Hellions: Good Girls Never Die #4 ~ Doll’s Daggers

***

Cover Description: A young girl with long golden brown hair with very prominent curls, aged around six and wearing a white dress running her tongue over the blade of a dagger.

***

The sun beat down as the water flicked in the air shimmered in the light. Of course, the person doing the flicking wasn’t in much position to appreciate the beauty of this. Kelly hit the ground hard, water from the dirty puddle in the alleyway being thrown up into the air. A slight giggle came from behind her as she began to get to her feet, hampered by the throbbing pain running down her right arm.

A foot smashed into her jaw, dropping her again. Blood trickled down her chin from her lip, as she glared up in defiance. A little girl walked out of the shadow that covered the majority of the alleyway, and she stared down at Kelly, who was now on her knees. The girl’s face shone with what seemed to be an eternal innocence, exuding sweetness. She looked like a pristine China Doll come to life.

“I’m free,” she giggled. “I’m free. I’m free, I’mfreeI’mfreeI’mfree!” Another kick went straight to Kelly’s stomach, and she doubled over in pain.

“I’m been waiting a long time to be let out,” the girl said in a conversational tone, staring up at the sky. As her gaze settled on the sun, it began to retreat behind a cover of clouds. She looked back down at Kelly with a sweet smile. Kelly placed a hand on one of the girl’s shoes, and another on her knee, trying to pull herself up without really thinking about it. The China Doll girl shook her off with ease, kicking her again in the ribs. A dull crack echoed in the alleyway, and Kelly involuntarily spat out some of the blood that was oozing into her mouth.

“You knew you were going to blow away. You said it a long time ago. But nobody listened, did they,” the doll girl taunted. “Did you even listen to yourself?” She looked at Kelly and giggled again. “What am I talking about? That’s a silly question. Of course you didn’t.”

She pushed Kelly to the floor and stamped hard on Kelly’s arm, twisting her foot and stamping again until another crack was heard. A scream left Kelly’s lips. One that she cut short as soon as she could.

“Not going to give me the satisfaction?” the doll girl smiled, putting all of her weight on Kelly’s broken arm. “Too bad. You already did. The crack was enough, but hearing you scream at all… it almost made up for everything. Almost.” She followed the word with another stamp, this time on Kelly’s chest, breaking another rib. She was lucky the rib didn’t puncture her lung.

Blood made its way out of her lips when she opened them to try and speak. Fumbling over the first word several times, she gave up.

“What was it? Come on, spit it out,” the doll girl told her, her innocent smile replaced with a malicious smirk.

“Who are you?” Kelly asked, the bitter tang of her blood heavy on her tongue.

“Who am I?” the little girl repeated. “Who am I?” the smile faded from her lips and was replaced with a look of annoyance, which followed the smile’s lead, as a look of mild anger settled on her face. She began kicking Kelly repeatedly in the stomach. “I’m what doesn’t belong! What I am is because of you! And what I’m not is because of you too! It’s your fault I never belonged, because you were always everything that I can’t be! It’s your fault I don’t have a place, because the way you act never makes one for me! And it’s your fault I’m me!” she screamed, kicking Kelly all the while. Eventually Kelly was granted the boon of fading into unconsciousness.

The sun shone, glistening through the torrent of rain, diffracting through the rain drops and beaming its split light on those below. Just a touch of it brightened the darkness that had characterised the night departed and caused the shadows still lingering to flee. The rain bounced off of a large, sparkling, silvery shell that lay in the corner of an out of the way alley.

A quiet, dull splash was heard as a raindrop hit the a large, sparkling, silvery shell that lay in the corner of an out of the way alley. Others followed suit, eventually barraging the dome, bouncing or sliding off of it. The dull pitter-patter woke Kelly less than gently. Still curled up on the floor in the back of an alleyway, she placed a hand on the cold, dank floor and pushed herself up slightly.

The night had been bitter, with the chilling wind biting through her clothes down to her bone. She bumped her head on the shell. One that she didn’t remember making. Rationalising that she must have done so in her sleep, she concentrated on it. It flickered for a moment before she brought it down, closing in on itself. The rain now bore down on her, soaking her. It was tempting to put the shell back up and just… go back to sleep.

There wasn’t time. She clutched the smooth orb she recently gained tightly, running a hand over the frictionless surface. Putting it into her backpack, a shining disk formed beneath her feet and she rose into the air slowly and silently.

Her backpack began to shake abruptly. Alarmed, she took it off and rummaged through it. The orb burst out of it, shaking almost violently and shifting colours every second. An ambivalent swirl of colour twisted within it, threatening to burst out of it in a brilliant explosion of light. Kelly lunged at it, trying to seize it, but it seemed to respond more violently the closer she got. It shot off away from her, rising above the clouds and onwards.

“Thank god,” she sighed in relief. Glad to be able to take this out of anyone’s sight, she followed up above the clouds. A shudder ran through her as she rose through the freezing haze, meeting the sun on the other side. It shone down brilliantly on her and she allowed herself to be distracted for a moment.

Just a moment. As the orb shot off again, she followed it. It crashed down into a mausoleum, smashing through the roof. The rock twisted in on itself, caving down noisily. Reluctantly, Kelly dropped in after it. Dissipating the disc in a quick flash, she dropped into the mausoleum on top of the rubble. She immediately began casting the rubble aside trying to uncover the orb. A chunk of rubble smashed into the nearby wall, splintering further and dropping to the floor. The orb burst out of the remaining rubble before she could get to it, and settled gently on the tomb… before rising again and crashing into it.

Kelly jumped forwards to pull the orb away from whoever’s tomb and remains it had just desecrated. Oddly, she couldn’t lift it. It had imbedded itself in the ribcage of the skeleton that resided in the tomb.

Oh, god. Shouldn’t be here. Shouldn’t be touching that…

Nauseous, Kelly continued pulling at it, but she found that she couldn’t, no matter what. A book lay beside the skeleton and the orb began moving again, towards it. Plucking it out of the tomb reluctantly in the hopes that the orb would follow and leave the remains alone, she fell backwards abruptly and the book fell open in front of her. The orb shot out again and settled, falling in front of her with a dull thud.

An arm reached out of the tomb.

A low groaning followed as the skeleton hoisted itself awkwardly out of the tomb. One of its legs caught on the inside of the tomb, and it ripped it out, smashing through the side of the stone sepulchre. The groaning escalated into a single roar followed by a silence. Kelly stared at it, frozen in fear. Dust began swirling around the skeleton. So much dust began to rise that the skeleton was actually blocked from view for a moment. It seemed to flow into where the skeleton had just been, and stillness settled on the mausoleum.

When she opened her eyes again she saw a… person… hovering there; glowing radiantly and exuding energy. A wave of his arm drew the book to him, and it closed as it landed in his arms. He didn’t really have any apparent features… it was all masked by the almost blinding golden glow coming off of him.

“What impudence renders you daring enough to trespass my rest?” It came out as a harsh, booming voice, barely discernable from a roll of thunder. Not waiting for an answer, he looked her over and a deep… crackling came from his throat. Was it a laugh? It seemed like it, but it sounded intensely inhuman.

The orb rose into the air again, swirling red and blackness inside it. It flew straight at him and was swatted aside simply.

“The tome. You are here for my tome,” he stated simply, opening the book.

“Who are you?”

“Auramazdāh.” He let go of the book and it dropped, open, in front of her. “You wish to have the book? Read it. Touch it.”

She crawled forwards to the book and looked it over gingerly. It was written in ornate Arabic; the page was open on an… an oath.

“J- jho bhe yeh paarega, sirf paak ih hosakta he, verhnah vho cabinee ihs kitaab kho utha saktha he.” The words stung her throat slightly as she spoke. She reached to the book with a shaking hand, placing a finger on it. It burned. She pulled her hand away immediately, clutching it with her other hand comfortingly.

“You lack purity. Leave here before this affront moves me to take action in anger.”

“But I don’t have anyway to go home!”

The energy dispersed around his eyes – his deep black eyes – as he looked her over again, much more warily this time.

“Qlippoth,” he whispered.

“What-?”

With a wave of his hand, she found herself gone.

***

“Back so soon?” he ran a fleeting glance over Kelly, and she shrank away from the angry disappointment in his eyes.

“Chesed, I-” her voice quavered slightly while confusion lay in her eyes. She was still unsure of what she had seen. She was unsure that she even wanted to know what she had seen.

“Do- not- repeat- my- name!” he roared, emphasising each word excessively. He stepped towards her, drawing his arm back for a moment as if to strike her. She shrank away, squeezing her eyes shut and flinching expectantly. She opened an eye cautiously a moment later and saw Chesed pacing back and forth. It took a moment for her to realise where they were.

Chesed had never left the chamber in which they found the orb to begin with. He had waited there. Contacted his brethren. Prepared. And this stupid girl was wasting his time.

“What was it?”

They had entrusted it all to her? They must have realised that when – not if, when – she would fail, then they would die. And yet they left things to rest on her? A degree of the matter could be blamed on Tiphareth, but their foolish acquiescence left them just as culpable. Could they not see their path now?

“What was what?” his tone was much calmer, but his patience with the mortal was still wearing thin.

“The- the skeleton thing,” she replied. Her voice was still unsteady, and her nervousness was irritating Chesed.

“Auramazdāh. A lesser form of divinity, also birthed of conceptual existence.” His eyes rested on her for just a moment – rather than looking at her they seemed to be looking through her. Judging her.

“His tome will imbue you with the knowledge you need to bring your friend back. It will not equip you with the will or the means.” The tone of his voice was cold. “If you saw him, it may not bode well for you.”

Kelly pushed herself away from the wall and took a moment, taking a better look around. It only took that moment for her to realise that the room was somehow devoid of any colour that had been there the last time she was there. It was like someone had captured it in a photograph negative and replaced it with the reality…

“He said I couldn’t take it; that I had to be pure to do that, and that I wasn’t pure.”

He looked her over once again.

“Ah. I understand now. Not truly an impurity within… but an impurity without.” He turned and stared her in the eyes intently. His were hollow and cold, with no hint of life within.

“Undehr seh nikle-oh.”

“Undehr seh nikle-oh,” he repeated. Only a moment had passed since he first said the words and, to his irritation, Kelly spent that moment watching him with honest confusion. Her expression broke as a sharp pain cut into her chest. Something swelled and twisted inside. She dropped to a knee with a grimace and something burst out of her chest. A shimmering wisp of darkness floated in the air.

“Get up.”

She pushed up with her arms, but they gave way quickly.

“I said; Get up.” His voice was like a crack of a whip. Driving. Commanding. Fear inspiring.

This time she managed to push herself to her feet, clutching her chest, still in pain. She took her hand away from her chest and was surprised when she didn’t see blood. She was even more surprised when she realised there was no wound in her chest. Not even a mark. Even the pain began to subside.

“This,” he laid heavy emphasis on the first word, as if a prelude to some grand declaration, “is part of your soul. Something forcibly introduced? It seems that way. Would you even know? Perhaps not.” He din’t leave a pause long enough between questions for her to answer. A sweep of his arm caused the shimmering darkness to rise and even… billow? A word as good as any other, but the true sight was almost indescribable.

“It is something of… magnificent beauty. Far more potent and wondrous than the other side of your soul. That which is still inside, that is. Really, though, this was never a part of yours… but something separate entirely. Something far more valuable. Fascinating.”

He closed is hand into a tight fist. The shining remnant faded, folding in on itself, and in on itself, and in on… nothing.

“And now it is gone.” He flicked his wrist and drew his hand back into his sleeve. “Tell me girl… how does it feel?”

She shivered slightly and pulled her arms across herself, clutching her shoulders with the opposite arms.

“I want to go home,” she whispered softly.

With a light sigh, he walked towards her. Laid a hand on her shoulder. Gave a smile. A fleeting one.

“You will.” He paused. “Bare and extend your arm.”

She acquiesced almost immediately. He placed a finger on her arm. She bit down on her lip as a sigil and a circle dissected into thirty-two equal parts carved itself into her arm. After a few moments, he spoke again.

“It’s done. You can return to your home, but I will draw you back here when I am prepared for the next move.” He gestured to her arm. “You are now bound to us until the point of the completion of your task.”

She was already beginning to fade away.

“I may call you back at any time.”

Kelly faded slowly back into the chamber in which Chesed stood, awaiting her.

“You are well?” he asked her, almost as a formality. She nodded cheerily. Oddly cheerily; more so than she had been in quite a while.

“Then you will go and see Auramazdāh again. I have a guide for you. Now that Auramazdāh is familiar with you, you will not gain access to his mausoleum again without this guide. Kishab?”

A young man appeared as if out of nowhere. Bowing low, he locked his eyes onto the floor and addressed Chesed with a lowered voice. “Lord Chesed, fourth of the mighty Sephirot; how may I serve you?”

“You take my name too lightly. Refrain from doing so within walls.” Chesed gestured at Kelly. “Lead her into Auramazdāh’s resting place.”

Kishab rose and ran his eyes over Kelly. “But of course, Fourth Lord of the holy ten.”

“Do not let Kishab’s appearance deceive you. He is a Shabriri daemon.” Chesed walked over to Kelly and slipped something into her hand out of Kishab’s sight. “This should serve you well when you are in need.” He looked back at Kishab. “Take her there now.”

“Yes, Fourth Lord.” Taking Kelly by the hand, he stood still as the air turned to water and swirled around them. A moment later they found themselves within the walls of the mausoleum again.

Strangely enough, Auramazdāh stood there as if awaiting them.

“You dare to to stand within my walls again?” The words boomed out loudly, almost as a roar. Kelly looked at him beseechingly, and stepped forwards with a hint of reluctance.

“Please, just… let me see the book,” she pleaded. Auramazdāh gave her an odd look; confusion mixed with awe.

“What happened to you, girl? The impurity… it is gone. As if it was never there…”

“Please, the book.”

He gave a slight nod of his head and the tome appeared in his hand. Walking over to her, he presented it into her hands.

Only to have a blade driven into his heart. Almost instantly, he felt his essence ebbing away. Not only fading naturally, but being drawn away… into the dagger.

“I- I am immortal… How is this possible?”

Kelly smirked cruelly. “Death’s a girl of many talents, babe. Cosmic Joker, maestro, master, magician, vindictive bitch… She’s the flautist and I’m just dancing to the tune.” She twisted the blade and pulled it out. Dust covered it as it shined brilliantly, glowing with a sickly red hue.

“If you live, you can die. Suck it up, bitch.”

She turned around and faced her shocked companion, once again, the picture of complete innocence.

“What?” she asked, smiling sweetly but visibly confused, with an innocent shrug of the shoulders.

I'm not really happy with the way this turned out… I did everything but the first post in the last hour, and it just feels very rushed.

Did you have a time limit as to when it had to be up?

A time limit? Well… self imposed, but besides that, no.

Well I only read the first post so far, as my parents are watching Raines in the same room and I can't concentrate. But that part looks meticulously sadistic. It looks like a good deal of time and care was put into it, considering how Kelly was punished. If you want more care in the rest of it, why put a time limit on yourself?

Hm… you make a good point… really, I wanted to get these finshed before the end of next week…

I may redo it in a little while.
