New Mutants Unlimited #51

*Just a very brief li'l fic.*

Cover: Faceshot of Cain, half of his face is masked and the other half has his hair swept across the forehead so that it just falls short of the eyes and falls over the other side of his face. His eyes are shadows and he appears downcast.

Title: Axioms

He crouched on the edged of the roof of the building, watching. The night had fully enveloped the day a scant few hours ago, the bustling activity of the city being replaced by a filtered silence. As fleeting as he knew the silence would be, it was something that Cain relished. Something rare; with an empty beauty to it.

He dropped his shirt to the side where it landed on his trousers and shoes, wondering why he had even bothered to wear them. Wearing the uniform he had worn below the clothes he just removed, he slid his mask on and glanced down at the street again. A boy barely into his late teens was approaching a woman from behind, eyeing her purse. There was no question about his intent. Cain dropped from the rood, landing silently behind him and knocking him out with a quick blow to the back of the head. The woman’s would-be assailant hit the floor hard, and Cain was gone again before she realised that someone had been behind her.

It would not mean anything, though. Another night and the would-be assailant would simply attack someone else. Steal from someone else. And no-one would be there to stop it.

Unfortunate.

The temptation to take some action that would prevent such a thing from happening was great. Cain notched an arrow and lined it up with the boy’s elbow, and pulled the bowstring back. He kept the string taut and stood there for a moment, ready to let go. Every possible move that he could make to prevent that boy from ever attacking anyone was laid before his eyes.

No.

With a light sigh he released the string very slowly, placing the arrow back in his quiver. Cain pushed the temptation out of his mind as he ran his eyes over the prone figure from above. He left it as it was for the woman to call in if she had the sense of mind to do so. With no evidence. And that meant, most likely, no incarceration.

It seemed that limited prevention was all that Cain could enact.

The woman simply ran when she saw the felled boy, just as he began to stir again. Cain dropped back down beside him, considering what action to take as the boy gawked up at him. It took him a fair few moments before he could bring himself to speak.

“Well? What are you waiting for?” he asked impetuously with an expression of incredulousness on his face.

“I know what you spook types are like. Just get it over with! Whatever you’re going to do, just do it!”

Cain arched an eyebrow in slight confusion, but his face mask kept the confusion from being portrayed. Most of his attention was spent on studying the would-be thief in front of him. His face was twisted in a unique combination of confusion, fear and anger. His skin was pale with beads of sweat forming abundantly on his forehead. His hair was thin and lank, the colour dull. The paleness of his skin and his withdrawn, sunken eyes suggested that he was dehydrated. His breathing pattern suggested exhaustion. When was the last time he slept? When was the last time he ate? He appeared as if he might have passed out again at any moment. Cain stepped towards him and he cringed instantly, shutting his eyes.

When he finally opened them again he found a couple of notes at his feet and Cain gone.

***

There’s something… I need to find. Why can’t I tell? I know who I am. Cain. I am a soldier. I have everything I need here. So why does it seem as if there is something else? What am I missing?

He stared down at the alleyway where the boy still stood.

I can not understand them. Someday… maybe.

I like the whole "Will I cripple him, or will I not" angle. It's more original than killing him.

Thanks . I didn't really want to go down the route of killing him for a few reasons; the unoriginality of it, the fact that it would go against what he stands for and another reason that I'm going to look into later.

I liked it, but wished it was longer.

Yeah, I thought it was too short when I finished writing it, but then couldn't think of anything to add .
