New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #3

Cover: Six Shi’ar guards standing over a fallen Chi pointing laser rifles at him. Chi stands alone!

Title: Living on the Edge

by: Michael “Skitch” Maillaro

Note: This story takes place after the events of New Mutants…in Space!!! Issue 3.

And special thanks to born and maj for helping me out with their parts.

Mike stood up, "Notice something odd?" Mike waves his hand in the air. His force field still hasn't gone down since he punched through the comm screen, "It's still up, and I'm still alive!"

Rapt had stopped by to check on Mike after he had been dumped by Amelia, and he couldn’t help but notice that Mike seemed to be acting odd, “Yeah…I didn't want to comment on it…but, at least that’s gone right. If you wait here, I can go get a guard, and he can shoot you, we can see how strong it is.”

Mike considered this carefully. It was definitely a bad idea. But, Mike smiled brightly and said, "Let's do it!"

Rapt shook his head, “Yeah, we're not doing that. Choose another topic."

Mike pouted slightly, “"You guys ruin all my fun!" Mike snapped his fingers and his forcefield dropped. "So, what else can happen this week?"

Rapt said with hesitation, “"Don't tempt fate."

Mike laughed loudly. An evil smile crept over his face, “Oh? What if I did…."

Rapt looked at Mike with amusement, “"I'd have to break your legs to make sure you don't go anywhere. Do I need to do that?"

Mike didn’t even seem to notice Rapt talking, “The game is tag. I’ll bet you fifteen bucks that I can tag each of the eight guards around this place before they can bring me down.”

Rapt started to argue, but Mike had already burst out of the room at a full run. Rapt shook his head, “He really is an idiot…”

There were four exits to this amazing suite of room, and each had two guards standing at them. Mike had already set the rules for this game in his head. He can’t tag the guards standing next to each other in a row, and he had to drop his force field right before he made any tags.

Mike eyed the two guards standing at the “front” door. Skinny and Shorty, as Mike called them. “Shorty, first,” Mike said out loud. He strolled towards them. So far, the guards had not said a word to any of the New Mutants. No real surprise there. They didn’t seem all that friendly. That made this a really bad idea. This wasn’t a Danger Room training session…this was actual Shi’ar guards with actual laser rifles.

“S’up Gentlemen!” Mike said with a car salesman grin on his face. He held his hand out as if to shake.

The guards looked back at him with disgust. “Go back to your room, Terran.”

Mike smiled, “Tag! You’re it.” Shorty looked confused, until Mike stepped forward and shoved him with two hands. Shorty fell backwards, landing on his butt with a thud.

Skinny moved quick, bringing his gun to bear, but Mike snapped his fingers, and was pleased to see his force field jump up immediately, “Just like in the manual!” Mike said with a grin. Mike really didn’t want to test to see if it could take a laser rifle at short range. Mike ducked to the side, the blast passing inches by his head. Mike began to run across the room towards the next set of guards, Hairy and Smelly. Apparently, they had heard the commotion and were already heading his way.

Mike pointed to the front door, “Rapt is trying to escape! He went that way.” The guards changed direction, and Mike dropped his field just long enough to smack Hairy in the back, “Gotcha! And trim that beard! You look ridiculous!” Mike dropped to the ground, and swept Hairy and Smelly’s legs out from under them. He was back on his feet and in motion almost immediately.

He brought up his force field again just in time to absorb an energy blast in the back from one of the first two guards. It felt like someone slammed a hammer against his field, but it held up well enough. Their weapons must still be set to stun. Mike turned a corner, to find the other four guards waiting for him, rifles at ready. Moe, Larry, Curly, and Shemp. Mike lunged into the closest room. Which happened to be Roxie’s. Mike was able to figure that out immediately…since she was sleeping on the bed. In a smooth movement, Mike dived under the bed.

The four guards poured into the room. Mike could hear Rox sitting up muttering in confusion over his head. Mike thinks, I really wish Rox would create a Golem…. The guards scream is surprise. Mike drops his force field and slides out the other side of the bed in time to see a Golem forming itself from the palace walls

Mike yelled out, “Wow! Good timing, Rox! Thanks!” Rox seemed really surprised to see Mike. Mike moved quickly tapping the guards “That’s Moe, Shemp, Larry, and, last but definitely not least…Curly!” After tapping Curly, Mike darts out of the room, almost running head on into Smelly. Mike decides to use that momentum to his advantage and bowls Smelly over, “Sorry about that…I’ll buy you lunch later, and we can talk about it!”

Only one to go. Skinny himself. Mike turned sharply on his heel and darted back into the main room, all the guards giving chase now. He waved to Nic as he passed her standing in the hallway, which was really a stupid thing to do. His foot landed awkwardly on the carpet, and he felt a sharp twisting in his ankle. He went down hard. He looked up blurrily to notice the eight guards were gathered around him.

Skinny stood over him, his rifle pointed at Mike’s head. Skinny gave him a smile, “Electron said you would try something stupid. Goodbye, Terran.” Skinny attempted to pull the trigger, but he found the rifle was gone and in Nicolette’s hands. In fact, she had already disarmed all of the guards, moving so fast, none of them had really noticed yet. Mike got to his feet and touched Skinny on the chest with a wide grin, “And that is eight. Thanks, guys! This has been a lot of fun!”

Mike kissed Nic on the cheek and started walked back towards his room, leaving the guards to watch with bewilderment. Mike smirked at Rapt, “You owe me fifteen bucks!”

Rapt shook his head, “You cheated!”

Mike frowned, “Not true! I just got some help. Don’t worry, I’ll give Nic and Rox their fair share.”

Mike turned to find Nicolette already entering the room, “What was that about?”

Mike shrugged and said, “Ask Rapt. It was his idea. But, congratulations, Nic! You won five bucks! Pay the good lady, Silent Bob!” Mike turned on his Ipod, and laid down on his bed, ignoring the questioning looks from his teammates. The familiar chords of Stephen Tyler and company came on…

There's somethin' wrong with the world today
I don't know what it is
Something's wrong with our eyes

We're seeing things in a different way
And God knows it ain't His
It sure ain't no surprise

We're livin' on the edge
We're livin' on the edge
We're livin' on the edge
We're livin' on the edge

Pretty entertaining. I noticed you switch tense once or twice, but I'm pedantic. A fun read .

Can the Ipod shoot lasers yet?

Just got the plans right after this fan fic. Need someone to help with the building

I like. If only the team could be so organized in missions, the Elite would be of no consequence.

In fact now that I think about it, Chi could be a pretty good strategist. He could figure out the angle of attack, and Prime leads the charge into battle.

Chi would be a very good strategist, BUT, no one would ever listen to him

It's better to frankly say that Nicolette sucks as a leader, and it's my fault.

Since I am taking a day off from being a GM, I can't respond to make you feel better

BUT, if I was going to respond, I would point out:

There is actually a huge difference between a strategist and leader, but most people seem to not understand that. Mike is a great strategist, but no one would follow him. Prime is someone that people would follow pretty well and also a good strategist of her own.

As an example, Batman or MM are the team strategists. The leader is… actually, who IS the leader? Superman? It seems to change all of the time, and I'm sure I've seen both Batman and MM lead… So maybe that wasn't such a good example.

And now I'm trying to find others, but the only ones I can think of are the Outsiders (Nightwing for both counts), the temporary Justice League that formed in Obsidian Age (again Nightwing on both counts), Titans (would be Robin on both counts but we haven't seen much leadership or strategy)…

Wow. This post wouldn't have helped much.

You should read Young Justice.

Superman is the leader of JLA (big seven JLA at least). Without question. He's the charismatic one that people gather around. Batman is the tactician.

Young Justice, Wonder Girl was the leader, Robin was the tactician.

I have the entire series, but I'm talking about current teams.

Well, I guess JLA doesn't count as a current team, but that was JLA in it's most prominent recent incarnation.

Bm: Really? Even when I was reading it, I always thought that Robin was the leader. Even with Wonder Girl's treatment in Sins of Youth, it still seemed like Robin was the leader.

T-Bolts (pre Civil War), Songbird is the real leader that people listen to, but Zemo is the tactician.

Oh yeah. Completely forgot about Thunderbolts.

Wonder Girl was pretty much always the leader. The fans even voted her that way later on. We (I was big on the DC boards at the time) had always thought of her as the real leader of the team anyway. She got something absurd like 80% of the vote.

And now she gets no respect… no respect at all! Although I'm glad she spoke up and stood up for herself a little in the last one, as opposed to sitting there and taking it like in 110.

Hm… bah! No girls! At least, that's how it started off .

TEO: Yeah, I hate that. I haven't actually read the latest one, though. I think you know already how I feel on the matter of Songbird's current treatment, though.

I was all for Robin there, even though I knew who'd win in the actual vote in the comic. (I didn't even know the fans had a say.) Tim was easily my favorite Young Justice-er.

Wow. This post wouldn't have helped much.

Superman: Leader, and the general face of the JLA
Batman: Strategist, the brains of the operation
MM: Counselor. Helps everyone out when they're down.

Replacement JLA:

Nightwing: Leader/Tactician
Jason Blood: Strategist

Meh. Fans shmans, Robin was the leader of that outfit.

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #3

I was sure that MM had also served as the strategist from time to time…

I suppose I confused strategist and tactician in the case of the temporary team. Though I'm having difficulty making the distinction. Must away to a dictionary .

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #3
Post by Pester on Mar 28, 2007, 4:26pm

I'll be honest here, I only differentiated because I knew there was a difference between Nightwing's strategies and Jason Blood's. I don't recall what the difference is. But yeah, there have been times when MM was the strategist, but I would say it's not quite as common as his role as the team supporter. Tower of Babel comes to mind, or the end of the Obsidian Age when he helped everybody get over the events, or Golden Perfect where (I think) Wondy mentions how J'onn helped her get over some issues.

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #3

Which is why Pain of the Gods struck me as odd.

Re: New Mutants…IN SPACE!!! Unlimited #3
Post by Pester on Mar 28, 2007, 4:32pm

You mean the part where J'onn basically tells Wondy to piss off? First of all, that was a bad trade with awful characterization. But the case could be made that J'onn referred Wondy to Superman because he knew Superman would be better able to comfort Diana than J'onn could. So even though he looked like an uncaring douche, he was really just trying to help her. But considering that was a pretty bad story all in all, I try not to take anything that happens in it seriously.

Yeah, I know the reasoning given, but I still thought it was very, very odd.

Well I personally purged that and everything involved with it from my own canon. It's a terrible Elseworlds.
