Hellions / Gargoyles #1 - Children of the Night
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 13, 2007, 12:11pm

Hellions / Gargoyles #1
4.99 (Triple-Sized; 64 pages, no ads)

1000 years ago, superstition and the sword ruled.
It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear.
It was the age of Gargoyles.

Stone by day.

Warriors by night.

We were betrayed by the humans we had sword to protect.
Frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years.
But now, here, in Manhattan
The spell is broken!

AND WE LIVE AGAIN!

We are defenders of the night
We are Gargoyles!

That’s right, True Believers. Not clones. Not stand-ins. The Gargoyle crew is coming to the Marvel Universe, full canon, and they’re coming in style; pitted against each other by Demona’s dark machinations, with none other than Daredevil fighting at their side! Can the two groups reach a common understanding? And for what dark plan does Demona seek the Nidorum? Will the Hellions be able to exorcise the demon within them, when all is said and done?

Find out!

I can't say when, exactly, since this is my first day on the job - starting at 4:20, and I'm only supposed to work six or so hours, but you know how it is…could be more, could be less. I shouldn't be getting on any later than midnight, though, so just keep an eye open.]

After dropping Jenny off at the mansion and picking up the wayward Hellion Masstress, the team headed to Nightstone Unlimited immediately - obviously, in a bit of hurry to get the demon on their souls exorcised. As arranged, Maria was there waiting for them and lead them to the top floor, gathering right outside Dominique Destine's office.

"Ms. Destine is currently in the middle of a call with one of our contractors. She'll call you in to speak momentarily." She bows to the group, then heads into Dominique's office, quickly closing the door behind.

The team enters and finds themselves in the middle of what seems to be a cross between a museum and a business office. Ancient weapons line the walls, lying beside ancient paintings, lying in front of ancient texts in glass cases. It’s rustic all the way, and there’s a great view of the city and the setting sun.

In the midst of it all, Dominique sits at her chair, nodding to the Hellions as they enter.

“Greetings, mutants.” She points to the chairs all about the room. “Sit, please. We’ve much to discuss.”

Noir, still in her Devil May Cry outfit, shakes her head sardonically at Kee'an, and smiles awkwardly at Will.

She's still toying with the newly purchased pack of cigarettes in her inside pocket. Stupid guilt trip.

[By the way, two things before we get deep - 1, I'm trying to be a bit more image heavy with this mission. I understand not everyone is familiar with the show, so I hope the images will make remembering things a little easier. 2, I apologize if I get some of the Gargoyles mixed up. I love the show, but I always had trouble with their names. Being fair, it would've helped if three of the Gargoyles didn't have names that started with 'Br'.]

Emma responds to William. "I've already taken the liberty…she's clean, oddly enough."

Dominique snickers at William's comment, but moves on. "As Maria has no doubt told you, I require your unique services in finding the Nidorum." She holds up a picture of what seems to be a rather large and decadent crystal eyeball. "It's an ancient artifact, which belonged to…" She looks Shaman's way. "I won't bore you with the details. I basically need you to go to the top of a clocktower and retrieve it for me. I'd do it myself, but the clocktower happens to be on top of a police station - too much of a hassle. Though, for ones with your skills…"

Shaman returns her look, fascinated by the woman. There's something about her that he just can't take his mind off of and it's coming across as if he's blatantly checking her out.

"Sounds…interesting. But I must ask, would you be at all opposed to me verifying your honesty for myself?"

He retracts his TK field over his right arm and reaches his hand out, palm up. The truth is he's hoping to figure out what about her is causing his interest.

Without looking at him, Jesse removes mass from one of the legs Kee'an is leaning back on… And before it snaps beneath his weight, she quickly puts it back out of respect for Emma. She looks at Dominique:

"So lady, when what's this little thing do anyway? Nuke cities, eat babies, all kinda illegal fun?"

Dominique stares rather hard at Kee'an - one might get the feeling she's not used to be ignored.

"The Nidorum is something of a magical enhancer. On its own, in the hands of a regular human, it's quite useless." She smiles, much wider than before. "But then, I'm no regular human. I have some experience in magic…enough to help you all with your problem. And I'll be able to sell it for quite a bit, too."

She turns to Shama, extending her hand and placing it in Shaman's. "Look away."

More than anything, there's a searing hate for this woman in Dominique's mind.

Will hopes no one notices that that was actually two questions. He glances over at Shaman with a snear before returning his gaze to Dominique.

"Oh, and you may want to wash your hand to get the stench of failure off of you."

Shaman releases his grip slowly, still hoping to probe for more information.

"Hatred unbefitting of a beauty such as yourself."

Shaman looks at her for another minute before shaking it off.

"She's on the level."

He chooses to keep the vision of the woman to himself until they are out of the building, figuring it to be something she wouldn't provide true insight on.

"Once the Queen is expelled, I'll use the Nidorum to remove the curse on her, at which point her soul will fade. And go to Heaven. Or be reincarnated. Whatever you believe in." She looks out the window, a slight grimace on her face as the sun begins setting. "I don't mean to sound rude, but if there are no other questions, I have to excuse myself now…there's a pressing engagement that needs my attention. Maria will give you the instructions to the police station."

The Hellions make their way to the police station and easily get up to the Clock tower - Emma simply works her mind magic, and no one even notices them.

Once inside the Clocktower, they notice the place seems oddly lived in - there’s a TV, some furniture, a few snack foods lying about. More noticeable, however, are the stone statues lying about; gargoyles, but instead of standing on the outside of the building like they should, they all seem to be in positions that would suggest they were talking to each other and conversing.

A billy club shoots out from the shadows of the clocktower and strikes Cadmus straight in the head, clanging off his helmet. It ricochets away at a nearly impossible angle, bouncing from wall to wall, rising hire and hire until it lands back in its owner's hands.

"Tell me who you and why you're here. Now."

"Dominique Destine, huh?" The group turns around as a woman enters the clocktower, the same one Shaman saw in Dominique's mind. "If that's the case, I think we'll be showing you the door."

"Agreed." Daredevil breaks into his ready stance. "I'll bet Goliath is going to have a similar sentiment."

The sun sets. The clocktower darkens. It happens.

The stone statues begin to break and crack apart, peeling away and revealing the true monsters within. The clocktower is filled with the bellows of these beasts as stone goes flying; their white eye shines in the dark, their wings spread wide like waking bats.

These creatures are just as startled to see the Hellions as they likely are to see them, and the biggest one looks toward Daredevil. "More of Demona's puppets, just like last week Goliath." He points his billy club their way. "Care to show them the way out."

"Yes." Goliath's wings span out, his eyes glowing even brighter than before. "I think we will."

Shaman's field protected him from most of the shot, but it still hurt like a bitch. He's grounded with his field only barely up.

"Destine…."

He manages to say, he's furious, he's been used…again.

"I should have felt it…."

He gestures his hand, trying to use any power he can muster to crush the gun in her hands, praying to Mother that he has enough.

Demona sees Shaman's attack coming and gives him another blast…they're not lethal, but they wreck havoc on his nervous system. "Don't be so hard on yourself. Even the great Emma Frost couldn't detect me, after all - though not for lack of trying." She looks Emma's way and smiles. Emma's giving her the finger. "I've been alive for hundreds of years. I know how to handle telepaths."

She walks over to Goliath and pries the Nidorum from his fingers. "A gift, my love? You shouldn't have."

"Demona, you-"

She stomps him in the face, silencing him.

Demona sees Cadmus getting up and decides now might be a good time for the exit. "I'd thank you, Hellions, but really it's you who should be thanking me. Right here, right now, you're witnessing the birth of a glorious new future. The age of Gargoyles begins today…but don't be afraid. The humans will pass away, but the mutants will have their place. The Hellions and the Gargoyles make their way to Nightstone Unlimited HQ, which is looking a lot more…say, demonic, than when they last arrived there. For starts, there's a rather dark cloud hanging around the top of the building; lightning crackling, wind blowing, the hole deal - but the rest of the city's clear. Add the garish green glow emanating from the windows, and you have a rather creepy place.

"We tried entering from the top." Goliath touches down, with the other gargoyles in tow. "There's some sort of barrier blocking us from the higher levels…it would seem Demona has a path for us to follow."

There are too few of us alive; if she ever wants to achieve her dream of a world ruled by gargoyles, she needs as many as she can get. She likely just wants us present for whatever she has planned, but she doesn't want us to reach her too fast."

Goliath coughs and speaks up. "Even in my time, Demona was a skilled warrior. She's been alive for over a thousand years, and her abilities have only grown exponentially in that time - it's no small word to say that she's the strongest gargoyle alive. All areas accounted for."

They enter the lobby area, which is oddly still and peaceful - save for the elevator muzak playing on the speaker. "Girl from Ipanema, as it so happens."

Broadway starts humming, but the other gargoyles tell him to shush. "Sorry. It's a good song."

Before anyone can critique Broadway's taste in music, they come across Elisa - bruised and battered, her clothes shredded, dangling from the cieling on a chain. Goliath roars and runs to her, but he goes straight through - only an illusion.

Demona's cackle bellows throughout the room. "So you all finally made it. Apologies for roughing up your favorite human, Goliath, but I was starting to grow bored."

Before the Hellions can proceed any further, Demona starts chanting some spell, speaking in a bunch of Latin words that I would've written if the only person I know who writes Latin wasn't such an egomaniac.

Before them, a green light starts to materialize, bringing forth an ancient creature before them - the Minotaur. Standing twice as tall as Goliath with the muscles to match, he charges head on in the Gargoyles, knocking them all aside.

The monster runs straight into a wall with Blind's help - and crashes straight through. He's unfazed, though, and starts to get up, only to have Torrance and Shaman weigh him down again.

The Gargoyles regroup quickly and jump on the massive Minotaur, trying their best to drag him with strength in numbers. It doesn't seem to be working."

Shaman piles on the pressure, trying to focus on individual spots of the legs in hopes of maybe snapping a bone and keeping him grounded. Not his preferred method, but it's too big to take the peaceful option.

The Gargoyles are thrown away in one mighty heave as the Minotaur rears up and lets loose a deafening roar. He shrieks as Cadmus cuts into his legs, then batters Cadmus away with Hulk-like strength, sending clear into the next room, which just so happens to be the gift shop.

Jesse's attack seems to slow him down a bit, and he feels his horns, confused.

The Minotaur is just…overwhelmed by the onslaught, and falls down on his back. He starts to rise halfheartedly, but Goliath, eyes glowing white, grabs him by the horn, lifts him up and hurls him in the nearest wall, smashing clean through. The beast vaporizes, disappearing into the same greeen mist it came from.

He falls to one knee from the exhaustion, but Brooklyn helps him. "It would seem Demona seeks to slow us by conjuring mythical beasts."

Brooklyn chuckles a bit. "Ya think?"

Meanwhile William finds a pair of elevators not too far away, but they're nowhere near big enough to hold the whole crew. There are some stairs right next to it, though.

There's an odd pulse around them, as if the building has a beating heart. Strong. Steady. Growing louder with every step upwards they take. The higher they go, the more the building seems to change. The walls take on a fleshy, corrupted appearance, like they're rising up the throat of some great beast. The air grows thick. The sand grows more plentiful. The beating grows more consistent, and a rush of air passes them with every beat.

At Will's words, the sand rises and takes shape, moving on a will of its own. It solidifies, and the Gargoyles find themselves face to face with a dozen beings of sand, all crafted in Demona's image, all smiling wickedly.

"Enjoying the show Goliath?" The sand Demona's speak as one. "This is just a fraction of the power I wield now - the Nidorum has made me like a goddess. Once I've mastered it, even the Sorcerer Supreme will be humbled - but I'm merciful. I'll give you one last chance to surrender, and save yourself undo pain. We can do this the hard way or the easy-"

Re: Hellions / Gargoyles #1 - Children of the Nigh
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 19, 2007, 1:06am

Valerie makes it daytime, alright, but that doesn't do anything to anyone. Allow me to explain.

Gargoyles turn stone (and go human, in Demona's case) because of biological clocks. Even without the presence of sunlight, a gargoyle will always turns to stone and wake up at a certain time. Their bodies absorb solar radiation during the day, which gives them enough strength to glide at night. So making the sun rise early doesn't affect.

Sorry. I did a lot of research for this mission.

Demona speaks a few more words for the book, and the spell is canceled out, not doing a single thing - though she does seem a bit irritated by the staff's presence, now.

Re: Hellions / Gargoyles #1 - Children of the Nigh

The tail end of that comment is totally for Will's benefit. I charge her, figuring that somebody has to pick up the 'doing stupid stuff' slack with Kee'an being so quiet. Typical slice and dice strategy is in effect, except that I'm going for the spell book instead of Demona herself.

"I should have known - you mutants always have a few surprises, don't you? Well, I have my own, too. Even without the book, the Nidorum still grants me unparalleled foresight…watch."

She goes on the attack in the next moment, charging with uncanny speed. She weaves around Noir and her Fel Hunter, pushes path Goliath, and pounces on top of Valerie, knocking her down and slashing wildly.

Shaman manages to pull her off Valerie and Broadway helps - but Demona lifts him and tosses him away, then weaves around Shaman's TK, impossibly loosing herself.

And she takes the Staff with her.

"That's one annoyance dealt with." She breaks the Staff in two with one squeeze of her, then hits Valerie in the face with the bottom end.

Blind manages to Blind Demona, but she still folds her wing and dodges Noir's attack with frightening ease - the Nidorum gives her a sixth sense, it seems.

She back peddles and sweeps around behind Noir grabbing her in a bearhug and squeezing tight enough to nearly break her armor - but she lets Noir go and then leaps to the side, letting Noir take Shaman's TK blast instead. She goes flying, hammered hard into the nearest wall.

Meanwhile, Will doesn't find much more than the typical office supplies, really. The string holding Elisa is tied down with a bolt on the floor, and there is the spell book…

If I'm going to be honest with myself, I completely saw that coming. Yet I did it anyway.

The impact isn't as bad as it could be, between the extra mass Jesse gave me and the mass she took away from the desk mid flight. Still knocks me for a little bit of a loop. When I've got my bearings again I note that Torrence is down.

Oh yeah, things are going just fucking peachy.

I pick her up and remove her from the immediate carnage, placing her just outside the office to recouperate.

Demona ignores Blind's illusions and deftly avoids the bullets, launching forward and slapping him in the chest with her tail.

Meanwhile - though it's not apparent whether the Queen can hear him or not - Will manages to make some pretty flowers grow out of the floor. As he reads, though, the words seem to change, becomes plain English on the page. It's more or less a spell encyclopedia, Will finds - just about a spell for anything he could want.

Demona pulls her tail out of Blind's reach and grabs him by the throat, pushing him into a nearby wall and squeezing the life out of him. She's enjoyed it, too, but Will's spell kicks into effect - Demona freezes. Or at least slows down considerably.

"What…is…this?"

Noir comes to, her shoulder out of joint. She bites her lip hard to take the pain, and drags herself along the floor to get a better vantage of the battle.

She generates a Darkforce lance in mid-air, and sends it speeding towards Demona's middle.

Re: Hellions / Gargoyles #1 - Children of the Nigh

The lance pierces Demona's stomach just as she regenerates her eye, and while it doesn't kill her, Demona's unable to pull it out."Blasted mutants!"

Meanwhile, as Jesse reaches for the Nidorum, another hand beats her to it - namely, Maria's, Dominique's assistant. "About time you guys defeated her." She tosses the Nidorum from hand to hand.

"Well, since you asked so nicely, sure." He holds the Nidorum up. "As you've already seen the Nidorum is quite a dandy in the magic department, and when I heard Demona was coming close to getting it, well, I couldn't let that happen. After all, I like it here; as a wise man once said: You can't blow up the Earth, it's where I keep all my stuff!"
