New Mutants Unlimited #26
Post by Blight on Dec 21, 2006, 3:20pm

<Another back and forth PM story, this time between lasthero and myself. Enjoy!>

New Mutants Unlimited #26
Bonding

Cover Description: Wolverine stands in the center of a large group of villains, claws extended. In the crowd, we can see Magneto, Sabretooth, Cyber, Lady Deathstrike, Albert, Elsie Dee, Zzzax, Juggernaut and many others. Beneath it all is a paragraph in small print reading "None of the above are actually in this issue, but since it's mainly a character development piece, we'll sell more comics this way"

~~~
In the confines of his new room, Wreck sits quietly. He had returned from Dr. Strange's abode to find the worst. The mansion was destroyed, along with his former dorm room. And his signed photograph of Bruce Campbell/Wonder Man.
Across from him, Zephyr sits in a similar state of silence.
Wreck glances over at him. Then at a wall. Then back to him, hanging his head.
"……say something. For the team's resident chatterboxes, this is damn weird."
"Huh, what?"
Zephyr wasn't exactly sitting quietly; he had a standing policy against not saying anything witty for more than two minutes. "Oh, sorry, dozed off for a minute. Had a dream about…" Some things a gentleman doesn't tell. "…stuff. What's up?"
"I don't know," Wreck answers. "Ever since my damnation I've been trying to be more social, but I'm not very good at it."
He looks on blankly.
"It does take a sort of special touch. Which I don't have." First day on the team and I've made quite a few enemies…maybe too many. "Still, this seems like a pretty good team to try it out with. Interesting people."
Chuckling somewhat tiredly, Wreck nods.
"I know what you mean. On our second day here, I had a gun on Lex while he was trying to cook me. And don't even get me started on your girlfriend….."
"Girlfriend?" Zephyr knows who he's talking about, he just never thought to put that title on it. Seems so official. "Yeah, Marisol can be a bit…" Flashes of a crotch-shot leap to mind. "…scary, but she's a really nice person, she means well. Just have to take to the time." Looking back, I kind of get what she meant when she said she was isolated from the group; it's kind of like she's in a different world from them. Shame, that; I bet they'd like her if she'd just connect. "But all in all, random acts of jackassery aside, it's good here."
"Could have fooled me," Wreck mutters.
Then he raises his head, beaming brightly. The expression looks more than a little goofy.
"To put it mildly, Marisol hates my guts."
"Yeah, I noticed. But she did come to hell just to save you; whether she wanted to or not, that's more than a lot of people would do." Zephyr probably wouldn't have gone himself if she hadn't, but that's a little something he keeps quiet. "Maybe you two don't like each other, but you can trust her, teammate-wise. I'd think. Besides…no offense, man, but, from what I gathered…everyone kind of hates your guts. To different degrees."
"I'm aware of that," Wreck says quietly. "Difference being, I usually give people a reason to hate me. With her, it was different."
He shakes his head.
"It was like, I tried to be civil, and got yelled at for it. So I decided, fine, I'll just be an assmunch instead. Well, that gets me a nice, big 'I hate you and want you to die'. That gets her an 'I hate you more and want you to die too'. On and on and on we go."
And he shrugs.
"I suppose I'd just like to make peace, but that's difficult when you're on a hate you hate you loop the loop."
"Just…give her time." Zephyr lays back, easing into the covers. "I know I sound like a broken record here, but she's a really good person. I think she's sort of afraid to let people see how good she is, like they'll take advantage or something. She's in this shell, you know? Once you break through, she's the most awesome person to be around, I swear."
He shrugs, too, sitting up to face Wreck. "You seem like a cool enough guy, bet you've got a few numbers in the black book. Tell me, ever felt, you know…attached to a girl, before? Anyone special?"
Wreck pauses, thinking.
"…..not really, actually. I generally dislike everyone to such a degree that it never even crosses my mind."
And he snickers.
"I never even had time, really. I went from being beaten silly in an orphanage, to living a few years out on the street on the run from everyone, to having Punisher throw me off of a building, to being here."
"Well, that kind of…sucks." Zephyr makes a mental note NOT to complain about his own problems so much. Could always suck worse. "You should get out there, meet people. Xavier keeps on saying how we're supposed to be a family and somesuch."
"Yeah, that's sort of why I'm trying to be nicer in general. I can't say I had much of a family. At the risk of sounding corny, this is the closest I've had to one."
Wreck smiles, a little sadly.
"Oh well. I suppose I'll go to sleep…..just do me one favor?"
He pauses, trying to find the words. Then….
"……tell Marisol that I'm willing to call a ceasefire. And that I never actually hated her, like I'm sure she thinks."
Wreck then clutches his chest in a mock heart attack.
"Wow, that was painful."
"Eh, you've got to take the mushy stuff in small doses. You get used to it fast." Zephyr lays back, trying not to grin and doing a bad job at it. "I'll pass it along. Good night, man."
Wreck watches Zephyr close his eyes. Then when he's certain that he isn't being watched, he smiles.
"……I have to watch myself. If I keep being civil, I'll run out of things to complain about."
Quietly, he gets up. Still grinning, he makes his way over to a nearby closet, intending to look through his things before he goes to bed. For once, it seems like dredging up the past might not be such a bad thing.
As he springs the doors open though, all of the color abruptly drains from his face. His jaw drops, as he stands clenching the door handles, which would seem to be the only thing keeping him from falling over.
"Guh, guh, GUH buh guh!"
"What?" It had been a few minutes, tops, since Zephyr went to sleep - again - so getting knocked back out of it didn't take much. At first he thought Wreck was having some weird sort of dream, but a quick glance proved different.
"Crap, dude, you alright?" He hops out of bed and helps Wreck to his feet, walking him over to the bed. "What happened?"
"Guh, guh…."
Wreck suddenly tears himself away from Zephyr, running back to the closet. Glancing inside again, he tears his sunglasses off. Wipes the back of his hand across his teeth-eyes, blinks them and looks again.
And seeing that there is no change, he begins babbling again as Zephyr walks back over to him.
Zephyr glances inside of the closet, to find the source of Wreck's misery. A black skull grins at him from the darkness, sitting serenely atop a large staff.
"THE ABOMINATION!", Wreck suddenly bellows. "THE DARK ABOMINATION LIVES!"
And he falls to his knees sobbing hysterically, as the eyes of the skull begin to softly burn……
Interesting character development piece. What amuses me most about Wreck, historically, is his whole "saying the wrong thing at the wrong time" habit. I still recall how when the Legacy Virus plot started he was telling Gerald that it would make his head explode, theoretically. It amused me a lot at the time.
Anyway…the skull being in the 1982 reality…well…that's unexpected.
Man, lasthero is such a coop-fic whore… <_<
Anyway, I don't know why, but this seems a lot… smoother than mine and his work. I suppose it had a bit less personalized introspection. I can't quite recall Wreck trying to be civil though?
I should say "good work", though.
And, actually, there were 2-3 Gerald/Roxy PM-fests that never made it to this level. So, yes, lasty is a co-op fanfic whore. But that's a good thing.
Nothing wrong with whoredom when the result is this satisfying. Good work guys.
It is. Hmmmmm…
Hey, deathchicken, think we should do a Marisol-Wreck team-up fic? After all, nothing patches things up as good as kicking a villain's ass… or just talking about it thoroughly.
The whole reason I created my own character was to get some of that lasthero fan fic writin' lovin'
People keep coming to me for them! I can't say no!
Edit: Well, I could, but I don't want to.
Great work guys, almost makes me want to have Dillan and Zephyr team-up…but then again I enjoy their hatred for one another.
Nice twist ending. Knew that skull was going to come back and bite someone in the ass
