Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 9:19am

After straightening out the mess in Murder World, the Hellions - all of them save for Wildfire, who's currently being checked by Hank McCoy - are brought to the X-Mansion. They receive stares from the faculty and student body alike; apparently, news of the 'news kids' has spread quick. Some of the kids look amused by the Hellions 'attire', some of them look impressed by the rumors they've heard, some of them just retreat to their rooms. The group is lead to the Wreck Room by Jean Grey and instructed to sit and wait. Charles Xavier will be meeting with them shortly.

[I've got some business to handle with this laptop, so I won't be around until later this morning, probably noonish. Feel free to wander about the mansion as you please.]

I guess I try to avoid looking at Kelly, but I'm not exactly pushing Megs off me, so it's still probably bad in some way.

Nicolette took a seat on the couch gingerly. She wasn't in the best of conditions, but was nevertheless smiling.

"As I mentioned to some of you, I was probably to blame for that affair," she said. She sounded sufficiently regretful. "I was contacted by the X-Men to blow Shaw's operations open. I did, and I arranged for you all to be brought here. However, Shaw found out about it. That's pretty much all there is to it. Take it as you will."

She closed her eyes and leaned on the back of the couch. She supposed her actions would have to have some consequences…

"Thanks for selling us out, Nicarette."

I glare at her.

"I'm not staying here. And neither is Meg. You guys can have your feel good little upstate Bohemian school, I know where I belong."

"Then you're both idiots," said Nicolette with a tired voice. "I didn't sell "us" out - who is that, anyway? I sold Shaw out, and my price was the well-being of the Hellions. Show some gratitude."

“Jay Livingston, I presume? I would appreciate it if you directed your sentiments towards me instead of Nicolette, considering her actions were done at my behest.”

Professor Xavier wheels himself into the room with Emma Frost following close behind, looking at the Hellions with her typical indignation. She does seem a bit more temperate than the last time she encountered them, though; she’s moved from giving them a look of complete disgust and contempt and switched to the same level of disgust and contempt she gives most of the world.

“Greetings, Hellions.” Professor Xavier takes his place in the center of the room, calm and cool all the way. “First I would like apologize for the ordeal you were put through today; Shaw’s connection with Arcade came as a great surprise, and we had no idea he would resort to such extreme measures. Nevertheless, you handled the situation in an expert manner; even given the unconventional nature of the challenge and the lack of time to prepare, you rose and managed to overcome it. I’ve had the time to learn about your various backgrounds, and while there are some questions I would like answered by certain individuals…I see great potential among you. All of you.

“Which brings me to my proposal.” Professor Xavier waves to Emma, motioning for her to stand by his side. “Ms. Frost has agreed to supervise and train you, as a new Hellions team. You will be set up within the mansion, allowed all the privileges and bound by all the rules of the New Mutants. Like the New Mutants, you will be taken out for the occasional mission. Like the New Mutants, you will have your own rooms and attend classes, free of charge.”

Some of the Hellions look ready to speak, but Xavier waves a hand. Not finished. “Now, I must stress that all of this is purely voluntary. I’m aware that there are those among you who wish to join the New Mutants.” He glances Kelly’s way. “This will be allowed. I’m also aware that there are those among you who wish to stay at the Hellfire Club.” He glances Jay’s way. “This will also be allowed, though I don’t recommend it. You need to understand that you are, currently, in a very precarious situation. The Hellfire Club was crumbling before Shinobi Shaw left; it’s currently a rambles, breaking apart more by the hour. It will likely recover, yes, but there’s another factor you need to consider: This Carmen Rosewell woman.”

He brings out a copy of Newsweek, about a year old, with Carmen’s face on the cover and the word’s ‘IRON WOMAN’ beneath. “This woman is currently the head of LexiCorp, a very influential and powerful pharmaceutical company. We’ve found traces of her presence in Shaw’s systems – but nothing concrete enough to build a case. And if what you all say is true, and I have reason to believe it is…then you’ve all made enemies with an extremely powerful foe. My experience with people of her type is that she will seek to exact some sort of revenge upon you, and if she has someone like this ‘Nexus’ character in her employ, than she can appear anytime, anywhere. Outside of these walls, away from my X-Men, I cannot guarantee your safety. I extend my hand in welcoming you to my Institute, and I would hope that you accept.”

Xavier wheels around in his chair and heads out the way he came, leaving Emma to sit in a chair across from the Hellions. “It might be a taxing decision, I understand, so I will leave you with some time to consider. Ms. Frost will answer any and all questions, and she will inform me when you have reached a consensus.”

With that Xavier leaves, and Emma Frost lays back in the chair and crosses her legs, looking on with the slightest smirk.

"Idiots, huh? I had a bloodless way to take Shaw out, and it was days away from being realized. Getting the X-Men involved just gave you all a ticket to Murderworld, a place I don't think any of you enjoyed being in. Look, I had Shinobi dead to rights. He was on his way out. And in a way that didn't result in Wildfire getting screwed up or us having some crazily powerful woman trying to kill us. I told you before, you think you know this game, Nico, but you're a rank amateur, and your amateur status is what nearly got the lot of you killed. I was ready to take Shinobi out, and yet I was the one person he trusted enough to not send to clown death camp."

I pause, taking in all that Xavier said.

"I don't care what shape the Hellfire Club is in or what superhuman Nico managed to get Shinobi to unleash on you. I'm going back there, and I'm able to defend Meg. I don't need to go get some paraplegic know-it-all to bail me out."

I stand.

"Would you imagine that I've been called arrogant, hmm?" Nicolette yawned. "I really have no interest in what wonderous plans you may have had. Considering what a phony you are, I doubt they exist, so I'd rather not spend my time discussing them. Of course, I should point out that YOU didn't seem to be in danger at any time. A funny coincidence, but a thing of the past for me… If you want to remain a puppet, it's your god-given right to be able to."

Ignoring the argument going on, I turned to Emma Frost.

"Can I see Wildfire please, Ms. Frost?" I whimpered, practically pleading.

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 12:53pm

Emma smiles. She was enjoying the little tit-for-tat; all that drama, all that passion, and Nicolette's mannerisms - it was almost as if she were the one talking in the girl's stead. Potential for that one, yes.

But, amusing as it was, there were matters that need tending to. "I hate to interrupt - I really, truly do - but if you've already made your intention clear, then feel free to leave, Mr. Livingston." She waved, that smirk growing a little wider. "I'm sure you'll fit quite nicely in Shinobi's seat."

Emma turns to Kelly, nodding. "Of course you may, my dear." The directions to Dr. McCoy's lab are placed in Kelly's head.

"Thank you," I gave her a smile and then headed for Dr. McCoy's lab. After a little while I found my way there - delayed by the experience of having something placed directly into my brain.

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

When Kelly arrives, she sees Wildfire laying on the examination table, with Dr. McCoy standing over her. She seems to be unconscious, with numerous diodes attached to hear head, taking scans.

Dr. McCoy is so involved with the readings on the screen that it takes him a moment to notice Star's presence. "Oh, hello. Kelly, isn't it? May I be of some assistance?"

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Amelia "Heaven" Chow on Jan 24, 2007, 1:07pm

I glare at Emma.

"How remarkably mature of you, Mizz Frost. It's been a treat, I'm sure. The rest of you, have fun with the psychotic mastermind that Shinobi sent after you due to your clumsy amateur of a leader's inept attempts at…whatever the hell it was she was attempting."

I offer my hand to Meg before striding out.

"Come on, Meg. Places to go, people to see."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Kelly Alecia "Edenstar" Lisa on Jan 24, 2007, 1:15pm

As soon as I saw Wildfire laying prone, I felt my throat go dry.

"Oh god… Wildfire… What kind of monster would do this to you?" I asked myself before turning to Dr. McCoy.

"Um… yes. Kelly. I just, uh- wanted to see how Wildfire's doing, Dr. McCoy…"

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on Jan 24, 2007, 1:17pm

Nicolette looked towards Meghan woefully.
"Meg - I'm sorry we have to part on these terms. Visit sometimes. Bye…"

She made sure to look like she didn't want her to go… but only so much that it still looked reasonable.

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 1:27pm

"That would depend on your definition of well-being, Ms. Thorley." He turns away, running a hand over Wildfire's head. "She's sustained a few injuries, but nothing too serious, and while I would not go so far as to say that she possesses a healing factor, her body does seem to heal at a rather high rate - I imagine she'll be up and about tomorrow. Two days at the most. However," Henry's voice drops, definitely bringing on some bad news. "This Rosewell woman did quite a number on her brain. I can only speculate, of course, but it would seem that, in order for her to control her flame, her body secreted a potent stimulant within her brain that heightened her mental state; the more flame she needed to control, the more of this substance was used, and I doubt there was any real limit to how much she could take - though this no doubt had some adverse effects on her sanity." He pauses and looks back at Kelly. "Eh, stop me if you don't understand anything; I've been told that I have the tendency to overdo explanations.

Beast steps aside, letting Kelly approach. "What Rosewell has done, though, is destroyed the pathway that this substance comes from, effectively cutting off Wildfire's ability to control flame. Her body still seems to be resistant to intense temperatures, and, technically speaking, she hasn't lost her power - she's simply lost the ability to call upon it. If I had a sample of the substance, I could possibly administer it to her in doses, which would theoretically allow her to call upon the power again…but it would seem that Rosewell extracted the substance from her system, completely, and with the pathway destroyed, it won't make more. To put it, as they say, in a nutshell: Wildfire is powerless, and it is highly doubtful she will ever be anything but."

"…..hm. The sample was in the possession of Naga. She should still have it."

Blind appears, floating. He waves to Beast.

"Greetings, Dr. McCoy."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 1:40pm

Beast leaps back in surprise, but he recoils quickly enough. "You must be Blind." He pushes his readjusts his glasses. "Charles told me a little of your powers; I do hope you decide to stay around, we could use someone of your abilities. Though, I must say, I hope you have some measure of respect for privacy, as well."

He turns back to Wildfire, taking in Blind's suggestion. "If you do have a sample, I'll analyze it…but I can't promise anything. I primarily work based on the assumption that my subject is at least vaguely human in structure, but Wildfire's body is…different, in many ways. I'll have to proceed cautiously." His eyes widen, remembering something. "By the way, you might be interested to know that there's strong reason to believe that Wildfire has two siblings residing on these very grounds."

"You could stop worrying."

Wildfire's eyes open and she sits up, looking at Kelly. She smiles. A weak, small one, but a smile. "You're all right. That's good."

"I regret not being able to arrive earlier, Ms. Izabella," Blind says, shaking his head. "It would seem I am all but useless versus technology. Our foe had it in abundance."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 1:55pm

"I don't fault you. It was a sneak attack, and I'm sure you did the best you can given the situation. The important thing is that we all escaped intact." She looks between Blind and Kelly, unsure. "We did escape intact, right?"

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Kelly Alecia "Edenstar" Lisa on Jan 24, 2007, 2:04pm

I looked more carefully at Wildfire. The way she appeared in this moment… startled me a bit. It was the first time since I met her - even when she lay beaten by that scientist - that she actually seemed fragile…

"I'm okay, but I can't stop worrying," I replied with a faint smile. "We did escape intact, yes… though I'm sure we'll be seeing that woman again. You aren't okay, though… I'm so sorry, Wild."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 2:10pm

"I…I know." Wildfire looks into her palm, focuses, tries to draw flame…nothing. She balls into a fist and clenches it tight. "But I'm alive. If I'm alive I can still…I can still do something." If this had been about a month ago, Wildfire would've felt the gravity of the situation; she was a powerless member in a team full of powerful individuals.

But it didn't bother her. Not as much as it would have. "It's weird, though…honestly, I feel great. I don't think I've felt this energized in…ever." She starts to get off the table, but a sharp pain in the side stops it. "My body would disagree, though."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

As I saw her rising I rushed to her side, trying to keep her from getting up.

“Don’t. Rest. You need it. You deserve it.”

I sighed and looked at Dr. McCoy for a moment, and then to Blind before looking back at Wildfire.

“Thank god you’re okay, though. Well, relatively okay. I can’t- I can’t just stay one side and not do anything, though. Tell me what to do for you. Just name it.” I pulled my arms across my chest. “What do you need?”

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 2:19pm

Wildfire's smile comes out in full, and she lays her hand on Kelly's shoulder. "You need stop worrying about me. Seriously. This problem is mine to deal with and overcome. I said I'd use my power to protect you, and I will use my power to protect you…somehow. I just need to find that way. Until then, the best you can do for me is to keep smiling. I don't want to see you unhappy ever again."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Kelly Alecia "Edenstar" Lisa on Jan 24, 2007, 2:22pm

I shook my head, and hugged Wildfire as lightly as I could, trying to make sure she didn’t get hurt by it.

“No problem is only yours to deal with. Not when you’ve got friends – especially not when you’ve got me as a friend. This is your burden. Now it’s mine, also. Like I say, burdens are to be shared. And for you, I’m the one to share them with. I’ll keep smiling, but this is my problem too now. I’ll keep smiling, but you have to let me help you. Somehow.”

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 24, 2007, 2:27pm

Wildfire lays her head to rest on Kelly's shoulder, returning the gesture. "You've already helped much more than you'll ever know."

It's faint, but Kelly can't help but notice that Wildfire's body doesn't have the same warmth it did last time they hugged. It's almost cold…

[Too sweet?]

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Kelly Alecia "Edenstar" Lisa on Jan 24, 2007, 2:39pm

I finally let go of her, and lightly rested her back down onto the table.

“Get some sleep – some rest. You need some. I’ll come back and see you later,” I kissed her on the forehead. I began to head out of the room, waving slightly to both Blind and Dr. McCoy.

“Bye, Dr. McCoy. Bye Blind.”

«No, I thought it was good.»

Not really sure what I'm still doing here. I should be heading back to Japan. My father's probably worried sick if I'm going to leave the Big Hero Six I should probably do it formally and to their faces…but staying here doesn't seem so bad, as either a New Mutant or a Hellion, really.

"So…" I ramble, approaching Frost. "…what's your track record with teaching anyway?"

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

Erebus sits upon one of the couches of the Wreck Room, pensively staring into space. He did not look particularly happy. It wasn't even about Nexus and Rosewell - he was over that for the moment. It was about the new… situation. It simply wouldn't do. He couldn't live like this, could he? With the Hellions being run by the Hell Fire Club it was a different story. No real rules except "whatever you do, do it away from the Club." Here? Not only were there more rules governing his actions, he couldn't lie about following those rules when he wasn't. Too many telepaths.

Could he stay? Probably not. Even if he could stand it (which he probably couldn't)… he was a mass murderer. The kind of person that fits right at home with the type of Hell Fire Club that Shinobi was running, but here? He was the type of person they were supposed to be stopping. So back to the Club then? No… he has no interest in the Club. It was the team that entertained him. But it wasn't looking like he would be sticking it out with the team, under the new management.

What to do, what to do…

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

When I got down to the room again, I couldn’t stop thinking about Wildfire- and what had been done to her. She told me not to worry, but…

And then there was Ms. Rosewell… that horrible woman. She did that to Wildfire. She threatened my family – the only thing that I could call that is what I was surrounded by at the moment (barring Meghan and Jay). She even threatened the memory of my family. She’ll be back- I know it…

As soon as I entered the room I headed to the opposite side of the room from Meghan and Jay, sitting down with Kidd.

I glance from Nicolette to Jay.

"I might have come to visit, hell I may have stayed if…if I still had friends on this team…."

'Ms. Frost' turns to Kidd, looking with a mix amusement and…mostly amusement. The last time she saw Kidd, the girl was about ten feet tall, green, and threatening to squeeze her head off, so it's not too surprising. "I have experience from teaching the original Hellions, and I've been involved with children in numerous stages of my life. I would say I'm quite experienced. Others might disagree."

“Yeah. He did. He said that Wildfire used to have something in her brain – something that would secrete a stimulant that would allow her to access and control her powers. He also said that that Rosewell woman cut out whatever that something was. So now, with a sample of that substance, he could give her doses that would allow her to call upon her powers, but that she’d be unable to do so under her own power. Maybe forever. She hasn’t lost her powers… she just can’t call upon them,” I replied sadly. “Strangely enough, she doesn’t seem too unhappy,” I added.

Splitting Off: Jay, Meghan
Going Back to Japan, maybe: Kidd
Staying with the Hellions: Nicolette, assuming Blind, Wildfire
Becoming New Mutants: Kelly

Not to put any pressure, but be sure to make your intentions clear at some point. Also, if you want to be on both New Mutants and Hellions teams, that's fine. If Wolverine can be on two teams, so can you.

I mean, I’m in the same place no matter what, and you aren’t going to be around – you’ll find me at the mansion no matter what,” I stated, not unkindly.

"If I might interject." Emma stands crossing over to Kelly. "Kelly, far be it from me to tell you where you belong. But if this team holds, it would immeasurably benefit from your presence. You could think of this as new chance with the Hellions - the two elements that obviously distressed the most are gone, leaving you with a team composed of better members. Blind, hopefully. Nicolette. Wildfire. Perhaps Kidd. This could be a new chance for you. I suggest this: There's nothing to say that you have to make your decision so hastily. Perhaps you can try both teams? See which one befits you best, then choose."

Ultimately, the choice is yours. About the goody-goody thing though…keep in mind, Emma Frost is hardly a saint. It won't be quite as dirty as Shaw would've had them, but the Hellions missions will have a typically darker tint.

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

Nicolette blinked innocently.

"No offense to Miss Frost, but she hasn't known us for very long yet, has she?" She glanced at the person in question politely. "Being current leader and - indeed - the only leader in the team's history, my word should have some weight. But, of course, I will consider her opinion."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Dillon "Time-Hopper" Drummond on Jan 24, 2007, 6:30pm

Huh, didn't see that coming. Nico doesn't seem like the type to give up something like team leadership unless: A) She's doing it because she knows we'll probably wind up making her leader anyway and it's just for the ego boost (but I don't think she's THAT self-absorbed) or B) She's trying to wash her hands of any potential mishaps that could occure while we're on missions.

Huh. I used the word "we" and it's various forms a lot in that little monologue didn't I? Guess I am sticking around.

This is interesting.

Emma looks between Naga and Nicolette; both wonderful girls, both full of ambition, both eerily similar…to be young. Emma was almost tempted to shed a tear. She didn't, of course, but the sentiment was there.

"Well, this is a fairly new concept, I say we go about it in a scientific manner. All those willing to try their hand at being team leader should make the desire known. We then rotate leaders every mission or until the current one proves too incompetent - whichever comes first - and we settle on who's best after all the candidates have had their turn." She looks around, though she has a fairly solid idea who'd want to try first. "Anyone interested?"

Nicolette stepped a little closer to Ms. Frost, and spoke to her:
"Actually, I'd have a small request concerning the selection process. Naturally, I'll abide by your choice, but I'd like it if I could ask all potentials a certain question - a simple, basic one - which you'd then consider while making a choice."

Funny. Emma seems to mean every word she's saying to Kelly. I mean, if she was lying I'd notice the heat in her body fluctuate…but then again she could just be using sarcasm. Body heat doesn't change enough when being sarcastic for me to pick it up. I'll have to fine tune that.

"I'd follow Kelly into hell!" I shout, gleefully even though I hope I never actually have to follow her into hell.

"Dear, don't be discouraged." Emma's thought come into Kelly's mind; warm, feeling, caring. "I only worry about your well-being and the teams. I've seen far too many leaders crack, I wouldn't want you to be one."

She then turns to Nicolette. "What would that question be?"

[Alright, just setting up.]

After an hour, the group returns to Wreck Room where Emma waits, reading a novel that she's quick to put away. She sits back in her chair with the usual posh and posterity, addressing them all one by one. After every is in, she stands.

"Dhaara, Kidd, Kelly." She regards each of the three candidates, motioning for each of them to stand. "As I'm sure you're aware, being a team leader is a huge responsibility. Sometimes you must do things that aren't going to be popular with everyone on the team; I believe that was made quite clear by Jay's tirade not too long ago. You must do what ultimately befits your team most, you have to overlook personal relationships and focus on the whole…it's not something everyone can do. The fact of life is that some people - I might even dare to say most people - are not meant to lead. It's simply not in them. Which is fine."

She passes by each other candidates, looking them over. "That is why the alacrity of your decisions to try leading somewhat distresses me; it's not something one should assign to lightly. To that end Nicolette has suggested and I agree that a certain question should be asked: Simply, why do you want to be want to lead? What qualifications do you have for it? What goals do you hope to achieve in the position?"

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Kelly Alecia "Edenstar" Lisa on Jan 25, 2007, 8:47am

I didn't even stop to think before responding.

"When Nico said she wanted to step down, and you asked who was interested in becoming leader, my thoughts went to something that Kidd said to me before leaving the team - she told me to keep them on the straight and narrow. Obviously, that's been a failure so far. But I thought, if no-one else was the leader, that this might be my chance to try and ensure the future of the team leads them in a cleaner direction. Too often I've seen some members ready to take a life," I threw a glance at Naga, hoping it hadn't been noticed by anyone but her, "when it was entirely unecessary. Seemingly just for revenge, or even, god forbid, pleasure or entertainment. And with Nico no longer being the team leader, the team is going to be in complete disaray without her leadership. I think I may be able to prevent that, and have the team organised almost as well as she did. This all depends on the team members' faith in me - something that will obviously be tested, as, unfortunately, was our faith in Nico." At this stage I paused thoughtfully. "However, I have no doubts that Kidd could not do this just as well as I, if not better."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 25, 2007, 10:03am

Unlike Kelly, Emma takes a moment to think of her response, following Kelly's glance to Naga and dwelling on it for a moment.

"I have my own opinion when it comes to taking life, Kelly; I won't lie to you. In certain situations, I do deem it nescessary. However, you have my word that I won't consider such a possibility until all other options are exhausted, and with my telepathy there are usually much more humane and sensible ways to deal with a foe." Emma nods Kelly's way and turns to her in full, looking her in the eyes. "That being said, I intend to take more of a supportive role in your missions. I'll lend advice and suggestion, take the reigns if need be, but ultimately the team will be lead by the actual team leader. It's important that your team have faith in you, very important, but that faith is meaningless if you don't have faith in yourself. Your desire to take the team in a cleaner direction is noble - but it's a fact that, sometimes, there will be no clean direction to take, my dear. That's life, though the average does not continually have such decisions thrust upon it. You will not have that luxury."

Emma rests her hand on Kelly's shoulder, speaking almost motherly. "So I must ask, not out of curiosity but concern - are you sure?"

Looking up at Ms. Frost, I could reply with any of the dozens of thoughts nagging at me, wondering whether I'd be able to do it if this fell on my shoulders, but responded with the most prominent thought I had.

"I have to do my best."

Emma gives Kelly a quick rub before taking her hands off, smiling sincerely - even she finds the act hard to believe. But this Kelly girl had a certain purity to her, a rare quality. Emma has her doubts about her ability to lead, but she doesn't question her place on the team. They need someone like her. "That's all I'll ever ask of you, my dear."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Dhaara "Naga" Falodiya on Jan 25, 2007, 12:01pm

Dhaara also thinks before she answers. She is dealing with a telepath, so lying is probably a bad idea, so she chooses her words very carefully before speaking up.

"I think I ought to be leader because I'm the one who is capable. Leading is not about being everybody's friendalthough I don't have any grudge against anyone here, not even Nicoand it's not about popularity or about character. It's about making choices. Dr. Rosewell got away because, as a team, we did not make the important choices we need to, and because of that, she's still a threat to us. While I don't agree with Nicolette's making important choices without consulting the rest of the team, I do admire her initiative in making those important choices. I think I'm the only one who can make the sort of decisions that a leader needs to make in a tense situation. Kelly was referring to me when she said there were members who needed to take a life, and I disagree with it being unnecessary. This woman already crippled a member of our team, and she's still out there with a powerful ally, and now that we're down in numbers, we could be even more vulnerable. I wasn't motivated from revenge, it was purely a matter of survival. If we, as a team, had the discipline to defer decisions to someone capable of making them, we would have one less enemy on our hands. This isn't a popularity contest, if it was I'd just let Kelly be the leader and leave it at that. It's a question of who is qualified."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order
Post by Last Hero on Jan 25, 2007, 12:18pm

Emma looks at Naga with a strange mix of disdain and approval. The girl certainly has initiative. Drive. Ambition. Emma's seen it in herself far too often to not recognize it in another. And there's no doubt that she makes many strong points.

"I'll admit, there was a time when I thought as you do, Dhaara - to many extents, I still do. If there's one thing that Charles has stressed with me more than any other creed, it's that life is to be taken very, very seriously. Yes, you would have been better served if this Rosewell woman had died in Murderworld." She steps Naga's way, gentle understanding all over, but a solid face. "However, should such a situation arise in which you have their weakest, prone and vulnerable, I cannot allow you to simply kill them. Charles would not allow it, and neither can I…even though I do understand your rationale." Emma speaks quickly now, before Naga can interject. "I will handle that sort of situation myself, and you have my word that any enemy who does us harm will not likely want to face us again. That being said, if you are in the heat of battle, and your survival depends on taking another's life, then - and only then - I will justify your actions. But I must stress that as a last resort."

Emma coughs, finally getting to the point. "That being said, you do seem to have the nescessary attitude for such a position, and, as I said, you make many valid points." She let's the smallest smile sneak through. "You and Kelly seem to be on opposite sides of the coin. I'll be watching closely to see where it lands. Do we understand each other?"

I turned to Dhaara and spoke to her quietly;

“I respect you for your opinion, but honestly, I disagree. Being leader certainly isn’t about popularity or about being everybody’s friend. But it is all about character. You’re right. It is also about making choices, and Dr. Rosewell is still a threat to us. But it was not about survival. Not at the time. We had her down and beaten. Killing her then would have been simply out of spite. We can’t do that. We can’t be like those people. I don’t think that I’m the best candidate for team leader – god knows, I’m probably the worst. But we cannot be like that,” I said to her, a little sadly, and a little kindly.

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

Dhaara nods to Kelly. "I understand how you feel about the subject, but I don't think you understand my motives. There was no spite or malice in my actions, I was seriously worried about what might happen to use if we left her alive. Perhaps she won't come after us again, but perhaps she will. What if she comes after one of us when we're away from the Mansion? When we're separated? What if she goes after Josh and Meghan? These are questions I'd rather not ask, and if the Doctor wasn't out there still, we wouldn't have to."

She smiles to Kelly, and says, "I hope you don't think I'm some kind of monster, Kelly. I'm not. And I really don't want us to dislike each other because of what happened at Muderworld. It wouldn't be good for the team."

“Jay and Meghan can take care of themselves. Jay’s a power nullifier, and Meghan’s a teleporter,” I told her, without a hint of bitterness in my voice. “Though you bring up a good point. We probably need to come up with some way of contacting each other at all times… You’re right, we wouldn’t have this problem. But we shouldn’t kill to get rid of it.”

I placed my hand on her shoulder gingerly.

“I disagree with you, but I don’t think that you’re a monster. I don’t dislike you either. Forget it being good for the team – whether I like someone or not has nothing to do with that. I don’t dislike you. I wouldn’t want to,” I replied sweetly.

Dhaara doesn't offer a fake smile either. "Do I care about you all? I'll readily admit, I'm not a very trusting person. But I'm certainly concerned with your well-being. For the time, we should expect to rely on each other. I don't consider any of you expendable by any means, if that's what you're implying."

"Good to know," she says to Kelly, putting her hand on her's gently. "Perhaps we'll be friends after all."

The look Emma has for Kidd is one of surprise, exceedingly rare for her. "There's nothing with wanting to prove yourself to someone else, though you hardly need to be the leader in order to accomplish that. Wanting no harm to come your teammates is also noble, but I would assume it's a sentiment that all of you share. Tell me - what makes you think you're ready for the position?" Emma takes a solid approach; not too rigid, not too authoritative, but the weight of the matter comes through.

Emma turns to the other Hellions, taking stock of the group. "Very well, then. I'm going to assume that those of you who are here now are here to stay in the foreseeable future. I won't lie, you're a little less than I'd hoped for - a little, mind you - but passable. Blind, Prime, Star, Naga, Knave, Phase, Masstress, Tangle and the little red one downstairs. A fair number, and we'll be adding two more in the coming weeks possibly, after I check a few minor details. As of now you are all official residents of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Mutatis mutandis."

She starts to head out, giving a light wave and an even lighter smile as she goes. "I have quite a bit of paperwork to fill for you all, so I'll be at that, and your new rooms will be assigned shortly. If you need anything, ask. If not, feel free to wander about the mansion as you please.

Emma waits as the others pour out of the room, greeting them and having a few brief conversations as they leave. She makes a mental note to commit some of her thoughts to paper later on - notes on them, observations, simple things to remember. Once her paperwork was completed, at any rate.

After a moment, the room is emptied - except for her and a single charge, Nicolette. "For future reference, if you wish to speak with me, I do have an office." She sits opposite from Nicolette, taking a position that eerily mimics the other. "But this will suffice, of course. What's on your mind, dear?"

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

"Always something," replied Nicolette with some slightly exaggerated elation. Once the words were out, she sunk further into her seat while massaging her chest tenderly.
"For the record, I didn't actually want to talk to you," she quietly followed up, "I just considered it…"

She shifted slightly in discomfort.
"The truth is, while I feel like talking, I don't actually have anything to talk about, so I'm just wasting your time."

Re: Post Mission 3 - The New Order

If Nicolette listened sharply, she might have the whisper of a giggle from Emma - another rarity among many. She'd have to watch herself, at this rate she'd lose her reputation as an Ice Queen, and, heaven forbid, people would actually like her. The thought chilled her.

"While you're here, I feel I do owe you something of an apology." Emma laid back, a finger idly twirling through her hair. "For the situation you were thrust into, of course. I didn't think you would be popular for the decision to help us, but, I must say, the fact that your friends have remained friends in spite of it is…impressive, to put it mildly. Honestly, I'm surprised that Jay, Meghan and Erebus are the only ones who chose to leave." She smiled, wry and small. "Though I doubt their presence will be missed."

Nicolette hesitated for a moment before replying.
"Well, apology accepted," she said, "If you ask me, it was necessary. Not the solution I'd have preferred, but I did what I had to do. Of course… I really would have liked it if no one had left and everyone had gone along with me nicely."
She shrugged theatrically, but she looked serious.
"They didn't though…"

"Don't come down on yourself, dear; it's unbecoming." Emma crossed her legs, going for full comfort. Such a long day past, such a long day ahead. "I send you some information on them; you'll have a much easier time deciphering that than some dull monologue from me." There was also the fact that Emma didn't particularly care to lay it all out. It was a rather complex affair. "At any rate, I've talked enough business for one day, and I'm in more of a mood to hear than be heard. This is a rare occasion, so I suggest you make the best of it. Tell me a little about yourself. I'm curious."

Nicolette propped herself into a slightly straighter pose, and smiled a bit.

That same surprised look comes back, with added amusement. "I could, yes…but there was a time when I wouldn't have even asked. These days I try to practice some degree of restraint. But if you're all right with it, I certainly have no qualms. Simply empty your mind to make the process easier for both of us, and I'll extract what I need."

"Very well."

Emma dives into the recesses of Nicolette's mind, cutting through with a surgeon's skill; being sure to look for relevant things and only the relevant things. She could help but notice the key events and pattern them against her own life - there were many differences, yes, but many similarities as well. Born into high society, expected to meet the standards of perfection, eventually steered away from the family for a new life within the Club - Emma wouldn't have found it to surprising to know that, if Nicolette's path hadn't gone unchanged, she would've ended up going down almost exactly the same path, with almost exactly the same results.

It was slightly disturbing, really.

Emma pulled out with a sigh, taking her previous position with just a bit less of the composure. "You've led an interesting life, Ms. Savard. And familiar, too, if I might say."

She was tempted to simply download her memories as she'd uploaded Nicolette's - for lack of betters words - but there were some things, many things, that she did not care to share. At least, not at the moment. Certain, rather embarrassing events that would not do well if she wanted to garner respect.

"If you saw the person that I was around your age and compared her with the person I am now, you would be hard-pressed to make any sort of connection. I was born rich, pampered, privileged…but isolated. Things were expected of me, things my parents demanded, rules were set and I obeyed, no matter how much I would've preferred not to. I won't go into specifics, but my father was a very unpleasant man."

Emma's gaze hardens, still eye-to-eye. "There came a time when I wanted power, and I used my abilities to gain that power without remorse. When I look in your eyes, I'm reminded of that same look in my own. I'd imagine it's not small assumption to say you enjoy being on top."

Nicolette was surprised, and she couldn't prevent herself from looking like it. Years of practice had given her a lot of control over her face, but there was a minuscule change of expression. She didn't gape or gasp or do any other sort of embarrassing gesture. But you could see it in her eyes…

It took her a while to compose herself enough to reply.
"Yes," she said with almost a whisper, "I love it. It's the greatest thing I can imagine. The respect, the admiration, the obedience and the praise… I just wish it was my own choice."
For a moment, she thought Frost was affecting her brain somehow. She had said the words without thinking, something very much unlike her. And to her surprise, she didn't even wish she could take them back…
"Is it really that I want power? I don't know, I've never thought I want it for the sake of it…"

Very hesitantly, she added:
"I'm sorry about your parents, ma'am…"

"Don't be. The only thing I regret about separating from my family is that I did not do it sooner." That wasn't entirely true, but some things were best left unsaid.

There was a silence. Not awkward, not too long, but a brief period where Emma just stared at the girl across from her. "I'll be candid with you, Ms. Savard…Nicolette." She spoke slow and soft, measuring each word. I know you've heard similar statements from many people, and, believe me, if you live in this house, you will hear it quite a few times to come, but…power is overrated. That's the truth of it." She lets out a contented sigh, thinking of happier times… "One of the greatest joys of my life was leading the Hellions." …and the sadder times that followed. "One of the worst sorrows of my life was losing them. One of my earliest aspirations was to become a teacher, and I suppose this is the realization of that."

Emma sat up, returning her gaze to Nicolette. "My point is this: I would not be at the Institute if I didn't believe in Charles' dream and support it. Despite what others may say or believe, they all know that, if I wanted to be someplace else, I would easily be there. There's nothing wrong with wanting power Nicolette…it's only natural to desire control. The trick of it is to realize there's more. Much more. Judging from your interactions with the others, I assume you've already learned this lesson. My aim is to drive it home, you understand."

It occurs to Emma that Dhaara might need a similar talk, too…the look in that girls eye, like a snake ready to strike…problematic.

Nicolette took a few seconds off to recompose herself. She got into a slightly more dignified pose and returned her countenance to a more or less neutral state. After some uncertainty, she decided not to fake any feelings she wasn't feeling. She looked at Emma seriously…

"Thank you for your concern," she said softly, "As I said, I really don't think I want power for the sake of it. And I like most of my team-mates…" She paused for a second while trying to find the right words. "They're almost like a family to me, and I really want what's best for all of them… us. But I can't help but feel that no one could do it as good as I could. They just don't have the drive. I'm… better."
She looked a bit guilty saying that. After another pause, she continued:
"I might be wrong on this…"
She had to force the words out.

"Also… I meant I was sorry about your parents being that way in the first place."

«Nicolette should talk to Wildfire at some point. When's the best in-story time? The night after her conversation with Kelly?»

"Ah, I see." Emma pauses and glances off to the side, knocking down a few memories that rose to the surface. "At any rate, the relationship with my parents is in the past, and in the past it will stay." For a moment, Emma's face seems to break its solemnity, imitate an emotion close to sadness…but it doesn't last. "I'd give you a speech about how everyone is equal and how you're no better than anyone else, but I am trying to cut back on my hypocrisy these days."

She stands, smiling gently. "My advice would be for you take an honest look at yourself and your abilities and see how they compare with the others. There's nothing wrong with feeling superior…to an extent. Simply don't let the feeling dominate."

[I'll set up something for Wildfire soon.]

Nicolette remained seated, but kept her gaze up.
"I'll do my best, Ms. Frost," she said, "In everything. Thank you…"

"As I told Kelly, dear." Emma starts to walk away; nodding, the glimmer of a smile on her face. "That's all I'll ever ask of you."
