Once they are on the road, and as Rogue drives, Cyclops stands and turns to address all the New Mutants.

"We are on our way to investigate a murder. Last night, someone killed a mutant. When the police found out, they didn't want anything to do with it, so they contacted X-Factor. X-Factor contacted the Mansion, and we're sending you."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 11:14am

I clasp my batons, arranging my holsters, and sliding them into a set that lies on the floor of the van right in front of me, next to a more regular looking holster. Picking them up, I attach them to the outside of my jacket, at about hip height.

"Do we know anything else?"

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Casey "Phase" Semple on May 25, 2007, 11:14am

"No offense sir…but shouldn't we leave this to actual detectives?"

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 11:21am

"If it were that easy, we could. However, the police are insisting X-Factor act as consultants, and they don't want anything to do with a mutant death, along with something else. There is something they aren't telling. X-Factor isn't able to do it right now, so they wanted us to. Rogue insists you are all bright and capable students, and wanted you to get practical experience in these matters, if you will become X-Men, this won't be the only mutant death you'll have to look into.

And there is something else. Last night, she apparently made a call, wanting to get protection from something. She was going to call again tonight to say why."

"Ela Baker. 39 years old, mother of one daughter, age 10, married for 18 years. They moved to the house she died in three months ago.

Cyclops nods, opening a small box and taking one out.

"You turn it on here. And off there. They are all pre-set, all you need to do is remember that with them on, you'll appear a bit taller, and olders. And act professional, Rogue tells me you are all capable of it, so its time to prove it. They only have a four hour charge, though, so keep that in mind as your upper time limit of them being on."

Cyclops hands out the inducers as the van pulls up and stops along the sidewalk, and ushers the New Mutants out. The neighborhood is the stereotypical suburb neighborhood, all the lawns showing they were just recently cut, a hedge, or a white picket fence seperating the yards. The only indiciation of which house the New Mutants should be going to, is the police tape closing off the open door to one of the houses. Rogue leads the way into the towards the house.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 25, 2007, 12:14pm

I float towards the house, fiddling around with my inducer as I go. Just to be safe, I try and sense the air around us, make sure there's nobody hiding or somesuch.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Marianne "Lucifer" Thorley on May 25, 2007, 12:14pm

Damien

"Where in the house did the murder actually take place?" I ask quietly.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 12:21pm

Rogue replies to Damien. "The Kitchen."

Zephyr's probing doesn't reveal anyone, or anything out of the ordinary.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Pester on May 25, 2007, 12:21pm

Pester turns on his image inducer and walks toward the house, standing up straight and tall to look like an adult. His sword is kept very close, so it looks just like his clothing. He takes a look around, and walks toward the kitchen.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 12:23pm

When the New Mutants enter the house, its quiet, except the 'tick, tick, tick of a grandfather clock. The house is well kept. EXTREMELY well kept. The New Mutants would have to struggle to find any dust in the place. Infact, as they continue through the house, the only place there is any mess, is the kitchen, and thats understandable, as an outline of a headless body is at the center of the mess, with several photo's of the body left behind for examining after the body was removed. The sink is half full of soapy water, and dishes, the window open to allow a breeze in, with the shade drawn half down. The fridge, there are various papers, most of them tests with A's, A+'s, or the one B, in addition to a few drawings done by a child.

Rogue continues to respond to Damien. "Decapitation is the reported cause of death."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Pester on May 25, 2007, 12:28pm

Pester hangs back for a moment. He has never seen a corpse before, and a murder scene like this is pretty nasty. He summons up his guts, and makes his way around the kitchen, looking for any damage to the room itself. If a mutant did it, it's not impossible there'd be some splash damage, what with how violent most of their fights get.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 12:33pm

Things are overturned, shattered, but theres very little blood. Just a small amount in and around the outline.

Blind finds nothing, though there are a few squirrels outside in a tree.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 12:33pm

I throw an ephemeral glance at Blind.

"Yes, you're doing a fantastic job of maintaining our cover. At least we're inside…"

Siamko looks toward the window.

"……so then, why would a garden variety mother of one be familiar with someone who could do this?"

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Pester on May 25, 2007, 12:37pm

"Yeah sure, but look at all the smashed stuff. I don't know why they'd go ahead and clean up all the blood, but not bother cleaning up all this debris. I'm thinking the blood was part of this, maybe it was her power or something."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 12:37pm

I look at him, a little amazed, a little exasperated at his comment.

"You think she'd know if they could do this?"

I glance at the outline.

"Well, until it happened."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 12:38pm

I turn to Joshua.

"Maybe. Or maybe she fought back, and her attacker, or attackers' blood got mixed in. Didn't want to take the chance."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 12:43pm

As the new mutants examine the scene, there is a scratching from out the window. Then a squirrel swings in on the shade's drawstring, letting go of the string at the apex of its swing, and lands on the kitchen counter, next to a steak knife display. It grabs the nearest knife handle in both its adorable little paws, and begins to spin around in a circle, the knife scraping the counter the first few spins, before it gains enough momentumum to be level with the countertop. Then the squirrel lets go, the knife flying at Zephyr. It makes squirrel'y sounds of victory. All in all…not your normal squirrel event. Infact, not even your normal anything.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Pester on May 25, 2007, 12:43pm

"Either way, I'd like to get a sample of some of this blood back to Dr. McCoy, maybe he can find something interesting about it."

Pester grabs the materials necessary, then uses one of the victim's butter knives to scrape up some dried blood, then stash it in a little ziploc baggie.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Siamko "Blind" Vasiliev on May 25, 2007, 12:43pm

"She sought protection from X-Factor. Clearly, she was expecting something nasty."

He sighs.

"Which means this was entirely premeditated. My best guess was that someone intended to silence her. Judging by the brutality, they likely wanted to make an example……only question being, why? What did she possess that needed to remain under wraps?"

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 12:46pm

"Oh, hell."

Coat comes off. I'm sure he can take care of himself, but I don't really want to test his reflexes right now. I throw the coat in the way of the knife. It should take it out of the way.

"I think any doubts about this being the garden variety of killing can safely be squashed." I sigh. "And I thought today was going to be a good day…"

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on May 25, 2007, 12:47pm

"Holy crap!"

More out of reflex than anything I manage to knock the knife away with a gust of wind, but I'm surprised at hell by this, no doubt. "Um…guys. Tell me I'm not the only one who's seeing the evil squirrel of death here. Please."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 12:49pm

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 12:49pm

The knife goes clattering away, landing somewhere out of sight. The squirrel is shaking a paw, classic villain style at the New Mutants, before turning and charging back towards the window, obviously making an escape.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Siamko "Blind" Vasiliev on May 25, 2007, 12:50pm

"Hm?"

Blind turns from the corpse outline, looking almost disinterestedly at the squirrel while holding his chin.

"….really need to stop getting so lost in my musings."

He attempts to redirect the squirrel's vision so it runs smack into a wall.

"Don't stomp it!"

I wait and watch as Joshua ties it up.

And then I toe punt it anyway.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 1:09pm

When the door opens, it reveals a woman that, just by looking, you can tell defines the words 'Soccer Mom'. Her head is cocked towards the tree, a look of confusion on her face.

"Is he chasing a squirrel through a tree?"

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Risk on May 25, 2007, 1:10pm

And I can still hear inside.

"Yes. I am the very definition of an unstable sociopath. Don't mind me."

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 1:12pm

The woman doesn't seem to have an answer for that, so she looks at the others. "Is…is Ela alright? The police wouldn't say what happened? Did someone break in? Did someone get hurt?" She seems to be trying to peer around the people at the door to get a look.

Blind sighs again and shuts off her vision…..or at least the part of it that would let her see a blood soaked kitchen.

The squirrel glares at Damien. Then it begins to call down the furry wrath of the squirrel goddess, speaking with a clarity of purpose used by priests and politicians.

He says that Damien will 'face the wrath of the razor sharp bristles of Satan-Squirrel's tail."

But since Damien doesn't speak squirrel, all he hears are squeaks. And he grabs the squirrel of doom.

"Oh. I see." The woman replies to Pester. "He's the oddest person to come here in a long time." she looks at Damien, making it clear to whom she refers. "When will you be leaving? It upsets the children to have strangers around."

Then Pesters words sink in.

"She was WHAT?!"

Pester scales the tree easily. Infact, its like the branches were all spaced just right for steps and hand-holds. Pester climbs to the top of the tree almost right away. It gives a perfect vantage point to see the neighborhood.

Its a good thing too, cause otherwise they probably wouldn't see the small mob of housewives marching (not walking, but actual marching in unison) towards the house they're at, until it was too late to avoid them.

Re: New Mutants #127 - Desperate Mutantwives
Post by Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner on May 25, 2007, 2:09pm

As everyone knows, an average housewife needs thirty minutes at 350 degrees to be well done, but Lex doesn't go that high. A few start to stumble, and all of them start to sweat.

But they still move forward, the first few having reached the yard, opening the gate, the one in the lead holding an old fashioned hand-powered egg beater. She starts turning it, and holds it threateningly at the nearest person, who happens to be Pester.

"Hey Blind! Wherever you are, look around for any people or things that could screw around with somebody's senses!"

Pester backs up. He uses the handle of his sword in an attempt to smack the egg beater out of the woman's hands, without hurting her.

As Blind makes his Dragon, the housewives stop attacking. It becomes obvious why, as one of the wive's no longer marches with the others, turning towards the dragon, then to the mutants, as the dragon in the air explodes, into tiny pieces, which veer towards the New Mutants, which can see that they are now bees. Killer bees, even.

By Zephyr's and Lex's powers combined, its CAPTAIN PLANET! …No, wait. Its just a flaming tornado. Its biblical. The bee's die, tiny charred husks dropping to the ground in droves.

As Blind shuts down the woman's senses, he suddenly feels like he's floating in a pool of water. Or not floating, sinking. Drowning. She's making him drown, he realizes. His lungs are burning for oxygen. Its all fading out. Blind is about to die, and he knows it.

And then Pester tackles hers, and her illusion on Blind shatters, allowing him to inhale air again.

"So, I say we haul ass back to the mansion so we can get a grip on things. We're not getting any information out of this army…"

Pester moves to get into the van.

Cyclops helps Pester with Regan, while Rogue stays just next to Lady Mastermind, her ungloved hand ready to grab, it seems, her throat. Rogue calls for the rest to follow.
