New Mutants West/Power Rangers #1

Cover: Rita Repulsa and Carmen Rosewell standing back to back, standing atop the planet.

Title: Initial Aggression.

Author's Note: Because Proto demanded it! Because I realized New Mutants…IN SPACE/ThunderCats is a stupid idea! Because I'm really bored and school isn't starting until friday!

Angel Grove, California. Just another small town like hundreds of others throughout the country, of course some would say it’s not at all like the others for a few reasons, the first being that it’s in California (which instantly makes it better) the second being the alarming number of super-villain attacks that occur there.

Truth be told, aside from a visit by some b-lister named Tiger Shark, who tried to use the town as a hideout from the West Coast Avengers, no real super-villains had ever stepped foot in the town, it was just much easier list the various damage the occurring under ‘super-villain attack’ on the insurance claim forms than identify what was really causing all of the damage – giant monsters.

Insane isn’t it? That in a world where men and women can fly a rinky-dink town in California would rather claim to be plagued by super-villains rather than admit to their town being a frequent sufferer of monster attacks. Irregardless, the town was lucky to have its own defenders – The Power Rangers.

No one was actually sure where the Power Rangers came from, who they really were, or where they got their amazing powers, but they showed up just when the town needed them most and for that its citizens were eternally grateful. Unknown to most, the Rangers were actually five ordinary local teenagers…well…Billy’s genius wasn’t exactly ordinary, but for the most part no one would peg this non-descript multi-racial group of teens to be the defenders of Angel Grove, and arguably, the planet.

“So, like, I’m starting to get a little worried about Zack.” stated Kimberly, leaning against the fence from her seat at the top of the bleachers.

“Really?” asked Billy, reclining two steps below her, reading a copy of the latest article by Reed Richards. He didn’t actually care what she had to say, he knew it would be vapid, and lower his IQ several points, but in the back of his mind he thought that if he continued to humor her maybe she’d set him up with one of her friends.

“Yeah, it’s like…” she paused a moment, not to ponder her words, but to chew her bubblegum. “…well, we live in California, and it’s like really hot here.”

“Granted.”

“Well, take a look at Zack.” she says, pointing straight ahead where Zack and Jason were engaged in a heated game of two-on with some of classmates. “He’s always playing basketball or break dancing or…” Break dancing while playing basketball she thought, because, that’s actually what he begun doing before she could finish her sentence. “…and he’s always doing that while wearing black and stuff, and I keep hearing stuff on the news about football players like, passing out at training camp, and I don’t want Zack to like…get heatstroke or whatever.”

Billy sighed, pushed his glasses up and put down his scientific journal.

“Kimberly, while that is very considerate of you, and full of much more foresight than I thought you possible of possessing, it’s not really an issue. You see, since black absorbs more heat his body will sweat more, thus, cooling his down. For heat stroke to be a real issue…”

“…wait, you know, like, forget what I just said. It’s not even the heatstroke thing anymore; it’s just the all black thing. Have you noticed that? I’ve got a full wardrobe at home but ever since becoming the pink ranger I’ve replaced it with pink stuff. You’ve all done the same. Well, not Jason, I swear he just wears the same red shirt everyday but whatever. I just think it’s weird. Do you think it’s like a side effect of being Power Rangers?”

Billy pondered Kimberly’s question for a few moments.

“Now that you mention it, I have noticed that. Alpha 5 and I have been running experiments to determine the long-term effects of the morphing tech on human DNA. We’ve theorized that even short-term exposure to morphological energy…”

Pretty sure he just made up the word morphological. thought Kimberly.

“…I’ve been corresponding with Dr. Hank McCoy and he’s been very interested in my work, he even promised to share my work with some of his colleagues, and SHIELD! Can you believe that Kimberly? Imagine a whole battalion of Power Rangers! Imagine the both the military and scientific application of our powers? We could finally launch a mission to Mars.”

“Yeah that sounds great, Billy. Really.” before she could become any more sarcastic, the family chirp of their morphers went off. Jason and Zack quickly ended their basketball game and rushed over to meet their teammates.

“Bout time, we haven’t had any actions in weeks.” grinned Jason, much to the chagrin of his teammates. It was true, they hadn’t actually had to morph for quite some time, and Zordon rarely contacted them. Was it just a coincidence that Rita had decided to strike just as one of their own had taken a trip out of town?

“What’s going on Zordon?” asked, Zack, raising his communicator; all that come through was static.

“Rangers…town…attacked…mustn’t…fight….Angel Grove.”

“Uhh…Z-man…did you switch to T-mobile or something? Can’t hear your anything, man.” persisted Zack, unfortunately, he wasn’t sure the message made it through.

“This doesn’t bode well.” stated Billy, sitting up. “It looks like we’ll have to morph and split up to find the disturbance.”

“Now that’s what I like to hear.” chuckled Jason. “It’s Morphin’ Time!”

“Mastodon!”

“Pteradactyl!”

“Triceratops!”

Billy, Zack and Kimberly all turned to the still unmorphed Jason, who seemed a little lost.

“Oh…right…sorry…it’s just that…”

Kimberly sighed through her helmet before saying:

“Saber-toothed Tiger.”

“Tyrannosaurus!” Jason barked, morphing, as Billy and Zack tried to hold in their laughter. “Let’s go team!”

“Rangers! The town is being attacked!” barked Zordon. “You mustn’t fight; leave Angle Grove as soon as you can!”

“I fear your warning falls on deaf ears Zordon.” whined Alpha 5, buzzing around the command center. Lately something had been cutting off Zordon’s contact with this plane of existence, and just when the rangers needed his advice most, they couldn’t hear him. To make matters worse, they were down a ranger.

“What should we do Zordon? The rangers can’t win this fight alone.”

Zordon let out a sigh. For the first time in his existence he truly didn’t know what to do.

“I fear for their lives Alpha…without help they will surely perish. We need to summon aid for them.”

“Ai-yi-yi-yi-yi!” screamed Alpha. “What should we do? We have some backup morphers, should I summon more teenagers with attitude?”

Alpha’s master looked at him oddly for a moment.

“What? No. I’ve never heard anything more ridiculous in my life. What we need now, more than anything else is band of amoral warriors who can do the things our Rangers cannot. Get me the New Mutants West.”

—-

“I take it you need that suit to cover up some disfiguration that came along with your powers.” mused Paige, standing at the doorway to the Institute’s West Coast branch in San Francisco.

While the New Mutant West member may have had a smug look on her face, Trini Kwan, the yellow ranger, was looked from pleased under her helmet. For the first time in years she and her parents had taken a trip to the bay area to visit some relatives and the next thing she knows a distress call is coming in from Alpha 5 telling her to fetch the New Mutants West.

She had seen stories about them on the news; they were little more than a band of mutant freaks and killers. She didn’t have the faintest idea why the Power Rangers would need their help, but the order had come directly from Zordon.

“Do I look disfigured to you?” asked Trini, removing her helmet in anger.

“No you do not.” swooned Teddy, strolling by and catching at glimpse of Trini with Paige. He could barely stop his heart from beating out of his chest. Could this day get any better? Not only was one of the Power Rangers at the door to his school, but she had revealed her secret identity. Partly anyway, he had no clue who she actually was, but that didn’t matter.

“Keep it in your pants, Pinko.” sighed Paige. “Who the hell are you?”

“How don’t you know who the Power Rangers are Paige?” questioned Teddy. “They’re the defenders of Angel Grove!”

“And here I am without my autograph book.” responded Paige sarcastically. “I ask again: Who the hell are you? Oh, and a bonus question: What do you want?”

“I don’t have time to explain!” Trini complained. “My team needs help and I was sent here to get the New Mutants West. We don’t have a lot of time, my friends are in danger!”

As she finishes the sentence, an explosion rocks the entire school building.

Not the fuck again. thinks Paige, rushing to the source, Trini and Teddy following her. She isn’t exactly sure why Teddy is following her, what with the now powers thing, but she’s not his mother, it’s not her job to worry about that.

“Teddy get the hell out of here! Paige, do what you do!” shouts Havok, firing a blast of energy at one of the strange gray beings swarming the mansion and attacking the team.

At the center of the fray stood a woman Paige had never hoped to see again, doing battle with her boyfriend.

“Rosewell!” she screamed, animating the floor so that it launched her forward.

“How about a kiss?” the villainess smirked, swatting Paige away with her free hand, the other blocking Army’s attacks.

“What the hell are these things?” asked Jamie, his clones doing their best to fight off the attack.

“Puddies!” replied Trini, in a heated battle with two of them. “But I’ve never faced ones these strong before!”

“You haven’t seen anything yet.” stated Carmen, leaping over both Paige and Army before pressing a button on her watch. Instantly, the collars all of the Puddies were wearing released a gas that none of the assembled could identify, but Paige was easily able to identify it as MGH, seeing the Puddies begin displaying random abilities.

“Destroy everything.”

—-

Back in Angel Grove the Power Rangers weren’t faring any better than the New Mutants West.

“What…what do we do Billy?” groaned Zack, trying to pry himself off the ground, while Billy flailed in the air. Before them stood a monstrous being that they never would’ve guessed was once human.

In a past life she had a name, but now she was nothing more than a force of nature. The purple skinned and scaly creature roared as it twirled Billy around with its powers.

“Good job Gravita.” congratulated the Green Ranger, as he approached his comrade, dragging Jason and Kimberly by their legs.

“Rita will be pleased.”

Oro, I wish you were a girl, so I wouldn't question my masculinity when I say this: I love you.

I would actually like to see this guide if it really exists, but I'm not really sweating over it. I realized halfway through that I wasn't treating the source material with any sort of reverence but then I realized I didn't care. You guys are just lucky I had the tact to stop Zack from dropping f-bombs all over the place.

Glad you thought it was funny (since I do try) And yes Del, you do want to read it.

Even the Power Rangers show can't keep its history straight half the time. Don't sweat it.

Continuity is not what bugs me. It was his way having the door open for New Mutants West. Guess part of me would of liked them better as the misunderstood villians that weren't going to take crap from anybody. Especially not the evil baddies from the Power Ranger Universe…I'll shutup now.

Eh, I really just like playing off the fact that NMW are a pretty amoral team most of the time. I almost went and did the usual 'teams meet, then fight, before joining' but I realized the NMW would obliterate the Rangers and eat the corpses.
