Lacking access to the medical bay, the strange girl Aaron found at the compounds front door lay resting on a cot in a supply closet.

Unable to understand her except through snippets of his telepathy, Aaron realizes that the girl fears a man named Thoth-Amon and Father Set.

Generation X, armed with those names and Demi's hyothesis of Mephisto's plan, decide their next course of action.

They are skittish, because on Wild's last recon run, she saw armies amassing around the temples.

"What do we do?" Aaron looks between Wild and Nathaniel, wanting instruction to be able to focus on.

"That would be a bit rash, Joe…we're strangers in a strange land. They could have different weaponry, any sorts of abilities; it's even possibly that the our laws of physics don't match up. We need to proceed with caution."

Demi sits quietly.

"I would wager, based on life essence in the air…4200. But it could be 300. Or 23.

Perhaps we should just explore the pyramids?"

Joe paces back and forth a little bit, waiting for a game plan.

"Why should we do anything?"

I lay back.

"We still have absolutely no real idea about what is going on. And hopefuly Dr. Strange will simply find us and deal with it soon. Why not just lay low?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 2, 2007, 10:49pm

"Exploration would be a good idea, yes, but we'll have to proceed cautiously." I look to Marcus and Aaron. "We'll head out, but I want you two to stay high in the sky and make sure there's no one approaching our position; you can switch out to let each other rest as we go. Sara, bring all the water bottles you can find here. Once everything is set, we'll move to the nearest pyramid."

Swarms of scarabs fill the Ops Room.

As the scarabs swarm in, it's apparent something is chasing them; they aren't attacking.

Within seconds, there's another sound: slavering jackals, wreathed in shadow, spill into the room, stamping out and snapping at the scarabs.

"Everyone, hold." The jackals seem more interested in the bugs - for the moment. Their shadowy nature intrigues me, though. "Joe, Marcus, stay at our fronts and blast them if they get near. Aaron, can you sense anything in these things' minds?"

The scarabs coalesce into a scarab-headed man, and the dogs form a pack, and leap at the man's throat.

The dogs merge as one, and the giant jackal tears the scarab man's throat out.

There's a slow clapping from the back of the Ops Room.

"Obedient, just like the bitch you are, Anput. And what of you, children? Do you fear the coming of Set?"

Meanwhile, several worlds away…

Stephen Strange, Amanda Sefton, and Jennifer Kale stand in the Ops Room.

"They're in Hell?" Kitty asks, astonished.
"They're…elsewhere. Another time in another place," Dr. Strange offers.

Amanda steps forward. "Kitty, we've all scried, consulted the stars, everything we could. There are portents and signs; but we don't know why he's abducted the children."

Pacing back and forth, Rachel looks up frustratedly. "Marcus had a pact with Mephisto."

"And he is now heir to Hell as we know it," Strange nods. "But we'll sort the ramifications later. I'm more concerned with the fact I can't track them."

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

A woman steps forward from the shadows, scratches the jackal's head.

"I am Nephthys, sister and wife of Father Set. You will not disrespect The Old Ones, boy. Hold your tongue."

She motions at Marcus, jerking him forward by his tongue.

"Where is Isis?"

The dark woman grins evilly.

Nephthys looks at the scarab-man's corpse.

"We have snuffed the sun. Osiris is ours, Anput is mine to command; we control death. Give me Isis.

Give me life.

Goddess that I am, you would do well not to try my patience and leave you to Thoth-Amon and the Old Ones."

The large jackal growls, like thunder.

"We're not weaklings. Not gods, no, but don't underestimate our power." I shake my head, motioning for the others to hold - for now. "What do you need Isis for, exactly?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 2, 2007, 11:16pm

"Control of life, of course. Everyone knows Set is fallow, infertile as the desert itself.

If we are to raze the abandoned kingdom of Hell, we need life, to birth our warriors. Thoth-Amon has seen this, and Father Set commands it, so it shall be."

The jackal backs Nephy against the wall, his fangs at her throat.

"Now where is my sister?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

Post by Nephy "Lifebeat" Nephrahim on Apr 2, 2007, 11:19pm

"Errr…."

I try to edge away as far as I can from the jakal. I'm not sure if we should fight, though we'll still proboly end up doing it.

And then Marcus blasts it and Joseph blasts her. Great.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 2, 2007, 11:20pm

"This is non-negotiable - you come into our temple, you make demands of us, and you expect us to be accommodating? Where we come from, we're the gods - there's are thousands of beings back in our own world with powers like us. A planet full of gods. If you don't want their wrath, you'll pay proper homage and leave."

A bit of a gambit. Hope it works.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 2, 2007, 11:21pm

Marcus' particle blasts go through the jackal, who swats Nephy aside, and leaps at Marcus.

Nephthys attempts to dodge Joe's attack but is struck in the stomach.

She catches herself, then opens her mouth wide, spraying an arc of gelatinous fire across the room.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on Apr 2, 2007, 11:21pm

Joe's still moving forward as his sleeve catches fire. Remembering what he was taught in school, he dives forward at Nephthy's feet, rolling over and over, smothering the flames with his bulk.

"Ah!"

Aaron successfully deflects the fire attack, which hits the couch and begins to smolder.

The jackal is grabbed by Nephy and thrown, but it slips through the blood fingers and morphs into a naked dark skinned woman, with a jackal's head.

She rakes at Wildfire with a clawed hand.

Nephthys spits fire again, aiming for Nephy and Joe.

"I swear on the Dog I'll have your skins for this."

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 2, 2007, 11:29pm

Marcus finds the key unresponsive.

An unfazed Demi peeks over his shoulder.

"I think it's out of charge."

As Sir Nathaniel breaks outside, he notices the sky has gone black. No stars, no moon, but black. The desert sand still scorches to the touch.

There's a wavering motion on the horizon.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 2, 2007, 11:30pm

I flip away from the jackal woman as the others back out, making a steady retreat.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

Joe rolls forward and stands up in front of Nephy, shielding her. Then he tries something he's never done before: he attempts to fire a wide blast from his back, hoping against hope that it will work and push the fire back.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 2, 2007, 11:36pm

All efforts to avoid the fire are successful, but Nephthys and the jackal woman press the attack.

Joe's blast knocks their attackers backwards, but also takes out a portion of the ceiling.

There's no choice but to head out now, as the ceiling crumbles around them, and sand pours in.

The sand trembles, and tiny grains dance to and fro on the surface of the dunes.

There's a rythymic thunder, Wildfire and Nathaniel instantly recognize it as a cadenced march.

The Compound entrance caves in, although now it seems the desert itself is swallowing their base.

In the distance, on the black horizon, an army can be seen marching towards them, banners aloft, spears raised.

«I thought the first 1:10 of music would be cool for the army's march toward you, the rest is just bad-ass battle music or you can dismiss it. I just wanted the Overture.»

"Well, one would imagine that's Thoth-Amon. I wonder if he seeks the princess as well?

Oh! And Father Set. Father Set commands the desert itself. Perhaps he was punishing them? Or saving them from you? Although I don't know if you would have won. But how can you stand against 300?"

Fear…

Tiny waves of negative emotion wash over Joe, feeding his stores of energy. The glow begins building up again.

As the team retreats, Joe pulls up the rear…partly to absorb more energy, but mostly because he's not a very good runner under the best of circumstances, and the sand is making things much trickier.

Generation X find themselves at the foot of a large pyramid.

There's a massive staircase climbing to mid-height, and what looks like a temple entrance.

Isis is still asleep.

At the top of the stair case is an altar. Over the altar is a large statue of a seven headed snake.

There's a skeleton on the altar, and a stairway behind the altar: the passage is lit by torches.

The army in the distance marches onward, seemingly in no hurry.

Awakened by Aaron's telepathic command, the girl known as Isis staggers to her feet, confused and very, very frightened.

"Who…are you agents of the The Great Old Ones?"

Wild's grenade lands in the midst of the army, and the explosion sends several soldiers thrown like rag dolls.

The cloaked figure raises his arms, and the army proceeds to scale the side of the pyramid with their bare hands.

Generation X heads into the passage, a long, dry tunnel lit by torches, and it winds it's way down until they reach the upper rafters of a large temple.

There are several Cultists and several more altars, though they are less ornate.

Isis grabs at Dillon's arm. "I believe we are in the House of R'lyeh."

Generation X can't risk sealing off the passage they entered from without alerting the temple's occupants.

Nephy, Nathaniel, and Wild's assault quickly disables the cultists.

Generation X find themselves in the temple itself. It's very ornate, trimmed with gold and turquoise, and there's a ruby statue of the seven headed snake at the rear of the Hall.

"Stop."

The cloaked figure stands in front of them. He removes his cowl, and he is a fierce, dark man, and anyone with an ounce of Pop Culture knowledge places him as GI Joe's Serpentor. But not.

Demi hovers indifferently, and Isis clings tight to Dillon.

"There is no escape. My soldiers cover all exits. I only wish to speak with you."

I sense it in you. That is strength, boy! That is power! Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart; you know of what I speak.

He drops his cloak, revealing his naked body.

"Do you wish to incur the wrath of Set, the viper, the desert?"

"Isis."

"Nathan, chop these up!" Joe moves on to the other groups, slashing at them with his newfound weapons.

That lady's dead, we wasn't able to save her…I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but now I gotta make sure that none of my friends join you…

"It was shock. She needed first aid and quick professional help. The situation we were in prevented it."

Seth…

The plasma that protected the team against the venom rained down upon the tentacles.

"Nephy, get a hold of yourself, we need you." I fire a few more shots, for all the good it does. "Joe needs you!"

Sir Nathaniel rushes forward, and begins slashing at anything that gets near him.

Dan does the same.
"Anyone have a Phoenix Down?"

Demi, who has idly played ball and jacks the whole time the battle has gone on, floats over to Marcus.

"Has your key worked yet?"

"…"

I don't move, but the dead snake's blood rises and becomes dozens of sharp pieces, resembling broken glass, and head straight for the tentacles, cutting and slashing as much as they can.

Aaron stops looking at Isis, and turns back to the statue, levitating it, and trying to crush anything that isn't Gen X, and moving.

Marcus tries to see if the key is responding to him.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

The tentacles regroup, and Shterot animates the snake's corpse.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Rapt "Roc"/Fragment/Fraternity on Apr 4, 2007, 12:30am

Aaron appears to be working on instinct, and blind thought, not doing anything requiring any skill, just raw brute force, in picking up, and slamming down objects on things that are moving that he doesn't recognize.

Joe stumbles his way over to Nephy, and stands very close to her, ready to protect her from the nasties.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

The key responds, but not in the manner Marcus expects.

Generation X finds itself in the Ops room, surrounded by Rachel, Dr. Strange, Jennifer Kale, and Rintrah.

Except for Marcus.

He finds himself in his own personal Empty Hell. Demi is with him.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Marcus/Darya/Joshua/Ghost on Apr 4, 2007, 12:32am

He looks at the hell and said tonelessly.

"You knew that was going to happen didn't you Demi?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 4, 2007, 12:32am

Demi looks at Marcus. "Now that is odd. I felt like I was pulled, and then sucked through a very tight loopy straw. And now we're home.

Would you like to re-do the curtains?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Armando "Army" Rosewell on Apr 4, 2007, 12:32am

Immeasurably confused, I must say.

Before anyone says anything, I take a headcount. "Marcus…did we leave Marcus back there?"

Rachel?

He keeps a combat stance. Prepared for tricks.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

Joe slumps down on the ground, setting the fangs (if they made the trip) aside, and scoots over to Nephy, putting an arm around her. "I'm sorry…I'm sorry we wasn't able to save that lady," he says, his voice thick.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 4, 2007, 12:33am

Dr. Strange looks at the teenagers.

"Are they all accounted for, Rintrah?"

The minotaur nods. "Aye, except for Marcus. The holder of the key, himself."

He sighs and with a wave of his hand creates his old neighborhood in New Jersey.

"Demi. Why are you with me anyways?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Cheshire on Apr 4, 2007, 12:36am

Joe lets her push him away. He's too exhausted to care one way or the other right now. He slumps against the couch and looks around. "Where…where's Marcus? Is he back there with that snake? We gotta go get him!"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Marcus/Darya/Joshua/Ghost on Apr 4, 2007, 12:37am

Marcus tries finding his friends, searching with his mind's eye. He hoped that they weren't still in the battle.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 4, 2007, 12:39am

Demi smiles at Marcus.

"No. I didn't know nothin' would happen. Like I said, we were pulled."

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 4, 2007, 12:42am

Rachel sighs and sits backasswards in an office chair.

"Dr. Strange and his friends seem to think Marcus set off a dangerous chain of supernatural events, across realities. Conveniently, that was Excalibur's old specialty.

And old friend of ours whisked Kitty away, I can fill you in later.

The main point now is that we were able to bring all of you back except Marcus."

Dr. Strange nods thoughtfully. "Marcus is bound to his realm, effectively imprisoned. I cannot pull him out. I only saved you all just in time."

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Marcus/Darya/Joshua/Ghost on Apr 4, 2007, 12:42am

Marcus continues searching for his friends, moving to where the battle was and sees that they're not there.

Where are they?! Where the hell are they?!

A house explodes next to him, before quickly repairing itself.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

Hearing that Marcus doesn't seem to be alone with Set, Joe lets his head fall back against the couch.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

I sigh, far beyond aggravated. "The entire point of this was to…" Calm down. Think straight. "Is there any way bring him back?"

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Alkaline on Apr 4, 2007, 12:49am

Dr. Strange nods at Nephy.

"Yes, but Mephisto was not bound in a trap. Marcus isn't the new lord and master of that plane. He's a prisoner. He's meant to kill or be killed by Mephisto's enemies. I can't locate Mephisto.

Kitty and Amanda went off in search of an old sorcerer, Belasco, who seems to have recent ties with Mephisto. It was they who usurped control of my friend, Jennifer."

He nods at Kale, who looks warily at the team, and leaves the room.

"We're hoping to divulge more details. The question I have for you all is, how far are you going to go for Marcus?"

"All the way."

After all this, anything less would be beyond stupid, as well as wrong.

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword
Post by Cheshire on Apr 4, 2007, 12:51am

"Well, I don't wanna speak for no one else, but I'd do just about anything to get him back. He's my friend and one of my teammates and he's nice and I don't want him to be in Hell no more."

Re: Gen X #6 - The Phoenix on the Soulsword

Marcus checks on what Strange and the others are doing back in the compound, and sees his friends.

"Whew…."

He lets himself fall on an extremely comfy chair.

"So they're safe…"

"Then I suggest you all wait for Ms. Pryde to return with Amanda.

I must retreat to my loft in Greenwich and mull and brood over this, glossing over my omnipotent powers for sake of a challenging plot."

Dr. Strange does the Spider-Man thing with his fingers and disappears, taking Rintrah with him.

—-

Demi looks sadly at Marcus. "Aw, we didnt' charge the Key. I suppose that snake-man isn't really dead. How awful if her were to pursue you on your journeys!"

She dances around for a minute, singing The Cure's Lovecats to herself. Then she pauses.

"Do you know much about Vikings?"

To Be Continued…
