NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 1:38pm

Rogue takes a seat in the control room, and she sends a message across the mansion over the intercom:

"All active New Mutants, this is Rogue callin'. Assemble in the Danger Room, ya'll have a train to catch. That means all of ya. Don't keep me waitin."

«Checked in:

1. Orchestra
2. Wreck
3. Zephyr
4. Almond and Marisol

Every member of the team is here, so anybody that comes in late can just jump right in.

Pester will be hanging around to help, but to make things fair I'll only use him if somebody requests his powers specifically.»

From the back of the room, Pester broadcasts as much of FreeBird as he can remember from his extensive Guitar Hero experience. He botches the middle a little.

"As to your question Marisol, ya'll are gonna be movin' a package from point A to point B. I know yer all smart enough to know it's not gonna be that easy, but try to look surprised when it happens."

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 4:32pm

The Danger Room fades away to reveal what looks like an average Manhattan subway station. (If anybody is confused as to what a subway station is like, feel free to ask. I can imagine some people in the Midwest or somewhere not knowing offhand what it would be like, so it’s understandable). The C-Train to be exact, not that this will prove especially important to your mission.

A small package appears in the middle of the Danger Room. It is wrapped with a red bow, and has a tag that says “Happy Birthday” written in the tag.

On top of the package is a subway map, with the directions very clearly plotted out. There is a circle where you are. The circle is labeled “A.” A circle a few stops down the C line is labeled “B.”

The C train can be seen a hundred or so feet away, and it looks like the doors are about to start closing.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 4:39pm

The trains are not especially crowded. There are about 7 people aboard each car. As you are heading to the train, you can clearly see 5 men in burly trenchcoats climb aboard 5 equidistant (They’re the same distance away from each other) train cars. They all start screaming something incomprehensible.

«
Just so there's no confusion, Wreck is fine.»

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks

Zephyr hears something crack inside the box. Any time it is moved after that, there will be a slight jangling sound from inside the box.

"But how is this an exercise of teamwork if we're all on different cars?"

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 4:44pm

As you get closer, you can clearly hear one of the Trenchcoat men screaming something about mutant rights, and how the damn, dirty norms will never keep mutants down again.

The man then whips out an assault rifle, and unleashes a spread across the ceiling of the train car. Everybody in the train and on the platform hears it, they all gasp and hit the ground. The train starts pulling away.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks

"Excellent." I rush towards one of the the train cars, hoping Marisol is keeping up.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 4:49pm

«I'm just going to assume everyone jumps into the first car, unless anybody specifically says differently.»

The train is now moving at normal speed, and you can clearly hear what the Trench-man is saying. He's waving his gun around at the civilians, and screaming into the emergency intercom, telling the conductor not to slow down or he'll shoot a bunch of people.

He suddenly turns and catches a glimpse of Zephyr, and begins firing at him, as he clearly wasn't there before. An old man near the end of the car catches a bullet to his chest.

Wreck goes unnoticed.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Zephyr on Mar 7, 2007, 4:52pm

Marisol immediately jumped towards the enemy. Even if it was too aggressive, she had to do something before more people were hurt. She literally tried to pounce hit, at the same time extending parts of herself between him and the people, trying to shield them.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Orchestra on Mar 7, 2007, 4:53pm

Extended Limbs. Excellent. I latch on to Marisol's shadow and take it into me. Once I'm settled I begin mimicking her movements and try to shield the bystanders, all the while, trying to ignore her thoughts and memories.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Marisol Morales on Mar 7, 2007, 4:54pm

If I were outside, I would just fly around, dodge the shots, counterattack. Standard procedure. But I'm inside. Space is limited. I'm pretty screwed.

I duck under one of the seats and try to send a gust flying down the car, knock the guy off his feet.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 4:55pm

Marisol's and Orchestra's actions pay off, and they manage to keep anyone else from getting hurt. The old man in the back slumps over, bleeding heavily and gasping. The rest of the civilians are terrified, but orderly.

Marisol takes down the gunman, and she feels that there's something sharp underneath his shirt. Something sharp and moving…

Zephyr's attack feels like a small punch in Marisol's back, as she has taken down the attacker. Her appendage leaves a slight gash in teh gunman's chest.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Zephyr on Mar 7, 2007, 4:57pm

Marisol more or less carefully cut open the gunman's shirt. She made sure to be careful.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 4:58pm

After she gets his shirt open, she sees why he was ranting and raving about mutant rights. He has a full set of pointy teeth, opening and closing where his stomach should be. It is groaning with pain, but aside from that the gunman should be alright.

The assault rifle is still in his hand, but is pointed at a wall.

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 5:33pm

As Marisol felt around, every seat she came across revealed another civilian, all in varying states of gratitude and hysteria.

When she gets around half of them revealed, the culprit appears.

A tall, very skinny man is standing near the front of the train, with translucent tendrils extended into the bodies of the rest of the invisible civilians. He is grunting and sweating, as he tries to maintain his effect.

The tall man stops what he's doing. He brings his tendrils back into his body, and sort of just stands there, feeling very sheepish.

The train has just skipped a second stop.

"Yeah, what they said. And I'll…blow air on you. And then you'll be sorry."

All of the civilians reappear, none the worse for wear. They're all quite relieved, and express gratitude toward the team.

I slither towards the man and wrap myself around him, my face pressed close near his.

"I like obedient food. Now tell us what you're doing here."

The skinny man spills it like a torn sack of flower.

"Oh, uh, I'm sorry mister! I didn't wanna hurt noone, honest! But that big man made me do it… Aw I'm really sorry I caused so much trouble, they said it was somethin' about mutant rights, and I'd o' been a traitor if I hadn't! Please don't eat me! I'll be real good! Honest!"

"They said we could only get what we want if we make a stir!"

I nod at Wreck. "Good plan. Unless we want to re-enact the end of Speed…" I start heading towards the next car.

"Good. Now, if you really want to live, the tendrils. Set them out again."

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 5:50pm

The tall man complies. He sets out the tendrils again.

The next car is remarkably quiet. Every passenger is sitting calmly in place, staring straight ahead. The trenchcoat man here is looking at Zephyr, snickering evilly.

«We're nearing up on the end.»

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Orchestra on Mar 7, 2007, 5:53pm

I absorb his now very different shadow and while I've got to look like him for the time being (as Pester would say, his face was very much ass) the tendrils could be useful.

"Are these things icey or what?" I ask, knocking out the man with a few of them.

I take a few steps away from the trenchcoat man - really don't like his snickering. Did I see him on an episode of To Catch A Predator? Texas week? Creep.

Suddenly, the man's arms reach toward the New Mutants. Every civilian on the train stands up, and slowly starts to stumble over to you, mumbling:

"Kill… Kill…"

Marisol turned very large and tentacle-y, then moved ahead to grab a hold of all the people in the wagon and press them to the ground as non-painfully as she could.

Marisol succeeds, and the civilians just lay there, unable to move but still mumbling.

The trenchcoat man stands there and starts cursing at Marisol. Suddenly, Wreck feels something happening in his brain…

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 6:07pm

Before he can take over Wreck's brain, he is knocked unconscious. His hold over all the civilians is broken.

1 guy left!

The next guy is standing in a (really) empty car. The conductor is unconscious on the floor, and the T-man is simply working the controls. He doesn't see anyone approach.

Wreck blinks. Quietly walks up to the final guy, draws his gun and puts it to his head.

"Bang, you're dead. Let us off at the next stop."

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 6:14pm

With a sigh of resignation, the conductor does exactly that. Pester comes up behind him and clubs him with his forearm, rending him unconscious.

The New Mutants open all the train doors, and exit. As they leave the area, they hear growling and horrified screaming from the car with the second trenchcoat man.

"What now?"

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks
Post by Pester on Mar 7, 2007, 6:21pm

Zephyr sees the source of the problem. A small group of full sized bears are tearing apart the civilians in the train, including the trenchcoat man himself. The trenchcoat man wasn't kidding about killing everybody on the train.

When she sees the groups' confusion, Rogue's exasperated voice chimes in over the intercom:

"Mutant rights activists, remember? Mutant? Why didn't anyone check under the seats?"

Re: NM Training Mission 2: Terror on the Tracks

"BLAST!" I cast away the tendril man's shadow and command it to attack one of the creatures as I steal one of theri shadows.

This I like. Lots of power. I rush one.

"Okay. Mutant activists. All right I get that." I look up, shake my head. "Being fair - and I could be wrong, I've never been on a subway - getting attacked by a bear is pretty unlikely to happen on a train."

Rogue addresses Zephyr's complaint:

"What happens around here that's likely to happen?"

14: Bear Attack, spawned from animated and enlarged toys.

Rogue comes down looking at her team. She actually looks kind of happy, "Not bad work, to be honest. During the mission, only one civilan death. You took the bad guys down pretty smoothly, no unnecessary deaths. You covered each others backs pretty well. Granted, you should have checked the "bombs" a little more carefully, but all in all, I think you guys showed a huge improvement."
