I looked back at Rapt, visibly confused.

"N-no… I don't want to… Kidd's here…" My gaze shifted to Wild. "Kidd's here, Wild! I told you! She's here! Why are you-? Come here!"

The blast of energy blew me away, and I looked back at the stage, hurt, but not particularly in the physical sense.

Rapt moves next to Wildfire and Masstress, whispering.

"Wild, how many bullets do you have?"

[We can talk, but no more action until tomorrow.]

I sigh as Kelly goes flying back, wishing I was in a position to help her. "Kelly, you are my friend and I love you, but if you don't get your head together, I'm getting to hit you over the head with this minigun." I keep my aim focused on Kidd. "That's not her. The dead don't come back. No one here is falling for this but you, so get a hold of yourself."

It's a harsh thing to say, and I can't blame her - Kelly was closer to Kidd than all of us. But now is not the time.

"Wild, I need a few bullets. And…I never got your name, sorry, if you can lighten them a lot I can propel them, then you add weight to them, and Wild's. Depending on how heavy you can make them…"

They have been. They arenas are sort of shielded from the Darkforce's nastier effects, though going outside the boundaries has a harsh penalty - as Blob found out. Torrance and Meghan - and maybe Kelly, too, since her powers have been shown to negate Darkforce in the past - are the only ones who could hope to survive outside those set boundaries.

1. What's up with Kelly's new powers? I thought she was just an energy projector? Now she's able to copy Kidds powers in mourning of her?
2. How is Almond able to make force fields?
3. Speaking of "Kidd's powers"……right before I disappearred…Kidd was an energy manipulator pretending to be a childlike Hulk-like creature…what ended up with the Hulk thing being dropped…and how was she killed?
4. What was this intense convo between Erebus and Kelly that everyone keeps referring to.
5. Where is Nexus? (actually lasty already talked to me about this…but I still think it would have been kick ass for him to toss his hat in the ring…especially now that Torment is in the mission too.)

Oh and as for the Darkforce Dimension, the way I write Nexus it has a variety of effects. It can confront you with your greatest fears as some of you mentioned…but it also is physically draining. So most of the characters would get weaker the longer they were here. Well, maybe not Torment…. Also, time passes differently so as the NM/Hellions have only been here an hour or so….close to a day would have gone by back in the "real world".»

1.Kelly has no new powers, she's just using her light based powers to look vaguely like Kidds.

2. Almond makes forcefields through manipulation of electrons or something. I dunno exactly how he exsplains it.

3. You have it pretty much right about Kidd, with her being an energy manipulator and all. She was recently killed by Magneto.

4. I have no idea. I know Adam and her had some conversation in her room, but that's it.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…

The Darkforce Primer

«The Darkforce is such a Deus Ex Machina, there's no way to play it "wrong". It's a sentient dimension/energy that feeds off of darkness in other living beings. Loosely translate that as sin/guilt/shame/whatever. Asylum and Cloak were really the only two DF users to capitalize on the idea, and they mainly do it by absorbing their victims into the Darkforce.

Cloak, Nightcrawler, Darkstar, and other teleporters "walk through" the DF dimension when they teleport. Others like Shroud use it for construct use, but can't enter the DF at all, denying them teleportation. Also, Shroud and Darkstar (to name just the big names who are DF tapped) don't have access to the "fear effect" either.

In addition, Darkstar's constructs, for example, have no mass, while Shroud's do.

It's kind of like the Speedforce in this way: It is a powerful, extra-dimensional energy that can be manipulated in slightly different ways by a handful of beings that are attuned to it.

Consider the following explanation of Darkstar's flight:

Darkstar could levitate herself and fly at subsonic speeds by generating a virtually invisible portal into the Darkforce dimension along the contours of her body without passing through it, then balancing the attractive force of the dimension against that of the Earth's gravity.

Wha-huh?

Now that those ground rules have been laid, I shall now, since I'm in rant mode, enlighten you to Torment's abilities within those rules:

it takes a physical and mental toll on her

it is corruptive in prolonged doses

her constructs have mass

her constructs do channel the "fear effect" when they come in contact with anyone, friend or foe.

she cannot yet fully enter the DF/teleport at will, although she has on occasion

she cannot fly (I'm sorry - balance the dimensional attunement…)

And now you know!»

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 1, 2007, 1:14pm

I start to fire with the minigun, shooting at Erebus, but it's far too unwieldy for this sort of combat - I have to let it dissipate in order to avoid the blasts. Flipping away, I weave through them; my body can withstand the heat they make, but if one scores a direct hit, I'm finished.

Just, please, keep two things in mind… One: this is just a body, nothing more. It's a corpse and means nothing. Kidd's memory won't be served in any way by sparing it. All that matters is her spirit. Two: She was my friend as well, probably the best one I had. It hurts me too…"

I concentrate for a moment. Cerberus is going for desecration, thinking we'll be too weak to fight back against this one. I'm going to prove him wrong by…

…disintegrating Kidd's body.

«In theory!»

"I would say that it's for me to know and you to find out…"

A facsimile of the Thing grabs Meghan from behind and throws her off me.

"But you wont be surviving that long."

The Thing construct leaps towards her.

«Has Kidd been disintegrated?»

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Alexander "Cadmus" Baptiste on Mar 1, 2007, 1:28pm

I watch the process begin. Bit by bit. Atom by atom. Not happening. Disappearing into nothingness, I re-emerge behind Almond. Forming claws, I rake them across his back, breaking his concentration. "I would say that the scar is something to remember me by but you wont be around nearly long enough for that to really be true."

That's when I feel another trying to drain away the Darkforce that is about me. I turn to her. "I live, sleep, eat and breathe the Darkforce. You will not take it from me. Kidd?"

Torrence finds herself tackled by Kidd, covered in a battle armor contruct of her own.

Meghan teleports away from my Thing creation… but it does little good. The moment she re-emerges I destroy the first and creat another behind her, which strikes her hard from behind.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Alkaline on Mar 1, 2007, 1:30pm

Torrance twists in an attempt to throw Kidd off of her.

"Oh, this is rich, Chiyo-Chan. Finally you give me a reason."

Torrance tries to straddle Kidd and savagely beat her down.

She is fueled by the Darkforce taking control of her rage, and personal issues.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that Kidd was okay, but then looked around me.
Everywhere, we were taking damage… I didn't have enough light to help as much as I should. I watched Kidd at first.

I fired a wave of light at the Thing homonculi.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…

"Shoot, Torrance!" We had him pressured, that's a good sign; the tactic can work…but we have to make it effective.

"Emma, I need you to broadcast this to the others." She does so, staying at the edge of the field; her powers don't work on Kidd, and Erebus seems to be a similar story. "Everyone, focus on protecting Torrance and Meghan, they're key to this and he'll likely try to take them out first. Fighting Kidd is pointless, ignore her as best you can. Focus on the main target."

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…

I grunt vaguely as I hit the floor. The pain is great, but I mainly think of the indignity. Nobody does things like this to me… I've had kid-gloves on for too long anyway. I push myself off the ground into a standing position. I try to use the hurting as a focus.

"I don't think you quite know what you're messing with here…"
Atomic fucking mastery.
"I'll be around forever…"
I create a whirlwind of electricity and send it off towards Erebus. It's probably enough to encopmpass him completely, but I'm not counting on it working. If anything, it's a distraction. While he's busy evading and laughing, I'm going to try and make his body repel the Darkforce on it. It's all very abstract, so I don't get my hopes up… but who knows?

"Death and rebirth…" I whisper.

The light burns. A little. Not nearly so much as it does back on Earth. But it begins ebbing away at the shroud of darkforce protecting me and that is unnacceptable.

"We don't have to do this, Erebus."

"Yes. We do."

She takes her attention off of me to protect Meghan from continued assault from the Thing. It - in combination with Meghan's attempt to disperse him - works. The construct comes apart.

Kidd's struggle with Torrence gathers my attention. Particularly Torrence attacking Kelly to get her off or her. Such rage. Useful. I teleport behind her as she struggles with Kidd and place my hand upon her head. And my will upon her soul.

Give in. Completely. Utterly. Rage. They're all your enemy. All of them. Make them pay. Severely.

Everyone's fighting eachother again….

Nephy was looking around, not knowing who to help and who to fight. Meghan's teleporting left her too far away, but she didn't know what to do about all the girls fighting. Finally, she stepped in front of Torance.

"Focus on Erebus! Don't attack Kelly and Kidd!"

"Kelly, you idiot…"

I have finally had it. I create a little burst of electricity in her brain - just enough to knock her out without doing brain damage. Of course, I mean 'little' while taking into account her enhanced durability. Attacking her feels like a horrible idea… but I do it anyway.

She's messing everything up.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…

"Crap." I leap back once and avoid Torrance's slash by the shortest margin; she rips clean through body armor and cuts the skin. I let the Desert Eagle dissipate and do my best to dodge her swipes, greatly wishing this gadget didn't have a ten second recharge period.

"Torrance, wake up!" I flip back, kicking her in the face as I go.

The moment I'm done with Torrence, I spread my attentions elsewhere. Barely in time to bring up a gateway to deflect Current's electrical attack elsewhere - splitting up, the bolts of electricity begin to rain on the the entire battle field. Rather haphazardly, but who doesn't love chaos?

I'm pleased by it. Too pleased. I don't notice the my shroud of Darkforce is fleeing me. I don't notice, in fact, until I'm tagged in the shoulder by Wildfire. Same shoulder Wreck got, months ago. It hurts. But it's and incentive to start willing the Darkforce back to me, en masse. Need to actively will it to stay now. Annoying. Torrence is trying to pay her back for it. I'm about to join in when Meghan strikes me from behind.

"For the love of, Kidd?"

Slumping slightly, I straighten myself and don't bother looking at Meghan as Kidd blasts her with multiple waves of energy. I'm struck by a new entrant before I can do anything else. He's crouched by the portal. My shroud protects me mostly, but I recognize that the crowd needs to be thinned.

The ground begins to shake as large footsteps are heard in the distance.

[[>_> Sorry for the slowness. I'm a slow typist in general and this… is madness. This is my first, and possibly last time GMing anything. Thanks for the mercy.]]

Wild's extra mass bullets are less of a concern. I shift my shroud into a gateway and they pop out the moment that they enter, flying Wildly in multiple directions. Maybe once somebody gets capped she'll realize that it isn't working. Wreck through… Wreck.

I learned painfully that his entropy plays havoc with my Darkforce, the first time we met. No need to relearn that here. I teleport out of the way as fast as possible, though I'm rather painfully tagged once or twice before I do. I use the Darkforce to wrap the wound, keep from bleeding. But once again, Torrence is trying to strip me of it. I again look to Kidd - but she's gone, along with Meghan. Somewhere on Earth, the corpse is falling limp.

A fist of blood knocks me down from behind almost as soon as I reappear. If it wasn't happeninfg to me I would be amused. Add my arm trying to separate itself from me and I'm becoming irate. My control over the physics of the dimension is essentially the only reason I'm not painfully disarmed.

Shroud disappearring, Kidd gone, more and more people joining the party. This isn't as fun as I planned at all.

Which is why I'm pleased when my second choice for back up arrived. The shaking becomes slightly more intense as my simulacrum of Maleficient arrives on the scene.

I do love Disney.

Her first act - stepping on Wreck. Second? Raining fire on the heroes.

I focus on his creation only as much as it takes to avoid being crushed; he can remake and remake the thing as many times as he likes, so fighting it is pointless. And the way he redirects my bullets is a pain, too…it's a little dangerous, but close combat seems like the way to.

It's a bad idea for me to do very large forcefields. Specifically, ones that are bigger than about forty square feet or so. But I've never cared for my health, and I'm not going to start not. Especially not now.

I raise my hands and create huge stretch of forecefield between the dragon-thingy and US. I want to laugh at how awesome it feels. Then, of course, I create ANOTHER force field directly across the dragon, trying to cut it in half or something. Even cooler. And, of course, I keep up the pressure on Cerberus…

Funny, I think I can FEEL blood vessels popping in my head. Wait, am I laughing?

Aware of his presence this time, I use a gateway to redirect Joe's blast at Current - who is being quite the torn. The blast at Maleficient? It annoys her. And makes her put her attention on Joe specifically. She is about to reach out towards the boy when a wave of entropy destroys one of her claws. I used to think that a victim that constantly regenerated would be amusing. Wreck taught me better. Rather than killing him again, I have the dragon swipe at him with her surviving front claw. Not another death, but enough to, say, break mutiple bones.

As I give the beast a new claw, Meghan returns and continues Joe'ss trend of hitting me and the dragon. Myself? Annoyed. It even hurts, with Torrence leeching off my shroud. The dragon - being a construct after all - isn't really bothered. Maleficient shoots Meghan down with a jet of flame while Wildfire comes in for close up action.

I meet her rapier with one of my own. I keep up for a bit, but ultimately, I'm no swordsman. The first grazing blow tells me not to fight like one. Wild is brought out of her slashing fury as she feels herself being slowly pulled upwards.

By a noose.

Between Kelly and Current, Maelficient is starting to come apart. With my attention off of Wild I can reinforce her, but indirect control like this isn't enough. How sad. I haven't had to do this since I fought Nexus. Fading away, I reappear within Maleficient - merging my mind with the contruct and controlling it directly as oppose to delivering orders.

But I like this song and dance Kelly. Very much..

A jet of flame knock's Kelly's armored form out of the sky. The others. First? I've always liked prebattered prey. And the severly burned Nephy is right up my alley. Taking flight, I round the heroes once before swooping down upon them, jaws open. Nephy in particular in my sights.

The light disc swooped underneath me, catching me. I struggled back to my feet and went straight to Wild, trying to slice through the noose with the disc.

"Stay away from things for a few moments, Wild."

I directed the disc at Erebus again.

"I don't understand entirely."

I began emanating light and then reabsorbing it as soon as it moved too far from my body.

"What exactly happens to Arthur when you're in control? I assumed he'd be around here somewhere whenever you had control, but I guess that's not the case."

I tried to use the light to force a path through Malificient, so that I could get to Erebus himself and grab onto him.

Heh.

There's no part of me that's not hurting. My back's still bleeding. My head is throbbing, AGAIN. My chest is just aching a little - from Joe's blast. Might have broken a few ribs, I guess? Whatever. The important thing is that I might be burning. I spend a thought on snuffing out the flame, but I don't even try to pull myself to my feet anymore, it's not really necessary for anything.

I close my eyes and concentrate harder. If I play my cards right, I'll defeat this nobody and end up at the medical bay again…

…Why am I acting like this? I shouldn't be taking it so lightly…

As hard as it is to concentrate, I try to pull myself together and give Cerberus as many heart attacks as it's possible to have at the same time. It's very hard to reach him behind all that darkness, but I KNOW he's there… Just create electricity everywhere in there and I'm bound to hit something.

The noose is made brittle by Masstress and begins to strain under Wild's weight. Torrence slashing her down is just the icing on the cake.

I'm about to devour Nephy whole when… my nuts get really, really heavy. Blood lands in the eyes of the dragon, doing little since I'm not really looking through them. But I stop all the same, letting out a high pitched squeal.

I mean, come on. That was my nuts.

Wreck is back. On my back. And covering my form in entropy. Which is a bad thing for Joe, who runs into it trying to tackle me and ends up getting burned. I'm reinforcing Maleficient against the entropy but two things impede me. Kelly blasting a path to my real body.

And multiple heart attacks.

I would be dead if we were fighting on Earth. Here… I'm still probably close. I can't focus on the dragon enough to fight off the entropy any longer and poof out it before I'm devoured as well. I reappear with maybe a hundred feet between me and the heroes, clutching my chest. Can't keep this up much longer… not going down like this. And for the love of God, who's doing that to my nuts?!

My will kept this platform up. It will destroy it as well. It begins to shake violently, making Maleficient's footsteps seem like nothing. It starts crumbling slowly at the edges, working it's way to the middle. The peices that fall, fall endlessly. Endlessly, that is, until they reach the out of bounds and are destroyed.

«If I'm overstepping, call me on it.»

The disc charged at Erebus and I grabbed him. It rose higher and higher as I held onto him.

"Just stop this now, Erebus," I said softly. "Nothing more has to happen. I don’t know why you did this… but you can just end it now. I’m giving you this option because no matter what happened today, or in the past… I still consider us… friends, somewhat. Please. Take it,” I almost pleaded, especially when I could see the condition he was in.

Kelly. I think I was fond of her. Once. But since my other half came into being I've forgotten how to be. Which is why I feel nothing when I use two quick gateways to redirect Currents lightening bolt at her back.

"No… no.. no one leaves."

Everything hurts by this point, but I teleport before Meghan and rake newly formed claws across her abdomen. "NO ONE."

As I was falling, I heard Meghan say something about Nicolette. I thought I'd heard comments about her before, but at no stage was I sure, or did I understand. They were always drowned out by the sickly humming in my ears. I didn't have a chance to make sense of it this time either, as I was fighting unconsciousness, and was unable to even pull out of the fall, let alone make sense of Meghan's words.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 1, 2007, 3:10pm

I'm useless.

I can barely breath and stand, much less shoot. I'm in far over my head. It's looking more and more like I'm going to die here, consumed by the darkness. Just like everyone else. Just like Nicolette.

"Give her back…" It's all I can croak out through the haze.

Torrance is in better shape than the rest, thanks to her Darkforce tolerance, but she hasn't a clue what to do. She looks at Joe dragging Wild, then shrugs.

When in Rome… She charges at Erebus and pounces on him, swinging a massive Darkforce mace at his chest.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Kelly Alecia "Astraea" Lisa on Mar 1, 2007, 3:14pm

For some reason, Wild's croak - her weakened voice cut through everything, even the humming.

I can't let Wild down…

Give her back?

I pulled out of the fall and started flying for the first time today, rushing Erebus and letting a light blast off in his face.

"Don't say I didn't give you the chance. Why have you done all of this? And what do they keep on saying about Nico? What have you done to her? And if not here, then where is Arthur?" I asked firmly, another wave of light charging in my hand.

I'm going to run out of light soon…

Hehehe. Worms crawling. Used a bit too much there, and didn't even really phase him.

Wreck falls straight down from Erebus, bounces headfirst off of the ground and lays there giggling.

A moment later, he staggers up. Prepares to fire another blast, then stops as he sees Kelly charging in.

"…..careful, love," he says quietly.

It's just the ground… IT's just the ground… It's just the ground.

Nephy manages to make it to her feet. Erebus looks pretty messed up, a thought flashes through her mind, but she's too ashamed of it at the moment. Raiseing her arm, a massive hand forms on top of it, and attempts to Slam Erebus into the now weak platform.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Alexander "Cadmus" Baptiste on Mar 1, 2007, 3:30pm

The ground continues to shake. The platform becomes smaller still. I'm just barely concious. All the same I look to Wildfire.

"No."

The mind. It's willing. But the flesh. Arthur's damned body. Weak. I try for another shroud as they come forth. Mastress. Torrence and her mace. Kelly's damned light blasts.

The pain. So much. But I can endure. I must endure. Body be damned, I am a God. They will not topple me here. They will not. Everybody. Everybody dies. I attempt o fight through the assault. Raising my arms for the grand finale.

But it never comes.

I don't even sense it forming, I've become so weakened. No teleporting. No redirection. Just me getting crushed by a solid, massive hand of blood. Grinded into the platform I feel more than conciousness ebbing. Everything. My entire sense of being.

The light.

The Darkforce being ebbed away from me.

Lightning.

My nuts.

Entropy.

That damned bloody fist.

It's too much. I try to fight it but I just feel fading. Fading. Fading….

***

The shaking stops. The platform holds. As Nephy raises the bloody fist off of Erebus, his form is seen lying there, barely concious. But decidedly different. Kelly is the only one that recognizes it. All of the physical features are the same, true. But the black, scaly skin has taken a more human, caucasion appearance. His stark white hair has become blonde. And he grew pupils. Arthur, Erebus's human half, raises his head, looking at the assembled heroes looking down at him - looking at him confused one would assume. He says one thing.

"I'm free…"

"Doing well, all things considered." I don't take my eyes off Erebus.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Alexander "Cadmus" Baptiste on Mar 1, 2007, 3:40pm

I still feel sore from Erebus' battle. Same body after all. But I feel lighter than I have in years. Since Erebus first came into being. I try to force myself to my legs, and fail. I settle with being on my hands and knees. I look to Wildfire.

"Yes… Nicolette. Of course."

It hurts, naturally. I imagine every use of my powers would, after the beating my body just took. But it doesn't matter. Rectifying the atrocities committed by Erebus is a long road. This doesn't even count as the start. I strain a little bit but I do it. Reaching into the depths of the Darkforce Dimension where Erebus had her trapped, I teleport Nicolette forth. She appears as gently as I could manage a few feet away from me on the platform.

Shaken. Fetal position. Lord knows what else. Yeah… I've a long way to go.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…

Torrance catches Wreck's eye.

"I'm not 100% with my teleports, but Meghan is still out cold," and she points to Meghan's limp body.

She offers her shoulder to prop Kelly up.

Bringing Nicolette back was essentially the last thing I had in me. I point to gateway to Nicolette's room - it's still there.

"Do that. I'm going to lie down here for the next millenia."

Okay. That was the last thing I had in me. I collapse, unconcious.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Squirrel Girl on Mar 1, 2007, 3:50pm

I notice Kidd's body is there…it's not right to put her there. I doubt Nicolette needs to wake up next to a dead body now…I'll hold onto her until an instructor arrives.

Re: Mission 4: Abandon Hope…
Post by Prime on Mar 1, 2007, 3:53pm

Nicolette didn't feel better.

She could feel something change… In fact, everything seemed to have changed. The light was back and she could move again. But then she realized… The light, as relatively weak as it was, still managed to blind her. Just as she was understanding that she wasn't floating anymore, she slammed into the ground painfully. She vaguely noticed that it didn't hurt, but that hardly mattered. It would have been hardly noticeable on the backdrop of everything else that hurt her… She hadn't really felt anything earlier, but the numbness was leaving her now. She still felt cold, but it was now coupled with an all-encompassing pain in every part of her body.

What hurt the most was her head. Thoughts kept streaming through her head so fast she thought she'd pass out, but she just wasn't that lucky. One horrible thought after another, and another, and another… Her vision, as blurry and white as it was, was spinning. She wanted to throw up, but couldn't.

She was vaguely aware of the fact that she was moving. Almost on instinct, she had pulled herself up a little. She wanted to sleep… No, actually, she wanted to SCREAM. Just scream, as loud and hard as possible, until she felt a little better…

In a frightening moment, she suddenly realized someone was holding her. She struggled and closed her arms around the person's neck as well as she could. If she hadn't been weak as a kitten, she would have popped their head off…

After a little while, I stirred and woke up. Rising, tired and groggy, from the floor, I looked around me.

I was just in the Darkforce… Nico's room?

I looked at the bed. I guessed it was Nico sleeping there. Getting some rest after everything that had happened. But the blanket was too far over her. It couldn't be comfortable, having it cover her face entirely.

I pulled the blanket back a bit so that it wouldn't cover her face. It was Kidd. I just stood there for a few moments, looking at her face, shocked.

Why did it have to be you? Kalvin's right. Sunfire's right. And they should have just left Sunfire alone… just for a few moments… just so that he could-

I kneeled beside her and placed a the back of my hand gently on her cheek. It was stone cold. I stayed there, kneeling besides her silently.

What she saw lightened the knot in her chest considerably. She let go of Wildfire's neck and smiled. It looked horrible and fake, but reminded less and less of a broken mirror every second.

"Bella…" she rasped, "Bella… I…"
She passed out in her arms before she could continue.
