The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Cover Art: The Hellions, all of them huddled together in a dark forest. Hundreds of beady red eyes peer out from the darkness.
$3.50

The Hellions visit Avengers Mansion to pick up their custom made bus and schmooze with Tony Stark - but, unfortunately, there are some uninvited guests. About a million of them.

Penciled by: Chris Griffin

Coming…tonight!

[Note: I rather liked your setup, Amy, so I thought I'd give it a try. Hope you don't mind. <_<]

In a plane flying off the United States’ East Coast…

Latveria hated her job almost as much as she hated her name. And she royally despised her name.

Of course, her parents hadn’t named her that originally - there were loyal to the nation, but she’d been initially named Natasha. No, no, she’d changed her name in order to impress Doom and better secure her position as one of his secretaries. As if her long and extensive resume wasn’t enough.

He wasn’t impressed by the name. There was no indication that he even noticed it. And he was barely impressed enough with the resume to hire her.

It didn’t instill confidence.

As she sat in his private plane, sitting in his private office while reading the private details of their private visit to the United States, the not-so-private rumors of what happened to his past secretaries kept echoing through her mind - the exuberant salary was worth the risk, she’d decided, but it wasn’t a light decision. She had to be wary of every word said to him. Like now.

“Our people are waiting to receive you at the airport.” She laid the papers out on his table before him, taking care for order. Order was very important. “Captain America is unavailable to escort you because of Avenger’s business, but you’ll be provided with a considerable escort nonetheless. Once there, we have a few hotels that are ready to receive you, though I believe you’ll find that-”

“My dear.” He interrupted her with a wave of his hand and a word. As usual. “Do you believe me incapable of making my own decisions?”

She came back quick. “No sir! I was merely-”

“Enough.” Another wave of the hand. “Tell me of our missions status…tell me of our targets.”

[All right, that's the prelude. Check in, and we'll get things started.]

890 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York City. Avengers Mansion.

The group departs from a local bus and finds themselves standing in front of history personified; the Mansion stands before them, huge and imposing, and entire city block all its. Three stories above and three stories below, a well-kempt garden decorating the front, an ornate gate surrounding that, and Tony Stark standing at the entrance. “Welcome.”

“Good day, Tony.” She walks in front of the group, exchanging glances with Tony - rather lecherous glances, really, though it seems more like the flames of what was than what is. “I trust everything is in order?”

“We’re ready to receive you.” He claps his hands, and the gate swings wide open. “Of course, I’ll be giving you all a little more than the regular tour - usually, we only bring guests on the top three floors, but I think I’ll let everyone see the underground this time. By the time we’re done with that, Jarvis should have dinner ready. We eat, we talk, we discuss, and you’re off on the bus. Sound good?”

Emma nods and Tony walks, leading them in.

Blind floats along silently. Though his head barely moves, he would seem to be taking in everything in a rather large hurry.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 8, 2007, 11:36pm

Tony catches a peek at Jay as they walk in, and does a double-take. "Jay Livingston, right?" He smiles, halfway to the entrance now. "I knew your parents - we've floated apart in the past few years, but I remember you back when you still wore diapers. Thought your name was familiar, but it just clicked right now."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 8, 2007, 11:38pm

Blind, with his abilities, notices nothing particularly odd going on. However, he senses that there seems to be an abundance of life in the trees - most particularly squirrels. Much more than usual.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury

Torrance looks around. She's wearing somewhat dressy attire, for her, and is honestly impressed with the Avengers Mansion.

"So, you actually have a butler. We didn't have a butler."

She looks at Jay. "They have a butler."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Eddie "Zoo" Scott on Mar 8, 2007, 11:44pm

"Yes, they do. I've never seen an actual butler before."

I've been told I don't do sarcasm well. I still have to make the effort.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 8, 2007, 11:45pm

Tony nods Torrance's way, holding the door open for everyone to enter. "That would be Jarvis - he's our butler, but he's much more than just that. He's a good friend and a good man, and he's always helping out in his own way. Pretty much a member of the team."

The team enters, and everything is as grand as you'd expect - floors so clean you see the reflection, the smell of a five-star dinner wafting their way, the finest furniture money can buy. "Now, I can start by taking you around the top floors…but, really, that's nothing. The real interesting stuff is below. We have time, though, so whichever way you want is fine."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Alkaline on Mar 8, 2007, 11:48pm

Taking a pull from her flask, she lets out a dry laugh. "Ha, let's find Dan's old bedroom. No, better, let's go look at all the vintage Avengers attire."

Looking at Jay again, she asks, "I wonder if they have a gift shop like Freedoms Plaza does. That place is always a killer. I need a new night -shirt, and a Wasp one would be rockin'."

"Wasp would probably give you an autographed shirt if she was around, but the rest of the Avengers are overseas at the moment, finishing up some trouble there." He walks over to the elevator and types in a few commands, ushering them inside the moment it opens. "Now, if its suits you want to see, I keep all my old models down here. Same with the others - "

Before Tony can continue bragging, there's a crash from the kitchen; pots falling, dishes breaking, Jarvis screaming. A squirrel runs out the next moment and Jarvis follows in hot pursuit; frying pan in hand and an uncharacteristic scowl on his face…he doesn't get too far in the chase before fatigue sets in, though.

"Jarvis!" Tony helps him stand straight, letting Jarvis lean on his shoulder. "Another one got in?"

"Yes, the furry devil slipped in when you opened the door a few moments ago." Jarvis pants, knees wobbly. "The fifteenth one this week, if my count is correct."

"So, do we get to meet all the Avengers or are they out fighting Loki or something?"

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 9, 2007, 12:09am

Tony ignores Ixnay's comment, but he's obviously embarrased by that little incident - or perhaps its the excessive talk of balls. Take your pick. He turns to Will instead. "Like I said, the other Avengers are off overseas. I would've joined them, but I had a run-in with the Mandarin. By the time I got free, it was mostly over. I had some work to do here, anyway, so I thought it would be best to hang back."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury

The squirrel leaps off Torrance and grabs onto Jay's face, messing around in hair a moment and leaping off again - Jay might want to make sure that no 'presents were left.

It then leaps onto Emma. It doesn't stay long, but it runs across her ridiculously exposed chest area. That insult would prove to be his last.

Emma watches the squirrel scurrying about, looking more and more irritated by the second. “Really, Tony, I’d think you could handle a simple pest problem.” She starts to focus. “I suppose I might as well lend my services while I’m-”

It doesn’t work.

Emma’s face contorts as she puts more and more effort into tapping into the squirrel’s mind - she seemed more annoyed than anything, but shutting down a rodent’s mind is taking much longer than one would think. After a few moments, the squirrels falls, unconscious, leaving Emma bewildered. “Tony…you’ve attracted a rather odd squirrel, here. Not only was it surprisingly adept at resisting telepathy, it also seemed to be thinking homicidal and perverse thoughts about us all.”

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Eddie "Zoo" Scott on Mar 9, 2007, 12:22am

I brush off my hair.

"No offense, Ms. Frost, but I can't really imagine many things that wouldn't think perverse thoughts about you. Don't you sort of foster that image?"

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 9, 2007, 12:23am

Tony looks at with wide eyes…he doesn't answer his question, but the looks seem to say 'Hell no, I don't eat squirrels, you weirdo'.

"Your guess is as good as mine." He shrugs. "They've been a problem for a few weeks now. Not harmful, just annoying."

And, as if on cue, the power shuts down. Lights go off, the air conditioning stops conditioning. The elevator seems to still be running, though.

"Yeah, I think it was trying to unclasp my bra."

Torrance adjusts herself, wiping the squirrel hair off of her shirt. Since being around Emma, she's tried to give herself a classier look.

She looks at Cadmus. "Most guys don't have many thoughts beside 'burying nuts'."

A feeling of self loathing creeps into Will due to his "nuts" pun.

«I've eaten squirrels. They're not bad.»

I pretty much expected that reaction from Frost, so I shut up. Well, almost.

"I'll consider that just a teensy bit of payback for what happened the first time we met."

Then, I look around as much as I can. No emergency lights? What kind of lame superhero base is this?

"No one's going down ANY hole."

The voice that answers Torrance sounds something like a Teletubby that's been to Hell and got possessed by a demon. High-pitched, but scratchy; sugar sweet, but malevolent. The group sees the source, too, as a pair of beady eyes starts to creep down the wall before them. "It's been a long time, Tony."

Tony steps forward. "Have we met?"

"You forgot me?" She drops to the floor making much more of a shake then you'd expect from someone her size. "But…but how? Why? I was your sidekick, Tony!"

"…I ask again: Who are you? I've never had a sidekick."

"And I remember telling you not to sneak into the mansion like this, because what we do here is very important."

"Uh-huh."

"Yet…here you are."

"I'm not here for games, Stark!" She leaps back and hits Tony with her tail, launching him into the air and making him land hard. He's fine, but hurting. "I'm here to teach you a lesson! And I'll teach you X-Punks a lesson for hurting my Jimmy Bo, too!" She points to the unconscious squirrel.

Squirrel Girl moves fast. Incredibly fast.

Before Torrance's wave even comes close to hitting, she darts around the room with a speed that would even have Spider-Man reeling, and wraps her tail around Torrance's neck. Despite the armor, she still manages to crush through, too, and threatens to snap her neck - she's obscenely strong.

Blind's trick disorients Squirrel Woman enough to make her let go of Torrance, but she recuperates quickly - what self-respecting squirrel has a problem with balance?

She goes on all fours and starts clicking her teeth, and the pitter-patter of hundreds of little feet can be heard outside…and it gets louder by the moment.

Squirrel Girl jumps on Cadmus and starts to bite away; he teeth are strong enough to put sizable dents in his armor, and when she bites flesh - PAIN. Not only that, but she keeps scurrying over him, staying just out of his reach.

Squirrel Woman answers Will by lashing out with her tails and wrapping it around his arm. Not only is she still scurrying and biting all over Cadmus, but she's dragging Will with her, too.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Siamko "Blind" Vasiliev on Mar 9, 2007, 1:00am

Blind attempts to shut down Squirrel Girl's vision, while speaking directly into her ear and cutting off all other sound.

"Ms…..Woman. I'm sorry, you never gave us a real name…..if you seek respect, you have gained it. But further battle avails us nothing."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 9, 2007, 1:00am

Squirrel Woman leaps away at the last moment before Cadmus hits the wall, bringing Will in the air with her. She uses Will as weapon, tossing him hard into Cadmus' chest - hurts Will more than Cadmus, of course, but still very mean spirited of her.

"Emma…" Tony stands up, leaning against the wall. "Can't you just-"

"Believe me, I've been trying. She's blocking my probes somehow - her mind is so hard to grasp, it's uncanny." Emma looks to the still-opened elevator. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but…Hellions, retreat! She's too tough for us!"

As Emma says this, hundreds of beady eyes start looking in from the windows…not coming in yet. Not yet.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Alkaline on Mar 9, 2007, 1:03am

"Now hold on, this is not some species that was obliterated by deforestation, or the building of a dam. Squirrels, uh, had their shot, and nature selected them for doggie chew toys."

Torrance drops her armor, leaving just a chitinous gauntlet over her left arm. "Where do we retreat? Downstairs?"

I'll get into the elevator.

"On the plus side, she seems invulnerable to our two best anti-superhuman weapons, me and Emma, so we can still get some self-respect out of beating her. On the minus side, we're getting owned by squirrels."

«Going to bed. Not that Ixnay has anything useful to contribute from here on in anyway.»

Torrance's hounds reach the glass and start to bark at it, and the squirrels outside are quite shaken by it - the glass starts to break. "Damn," Tony shakes his head. "It's supposed to unbreakable…I'm going to need a refund on that."

Emma ignores his plight and turns to Torrance. "Yes, inside. The lower levels work on a different power source, we should be able to hole up down-"

"You're not going anywhere!" Squirrel Woman charges Torrance's way.

[Oh, right.]

Torrance and Blind both make it inside and the doors shut behind them. Two things are heard behind the titanium doors: The sounds of thousand and thousands of teeth gnashing on metal, and the sound of Jarvis laughing uncontrollably. It's probably best they can't see what's happening to him.

[Now you're just being mean, Amy.]

Emma, having never seen Aliens because she's not cool enough or something, doesn't get Torrance's reference. Instead, she turns to Tony. "Any ideas?"

"Honestly, I was thinking about suiting up and just blasting them all away, but…that could take a while." The elevator stops after another moment, opening up to the Avengers' warroom - dozens of screens, and monitors, and they're all flashing red. It seems this 'squirrel' thing isn't just an Avengers' problem; it's happening across the whole city. The police are swamped. Stores are burning. There's even a rather amusing shot of Spider-Man dragging a web-net filled with hundreds of the little bastards.

The outdoor PA system activates, linking Dr. Doom and Squirrel Woman with everyone inside, and letting Tony starts negotiations. "What are you doing here, Doom?"

"My reason for being here?" Doom shakes his fist impotently. "I am here to right a most grievous wrong, Tony Stark. Did you really think you would be rid of me? That I would be contained so easily? I escaped your paltry bonds, Stark, and no I am here to heap my vengeance upon you."

After going over the situation thoroughly, Tony leaves the room and comes back fully suited up; his Iron Man suit looking as solid and sturdy as ever. "Haven't had time to check the systems, but I should be good to go. Everyone understand the plan?"

The 'plan' is quite simple - distraction. Iron Man intends to go out first through the quinjet exit, causing some big noise and drawing most of the squirrels after him. While they're busy chasing him around, the rest of the group can come out and engage Squirrel Girl and Dr. Doom - oddly, Iron Man isn't nearly as concerned about the latter villain as one would think. Seems he knows something.

"I can take about a thousand or so squirrels nibbling away at me, I don't think any of you can. Just focus on Squirrel 'Woman' and pay Doom less mind."

He looks Emma way and they exchange glances and a slight smirk.

[Thought about it a little, and DC came up with the suggestion to make this a sort of continuous thing - basically , post whenever you're on, day or night.]

Iron Man thinks for a second, then goes over to a compartment and brings back what can best be described a really shiny rifle. "Here, this a little something from my early day…for all intents and purposes, it's a long-range taser. It fires electrical shots, and it' s meant to stun. It should make the squirrels give you some space."

Iron Man seems a bit hesitant to hand a weapon off to a guy who won't even open his eyes, but a memory sinks in after a moment - this is Blind. Emma did mention his powers during their talk…he hands Blind one of the guns.

[Alright, let's see…]

Once the team's properly readied, Iron Man ushers the team to quinjet launching bay. Emma decided to hang back in the control room, where it's nice and man-eating squirrel-free, but she does help out by keeping the group in constant telepathic communication with each other.

Iron Man looks around, makes sure everyone's in position, and opens the door, blasting out at a fair speed…slow and low enough that the thousands and thousands of squirrels that give chase don't have a problem keeping up.

"I think the answer would be me."

Before Jay knows it, a fluffy tail whips him hard in the face, as Squirrel Woman rushes over with lightning speed. "Let me guess - Iron Man wanted you kids to deal with me? He still underestimates me…he's always underestimating me!"

Will sneaks out to where Doom is, hoping to catch him off guard.

Why do I feel like I'm already dead?

Will takes aim, tries to steady his hand, and fires.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 11, 2007, 2:27am

[Gah, sorry. I'm really not good at dividing my attention like this. Forgive.]

Squirrel Woman moves fast enough to dodge Ixnay's shots even at such close range; she weaves through, snakes out her tail and wraps it around his body, trapping his arms against his sides and crushing him.

Oddly enough, William DOES manage to catch Dr. Doom off-guard. He falls over and lies on the ground, as sparks start to crackle from his body.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury

Dr. Doom is making quite a lot of noise, William notices - almost like a machine gone haywire. "I…I am…how dare you, dare you, d-d-d-d-are you strike Dr…Doom Doom Doom…"

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by William "Wraithling" Weaver on Mar 11, 2007, 3:01am

Will inches forward to inspect the body. He sees a lot of exposed wiring and machinery. Sparks continue shooting out of it.

"Iron man, you'd probably know, is Dr. Doom a robot?"

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 11, 2007, 3:15am

"Well, usually no, but he swaps out with his Doombots whenever it's convenient for him." Iron Man seems more amused than surprised, and the reason comes next. "Emma and I had a strong feeling that's what it was, but she wanted to keep it a secret - felt you'd take things more seriously. If I don't miss my guess, that particular Doombot is my property…it's complex. I'll explain it all when this pans out."

Squirrel Woman seems to be immune to Jay's sex appeal, and continues to crush him. Bones are starting to break…

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Alkaline on Mar 11, 2007, 4:12am

Torrance bum rushes Squirrel Girl and slashes at her back with her Darkblade gauntlet.

She's got her trademark Darkforce Ghul minion running interference for her.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 11, 2007, 4:18am

Torrance manages to get first blood on Squirrel Woman, and the furious furry fighter drops Ixnay out of shock. She's quick to retaliate, though, and knocks away Torment's ghul with a lightning strike of the tail. She goes on the offensive, leaping in the air, reach in her nutsack, and throwing a handful of nuts at Torment - or, at least, they look like nuts. As Torment finds out when the first one lands at her feet, each nut makes a little explosion when it hits…and a lot of those little nuts are heading for her.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Alkaline on Mar 11, 2007, 4:28am

Torrance lets the gauntlet flow over her, becoming her full body armor, and makes a rolling dive.

She sends forth a flock of Darkling crows as a last ditch effort, hoping they'll take the damage instead, since that's the best she can hope for.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by William "Wraithling" Weaver on Mar 11, 2007, 4:33am

Will doesn't get a response and heads back to the hanger. He arrives just in time to see Torrance get attacked.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 11, 2007, 8:17am

The Darkforce crows manage to take the damage splendidly; they even manage to push on, rushing past Squirrel Woman in the air. She lets out a shriek and barely manages to land on all fours - but she's still looking as confident as ever.

The reason why is revealed in the next moment, as squirrels start to work their way over the wall and leap at the Hellions. It's nowhere near the massive amount that tore after Iron Man, but it's still enough to be a major nuisance - dozens of them.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Siamko "Blind" Vasiliev on Mar 11, 2007, 10:15am

Remaining invisible, Blind takes focus and begins plinking at the squirrels. As he does, he moves around so they would not be able to trace his shots easily.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 11, 2007, 2:57pm

Blind is successful with his squirrel sniping, but the squirrels aren't stupid - he can hear them chittering back and forth, squeaking, and it almost sounds like they're coming up with some sort of plan.

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by The Sacred Digits on Mar 11, 2007, 8:27pm

Ixnay

Time to take another tack.

I throw down the gun.

"You're right, Squirrel Woman. It is senseless to resist you. Your powers and abilities place you far above our level."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 11, 2007, 8:47pm

"You're damn straight they are!" Squirrel Woman doesn't seem to swayed by Ixnay's charm, but she hasn't ripped him in two yet - that's a good sign. "I've trained long and hard for this, but people never understand how strong I am! They don't see the power of my nuts! Squirrels are the dominant species on this planet; there's nowhere we can't go, nothing we can't do, WE ARE LEGION!"

Ixnay

"I think I speak for all of us when I say we should have listened to you before, and are more than prepared to listen to you now. And help, if we can. You know what happens to people who owe Doom favors. He's not the only person you can go to. Tell us whatever's on your mind."

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 12, 2007, 8:40pm

"Robot?" She looks at Will, bearing a quizzical look. "There's no robot here…he's the real thing." She turns back to Ixnay and Torrance, breath hurried, eyes widened. "Well, I just want respect! I want in the big leagues. I can't get on any superhero teams; they just laugh at me and don't give me a chance." She kicks an acorn away, looking dejected. "Hey…could I join you guys' team?"

Squirrel Woman lights up at Torrance's approval, rushing over to her and embracing her in a bear hug…that almost makes Torrance feel like a bear is hugging her. "Thankyouthankyouthankyou!" She swings Torrance around, ecstatic. "I promise, it'll be the most awesome thing ever! We'll hang out, we'll save people, we'll beat up bad guys - you won't regret it, I swear!"

Re: The Hellions #5 - Furry Fury

Squirrel stops squeezing the life out of Torrance and backs off, thinking for a moment. Remembering, remembering, and… "Oh, yeah. Right." She turns to the horde of squirrels looks down on them, all of whom seem a bit less ravenous than they were minutes ago. "Hey, guys! We worked everything out, you can call off the seige, now! Go tell everybody!"

The squirrels nod in unison and leap off, spreading across the city to tell the news from their mistress.

[As a self-proclaimed geek, it is my duty to notice that you have 1,337 posts, and consider that to be cool for some odd reason.]

Alright, the basic wrap-up.

The squirrels scatter once they learn the news, as squirrels are wont to do. Some of them get run over by cars, but such is the life of a squirrel.

Emma's rather grudging about bringing Squirrel Girl along, but the threat of another squirrel invasion is enough incentive, and she accepts, under the condition that she drops the silly 'Squirrel Woman' tag.

The group gets their bus, Iron Man says a few farewells and gives encouragement, and they're off to the wide, wide world. First stop: New Jersey.
