New Mutants Unlimited # 19
Post by Risk on Nov 21, 2006, 5:27pm

This takes place after New Mutants 108.

***

The X-man known as Beast rubbed his eyes, as fatigue began to take effect on him.

“At the very least, Sephula, we’re going to have to take a break. We’ve been going at this for hours,” Beast said, exuding a friendly warmth that threatened to envelop Sephula entirely.
“Just a little while longer – I’m almost there.”
“You’ve been working on this almost since you got back. This isn’t something we can cure overnight.”
“I know, but I really think I’m on to something here.”
Beast looked at Sephula for a time, concerned, and then, faltering for a moment, spoke. “I’m worried about you, Sephula. I heard about your little outburst today.”
Sephula swung around to face Beast. “Oh, you’ve been talking to Ms. Rogue… Really, Mr. Mcoy, I’m fine. It was all bluster and bluff. I wasn’t really going to do that stuff.”
Beast looked at Sephula – he almost looked through Sephula, as if attempting to ascertain the truth behind his words. Abruptly, he cut off from this, and turned away from him.

“Get some rest, Sephula. Go to sleep. Your work, and unless some form of miracle occurs, the Legacy Virus will both be here in the morning.”
“But the stuff in my head might not be…” Sephula muttered under his breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing.”

Left along to his thoughts, he was left to reflect on what had happened earlier on the day.
Why couldn’t I tell him what was wrong? Why couldn’t I tell him that I screwed up when I pulled that cancer trick on Deadpool? Why couldn’t I tell him that I accidentally pulled some of the cancer into me when I was forcing it on him, and it settled in my brain, affecting the cells there? Without a natural healing factor like Deadpool’s, I can’t keep it from killing me. Even my powers can’t deal with it – I tried, and failed… like always. He could probably have helped me.

“Like Weapon X helped Deadpool? That kind of help I don’t want,” Sephula said out loud.

That’s why I have to deal with this tonight, cure the Legacy Virus tonight, whilst I still can. I've already scanned myself. The cancer isn’t going to affect my capabilities, my intelligence… not yet – but with where it’s located, it will affect my memories. Quite adversely. I only have one chance to save my memories… but I still won’t be able to save myself.

“Wait… yes! Hell yeah! I’ve got it! I’ve got it! I’ve cured the Legacy Virus!” Sephula screamed, frantically scribbling on a piece of paper. However, he heard a rumble behind him. Something was wrong…

A tentacle smashed through the wall, as Wolverine and Omega Red tumbled through it, locked in combat. Sephula prepared for combat, when one of Omega Red’s tentacles smashed into a running experiment, setting fire to the desk he was working at. Sephula wasn’t fast enough. He saw his work burn to ashes.

“No! No, no, no, no no no no no! I did it! I solved it! I could have saved them! I could have saved them all, I could have ended it, I could have -” rambling, Sephula looked up. Another one of Omega Red’s tentacles swung round and collided with Sephula’s face, robbing him of consciousness.

I’d saved them… His thoughts faded along with his consciousness.

That was just sad. I got a weird vibe off of your story, sorta like a mix between Flowers for Algernon and something else whose name I really can't recall at the moment.

I can sorta relate to what happened to Seph. I remember a time when I was typing up a school project and my computer crashed and I losted the whole thing. I was able to redo it, but I know it wasn't anywhere near as good as what I had originally written. Sad thing is, here, Sephula probably won't have any reccolection of what he had done at all.

«one major problem with this story. You didn't really face Deadpool, you faced a Phalanx-simulation of Deadpool. There was no cancer there to catch»

«Dammit! Damn you with your pointing out of problems ! Wait; I have a loop-hole. Was the thing in anyway biological? Because I kind of played on what Sephula knows of Deadpool, and actually induced the cancer in him. If it was remotely biological, then that still works.»

«Yeah. He won't remember what he'd figured out, but he'll know that he cured it, which is the worst part. He began figuring it out on the Blackbird on the way to the mission.»

«Well, Phalanx are techo-organic, so kind of. But there is a better solution. How about Apath created this cancer in himself but doesn't realize it? It would be well within the range of his powers, and it is irrelevant if he did it to Deadpool since DP blew up shortly afterwards»

«That does work better. Thanks. It's kinda like my makeshift solution… If he induced it in Phalanx DP and drew it into himself it's kinda like he made it in himself… But I may be reaching slightly here .

Bottom line - Sephula now has a brain tumour.»

«Sorry, I wasn't trying to knock the story, which I thought was very good. BUT, I am anal Glad I could help, and really nice work.

Hmm…this means I have to do another Cerebro file. Darn »
