New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Nov 16, 2006, 11:58pm

Cover description: Stryker, eyes closed, head inclined skyward, kneeling on a barren and scarred piece of land. His left hand disappears into the earth. A broken statue of him lays behind him.

Title: Oubliette

Continuity note: This takes place during the New Mutants' titanic throwdown with the Brotherhood! Check it out in New Mutants 107, true believers!

Roxanne. I'm not quite sure what to think about her anymore. The duplicate seemed convinced that she was the genuine article, but that can't be true. Yet she so easily expelled the true Roxanne from her mind, and defeated me on the Astral Plane…

That's another thing. Some weirdo split personality shouldn't even put up half a struggle on the Astral Plane, but the impostor was not only able to struggle, she seemed completely in control. I need to learn more about this. I need to think. So after Lex leaves, I go back to where it all began. It's where we fought the Demon Bear the first night, but it has greater symbolism for me than that. This is where Roxanne first told me about the demon that plagued her, and I told her, essentially, not to worry about it. If I could take that back…

She made statues of all of us here. I remember her trying to explain why to me, and why they fell apart. I see myself, and I realize that it's not really me but an idealized version of me, seen from the eyes of someone full of hope and naivete. I didn't think I'd like her at first, but she became my only true friend on the team. And I let her down. Not once, but many times.

I know the dark personality took control for a while. Everyone talked about it. But I was too busy feeling sorry for myself about the Legacy Virus. I could have taken care of matters then and Roxanne would still be here, still be herself. But instead of talking about what was going on with her, even for a second, I dragged her out here to join in on my self-pity session. She did, and she never even mentioned what happened to them upstate. But I knew, and I should have done something other than sit around acting goth.

So now I have what's left of Roxanne. It isn't much, it's really weak. I'm still new to the larger world of psychic happenings, but what I do know is that Roxanne is weak enough that I can't pass her to the Professor or Jean, she has to stay here long enough to heal a little. But that's a Catch-22…the more I use my powers, the more it kills my body. The more I try to protect her, the less time I'll have to bring her back. I think that my little trick at the Hideaway will make this not count as a Field Mission, so I've got one left. It has to be the one to rescue Roxy.

So now all that's left is to build the best possible environment for her. I look around. What would Roxanne want? She wanted to be a part of something big, I know that. And she loved superheroes.

I reach down and touch the earth. The earth is the source of her powers, and it helps me focus more on her. Then I operate inside my head for a while. She has to be buried deeply. Whatever I fought might come for her, I want them to have to go through me first. I form a sphere that will alert me of any danger with a wide radius around her spot. Within the sphere, at the very center, there's a copy of this glade, but not an exact copy. This is much more idyllic, very placid with just the right hint of light coming through the pines. Around the center, all the New Mutants that we've shared adventures with, plus Golem. Statues, just like she wanted to make. I look around. It looks pretty good to me, just one final touch.

I feel like a dork doing this, but I know that one thing Roxanne shares with evil Roxanne is a complete fixation with superheroes. I give Golem an Avengers belt communicator doohickey thing, or whatever they call them. That will get her in touch with me when she's in better shape to communicate.

I form her…soul? Is this a soul? Anyway, whatever it is, I form it into the shape of Roxanne, sound asleep. The Golem statue opens its arms slightly, and I cradle her in. "I'm sorry I couldn't help you Roxanne," I say to the comatose form. "I will make this up to you, or die trying."

I exit before I lose my cool. Back in the real world, I collapse crying on the spot. I've failed her again, but this time it's for the last time.

Great work Hav, and the end was just really sad. It's always terrible to see someone trying to help and then fail.

Great story. Really easy to empathise with Stryker.

Wow, that was awesome, Havy!! I really should do a fan fic story eventually, but I have more fun getting people to act out my ideas

If you notice, junior, I only give people EXP for their first story. You got EXP for New Mutants Unlimited 1, ya mooch.

I noticed and agreed, I just like to start crap.

;_;

Wow, that was…that was REALLY nice. At the risk of sounding like a wimp, I almost got a little misty eyed near the end. Good stuff, and I don't just say that because it heavily involves the bond between your character and mine, which I'm really glad exists. <_<;

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by K'lar on Nov 17, 2006, 11:38am

LOL! Fair enough, that I can deal with.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Nov 17, 2006, 11:57am

I'd also like to say that the bond between Stryker and Madrock is one of my favorite plot devices right now, and I'm glad that you approve of the handling of it, lasty. I really hate writing other people's characters into fiction, which is why it took me a long time to get around to this (also why it's so short…I figured that the less stuff there, the harder it would be to screw up).

And you know what's really ironic about it? Don't take this the wrong way, but when I first read the write-up for Roxanne I thought I would completely hate the character. Obviously, I didn't.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Roxanne "Madrock" Madison on Nov 17, 2006, 12:05pm

Short works well, here. It's not long, no, but it's a lot of extreme emotion in a short space; stretching it out to a longer scene would've just deluded that.

And dont' feel bad about hating Roxy at first sight…truth be told, I hated a lot of other characters at first sight, and still kind of, do…none of them are with us anymore, though…<_<…

I am going to tip my hand, and don't take this personally, lasthero, because I have changed my mind entirely.

I had my doubts about Roxie, as well. Not so much about the character, but more in my doubts about you being on the team. There had been times on GameFAQs that you annoyed me. And no, I can't name anything specific, but I know you were on a long list of posters that tended to get on my nerves.

I am glad that I decided to give you a chance to change my mind, as from the beginning of this absurd experiment, you have been involved and keeping this game fun and active. You are an excellent writer and have a great imagination, and I enjoy throwing ideas back and forth with you.

I'm going to tip my hand as well. I have never liked blackmore or Hav…and every day ask myself how do I put up with the two of them here, via email and gamefaqs.

There, now that I've got that off my chest I feel much better.

Don't think there's anyone here who gets on my nerves…
People on CAGN, now, that's a different story. We are legion.

I stole the keys to the Orbitting Retcon Ray and retconned the gift into a bag of cheezits.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16

I can name a specific instance of lasthero getting on my nerves on GF, two in fact. Both of them were related to information gathering in order to write a bashing review of a game (well, one was bashing the game, one was bashing the source material). It may seem as if I tend to bash a lot of things, but for some reason bashing reviews tend to get on my nerves a lot.

Of course, in both of these events, once I read the actual review, he handled the matter with more maturity than I expected given the genre, and I kind of quickly got over the situation.

Aw, thanks. ^_^ At the risk of sounding cliche and tiresome…because I know I've said this about a dozen or so times in greater words…the pleasure's all mine.

Yeah I was joking to make your point. I've seen your name a few times…but it didn't stick out until you started coming here.

I've noticed that now Lasthero's posts tend to stick out. I also noticed that I tend to agree with most of his opinions on things. Well except his opinion on it being ok for men to wear hot pink…..I'm totally against that.

Enough of this niceness:

heaty - Your taste in music sucks.

lasthero - You still annoy me.

born - Do you ever shut up?

sephula - pick a power!!! And who are you again??

Hav - you almost single handedly destroyed this RPG with your ridiculous sentinel storyline. And you smell funny.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16

^That's much more like it. I feel at home again.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by K'lar on Nov 17, 2006, 12:46pm

Yeah, lasthero and born's definitely posts tend to jump out at me more than they used to Protoman For All's (Lex/Heatwave) too, but for some reason the first few times I could never remember which NM he was. I remember when he posted about having the lamest trap in the second mission (which he definitely did), and since then I have known who he was immediately.

Especially this one:

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Risk on Nov 17, 2006, 1:31pm

I gotta say, I do have a propensity for doing stuff like trying to stack powers on people I create in stories and stuff, just by loosely linking it to their previous power .

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by K'lar on Nov 17, 2006, 1:33pm

You and most of the writers at Marvel and DC. Hey, Sauron breathes flame now! Blob can reshape his body and has gravity powers! Magneto is a telepath, whoops, no he's not!

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Risk on Nov 17, 2006, 1:46pm

Yeah. After I posted that, I began rationalising Apath by comparing him in my mind to Magneto on a far smaller scale .
But, you've gotta admit, everything I've used so far pretty much falls under biokinesis.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Blight on Nov 17, 2006, 1:48pm

I realized somewhere along the line that I had both a passive mutant power and was in the New Mutants. Then it hit me, "Hey wait a second, I'm Doug Ramsey!" and had to break out the second one before someone decided to write me out

I've mentioned this to you in PM, but I am not that worried about everything fitting and making sense. The goal here is to have fun, not worry too much about all the trappings

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by K'lar on Nov 17, 2006, 1:54pm

Hey, at least Wreck can be used as a weapon. Heatwave/Apath/Golem uses his strength to hurl Wreck at someone. Wreck can get back up. Cypher couldn't even do that much

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Marisol Morales on Nov 17, 2006, 1:58pm

I am hurt and insulted…
Aaaanyway, I want in on this confessional.

I really hate heatckerr's guts. Especially how he shows up for five minutes every mission… Grrrrr! On the plus side, he's still ten times better than Incubus was.

Yeah, um… Nothing else comes to mind. Sorry!

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by K'lar on Nov 17, 2006, 2:06pm

I actually heard from Incubus today, who has been having computer problems. He's hoping to be back and active in the next month.

Vigour used to drive me crazy. Shows up just long enough to complain that he missed a mission…and then gone until the next time he showed up to complain. Incubus at least particpated in a few missions.

And the worst was the guy who signed up, and had his little brother sign up just to start a flame war. Had to change the whole sign up process because of those two fools.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Nov 17, 2006, 2:50pm

Yeah I'm sorry but my boss has this thing about me actually doing work. I have no clue what his problem is…

By the time I get home…you guys have a knack for being incognito…or if you're black…incognegro…

Oh and blackmore…you should burn that picture. I hear that if you stare at it too long that fat black guy will come out your pc screen and start haunting you. Not like in a want to stab and kill you kind of way…more like a rapping and dancing to obscure hits from the 80s.

..Let's get physical, physical,physical
Let's get into physical
let me hear ya body talk
ya body talk
let me hear ya body talk….

Hey, only worry if I tell you that you need to participate more. Or if you get put on the inactive list You've been fine. I said from the beginning I didn't expect everyone to participate every day, just like the shouldn't expect me to be here every day. We all have lives. Well, some of us do…uhm…well, maybe it's just the two of us

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16

And whenever I hear that song, I get a haunting image of Bill Murray dancing on the debut of LATE NIGHT with David Letterman.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16
Post by Curt "Reflex" Camden on Nov 17, 2006, 3:00pm

I actually thought nobody would remember that song…

And did Bill really do that on Letterman? Man I'd cut off my left arm for a youtube of that. Well…maybe not my entire arm…but definitely a pinky. Pinky's are overrated.

Re: New Mutants Unlimited #16

Hmmm….be a hard video to find. No one has even showed Late Night in a long time…
