New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #4
Post by Prime on Apr 3, 2007, 11:03am

Note: This is a short and very spontaneous one. And major proof that any occurrence of me NOT writing is simple laziness and a weak will. I thought up the concept this morning, and finished it in a few hours…
I'm actually a little worried if I might have had to ask permission from players for this, but not only was I impatient to post this, I also think it wouldn't have been necessary…

Unfortunately, as a whole, this story really exemplifies m inability to cause emotions in readers. It's supposed to make you feel something, but… doesn't.

New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #4
Fear of Abandonment

Cover description: Nicolette looking towards the viewer with a blank, slightly fearful expression. Behind her, the vast reaches of space can be seen. It's an impressive sight, but looks a little lonely…

Setting: A few days before the Trial of Osmosis Lass.

This night, Nicolette dreamed of Wildfire.

It was a rather confusing dream in general, but the subject matter was rather expected, considering what she had been doing before falling asleep. The tone of the dream was quite racy - almost raunchy - in some ways. She and Bella were doing things they would have waited with for quite a while in reality. But it wasn't just that… Images of Bella cradling and kissing her were interspaced with both of them simply talking, about anything and everything. Both of them sharing their secrets, hopes and fears seemed much more intimate than the physical aspect, but she enjoyed both parts greatly all the same.

She dreamed of everything about Wildfire. Her crimson skin that seemed simply flawless. Her wholly black eyes that looked incredibly livid. Her lean, muscled figure. Her skilled hands, which had done so many horrible things, but could be so gentle… Wildfire, the soldier and thinker of amazing ability, and Bella, the one person who would always stand by Nicolette's side, even though she might not have been with her. The one person who would support her at all times, no matter what happened, and no matter what she was like…

Wildfire was perfect, Nicolette hazily decided. The dream was perfect too - such a welcome change from her usual ones…

She was disappointed that it had to end. But she didn't dwell on it…

For a while, Nicolette simply remained lying under her blankets, staring into nothingness. She considered trying to fall asleep again, but decided it wouldn't work out. She was already wide awake. She occasionally liked sleeping in, but had gotten used to less than five hours of daily sleep long ago, and a few months of lazing around the X-Mansion hadn't changed that. She rose into a sitting position with a mild yawn and brushed a strand of hair out of her face with a hand.

After a slight pause, she stood up. Her feet didn't touch the ground, of course. She took a moment to stretch herself, then hovered over to a mirror. As per her usual morning routine, she inspected every inch of herself in the mirror carefully. Running a hand over her bare stomach, she thought for a hundredth time that she had been lucky not to scar. After a while, the inspection faded off into simply staring at her reflection. Soon, she shook her head a little and turned away.

After making her bed, she proceeded to "wash" herself. She still hadn't gotten used to the curious scribbling sensation of the de-ionizer. It wasn't unpleasant, but definitely very different, and… more stimulating than water. She didn't have to dry herself off either. The next step was getting dressed. Unlike back on Earth, where she had to mull on what exactly to wear each day, she could do it right away. She wore her uniform most of the time, and nothing underneath it… After brushing her hair, and briefly looking herself over in the mirror again, she decided she was fit to enter the day.

The halls of the Juber were curiously empty, so Nicolette figured it was still early in the morning shift. Normally, she would have greeted every crew member she'd come upon. She traveled at a normal pace, not using her powers. Even so, she reached the Lounge quite quickly. To her surprise, she discovered that all her teammates were there already. They had flocked to a single table and were having breakfast. Nicolette stopped, took a deep breath and conjured up a brilliant smile, then hovered closer vigorously.

"Good relative morning, guys," she lightly said, and raised her hand in greeting.

Nobody greeted her back. In fact, nobody even acknowledged her. They continued conversing and eating. Nicolette's expression didn't change, she just cleared her throat audibly.

"I said good morning," she said even more pleasantly. Once again, she received no reply. Nobody even raised their gaze to look at her.

"Your manners have definitely been better," she joked and moved a little closer. Nobody reacted.

For a moment, Nicolette stood still. She raised her eyebrows slightly, but made sure not to let the smallest frown slip into her features.

"This isn't very nice at all," she pouted loudly, and crossed her arms playfully. She looked them over closely. "What, is this some sort of joke?"

Roxanne was half-way through some kind of huge pudding, but seemed to have given up and was now playing with her food. Curt had already finished, and was now watching the others. Rapt and Mike were talking about something casually, taking bites off their plates occasionally. Nadia was slowly making head-way with some kind of sliced fruits on her plate, but kept glancing towards the main windows, at some kind of giant gas cloud outside. Adam and Kalvin were done as well, and the former now seemed to be demonstrating his powers to the latter in detail. None of them even looked at her…

"It's not especially funny, you know."

At that moment, Michael seemed to have said something very humorous, since the table burst into a round of chuckles and giggles. Nicolette looked a lot more discontent suddenly. She didn't like being ignored…

"Seriously, people… What are you doing? Stop it."

After a split second of hesitation, she hovered closer and grasped Kalvin's shoulder firmly. Only… She couldn't get a hold of him. Her hand passed straight through, somewhere into his chest. Nicolette let her mouth sink open slightly, and stared at Kalvin in shock. She then retracted her hand as quickly as possible. She could touch it just fine… Looking around the table, she could see that nobody had seemed to notice this occurrence - least of all Kalvin, who just looked a little weirded out by Adam showing him his nose up close. Nicolette leaned back worriedly, and tried to touch Freaktada as well. Her hand passed straight through his head. Within a few seconds, she repeated the move with all of her other teammates. The same thing happened with all of them: she couldn't connect. It was like she was a ghost; as if she wasn't there at all…

By this point, her smile and generally positive facade had vanished. Although she tried to suppress it, and to maintain a cool head, she was starting to feel an undeniable feeling of dread in her chest…

"Come on people," she said shrilly, while glancing about the assembled, "I'm not invisible. You should be able to see me…"

But they weren't. They couldn't see or hear her, and she couldn't touch them. She couldn't communicate with them on any level. Not only that… They all seemed fairly content, and weren't wondering about her absence at all. None of them looked towards the door to look for her even once.

Nicolette found that she couldn't touch objects either. She seemed to be completely etheral. As shameful as it was, she was feeling increasingly more panicked with every moment now. The worst part of it was, she didn't know what to do… She flew over to one of the other tables in the Lounge, where two Shi'ar crewmen were eating peacefully.

"I need your assistance," she said to one of them as calmly as she could, "Something is wrong with my team, you have to-" She didn't finish her sentence, since she noticed he wasn't paying attention either. And she phased right through him as well… Just like his companion. And the people on the next table… and the next one. Nicolette gave up after a few more tries, and returned to her teammates' table.

"Snap out of it," she said, "I don't know what's going on, but…"

She faded off, and shook her head violently. She was starting to feel desperate…

"Stop it!" she hissed, "You can't just forget me like this. You can't throw me aside! I'm your teammate, and your leader. You need me! What would you do without me? You have to help me…" She fell silent, and looked over the others bitterly. "I'm here! Pay attention to me! Notice me! I deserve it!"

In a moment, Nicolette had become irrelevant. She couldn't bear looking on them any longer…

What had happened? Why was she like this? She had been able to touch and affect things just a moment ago, and now she suddenly couldn't. It didn't make sense. She hadn't done anything special this morning. And if she was really phased somehow, there was no reason why she wouldn't pass through the walls of the ship…

The instant she realized this, she was pulled away from the Lounge. During a brief moment, she could see various rooms and personell of the Juber flashing by, before she was flung outside into the space through the back of the ship… The ship was moving away from her, and the only thing she could do was staring after it with a frightened expression. Curiously enough, her first thought wasn't about the possibility of simply dying in the vacuum of space, it was about the fact that they were all abandoning her.

She wanted to call out something after them, to make them notice her - make them stop and come back for her, but she couldn't get a word out. She vaguely noticed that she couldn't breathe, and that every single bit of her body hurt. A moment later, this became irrelevant, when she realized that she was surrounded by the vast darkness of space now…

Erebus was right there, floating beside her with a mocking expression. She couldn't even scream…

That's when she woke up with a gasp. For a terrifying instant, it seemed like nothing had changed: she was still surrounded by darkness. She couldn't see a thing, and felt helpless… She was, however, smart enough to scramble to press the light switch next to her bed. The room being flooded with light brought about a wave of relief, and of realization. It had just been a nightmare… She wasn't on the Juber, but back on Chandilar, waiting for Nadia's trial. This didn't do much to make her feel better. She was covered with cold sweat, and her heart was beating wildly. She sunk back on the bed, still shaking a little.

With a barely audible whimper, she turned around and wrapped herself up in her blanket, then hid her face in the pillow.

"Bella…"

«I will read this in five minutes, but I did want to respond to your comment. Anyone should feel free to use Chi in their space stories. I am not that picky about my characters. Just don't kill him for me »

Really strong! Some nice insight into Prime's head, and I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Wow, this is quite good. Very…eh, what's the word for it…I guess 'strong' will have to do, yeah. It's very strong, emotional stuff. Don't let it ever be said that you don't put 100% into your writing, that's for sure.

Exactly! I know it's not the prettiest word, but "stong" was the first word that came to mind when I finished it.

Thanks you! Not sure if I'd agree with that though. Like I said, it was a work of a few hours, which isn't all that much effort…

Doesn't matter how much time something takes, only how the time is spent. I've written some good stuff in under an hour, I've written some crappy stuff over a period of months, and I'm sure many others have similar experiences. Length isn't a big deal.

I didn't know Lasthero was female. Cause no males I know would have said that <_<

Well, I've heard a lot of people say rewrites are very important.

You probably don't know many males who are comfortable with themselves or other people then .

-_- *grumble* I won't get into it here.

And I don't believe in rewrites, but that's mostly because I'm too lazy. The only time I've ever rewritten something was when someone made me.

I could not agree more. I will go back and edit, but mostly just word choices or dialouge. Once I reach "The end" I almost never rewrite.

I hardly ever rewrite too.

I look forward to reading this when I get time, which might not be until next week.

Fine fine, I read it now.

It did provoke emotional response in me, and not the way I initially expected it to. It was great.

Very good! Thanks.

If I may ask, what did you expect and what did you get? <_<

I expected it to be all sexy from the first paragraph, and it ended up making me feel Nico's isolation, panic, and fear.

And, thanks, TEO. It's a relief to know.
