New Mutants Unlimited #34

Title: What You Don't Know Might Just Kill You

Cover: A completely black cover, splattered with blood.

Note: This story begins just before New Mutants 108, the middle during New Mutants 109, and the ending happens during the two week break.

The mutant never saw the attack coming. He was walking outside, just enjoying the quiet. What his mom used to call the calm before the storm. He suddenly felt a sharp pain in the back of his neck. He was unconscious before he had even hit the ground.

Minutes…maybe it was hours…later, he opened his eyes and found himself encased in a metallic coffin. He could hear voices outside his claustrophobic prison. No words really stood out, but he knew there was someone out there.

He opened his mouth to call for help, but he quickly discovered that even that simple little movement was difficult for him. His head felt like it was full of white noise. He couldn’t remember anything. Not his mother’s face, not even his own name. All he could remember was a simple phrase, “I am a New Mutant.” The mutant clutched to that thought like it was a lifeline. It repeated over and over in his mind, a mantra that drove some of the static away. But, the pain just would not stop. Mercifully, after ten minutes of this empty existence, the mutant faded back to unconsciousness.

****

Hours…maybe it was days… later, the mutant opened his eyes again, feeling pain rip its way through his entire body. Earlier, he had vaguely felt his body vibrating, as if the entire world was shaking beneath him, but he could not force his eyes to open until this new pain had arrived. It felt like he had been in a tremendous impact…and he had…died? But, that made no sense. He was very clearly alive…at least he thought he was.

The voices were back, but this time, much louder. The mutant could make out words, “Our scout unit was destroyed!”

“Was he discovered?”

“It does not seem so. Its destruction was completely accidental.”

“Accidental? Do they suspect anything?”

“Doubtful. The New Mutants have enough problems of their own right now.”

“All right. We will continue work on the subject.”

“But, the plan…”

“Our initial plan failed. It is not a major concern. We have other plans in place. Carry on your work…”

The pain faded, and seemingly random words names came to the mutant’s head. Meaningless words like Madrock, Wreck, Reflex, Stryker, Solidity, Apath, Cannonball, Dialation, Heatwave, Pester, Rogue, and Nevermore. Each of these words matched up with an image in his mind, but he had no idea what these words and images meant. He fought hard through the darkness to make sense of this, but all he could focus on was that same phrase, “I am a New Mutant.” Unconsciousness soon followed.

****
The mutant sat up suddenly, smacking his head against the inside of his coffin. He could move! There was a tremendous crash nearby, and the lid of his confinement popped open. He found himself facing a massive man who seemed made of flowing metal. The “man” spoke, and the mutant immediately recognized it as one the voices that he had heard earlier, “Mutant subject 001A has been released through your failure! You will be destroyed.”

The metallic man’s rage was directed towards a much smaller man standing nearby. He appeared to be completely human. He stammered, “Phalanx Leader, it was not my fault…the quakes damaged so much of the equipment.” The mutant recognized his voice as the other voice he had heard earlier.

The metallic man reached forward and crushed the smaller man’s skull with a simple twist of his hand, “Excuses are unacceptable.” The metallic man turned to the mutant slowly trying to get to his feet, and an odd metallic clicking sound came from him. It almost sounded like laughter, “Mutant subject 001A, return to your chamber!” With that, the metallic man gave the mutant a hard shove. The coffin reformed around him, and the mutant felt the static come back in his mind again. But this time, he was able to have one strong, coherent thought before things faded back to black. ”My name is Samuel Guthrie. My friends call me Cannonball. I am a New Mutant. "

Oh come on, did anyone really think that I had any plans on leaving Sam dead? I am a lifelong New Mutants fan

No, I don't think anyone thought you'd keep him down.

I, for one, was just confused about what was going on.

Sam gets kidnapped and replaced by a Phalanx facsimile before Mission 108, feels the facsimile die during 109, and wakes up due to malcfunctioning equipment during the two fuzzy weeks.

And, unless I am mistaken, does this mean that none of our dead characters are dead? Good to see Sam back.

Dead on

As for dead characters, I hadn't thought of that, but yes.

Jean Grey has nothing on us.

Hey, in 11 main issues, 34 Unlimited issues, and everything else that goes around the board, we've only had two dead characters come back. That is about right for an X-Men book

Snaps fingers! Phantazia was killed in a mission, and she's not coming back.

And a Kleinstock! We killed one of them too

How could you forget about Kleinstock?!

And of course, Sabretooth was seemingly killed in a Unlimited issue…but that guy never stays dead

We really need to have Harlan reappear, just so we can make it three brothers out of three shot dead

Technically, I meant Sabretooth's status to be ambiguous. Everything happened as I hoped it would: the GM made the decision for me.

Yay for Sam! Was wondering when he'd come back

::chuckle:: Pretty sure that won't be happening for a while. I have a lot of plans for the Phalanx, but just about no time to properly run a mission.
