.

Stryker's psi attack takes Colossus completely by surprise. He is in human form, and has not been active in the field for a few weeks now. Colossus's head is pounding, "What are you doing?" Colossus shoves Stryker aside, and stumbles into the hallway, practically crashing right into Rogue.

Sam is right at Rogue's heels. "Colossus? What are you doing here?" Colossus in a practically blind rage lashes out at the nearest person to him, who happens to be Rogue. Being still in human form, all he manages to do is hurt his hand.

I hear the noise and commotion from the hallway, and get out of bed…slowly. Real slowly. I ball up a clumb of dirt from my floor and make it follow after me, just in case I might need to throw it hard and fast at a ghost or Dracula or something…although the dirt would just go through a ghost…eh, couldn't hurt.

I peek outside my room, watching the scene go down.

Geforce takes a quick look around. He sees Piotr but it takes a moment for recognition to set it. Colossus left before Greg arrived. Were it not for photographs he would not have recognized him at all. But once he did.

Colossus? That means the Acolytes. And where they go, he can't be too far behind…

His thought was interupted by Gerald's mention of a powerful presence outside (he doesn't even register the word "psi").

Without even really giving it a first thought, let alone a second thought, Greg enters the nearest room, opens the nearest window and leaps out.

So close.

Anyway, it seems the fight ran away from me. There's something going on in the foyer, so I head in that direction.

Hmmmm….that's a lot of really big guys. That usually means they suck at psychic defense. And there are X-Men here, which means we need to impress them.

I pick…Unuscione. Seems to be hurting Beast, so she (it is a she, right?) seems like the best target. I assault her telepathically with the knowledge that 15 years from now, no one will even correctly remember her gender.

Got to do something, got to do something, got to attack somebody…I pick that big guy. He's starting to get back up, looking dazed, so I guess I should do my thing and make sure he stays down for a little while longer.

"Golem!" He emerges in front of me, tearing through the floor and looking little bigger and stronger and more solid than usual. Not going to question it, not now. "Dogpile!"

I point towards the big guy and Golem gets the gist, running his way and jumping high, going for a devastating Belly Flop Atttack.

«If I am forgetting anything, let me know»

Just outside the mansion: Exodus and Geforce are facing off. Geforce ripped a large chuck of rubble off of Beast in the mansion to toss at Exodus. It slammed into his force field and staggered Exodus back a step. Geforce had a big smile on his face, as he thinks he has an edge here. Geforce starts to hold Exodus down. He hefts up a big chunk of the earth to bury Exodus.

Exodus's eyes begin to glow. Geforce feels his powers start to waiver, and begins to feel a tremendous pressure in his head. Blood drips from his nose. Geforce makes a last ditch effort to hurl the earth at Exodus, but it just seems to flow around his shield harmlessly. "Nice try…but you have years to go before you will be my match.." Exodus makes one final psychic lunge, and Geforce falls to the ground like a puppet who's strings have been cut. Exodus hangs back watching the fight at the mansion for a moment. He tuts slighty, "Master, this has become a completely mess." He pauses as if hearing voices in his head, "I will finish this myself." He begins to move towards the mansion with confidence.

Incubus is coming up on his bike just in time to see all the chaos.

Scanner took off and hasn't been seen since Madrock's ghost incident.

Upstairs in the dorm room: Cargill was facing off with Dialation, Heatwave, Rogue, and Cannonball, with Colossus stuck in the middle. Cannonball, Dialation, and Cargill are all pretty stunned. Colossus has scooped up Cargill, who has convinced the other Acolytes that Colossus was at the mansion selling out the Acoltyes. What a bitch!

Heatwave has just powered up, and him and Colossus seem to have Cargill well in hand. Cannonball turns to Colossus, "You have this?" Colossus nods, and Cannonball and Rogue head downstairs to the main battle. Rogue gives Heatwave a stern look before they go.

In the foyer: Several of the X-Men (Cyclops, Beast, Bishop, Gambit, Psylocke, and Angel), and Reflex are facing off against the Kleinstocks, Javitz, Unuscione, and Katu. Cyclops and Reflex teamed up to floor Javitz. Stryker, Madrock and Wreck have just come downstairs, and Golum dogpiled Javitz to take him out of the fight for good.

Reflex was going to attack Unuscione, but stopped short when Geforce took the rock away. She tried to hit him with her shield, but he dodged, and went after the Kleinstocks. They keep trying to blast him, but he just keeps moving faster and faster. Meanwhile, Wreck has taken aim at Sven's kneecap, yet still hasn't fired.

Stryker takes aim at Unuscione, and she screams loudly. Her shield falls down for a second, which is plenty of time for Gambit to hit her in the chest with a well timed card. He smirks at her and tips an imaginary hat at Stryker, "Nice work, mes ami."

Wow. The X-Men actually respect us, or at least act that way. That's pretty cool. Unfortunately, although it isn't as hard as it used to be, I feel pretty used up psychicly. And these guys are pretty big…going toe to toe with them would be stupid with a capital stupid. So I'm just going to hang out on the upper deck, trying to refocus. And I can feel it…something big is coming. A psi presence more powerful than I've ever felt before. I have no idea what it is, but it dwarfs Xavier, that's for sure…probably dwarfs Xavier and Jean combined.

Whoever's closest to me, probably Madrock or Rogue based on what I've been seeing, I turn to them and say, "These guys are small potatoes…something's coming that I don't know the X-Men can stop."

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme

The other Kleinstock is bewildered by what happened. This gives Reflex a pretty good opening to take him down, and he does.

A little ticked now.

I stumble back, grasping my head as a sharp pain ripples throughout, but I still have enough sense about to use my powers…I think. One way to find out. "I wonder if this guy can fly…"

Madrock succeeds…kind of. The other X-Men watch as Katu falls down to the level below, he's out of the fight, but dropping a guy with electromagnetic powers down into the bowels of the mansion seems ill advised. Bishop and Psylocke hop down into the hole after him to subdue him.

This is the worst idea ever, but I trust Rogue more in this fight than I trust myself. Exodus is still looking at Lex as if Lex had told him that Santa Claus had died. His jaw kind of hangs slack, and Wreck manages to get in their quickly. He manages a solid hit, shock to the neck. She pushed him off roughly - he landed on the floor, looking to be in pain.

She could see why he did it now.

She considered it, and realized she might as well try. Using her newly gained telepathy, she struck out … at Exodus.

While Rogue is telepathically attacking him Lex will continue to beat on Exodus until his strength wears out.

Rogue's attack is timed almost perfectly with Psylocke hitting Exodus with a psi-blade, and Xavier following up with a TP whammy. Lex nudges him with his toe, but Exodus is out cold. Exodus is down for the count.

Everyone just kind of looks at each other, a little in shock. Beast looks at the New Mutants, pretty impressed, "Stars and garters, Sam, your students are incredible."

As cool as all this is, as glad as I am that this all happened without anybody dying or sacrificing themselves, I can't help getting thrown off. "Stars…and garters?"

Rogue pushed away her surprise and kneeled beside Gerald, checking how he was.

Beast looks at Madrock and smiles, "You know, in my years of being an X-Men and an Avenger, no one has ever asked about that before. It is a long story of a mispent youth. Maybe when you are a little older, I can tell you the story. How does next week sound?"

Sam jets over to check on Geforce, who is pretty beat up, but still alive. "Ah have to take him down to the medical lab, you guys all right with the mop up?" Scott nods, and Sam jets off.

Lex is standing in silence staring at Exodus.

He was after me. Everyone here was put in danger because he was after me.

"Okay…sure." I'm not so sure I want to know, but I nod, heading over to Rogue and standing beside her as I look around at all the sleepy bad guys. "So, what do we do with them?"

Colossus walks over to Lex and puts a heavy hand on his shoulder, not saying a word.

Rogue turned her worried eyes towards Roxanne.
"That's for the Professor to decide, sugah… Ah guess we'll have to drop them off somewhere."

Bishop notices the dead Kleinstock brother, and looks at Wreck, "Nice shot…these guys seem to have no luck with guns. Real shame."

Lex looks at Colossus then around at everyone else.

"Guys…I…."

"No, it's not your fault, don't be ridiculous," said Rogue strictly, having used her fading mental powers on Lex.
She stood up and crossed her hands.

Stryker, by the way, is fine, just out cold…and has a creepy little smile on his face. That little perv!

«You were semi-right.»

Re: Mission 5: Getting rid of that New Mutants Sme
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on Oct 18, 2006, 12:16pm

Colossus nods at Lex, "We all have things in our past we regret."

«the panel switches to show a guilty looking Gambit, followed by Rogue thinking about Ms. Marvel, Cyke thinking about dumping his wife and child to go hang with an ex-girlfriend, etc.»

"How is this all your fault?" Okay, yeah, I don't really know diddly about the situation, but I know what I can see. "You didn't make these guys attack us, they just…did."

Colossus continues, "The important thing is that we move forward and keep living."

Cyclops looks at Colossus and says, "Does that go for you too, Pietr?"

Colossus is stunned, "I am not sure. This has been my home for so long…" he trails off.

"No…they were here after me. It is my fault."

Lex looks at the ground.

"I need to be alone for awhile."

Lex walks back into what's left of the mansion and up to his room.

«I figured that was a good way to handle it seeing as I'm heading off to the comic store now. I may be back later on, hopefully someone is on.»

They all watch Lex leave. Sam moves to follow him, but Rogue shakes her head, "He's better off being alone right now. I know, trust me on this one." Sam nods, but doesn't seem to like it.

If I'm waking up, that means I'm not dead! Yay!

"So, uh…what happened?"

I look around, looks like we won. Good enough.

I look at Rogue briefly, then I look back down.

"Sorry about that. It seemed to make sense at the time."

Dillan, recouped from his time-jump (and he's completely unsure why it left him so weakened) joins the rest of the X-men and New Mutants finish their battle. He doesn't say much, but he does mumble to himself:

"How in the hell are they okay with Wreck shooting that loser?"

[What I don't get is how Exodus is a cronnie. I mean, I'm not too familiar with the character. But, just from what I've read and stuff…he could probably throw old Magnus for a loop. Is he like Graviton; powerful, but too crazy to realize how powerful he is?
