Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings
Post by noodles on Jan 14, 2008, 8:04pm

Generation M #10: Help! Help! I'm Being Repressed!

A regiment of mutates are on their way to Genosha, but SHIELD isn't very happy about that. Will our merry band intervene, and risk the wrath of their old government? Or will they allow innocent freaks to be executed for treason?

On sale Thursday, ~10PM.

Possible alternate Gen M #10 tonight (depending on a couple things I'll find out soon):

…With Butterfly Wings.

A rash of suicides have occurred among the lesser powered mutants of Genosha. The staff seems powerless to follow any leads, so sets Generation M on the case. Are these isolated incidents, a pact, or part of an as-yet-unguessed macabre plot?

Alright, it's an as-yet-unguessed macabre plot. You got me.

Generation M is called into a meeting one day. Both Maximoffs, Colossus, and Kitty Pryde are there, all with varying expressions/moods. Kitty looks like she's about to break down, practically chewing her fingernails. Colossus seems to be trying to comfort her, to no real degree of success. Quicksilver is pacing back and forth at minimally enhanced speed, looking pissed beyond belief, while Wanda's expression is very difficult to read. She seems to have a lot on her mind, and you get the distinct impression that she's anywhere but here.

"I have to apologize for wasting your time, well, THEY have to apologize," says Quicksilver angrily to Generation M. "This entire situation is being made too much of."

"Made too much of? Pietro, we are talking about five LIVES here," says Kitty. "Come in, everyone, there's a lot to discuss."

"None of it meaningful," says Quicksilver.

Everyone else fixes him with a piercing glare.

"I mean it," he affirms.

Wanda will smile slightly at Khan when he arrives, and then seem to be a little more with it.

Colossus pulls out a small manila file, because all good information is in manila files. Inside are five small reports, each complete with two glossy photographs…one of a living person, the second of the same person dead. There is various other information in the reports. I'll give highlights in a moment.

"Five students have died under mysterious circumstances," he begins…

"Committed suicide," Quicksilver interjects.

"…died under mysterious circumstances," Colossus continues, as if the interruption didn't happen. "No one is speaking to staff on this matter. We felt they would talk to you more."

Kitty nods. "Yeah, and I'm sorry you guys had to see the one…well, some of you. Bad timing."

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings
Post by havok3595 on Jan 17, 2008, 11:07pm

The highlights of the reports:

#1:
Barry Goodrich, 17. Mild geokinetic, ability to drop objects into the ground about three to six inches. Found buried in the lawn, with a note explaining his suicide. This note seems to focus on how he was never good enough for the field team, and actually says some objectionable things about Pester as well.

#2:
Maria Lewis, 15. Her ability was dispersing small amounts of energy, usually turning off light bulbs. The last she was seen was at a small mixer where people began referring to her as "The Clapper" derisively, after which she ran off campus. The next morning, she was dead in her room with a jar of sleeping pills next to her. The lights in the room seem to completely not function now, for no reason. No amount of lightbulb replacement or electrical work seems to fix them.

#3
Jennifer Cashman, 16. Minor pyrokinetic. She also left a note, but her note talked about how she just didn't care about anything and wanted it all to be over. It explains that she thought of Genosha as a new opportunity for her to be respected/liked, and she still never made any friends. She was found burned to death, because of course her power didn't confer immunity to flame with it, that would be too convenient.

#4:
Killian Ellison. Physical mutation, had walrus tusks. Known to be somewhat emo and withdrawn, it really didn't surprise anybody when he died. Hung himself in his room.

#5:
Matthew James. Minor telepath, unable to do much more than read surface thoughts, and even that unreliably. Also left a note, found with all his vital signs completely stopped for no apparent reason, unable to be resuscitated. His note simply says, "I'll be back."

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings
Post by havok3595 on Jan 17, 2008, 11:09pm

«I'm fine with following people via text.»

Colossus says, "You are here to discover why this is happening. I do not believe it to be suicide. However, intervention is good, if you discover other possible victims."

"This is ridiculous. I refuse to entertain this further," says Quicksilver, who then leaves.

Wow. Mentioned in a suicide note. It's hard to know whether to be honored or sickened. Though sickened is the default mode, not many people get to be mentioned in a suicide note. Perhaps a new word is in order. Sicknored. Honockened? No, neither will do. Just be sickened.

As for friends as a lead, looking through the reports:

Barry had two friends that he frequently hung out with. The three of them were minor troublemakers/jokesters. The two friends have been asked some questions by staff, and haven't revealed anything of note. I'm not bothering to make up this many names, but I'll play them.

Maria had her father also on the island, she's actually Genoshan by birth. Her powers were revealed after the Gengineer/etc fell out of power.

Jennifer and Killian had no significant known friends.

Matthew was part of a poetry group, and involved in chess club. The staff has asked people in both activities questions, to no real success.

Looking through the notes, it's hard to figure out what to do. But, history is history. Even if it is almost meaninglessly petty, and a little weird.

Pester goes to make a copy of the report with the locations of Barry's two friends. Hell, maybe he can find out what "objectionable" things came up. Though he quickly reprimands himself for thinking about that when people are killing themselves. Still…

To be honest the only lead that looked remotely promising is Maria's father, so she heads off there.

Pester goes to hunt down Jimmy and Billy Lee. He figures he'll start by finding out what rooms they're living in. He does this by approaching Kitty Pryde.

"Hi."

He tries to sound friendly, but may come off creepy.

"How would I go about finding out where these two guys stay?"

«It'll take a few minutes to post up Maria's dad's place, explained by it taking you a few minutes to get there.»

«Maria's Room»

Maria's room is smaller than a field team room, noticeably smaller. The lights, as mentioned, do not work. The room is decorated in "Rainbow/Unicorn" fashion. Everything seems to be really well taken care of and clean, although cluttered. The only exception to this is a hoodie thrown on the floor, which seems slightly grass stained to Khan's eye.

«Maria's father's place»

When Darya arrives, the first thing she notices is that it's one of the few buildings standing in an almost completely ruined block. It isn't standing well, but it's standing. It was probably once one of a row of townhouses, but now stands very alone. It's clearly been worked on very hard, and Maria's dad, a well-built and very hairy man, is actually out working on smoothing out fresh cement on the walkway leading to the door.

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings
Post by osmosis on Jan 17, 2008, 11:37pm

Nadia is feeling all sorts of withdrawn and uneasy with the subject at hand. Suicide. It's just… ugh. She finds the possibility that it's all tied together in a macabre plot about equally disquieting as things being exactly what they seem. She doesn't want anything to do with this, really.

But what Nadia wants and what Nadia gets often differ.

She asks about directions to the poetry club, and heads there after she gets them.

The grass type is relatively common wild grass to the area. There's a very brief vision of a park at night, it's difficult to specify which. There's a number of people there, Killian noticeably. There's someone speaking…but it's a brief vision. «I hope I'm playing his visions right, let me know.»

Pester takes a look at the doorframe, after having made his way to the guys' room. He left his sword in his own room. The worst thing that could happen is that they see his sword and suddenly pull out their own, and challenge him in the name of The Dragon. Or something equally weird.

He raises his hand and makes a fist, getting ready to knock. The fist hangs there for a moment, feeling awkward. Is the awkwardness due to the knowledge that he's going to bring up bad memories for these poor guys? Is he feeling crummy about how his room is better than theirs, because he's on a field team? Is he guilty about the fact that he actually takes a certain pleasure in that?

As Pester knocks on the door, he realizes only too late what that nagging feeling was. He forgot to ask about their powers. That was it. That would have been smart.

Jimmy and Billy Lee open the door. Their room is small, just big enough for a bunk bed and a mass of videogaming equipment. They seem to be playing Halo, and only allow Pester to interrupt them for a moment. "What do YOU want?" one of them asks.

A lot of black. Fitting, for the time being at least. She has no real idea of what she's doing here and is moved on only out of the feeling that she should be doing something. It was, she figures, the bizarreness of Matthew's death that spurned her to investigate him particularly. Of course, now that she's begun, she doesn't know where to begin.

She waits for the end of the current poem. She gets the strange urge to clap, but that would be pretty horrible, she thinks.

"Hello, my name is Nadia, I… wanted to pay my respects. And if it's not too much to ask, to learn a little bit about Matthew."

The last few years of your life have been a delicate balance of violence and temperament. You've been carrying around a deadly weapon, doing the absolute best you can not to use it. You've even gone so far as to build, into that weapon, a far less lethal weapon. Now, you're being told that you're responsible for murder. You have ended a life. You have been told that your struggle not to harm anyone has been thwarted in a way that you could never have imagined, and you were not even aware of it until the victim's loved ones throw it in your face. What do you say to that?

"Oh."

Not very inspiring. Try again.

"What makes you say that?"

Pester stands awkwardly in the doorway.

«Maria's house»

Mr. Lewis nods at Joe. "I knew that my Maria would never do that. And don't worry about the house, it'll be fine without you, you already did most of the hard stuff. You two can come in, I have some actual lemonade. Fruit can sometimes be a premium around here, but Maria really loved lemonade, so I always made sure to have some."

He walks into the house and pours actual lemonade.

«Khan»

«There's actually several parks in Genosha, but Khan will pick one that seems likely.»

There's a small copse of woods with a large clearing. The center of the clearing seems to be very well worn lately, and the woods shield its view from outside. It's difficult to know for sure, but this looks like the place in the vision. There's a small piece of paper Khan notices, it says, "Ever wanted to be more than what you are?" Then it has the name of the park, and a date and time that match when Maria was missing.

«Sara»

Kitty shrugs. "Maybe you should tag along with one of your friends."

Everyone looks at Nadia weirdly. Finally, a sickly thin girl with obviously dyed black hair steps forward. "He'll be back. He saw it coming."

"We don't talk about that…" says a pimply guy next to her.

"No, he'll be back. He wrote a poem about it."

She fishes around in her retro lunchbox purse and pulls out a sheet of paper.

"He gave me the original, it was so inspiring."

The poem seems to be about how someone's going to kill him, but not kill him…he'll die himself, but not die…and ends with "I'll be back."

«Pester»

"Well, you're on the field team, and you suck. He was focused on that. He wanted to be on that team so bad…and he figured he couldn't suck worse than you."

"It's impossible to suck worse than you."

They continue playing Halo.

«Lewis household»

Mr. Lewis shakes his head at Joe. "No, she didn't, but…well, she kept complaining about this guy that would come around talking about being more powerful, he had meetings or something. It used to really annoy her, because you know her, she likes who she is. But that's the only thing like that I know, and that's all I know."

«Khan»

Another vision of the meeting here, this one a little more vivid, if ultimately useless because someone is holding it at about pocket level. He can see about twenty people here, and hear a speech, the only words of which that are distinct are the ones on the pamphlet.

"Yeah, that legion of Brutes humping your bloodied corpse would disagree, smart guy."

That might have been a little low, even if his friend didn't just jump in a bathtub with the toaster. Still, you can't just stand around and take that.

"Nobody can live their life by another person's standard. I didn't kill him, I only met him once. You're deluding yourselves if you think he did anything less than kill himself. There have been something like four other people on this compound that did the same thing; if you want to stick your heads in the sand and scapegoat my suck for his death, that's fine. I'd think you'd want to figure out what actually happened, though."

«Lewis household»

Mr. Lewis shakes his head. "Not much. I know he wasn't a student, or that she hadn't seen him around before. He seemed older, she said, she thought he might be a new teacher at first. I think she said his name was Chris. That's all I know. Oh, and that Mr. Maximoff kicked him off campus once. She was very happy when that happened. I want to see someone pay for this too. Maybe Mr. Maximoff knows more about this Chris fellow. Thank you, Joey. I really appreciate having people like you around looking out for us. As for the meetings, apparently it was a plan to get an A class power, that's all I know."

«Pester»

They stop playing Halo, and give Pester their full attention.

"What he did could work for you too," one of them says.

"Shut up Billy!" says the other hastily. "Don't listen to him, Pester, he's just being mean."

It doesn't sound real convincing.

There's no further hint on the note, that's all that's printed on it. But he does flashback a little to the vision, and can see Maria sitting on the ground listening, leaning back on her elbows, which explains the grass. She seems to look at him, but it's just a trick of the light.

Nadia avoids antagonizing anybody by suggesting that Matthew isn't returning. Seeing as how Nadia has been to hell and brought her dead teammate back with her, she would have a hard time saying that "People don't come back from the dead" with any sort of conviction anyway.

She looks to Sara as she walks in, but isn't in the smiling mood.

Pester's first instinct is to pull out a magic marker, and write "We are gay" on the door of the two mutants. But that would go against all that tolerance crap Xavier taught him.

He comes within a few seconds of just whipping it out and peeing on their door, but decides it would be far more mature to just leave it alone. He still allows himself a mild chuckle though, at the thought of their hypothetical expressions as warm pee streamed under their door. Maybe they'd save their game before grabbing a mop?

Pester shakes these thoughts out of his head as he looks down at the flyer, searching for the date and time. And the location of the thing. Whether it's already happened or not, he'll head to the location.

Nadia shakes her head, turning back to the thin girl. One thing that seems certain (though one wonders how certain it is if it only seems certain) is that nobody seems to be under the impression that Matthew killed himself.

"You know… It strikes me that you wouldn't have to fake your own deaths if this guy was just Captain Altruism, like you're trying to push him."

Pester finally sees Roxie. She hears him saying "What are you doing? Drop a roof on him, call your teammates, anything other than watching me get eaten! It's embarrassing…"

«Pester»

"Fake our own deaths?" asks Barry, confused. "It's a deathlike state, but we were at his place the whole time. We didn't fake anything."

A new voice, from behind Pester. Roxanne can't see him from her angle.

"That will be enough of you talking," it says, and Barry suddenly seems to stiffen up, almost zombielike.

"I'm afraid I'm going to have to kill you for real now, Pester," says the voice. "You'll never submit now, will you?"

Joe heads out to the warehouse at a run (will stop far enough away from it so as to be semi-stealthy)

Oh, sorry! Wait…I forget, can you hear thoughts, too, or is it a one-way thing? Or, um…wait, I'm talking to myself. Or thinking to myself. Or…okay, I'm going to help now.

The ground beneath…whoever this is…opens up into what I think is that sand monster from Return of the Jedi. Same one that ate Boba Fett, and is currently trying to eat this guy in the same way. While that's going on, though, I focus on digging up Pester and getting him free.

"No. No, I probably won't. But you won't get your chance to find out!"

Whoever is behind him, should hear the sound of many powers being charged up. Flame shots, electricity, ice beams, giant footsteps, all that fun stuff.

Nadia heads out through the nearest window, shifting into air and flying towards the address. She figures she'll have speed and invisibility on approach on her side.

Khan takes off to the warehouse as fast as his training will carry him.

As everyone approaches, the warehouse situation starts to get crazy. A giant gout of flame approaches Roxanne, who does still manage to sort of get Pester free. Somehow, he's merged with the dirt. So while he's free, he still feels, to him, immobile. She can pull it out, but it would hurt.

"Oh. Shit."

A feeling of terror grips our hero, as he thinks he's done the Kitty Pryde, and been phased into dirt. Not that it really matters. It's not like he can have panic destruction, or something. So he just sits there.

If she can, Nadia gets between the flame and Roxy, shifting into it and trying to divert it.

Last second save by Nadia…but suddenly…as she is flame, she sees, for one second, Maria beneath her. Maria stares lifelessly, and gestures.

All of the fire's energy, which she had become, disperse. It violates the laws of physics. It's just gone. And Nadia with it

«Flame chick»

Joe catches her unawares, and knocks her out. She seems sort of frail. Meanwhile, Khan sees all the suicide "victims" in the warehouse…and another guy, who's just climbing out of a hole.

"Thanks, Nadia, I-" I was in the middle of breathing a nice, long sigh of relief - Nadia came just in time. But, all the sudden, she's just…gone. Poof. Maybe she turned into air?

"Nadia?" I call out, looking around, sending out some dust to see if I can feel her moving about.

"I told you not to concern yourself," he says, punching him rapidly.

"Hey!Getoffofhim!"

Sara says running at Quicksilver, trying to match speed with speed and start punching at his kidneys while hoping to trip him up in Joe's defense.

"Pickonsomeoneyourownspeed!"

Khan's needles drop the man, and everything else stops. Maria collapses on the ground crying, and the dirt is removed from Pester.

"He said it was going to be okay…" says Maria. "But he…controlled us. He was in our heads. Oh my God, what I did…how can anyone forgive me?"

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings

«Before my last post»

Quicksilver's actually far faster than Sara now, and avoids her decently, although she gets licks in. Joe's blast knocks both of them down, but not hard. When the man drops, Pietro seems very confused.

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings

No, I mean…you can't kill Nadia, right? Not when she's in her forms, at least. I mean, you can't kill water or fire or anything. But…but if your power is controlling fire, and Nadia was made of fire, and you control her and puffed her out…that's…

Nadia's dead. Nadia's dead because she tried to save me. She's gone and I don't know how to bring her back or where she is or anything.

And these guys are responsible for that.

I turn towards the nearest bad guy I see - just so happens to be Quicksilver, and he's beating on Joe. I don't even care why. Right now, I just… I have to do something. Anything. This has to end right now.

"You. Stop." I point towards Quicksilver and make the earth beneath him collapse and crack - doesn't matter how fast he is, he still needs to run on the ground.

The guy seems unconscious to Khan. Not much remarkable about him. Never seen him before.

Add Roxy to the Quicksilver beating.

And Maria just looks at Joe. "I…I…think I killed somebody…"

"…no."

Maria can't stop crying.

"Why did I do that? Why did I fall for that stupid stupid thing?"

Everyone else seems very apologetic as well, except for Quicksilver, who looks like he has no idea what's going on.

"Hush. 's over now." Joe walks over to the unconscious man and looks down at him.

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings

I run towards Quicksilver and have the earth swallow him to the waist, trying to keep him still - I know we have other things to worry about here, I know there are important matters, but my friend might…she might be dead. I have a question to ask. "Hey, you're a superhero, right? You were, whatever, you know stuff. My friend just turned into fire, and then that girl that controls fire made her disappear - what happened to her?"

Darya hugs Roxanne. She's silent, she lets her scream.

What is it like when somebody dies? It's a tear in your heart, it seems to last forever, and then… when you think it's gone, it opens up again.

She was too young for this…

Re: Gen M #10: …With Butterfly Wings
Post by admin on Jan 18, 2008, 1:55am

It's wrong. It's so wrong. I think I could handle Nadia dying - I mean, yes, it would be tough, but I could take it in the end. I could survive.

But this way - she's just gone. So sudden. One second she's pulling my butt out of the fire, the next - gone. Just gone. Instant. Not a scream. Not a goodbye. Nothing.

I just kind of lay against Darya. I can't even cry right now. It just…hurts.
