New Mutants 104: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 9, 2006, 8:48am

Cannonball has assembled the troops (with the obvious exception of Stryker) for a training mission aboard the Blackbird. Listed objectives are familiarizing yourselves with being transported in the Blackbird and learning the safety features for when it inevitably gets hit by a cruise missile, or Magneto, or Magneto with a cruise missile.

You'll be launching at noon, feel free to discuss among yourselves until then.

Wreck sits quietly in the Blackbird, oddly enough wearing a large sombrero.

"Well folks, given that this school seems to have a high priority on trying to kill us, I expect we'll all be in the Savage Land by about 2100. Who wants dino burgers?"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 9, 2006, 10:11am

Cannonball says to Wreck, "You, um, might want to pack better. You know, bring along everything you would bring along if you were, say, going on an actual mission somewhere. Because, um, that would be the best way to do our practice flight."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Wreck on Oct 9, 2006, 10:16am

He glares in response, shaking his ever present hobo knapsack at Guthrie.

"I knew it all along! You are trying to kill us!"

And he stops.

"……wait, you aren't the one doing the flying, are you?"

"God, I hope not. Wasn't looking forward to crashing today."

I enter the room with an apple in my mouth, chomping away, savoring the flavor. It's amazing just how much I've forgotten over these past years; the way the wind blows, the way the ground feels beneath me, the way an apple tastes…this is, what, the fourth apple I've eaten this morning? Delicious. Tongue feels like it's on fire.

"Well, the Blackbird pretty much flies itself," says Sam, rolling his eyes a little. "But I'll be at the controls. Don't worry. It won't let me do anything weird."

"When did Roxanne become the voice of reason?"

Wreck shakes his head, then pulls his hat over his eyes.

"Wake me up when we're saying hi to Elvis."

"Very nicely said put, Roxanne," said Almond as he entered the plane. He still felt a few pains here and there, but was already waving around his cane graciously and smiling. "But I was being sarcastic…"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 9, 2006, 12:07pm

The Blackbird takes off, using the VTOL* system to rise directly into the air from below the basketball court. Sam takes it through a series of predetermined stunts such as flying at top speed (I believe that to be MACH-2, so those of you not used to it might be taken aback) for a little while, then skimming close to the surface to show off its ability to avoid detection. After that, there's a brief bout of simulated combat, with the Blackbird taking "evasive action" and darting back and forth a little. After that, Sam says, "I reckon there's only two things left to show you. The first is bailing out, and Professor X told me not to do that live. We have a video of it that we can play if anyone has any questions about it. No questions? Good." If anyone actually had questions, he talks over them.

"The second thing is showing the auto-pilot and destination. Blackbird, take us to Rose Heights, NY, accessed in file NM-02-03."

The Blackbird changes its flight plan.

  • - Vertical Take Off and Landing, faithful one!

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 9, 2006, 12:14pm

"Thrilling." It is nice, really, but Cannonball's really nerdying it up. I finish off the apple and toss it over the side, not really caring where it lands. "Are we actually going to do something besides fly around all day?"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 9, 2006, 12:22pm

"Uh, yeah."

The town of Rose Heights appears before you, almost exactly as you remember it…diner, boarded up buildings, warehouse with a big hole in the roof…then, east of town, where the Sentinel base used to be there is…an exact duplicate of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters?

"That's not exactly what I was expecting," says Cannonball. "I actually expected to find the place still wrecked and do a little reconaissance."

You hear the Blackbird radio go off, and Beast's voice comes through. "Mr. Guthrie, you seem to have violated you initial flight plan."

Sam turns the radio off. "Not a conversation I want to have right now." The Blackbird does a few flyby's of the faux Xavier's, while Cannonball spends some time thinking.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Oct 9, 2006, 12:45pm

Almond felt just a slight bit sick.
"How well armed is this thing? I doubt that this fake is anything but some kind of malevolent plan. If we don't blast it to smithereens right now, we'll regret it later."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 9, 2006, 12:48pm

"Armed? Uh, it's basically transportation, it doesn't really have weapons."

The basketball court of the faux Xavier's opens to reveal an empty hangar.

"Why just shoot us out the air when they can open a hangar and have us land in their trap willingly."

Wreck lifts his hat slightly.

"Cornball, you aren't really intending to land in their trap, are you?"

"I have no idea what I'm intending to do," said Sam. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking of going into the trap, even knowing it was a trap, just because this has got me curious. But I'm probably touching down a ways away and reconnoitering by land, since we can land in any area that's mostly flat, and there's always a mostly flat area conveniently nearby."

He looks at the team somewhat seriously.

"That is, if you're up to taking this on. If you guys want to go back to the mansion and not find out what's going on here, that's up to you."

"Can we please just get on with it? Damn!" I flop back in my seat, adding a sigh to the mix. "Let's just drop down, park the jet, get out and start blowing stuff up. Hit them before they hit us; it's not a complex concept."

Greg gazed out of the window, not entirely enthused to be back here. He damned near froze up before the Sentinels last time, which surprised him since he never once considered that he may be afraid of them. His first encounter with one years ago was over so fast he never had the chance to really register any trepidation towards them.

He briefly considered voicing the opinion that they ought to fly into the obvious trap because, hell, they were going to fall for an obvious trap eventually, but he had the feeling that it wouldn't go over too well. Except possibly with Mr. Immortal over there.

"I agree with sending Reflex in for recon." he spoke, and once again hoped inwardly that horror movie rules don't apply here.

"Alright then."

Cannonball lands the Blackbird in a convenient location a little ways away.

"I don't really want the X-Men knowing what we're doing, so if something happens and you need us, use this."

He hands Curt a small flare gun.

"I'd give you a radio, but like I said, I really don't want them picking up."

Then heads off in a blur towards the "mansion"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 1:10pm

Off Curt goes, speeding onto the mansion grounds. The first thing you notice are the standard mansion defenses…laser turrets, that sort of thing. You easily dodge those, still just getting a lay of the land, when suddenly…

Curt is jumped by a massive reddish…werewolf? The impact of the tackle does convert to energy standardly, but the werewolf has also grabbed you (which doesn't convert as easily. It picks you up by one hand around your neck, and says in a throaty Scottish burr, "Och, now what're ye supposed to be?"

She's surprised by the punching of the nose, enough to let her grip slip enough for you to get free. But she looks mighty pissed off now.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 1:43pm

So, are you running or staying? Because if you're staying, there's an angry Scottish werewolf ready to…do something or another.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 10, 2006, 1:46pm

I stay at a safe distance and ask "Who are YOU and why do you guys have a duplicate of the mansion?!?!?"

«I'm trying to get "Rahne" to tell me who she is, probably should have thought about that before I punched her »

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 1:50pm

"Duplicate? This IS the mansion, you halfwit!" Rahne makes another lunge…but you manage to dodge her this time.

Suddenly, another figure approaches the scene…a large man with white hair, an enormous gun, a mechanical arm, many pouches, and thin ankles. "What's going on here?" He points the gun at you.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 10, 2006, 1:52pm

Confident (probably too much so) that he can get away…Curt decides another approach.

"This can't be the real mansion…we just left the real mansion. " Curt says with his hands in the air.

"Cannonball brought us here to check things out since we fought Sentinels here yesterday"

«lol I just caught the Liefeld stab»

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 1:56pm

"Ah, Cannonball." Cable lowers the gun slightly. "Why don't you come in, and we'll talk about this for a little bit? I'm not sure what he's told you about us, so come on in, and we'll get caught up."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 10, 2006, 2:00pm

"No I'm fine here thanks…we can talk here" Curt looks behind his back to make sure his getaway path is still clear…

"Who are you guys…and since when is the mansion in Rose Heights?"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 2:06pm

When you turn around, you notice that more people have arrived at the scene…a bleach blonde with sunglasses crappier than Jubilee's, a trenchcoat wearing dark-skinned guy (possibly Latino), and a guy who seems to be glowing black, without much more definition than a face.

"No, I insist," says the man with the gun. "Don't think you can bluff your way past me. The New Mutants and I will happily teach you the error of your ways. I doubt you've even met Cannonball."

He looks around you at the assembled team. "Here's your last chance to surrender."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 10, 2006, 2:09pm

"OK I surrender…"

With that Curt extends his dampening field…hoping to steal a bit of energy before firing the flare in the air. Hoping the combo of the flare and field distracts them enough…he heads off at top speed ot the jet.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 2:17pm

They are distracted. You start taking off at top speed towards the jet when suddenly the earth starts shaking beneath you. Disoriented and unable to move as quickly, you know that the various and sundry people who confronted you will be able to catch up soon. Looking over your shoulder, you can see that the werewolf is not far off.

Meanwhile, everyone sees the flare go up. Cannonball says, "Well, I reckon we should go after him. Look sharp, people."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 10, 2006, 2:20pm

I do a complete 180 and run directly AT the werewolf as fast as I can. Hoping not only to catch her off guard…but figuring the ground in that area is not shaking.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Wreck on Oct 10, 2006, 2:21pm

"I suppose if he was in good enough shape to fire the flare, he ain't dead."

Wreck mutters under his breath as he fetches his knapsack.

"Pity."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 2:26pm

The good news is that you're right, the ground over there is not shaking.

The bad news is that you're wrong, it doesn't catch her off guard. She grabs you relatively easily. "Got ye!" Then proceeds into the bear hug of doom.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 10, 2006, 2:32pm

I try to wiggle at superspeed hoping it lets me slip out.

If this doesnt work after a few seconds….I pretend to pass out.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 10, 2006, 2:55pm

“About damn time.” I get off the ship and create a platform beneath my feet, flying off towards the flare’s spot. After I get a little height, I see Reflex below…and he has a new friend. A werewolf. Weird. Not too weird, but weird.

Well, werewolf-action is better than no action at all. “Hey, Fido!” A lift out a decent chuck of rock from the ground below, about the size of your average Volkswagen. “Fetch!” And, of course, I toss it toward the werewolf, full speed, knowing the Reflex’ll probably get out of the way in time.

Probably.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 3:01pm

Strangely enough, the rock doesn't lift from the ground…it starts to, and then just sort of stays there, sort of struggling between lifting and not lifting. Meanwhile, Madrock is shot at by the big gun guy, but it misses. Also, Reflex looks to be unconscious.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 10, 2006, 3:09pm

"Okay…this should work."

I bob to the side as the shots fly by, giving up on the piece of ground; don't know what the deal is with that, but no time to worry. If the direct approach doesn't work, I'll just have to get a little creative.

I focus on the ground underneath the white-haired guy, but instead of lifting it, I try make it break apart. Shift around the dirt underneath, make the surface weak, basically making a makeshift sinkhole right underneath him, a real deep burial…if it works.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 3:23pm

Once again, the geo-powers don't quite seem to work right…they start to work, then they are opposed. Madrock can trace the opposition to the guy wearing the trenchcoat, it seems he has somewhat similar powers. But, during the revelation, she is hit by a blast by the gunman, and falls to the ground (stunned, but not out). It should be noted that the opposing earth powers have somehow created a thin layer of dust obscuring everyone's ankles.

Decidedly absent from the current scene: Cannonball.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 10, 2006, 3:26pm

The blast hits dead-on; it's not a bullet, doesn't go through, but it knocks the hell out of me and sends me falling down, landing on my face, with the chunk of rock I was flying on laying falling beside me. Not out, can still think, but just barely. Everything's spinning…I try to stand up, but just make it to my knees, wobbly.

Wouldn't mind showing that guy what I can do with these horns…when I get the stars out of my eyes, anyway…

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Wreck on Oct 10, 2006, 3:31pm

Meanwhile Wreck finally arrives a short distance away and seems about to charge into the battle…..then takes a slightly different tact. He produces one of his guns and sneaks up carefully towards the girl with the funky sunglasses, intending to take a hostage.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

As Wreck grabs her in the headlock, he feels her reach back and touch him in the crotch. A tingling sensation occurs, there seems to be a globe of force between his legs.

She says, "3…."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

"……well, this isn't going as planned."

Then he reaches out to pistol whip Clonealee in the head instead.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Oct 10, 2006, 3:54pm

Now, I'm not a master of combat or anything. I pretty much can't be, what with living inside some girl's head. But, as I look and see Wreck and the girl 'struggling', I can't help but wonder what sort of combat manuever they're going through.

'Cause, from here, it just looks like she grabbing his pants.

"Why is she grabbing his pants?"

"I don't think his pants are the only thing she's grabbing."

A moment of silence from the other side. "Wait…you mean she's…eeeeeeeewwwww…"

"Got to say, I agree." I rub my head, starting to wish a few of those pretty stars would come back. "Get a room, you two!"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 10, 2006, 3:58pm

When Wreck pistol whips the girl, a surface piece of her head goes flying off, revealing circuitry. She seems otherwise unfazed. She continues, "2, 1!" very quickly, then Wreck is in an astonishing amount of pain as a small explosion hits him in a very uncomfortable place.

Granted, he'll get better, but that doesn't bode well for anyone.

Geforce looked around as he arrived on the scene, noting that fearless leader was nowhere in sight. That couldn't possible bode well.

He was in the midst of that thought when he saw the piece of Wreck's "hostage" go flying to no effect.

"I. Hate. Robots."

Focusing on the big guy with white hair and a gun, Geforce attempts to completely reverses his gravity and restore at multiple times the intensity once he gets high enough that a fall should be very, very, painful.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 8:05am

Alright, let's see here…

Madrock makes a run at the trenchcoat-clad man, who begins trying to use his geokinesis on her (fortunately, she's able to counter). When she gets close, the man who is glowing black (we'll call him Sunspot for lack of a better name) gets between the two.

Cable gets combination Geforce'd and Heatwave'd, and is soon sparking and on the fritz. He starts taking random shots, none of which come close to hitting anyone, then collapses in a power of circuitry.

Wreck starts to ventilate the blonde, which tears a few holes in her. She still seems functional, and is creating a large ball of force.

Meanwhile, the werewolf throws Reflex at Wreck…hard. Reflex's dampening field will slow down the impact, but the werewolf is leaping in after the, um, thrown weapon.

And it's okay to just be at the scene if you want to, Incubus.

Lex points to Sunspot and starts to focus on heating up the guy who he hopes is also a robot.

«I assume Geforce would help me since we took out the other guy(That is Cable right?) together.»

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 9:56am

There is a collision between Wreck and Reflex, and while it doesn't really hurt either of you, it does screw up the aim momentarily…enough for her to throw the timebomb at Madrock, who was busy flapping her gums. Madrock's knocked cold.

The other thing that screws up Wreck's aim is a few hundred pounds of pissed off Scottish werewolf coming he and Reflex's way, and it looks like the "bear hug mode" has been replaced by "disembowel mode".

Meanwhile, heating up Sunspot actually makes him more powerful (as these robots are designed to mimic the mutant abilities). It's actually somewhat difficult for Geforce to get a handle on him now.

Just so I don't have to keep using vagaries, you're facing analogs of:
Cable (out)
Wolfsbane
Boom Boom (perforated to an extent)
Sunspot
Rictor

"Golly," Wreck mutters as he steadily backs off from the incoming werewolf. "It would look like we're not faring terribly well."

Then he seemingly gets a new idea, as he starts running in a large loop around the monster, trying to stay out of her range.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Protoman on Oct 11, 2006, 10:12am

«Fine, but I'm right, you're wrong!»

Ok….not what I wanted to happen….

"Lets try the other end of the spectrum."

Lex will try to cool Sunspot down and make it easier for Geforce to handle him. Lex begins to drop Sunspot's temperature A LOT.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 10:21am

The change in direction by Wreck does throw the werewolf off, and she starts batting and lunging in a circle. Thankfully, she doesn't connect…yet.

Sunspot picks up the limp form of Madrock. "Keep it up. She'll go with me." The cold powers seem to be working on him, but with a hostage, I don't think Geforce is going to team up (especially given character history).

Meanwhile, Rictor is trying to upset Heatwave's balance with slight earthquakes. Nothing major, but it becomes difficult to focus.

<And yes, you're right and I'm wrong.>

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Wreck on Oct 11, 2006, 10:25am

Wreck continues running, until he ends up directly behind Wolfsbane. Then he leaps onto her back and draws his gun to put a bullet through her head.

"Stay down, Fido!"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Protoman on Oct 11, 2006, 10:29am

Damn it, I can't let her get hurt for something stupid that I tried.

"Ok, just put her down."

Lex looks at Rictor.

"As for you, I've had about enough. Geforce, I have an idea. You handle him. I'll save Madrock."

Lex starts to increase Sunspot's heat as much as he possibly can, at the same time he dives at Sunspot. He's trying to grab him making him drop Roxxy. If all goes as planned he will suck out all of Sunspot's heat includiing what he just gave him to give Lex Super Strength.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 10:36am

Wreck manages to decapitate the Wolfsbane-bot with a spectacularly placed shot. It falls sparking to the ground.

Meanwhile, Heatwave manages to increase his strength and mostly sap the power from the Sunspot robot, but Sunspot's refusing to let Madrock go. Madrock's groggily coming back to consciousness from all the highjinks and temperature changes, though.

We'll say that Geforce is willing and able to at the very least screw up the concentration of Rictor. Meanwhile, the Boom Boom robot, full of holes and sparking slightly, starts uttering nonsense sentences like, "I created the best selling Superman homage ever!" She's also forming another large time bomb.

Wreck turns from the……wreckage of Wolfsbane and again lines up a shot at Boom Boom's timebomb.

I remember something hitting. Me hard. Knocking me out. Remember being pissed. Can feel someone holding me, talking, but the voices are distant, and I can't quite shake out the cobwebs.

Opening one eye halfway, I look up and see the big black guy holding me; trying to use me as a hostage, seems like. Hate the damsel-in-distress routine.

Don't have enough mind to do much, but I start to pour what little focus I have into the ground below us…

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Oct 11, 2006, 10:56am

Shaking off the cobwebs. Reflex quickly examines the battlefield. At super speed he tries to grab Madrock from Sunspot so the boys can cut loose on him/it.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 11:07am

That'll work.

Wreck's shot detonates the time bomb, taking more of the Boom Boom bot with it. It shuts down, sparking.

Reflex manages to run in and grab Madrock, creating an opening for Heatwave to superstrength Sunspot to deactivation.

And we'll say Geforce manages to take out Rictor, just to tie it all up neatly.

So, a quick injury report:

Wreck (groin): Probable.
Madrock (concussion): Questionable, day to day.
Reflex (ribs): Probable.

Sorry, couldn't resist the NFL style.

The best Roxanne is able to do is create a massive tunnel down to it…what looks like a ceiling, made of some kind of high impact metal. It's probably almost a square mile of metal roof down there, you can easily open up about 50 square yards of it, more if you want to push yourself.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Wreck walks to the edge. Then he gives a bizarre smile, does a complete tumble end over end and falls into the hole.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 2:56pm

Once you guys get down into the hole and look around, you realize that you're actually in a 15 foot tall or so alcove leading into a 30 foot tall room, looking out you can see that there are several alcoves of similar size, all of them divided into upper and lower portions. There is a ladder at the egress, so you can descend if you want. Of course, you note that the main 30 foot tall room has a 30 foot tall door…approximately the size of the Sentinels from your eariler expedition.

Sam blasts down to join you. "Well, it certainly is a warehouse," he remarks.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

I just want to make sure you guys are prepared for this, because I'm not positive you are. I have half a mind to take you back to the Blackbird and get us home."

Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Oct 11, 2006, 3:18pm

"Oh, good plan, Wreck. I suppose tactics really don't matter when you can't be killed," mocked Current quietly.
"Even if they're aware of our presence, as long as they won't do anything about it, we have free reign of this place. The perfect oppurtunity to try and sabotage everything and anything we can find… It would make our eventual fight that much easier."

Oh, God, he felt so smart…

"Well, yeah. I mean I just assumed. There's no way in hell that this isn't a trap. Though to be honest after our first few days as a team I've become convinced that pretty much everything is a trap."

Greg leapt down the rest of the way weightlessly, ignoring the ladder. He focuses on the door, creating a massive gravity well above it, hoping to raise it and allow them to advance further.

«I'm assuming the door slides up. If it opens to the side then adjust the location of the the gravity well accordingly»

«Almost backed out, but what the hell. If I start doing the smart thing I wouldn't be me.»

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 11, 2006, 3:27pm

<The door is split in the middle and opens to the sides, with half going into each wall. No problem. >

As Geforce begins to open the door by force, a red button marked "Door Control" near human hand level starts to beep and flash wildly, finally sparking a little as the door opens into a massive hallway. The first part of the hallway is a slight ramp down, you can estimate that the majority of it is about 35-40 feet tall. It, also, is dimly lit and seems very empty. There are doors every so often on either side, and maybe a door way off at the end.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Geforce notes Current's scowl.

"Oh, we've already established that they know we're here. If they were going to attack the moment we did something, they may as well have struck as soon as we got down here."

He looked down the hallway.

"I vote 'See where the ramp leads'."

We get the potential of them hurting each other trying to get us, since they're slower and more bulky. The downside is…they could fall on us, and they aren't exactly light. "You know, Roxanne had a good idea while she was pointlessly complaining. If….whoever that woman was from before is in here somewhere, we might do better trying to find her."

Wreck shrugs.

"I suppose our other option is to go try and tear down the silo before Master Mold has his On switch flipped."

And he smiles halfheartedly.

"Unless their idea of 'purification' now involves a nuclear missile. In which case THAT would be a bad idea."

"I agree. The thing about Sentinels is that the human that controls them tends to be their most vulnerable point. What we're going to do is move to the area that seems human sized because, worse comes to worst, at least we probably won't need to deal actively with Sentinels once we get there. I'll lead."

Cannonball waits for a little bit to make sure no one's going to object.

"Finally," said Current weakly.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

"Stay close to me. And keep your eyes open. Remember, if we run into trouble, try to take one out quickly. Also, keep in mind where the warehouse is: it's the only exit to the surface we've found, so if things get ugly, we do a fighting retreat to there."

Sam starts to walk down the ramp, being very cautious. "It's about 200 yards or so down here on the left. When we get there, we'll need Current to blow the locks, the rest of us need to be ready to go in as soon as that happens, Wreck on point because he's the least likely to die. Meanwhile, Geforce and Heatwave and myself will be the last ones through, since we're probably the most effective should Sentinels crowd the hallway, think of it as a rear guard. Then, we find out what this is all about."

After a while of walking, everyone comes to a man-sized steel door with a camera over it and a keypad to the right. There are a few others in a row (about 5 total) spaced down the hall.

"Current, if you'll do us the honors of seeing what's behind door number one?"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Current pulled back his sleeves theatrically and raised his hands.
"Open sesame!"
He shot out a stream of electricity at the door, mentally aiming for the cumputerized locks.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Wreck pulls both of his guns and prepares to leap through the door.

"Yippee kiay, motherfucker."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 12:25pm

The door sparks and falls slightly ajar, then a klaxon begins ringing in the hallway. "Security Breach: Alpha Sector. Security Breach: Alpha Sector."

Everyone hears the large metal doors opening all down the hallway.

"Darn it, I was hoping that wouldn't happen," says Cannonball. Then, more urgently, "Okay team, move, move, move!"

Wreck goes in, and there's a room filled with computers, lab gear, desks, and…Cannonball? Upon closer inspection, it's a robot that looks like Cannonball, obviously inactive, laying on a table.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Wreck on Oct 12, 2006, 12:31pm

Wreck walks up to the Cannonball bot. Carefully he nudges it with his gun.

"Hey guys, we have a tinker toy Cornball here. If there are no objections, I'm going to blow his mechanical brains out before he wakes up and says hello."

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Alexander "Cadmus" Baptiste on Oct 12, 2006, 12:31pm

Geforce's eyes quickly pass over the Cannonball-bot (Fucking robots), over to the computers.

"Do the more tech savy among us think we can extract any useful information? Maps, more details on what they're working on beyond "Kill all mutants", something like that?"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Oct 12, 2006, 12:34pm

After peeking over Wreck's shoulder, Current slipped through the door after him.
He considered the situation.
He gathered a slight charge of energy within himself and began concentrating slightly… just in case.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 12:42pm

Everyone's able to make their way into the room, although you can hear Sentinels outside in the hallway. Sam is the last through, and barely dodges a blast on his way in. "Yeah, go ahead and get rid of robo-me, I guess," says Sam, "although I'm not sure why they made one. This whole thing is weird."

He looks around briefly. "I'm not sure if the Sentinels are going to shoot through the door or not, so Geforce, be ready to barricade it. And someone who knows something about computers, see what you can find out."

Just then, a door opens to an adjoining room, and you're all faced with a 40-something bleached blonde woman with a lab coat on. "The lot of you excel at walking into traps." There's a shimmer of energy in the doorway, some kind of forcefield between her and you. "I'm sure you'll all find that your filthy mutie X-genes are unable to be accessed in your present position. I will give you this opportunity to beg and plead for your worthless existences."

It's true, the X-Gene isn't working for anyone, I'm not sure how that affects Wreck, to be honest.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Current only barely contained his wrath.
It's a pity this happened, he didn't have time to check he validity of his suspicions… He stepped towards the scientist and the force field, remembering to seem feeble doing so.
"Your speech makes you sound so idiotic and brainlessly bigoted, I really have a hard time believing myself to be inferior to you," he said venomously.

<Yeah, I really have no idea if mutie-nullifiers reverse physical mutations like Wreck's eyes. I'll assume they don't >

Wreck blinks, his teeth-eyes clicking.

Then he draws his guns, pointing one at the woman and the other at the closest computer console to her.

"Well, it's a good thing these aren't mutants, isn't it?"

And he fires off several shots at the console.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 12:52pm

"And yet, this is not the first time that I have successfully captured you and rendered you ineffective, old man," replies the scientist with a sneer.

When Wreck shoots the console, it just sort of blows up in the standard pile of sparks. "I hope that made you feel better," she says.

<I know that Angel's been unable to use the wings in the past…not sure how it all works out, but having you able to see is better than not seeing.>

Geforce couldn't feel it anymore. He never really noticed the sensation until it was gone, but he was tapped in the Earth's gravitaional field. And with his connection to it broken he suddenly felt empty inside.

"Oh, balls."

Based on a model of X-Sentinels used by his other apprentice, Mr. Lang, I created the Y-Sentinels, similar in power and appearance to the New Mutants, hoping to use them to wreak destruction and cause the blame to be shifted to mutants."

She pauses.

"However, my research and expenditures quickly mounted to a point where powering these Sentinels became impossible. It was a stroke of luck to encounter the old man, and drain his mutant energy in order to power the Y-Sentinels and enact my master plan! However, you didn't take the easy answer of 'the entire complex blew up' that I gave you, and determined to find your way back before I could complete the last Y-Sentinel. No matter, though…soon you will all witness the back-up plan, the new Master Mold! Within hours, he will be complete, to purify the planet of mutants once and for all!"

She cackles diabolically.

"I intend the group of you to be Master Mold's first victims. Think of the import your deaths will serve: christening mankind's salvation!"

"As for the Master Mold side of the plan, I was hoping to allow him time to create more Sentinels…legions of them. Unfortunately, it looks like he will have to do all the work himself."

The room is shaking even more.

"Wait…Master Mold should not be causing this level of tremor! Something's wrong!"

She runs off, forcefield and mutant dampers still intact.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

The field's like a solid metal wall, essentially. It doesn't spark or anything, it's just a see through barrier.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Geforce reached out mentally for it, but he still couldn't feel the planet's gravitational field. His powers hadn't returned. With that he eyed Madrock suspiciously but figured now wasn't the time for that discussion.

The barrier holds at first, it takes a few strikes with the rock to open it up, after which everyone's powers return.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

The next several rooms are kind of a man-sized suite of living quarters and labs…nothing really crazy. Then, you encounter a hatch, on the other side of which is a shaft with a ladder leading down several hundred feet. At the bottom of the ladder is the twisted body of the female scientist, apparently shaken off the ladder by an earth tremor.

"I'm just going to go make sure she doesn't need any help," says Cannonball, blasting down the shaft.

He looked at the corpse that was attempting to terrorize them just a few minutes earlier. He felt that being sorry for her was the right thing to feel… but it just wasn't there.

Buck up bitch… plenty of time to think about that later.

Geforce jumped down the shaft weightlessly, wondering on the way down how the New Mutants team managed to recruit so many of the cold, careless variety of mutant. Even their most innocent member seemed to be drifting that way recently…

Beyond the Hatch…

The sheer enormity of the room you enter into is pretty astonishing. Cables, wires, and machines take up a good amount of its space, although it is certainly dominated by a Sentinel easily five times larger than the ones previously seen. A computerized voice says: "T minus five minutes. Preparing auxillary systems. Initializing Master Program."

All aberrant thoughts drifted from his mind. This was Master Mold. Life and death.

"What are we waiting." Golem rises up in front of us, but I add a few improvements to the original design; spikes line down his back, four arms instead of the requisite two, compact the materials to make him harder and stronger and bigger than before. He looks like a midget compared to Master Mold, but it's better than nothing. "Golem, kick his ass!"

He charges in, diving straight for the Sentinel's ankles.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 2:57pm

Alright, Reflex speeds around the room, and finds control panels, read out screens, the works.

One of the screens is giving technical data that you don't quite understand, but next to it is a picture of Master Mold with different elements changing colors, and arrows, and small text of mathematical equations. The colors and equations seem to be in flux, but the legs and lower torso are in solid green with no notations next to them. A noise starts being made behind the torso unit, a crackle of electricity, and that area turns orange on the display and gets a lot of notations.

"T-minus Four minutes, thirty seconds. Re-initializing power matrix."

"here goes nothing…"

Curt starts randomly pressing buttons at superspeed…..speeding from one panel to the next. Hoping not only to disrupt the energy flow…but maybe some of the data input as well.

Oh, how much he wished he could have replied to Reflex, telling the idiot to shut up.
He had never planned on shooting some kind of magic beam at the Sentinel, trying to deactivate it. It would have required extra concentration he wasn't going to spare.
His EMP was an area-of-effect thing. At least by default, it would take down everything within a few hundred feet. And that's what he was trying to do right now. Maybe it would break the loading process…

He'd only done it a few times in his life, but it wasn't hard. It just felt like he was doing extremely difficult calculations in his head, although his mind seemed suspiciously blank.

"Cannonball…" he dragged out of himself.
"Take me… to something that looks important…"

The computerized voice says: "Please input user ID and passcode" to Reflex.

Meanwhile, Cannonball blasts off, grabbing Current, heading upwards. "You tell me when you see something."

There are platforms, computers, and machines all up the massive silo, but right now the most active ones seem to be near the upper torso.

Suddenly, the upper egress to the room opens, and about 5 Sentinels are above it. "Precision firing mode. Collateral damage: unacceptable."

Oh, just lovely…

Greg eyed Sam and Current. They were the team's best shot at the moment. They had to keep the Sentinels off them. He focuses on the nearest two Sentinels, then the area between them, creating a massive gravity well intending to smash the two Sentinels together.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 3:13pm

Current's in position. Geforce and Golem are attempting to fight the Sentinels, which is distracting them for the time being, but isn't going to last long. The Sentinels are carefully trying to line up a shot on Current, but Golem manages to get in the way.

"Alright Almond, I think it's go time," says Sam.

Then he yells, "As soon as you see Current light up, get the heck out of here! Use the hatch, fly, do whatever you need to do, just get out!"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Looking up at the incoming Sentinels, Wreck sighs.

"Alright, time for my usual. Blocking with my face."

He pulls both of his guns and starts blasting up at the robots while yelling and generally trying to draw attention to himself.

"Hey bastards! Over here!"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

It was curious how happy he always felt when doing something big with his powers, mused Current. Well… maybe not happy, but excited. Lively… And it wasn't just adrenaline either…

Of course, he didn't complain…
The light around him intensified, but started to stream around him like weird energy tentacles. He pressed his palms against the huge, cold metal plates of Master Mold. And directed a large portion of his energy towards it as fast as he could. He could feel the energy flying off from himself like his skin just exploded painlessly.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 3:35pm

As Current does the EMP, the control panel by Reflex begins to flash red on the torso unit. A siren starts to sound: "Warning: Power containment matrix ruptured. Energy transfer outside accepted parameters. Energy transfer outside accepted parameters. Energy transfer outside accepted parameters."

The Sentinels pause in mid-flight. "Collateral damage: Acceptable." Reflex (at super speed) *just* manages to get Wreck out of the way of an energy blast. Golem is being blasted to cinders as quick as he can reform, and Geforce notes that there are some unusual gravity patterns, possibly caused by the malfunctioning power system.

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

He was new to using his powers this way but Greg definitely could tell one thing from the strange patterns he could feel.

"We need to get the hell out of here."

Yanking a large peice of machinery out of it's normal gravitational pull, Geforce directs it at the nearest Sentinel, trying to keep their attention anywhere but the hatch.

"You heard the man. Retreat!"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

"I think you should move…" Current reminded Cannonball gently.
He felt abnormally serene, despite the ongoing chaos around him. Explosions, blinking lights and yells. It was annoying, to a degree, but still…
He felt great. He felt more alive than in several weeks. And even the seemingly constant anger at the back of his heart was gone for the moment.

He was powerful…
Current smiled at his self-aggrandization. This reminded him of something though.
"Mr. Guthrie," he slowly began, "don't ever pamper us. Most people on this team are annoying, whiny brats, and they deserve a strict talking-to. Please just stand firm, restore discipline again…"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Sacred Digits on Oct 12, 2006, 4:08pm

Cannonball takes off, through the ceiling. Geforce is able to create enough cover to take off after him, if he so desires. Madrock and Incubus can also take the same route. And Reflex, well, he can run up after him…

I'm going to assume that everyone loves their teammates enough to take them along.

As you emerge onto the surface, there's one thing everyone discovers…there were more Sentinels than you initially expected. Almost a dozen come out of the ground, chasing the fleeing New Mutants…and you're all losing ground.

Meanwhile, the Master Mold chamber blows up behind you, exactly as it was earlier predicted to.

Reality was starting to sink in and he hated it. The threats to his life were becoming more apparent. Energy blasts were flying between them, some of them in turn kicking up cloud of dirt and rocks. Damn robots were too fast…
A beam passed by a few feet to his' and Cannonball's left. He was slowing him down, he realized…

He wanted to be a hero…

Current began struggling out of Cannonball's grip. While holding tight, he just wasn't prepared for resistance. Current was free, falling VERY painfully to the far-off ground.
Slowly and painfully he rose to his feet.

"EVERYBODY RUN!!! I THINK I CAN STOP THEM!!!! DON'T WAIT FOR ME, JUST GET TO THE FUCKING JET AND TAKE OFF!!! GO!!!!!"

Lex turns around to face the Sentinels again.

"Hey, Wreck," he slowly said…
He held out his hand like a gun and pointed it at Wreck's forehead.

Sentinels bearing down. Madrock running, Cannonball trying to evac as many people as he can. It looks like a futile effort…there's just too many. Incubus and Heatwave are trying to trim the numbers, but it's not working real well.

Until one person steps up. One teammate, making the sacrifice. One person that was more or less not interfered with, allowing him to execute his plan. One person, who will post in a second.

<I've interacted via PM with one player, and I agree with what they're about to do. Therefore…Current…take it away.>

Re: Mission 4: Joyride
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Oct 13, 2006, 10:56am

Current felt confident. Why shouldn't he be, he was quite powerful. Probably the most powerful member of this team, he reasoned… Yeah… Probably.
If only he wasn't cursed with this withered body. It limited him. Not only his powers, but his mind as well. He wished he was free from that wretched grievance somehow. He should probably have been able to transfer his whole body into pure electricity, but it would give him a few lethal strokes or something. He should have been able to move electrons themselves, but it would only give him brain hemorrage! He should have been something more than human, but he was just a frail… old… man.

Tendons of electricity snaked around him now.
He confirmed the situation. His team-mates were lazing around. They were too close.
"How about you LEAD them away now?" he called out to Cannonball.
He'd be the one that saves the day, no one else. Half of them were incompetent and couldn't be trusted with saving their lives… and shouldn't be placed in this danger.
"I'll be just fine," he said with a far-off smile. When he would be done, they'd finally see how good he was. Not just an old man like they called him…

Well, it was just a dozen sentinels or so…
He directed his energies before himself. The air was abuzz. The Sentinels were firing heavily now. They seemed smart enough to realize who the REAL threat was… They'd arrive in a few seconds. He still felt confident, but there was a slight fearful scribbling in his heart.

He changed the electric charges around himself a bit, pushing Wreck away. He didn't have time to check if Cannonball picked him up, and if they were all retreating nicely yet.
Then he held out his hands and let lightning hit the big lightning rods. It was a cobweb of interconnected arcs. The patterns of various shapes of blue and white were quite beautiful, he noticed.
Nothing made him feel more alive than seeing the Sentinels cracking and nearly melting at some spots from the pure output of energy.
But they were adapting. They were holding out. He distributed his energy too equally…
It looked like it needed some effort after all.
He increased his output. The scribbling in his heart got a bit stronger. It didn't matter though. The thunderballs and strings of electricty were now literally tearing holes through the robots. They were starting to explode and crush into each other. Flawless victory.
His chest sort of hurt now…

He cut off the power… but nothing happened. The electricity kept streaming out of him. His grin faded away. Without a target, the lightning turned upwards, dissipating away in the sky… but it kept coming. He felt like sick now. It was going too fast… This wasn't supposed to happen. He was really, really masterful with the use of his powers, it was only his BODY that was keeping him back! This wasn't supposed to happen…
He keeled over to his knees from the pain and clutched his chest. He had annoying double-vision. More so than usual…
He didn't want to die. His whole existance was based on that fact. He wanted to live…
He felt relief when he noticed that the energy was giving out fast now. Then out ceased abruptly.
He still felt pain though.

It would all be all right though. He had done it. He'd succeeded in what none of the others would have managed. He won, defeating deadly danger for the sake of his team-mates… or was it his own? Well… Everything would be all right.

The approaching ground was the last thing he saw before his vision went black.

It takes me a solid minute to follow the path and reach the room again, having to work my way around a downed Sentinel to get back in. Sparks are flowing, miniature explosions. But it's still quiet.

"Hello?" I call out, trying to get a bearing. "Hello! Where is-"

Then I see him. Lying there. Burned. Smoking. Not moving. And then it all makes sense. "No!" I run over to Current's side, tripping along the way and falling just beside him. "Nononono…" Push him once, twice, three times, trying to get him to stir up, to say something to do anything. "Wake up…come, Current, wake up?" I look up to Mr. Cannonball, see him floating there, silent. "Do something!"

Re: Mission 4: Joyride

Cannonball looks at Madrock. "Sometimes…there's nothing we can do, Roxanne. I've seen this happen before…to Doug…it almost happened to me once…"
