Gathering Of Heroes

AGE OF APOCALYPSE PRELUDE - THE GATHERING OF HEROES

The gathering of heroes

All right, I plan on opening this up tomarrow morning. I think I have a handle on how to put everything together at this point :)Re: The gathering of heroes

Heaven - just before closing time.

Warren Worthington emerges from the back rooms to survey the main room. As always, he is surprised by the sheer variety he gets here. A few of Sinister's men hover around the bar. Alex Summers tries to be casual about it, but he is having a relationship with one of Warren's flatscan dancers. Wonder what Ol' Apocalpyse would think of that…

Scattered around the room are the people he's been waiting for. But, also he sees some of Apocalypse's men, so he knows he has to be careful. Particularly obvious as Partisan and Swelter. Two psychos who would probably sell out their mother to the X-Men if they could get the right price for her.

"The X-Men…" Warren thinks with a small smile, "in a different world…I was one of the first X-Men." He shakes his head. Ridiculous. But, the possibilities of a world without Apocalypse was…intriging to say the least.

Over at the pool table, the flatscan Steve Hunter flexes his muscles, trying to intimidate a group of nasty looking mutants into raising their bets against a lowly flatscan. A fight will probably break out. It always does around Hunter, and Warren would not bet against him when he starts swinging his pool cue. That is Hunter's legend, and he does everything possible to make sure everyone knows this. Warren jots down a mental note to have Null deal with Hunter next time he's in the area.

In the far corner of the room, Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright sits muttering to himself, or perhaps some invisible creature only he could see. Warren knows that is probably not his real name, but these days who can tell. It is rare to see Tiger come out this far in the real world, but a few whispered suggestions in the right place go a long way with a man who's always hearing voices.

Another man trying not to be noticed is "The Stoic Heart." He's watching Apocalypse's men very carefully. He probably plans to make a move, but he's planning out his every move well in advance. In his mind, the fight is already over, and he is moving closer to getting Apocalypse. Foolish way to see the world, Angel reflects. Apocalypse sees everything…or at least he thinks he does. Warren hopes that Apocalypse is wrong or Heaven will end up becoming a charnel house.

A beautiful Hispanic woman wearing flashy colors dancing in the center of the room with seemingly wild abandon. Her body moves very fluidly, almost unnaturally so. Her eyes seem to be hiding untold mysteries. Pain and joy seem to be battling for control. But, Warren can't help but notice her eyes roving towards Partisan and Swelter. The two of them are drawing a lot of strange attention.

This is stark contrast to the large figure of Rose. Rose looks like she is constantly mourning. Black clothes from head to toe. She's shakes her head at the brightly colored dancer. Rose has no time for such frivilousness. It's a shame because the two of them are going to have to work together to have any chance.

Warren notices that Torment is also broading in Heaven tonight. He wonders briefly if Rose and Torment would make a good couple, but rejects playing match maker. No time for that, not tonight. Angel has always wondered if Torment's powers would work on Apocalypse…well maybe in a few days we would get to find out.

Vaughan was a new arrival in town. Angel did not know anything about him, and that made Warren very uncomfortable. He definitely had a chip on his shoulder, but against who it was not always clear.

Warren motions to Casey, his most loyal employee to keep a close watch on Vaughan. Casey nods wordlessly and moves into position. He knows what Warren wants almost instictively. Warren loves Casey like a son, but he also knows that if the choice came between Casey's life and even the slightest chance of power, he would take power every time.

Warren's sources have told him that Blight has been seen in the area, but he does not step foot in here anymore. Not since the time he killed four of Heaven's dancers just because it amused him. It took long negotiations with Apocalypse to keep that monster out of this place, but he was really having a disasterous effect on business.

The last person that interested Warren had just entered the building. And perhaps the most important. Viola Drummond. "Damn," Warren whispered, realizing that she had not brought her brother with her. That would have saved him a lot of trouble. Oh well, that just means will have to be done the hard way. «There was a barman, though at most bars I've seen, the owner will serve drinks. Warren would probably do it in this situation as he is trying to gauge everyone in the bar»Re: The gathering of heroes

Marisol gently plopped down on a barstool.
"So what kind of beverages do you serve here?" she asked the angel behind the counter. The unremarkable-looking barman had left for parts unknown as soon as the owner had entered.

She had the thought that she might have come here at the wrong time, though she didn't exactly know when the happy hour was. There did seem to be a few of Apocalypse's men afoot though. The quiet, armored ones stuck out immediately - who would wear armor in a bar? - and she could clearly see an Alpha-mutant talking with the red-headed dancer. She noted it as potentially important, but concluded that these wouldn't be the best people to work with…

"Seriously. Apparently you guys don't have the mutant power of always hitting the target or something. I think I've got enough here for a couple more games, but then again, it's not like I really need ante against you. How about…hm, I haven't had decent food in a while. I'm sure you guys could supply some of that, right? As ante of course. And I know you want another try against the flatscan. Let's say…a day's rations. And the good stuff, not the 'on the road' crap."Re: The gathering of heroes
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on 1 Dec, 2006, 19:40

Warren puts on his most charming smile, "Whatever you desire can be found here." Warren pretends to wipe down the bar, but his eyes are on Marisol alone, "So, I've never seen you hear before. Are you looking for a job? Your dancing was drawing attention away from my other girls." Re: The gathering of heroes
Post by Michael "Chi" Placio on 1 Dec, 2006, 19:43

The largest mutant of the group is glaring at Hunter, "A day's rations?" He mulls it over, but says, "All right. You've got a game. But, I break this time."

(That picture of Marisol looks cool, btw)Re: The gathering of heroes
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on 1 Dec, 2006, 19:45

"I doubt I'd be looking for the kind of job you're offering," replied Marisol with a vague smile, "Besides, I wouldn't like being holed up here all the time. I like to travel…"

She let her eyes wander over the bottles on the shelves behind the counter.
"Can't deny I could use it, though. I'm afraid I don't have any money…"

«Money IS the currency used, right? Seems kind of strange…»Re: The gathering of heroes

Believe it or not, I’ve been accused of brooding too much sometimes. Yeah, I know, huge stretch.

It’s not like I don’t get the complaint; I don’t talk much, I don’t socialize if I can get away with, I don’t have a whole lot to be happy about…really, nobody does. I try to keep a low-profile, and if that means wearing dark clothes and sitting around in dark places and NOT dancing around like a complete idiot, well, tough.

Which brings me to my current place and my current problem. Me and this weird girl I met in Canada, Abacus, borrowed – actually, it was more like she beat up the previous owner and we stole the thing – a transport and headed north, making our way into New York City. We had to ditch the thing after this accident with a squirrel that I won’t get into, but we’re here, we’re alive, and we’re just hanging around for the moment. Abacus is setting up a few things with some people on the underground, getting us a place to sleep for the night, and I came down to Angel’s Heaven, hoping that I could spot a woman name Moonstar, who I’d love to have a long, long talk with.

So far, no Moonstar. Just a lot of annoyance.

There’s not a lot of smiles around Angel’s Heaven because there’s not a lot to smile about. Gloomy. Dark. Depressing. The same general atmosphere that the rest of the planet has. But there’s this one woman wearing this bright outfit, so inappropriate, hurts my eyes just to look her way. And if that wasn’t bad enough, she was dancing. Dancing.

I’m so glad I can put that last part in the past tense; she gives it a rest and moves over to the bar, talking to the bartender…with wings. They strike up a bit of a conversation, and I can’t help but notice that she’s noticing the armored Apocalypse troops that are mulling around the bar. Not sure what that means for her, but I know that could mean a little trouble for me; I probably don’t rank high on Apocalypse’s radar, but it’s not something I want to chance. Figure it’s time to get some information and make myself scarce.

I move over to the bar and take a seat; don’t want to interrupt Angel-Boy and Dancing-Lass, but I’ll ask about Moonstar when I see the chance…

"Works for me." I hand the cue over to the mutant, but keep my hand on it for a little longer after he grabs it. "Just make sure…no funny business. No powers. I want you to lose fair and square."

I let go of the stick.

"Actually, I take that back. Go ahead and use them if you have to. You still won't win."

[Sure, no problem.]

It takes a moment to sink in, and I'm a little ashamed because I should really, really be able to remember a guy with wings, but he does look sort of familiar. "You're…Warren, right?" Think I met him in the middle of a brawl with some Infinites a year or two back. Nice to know I left an impression. "Nice seeing you." It is, really; he's got this light about him that you don't see much. Not into guys at the moment, but if I was, I wouldn't mind going for a few things. He felt a chance to get where he's going couldn't be far behind that. Humiliating though, that it may come to him in a dive like this.

Sephula glanced around, keeping tabs on as many people as he could, and taking careful note of the movements of everyone in his view. Taking only the briefest moment to look behind him for the nearest shadow, he looked forwards again and walked backwards into it. At that, he bent the shadow to conceal him completely.

Child, scion, usurper of the mindscape… What plans have you with this place? What task have you wrought for yourself to-

Quiet. I'm trying to think.

Watching the dogs of Apocalypse that were scattered across Heaven, he concentrated on as many as he could see. He owed Warren… so he wouldn't start a fight in here if he could help it. But just in case he couldn't…

Sephula systematically and slowly drained all of the soldiers that he could see as much as he could without making it immediately noticeable. With another motion, he rolled a tiny sphere into the centre of his view-point silently. He covered it in subtle shadow so it wouldn't be noticed.

Sephula looked at Warren, and actually felt tangs of regret and guilt for what he was doing, as it meant that he wasn't particularly commited to preventing a fight from taking place.

Oh well. I'll make it up to him.

And then he noticed another of Apocalypse's dogs sitting in front of Warren at the bar. And he watched him with vested interest.Re: The gathering of heroes

"Problem?" Tiger snaps, turning wildly. "The poison in this world? The very human condition…the ignorance spreads like wildfire through the hearts of man? What is the Divine Image of today?" He pulls a scrap of paper from the sleeve of his robe—by the looks of it one of several, and he reads aloud, in a grandiose tone, "Cruely has a Human Heart / And Jealousy a Human Face, / Terror, the Human Form Divine, / And Secrecy the Human Dress. / The Human Dress is forged Iron, / The Human Form a fiery Forge, / The Human Face, a Furnace seal'd, / The Human Heart its hungry Gorge."

He slips the paper back into his sleeve, and clears his throat. "This, children of the earth's fruit, is what we have come to worship today, what we have been ruled by, and what we have succumbed to. We have descended into the depths of Ulro, and the imagination is enslaved not by Urizen, but by En Sabah Nur."Re: The gathering of heroes

He appears to be offering to refill drinks, but he is actually slipping notes to various people scattered around the bar: Steve Hunter, Tiger Burning Bright, The Stoic Heart, Torment, Vaughan, and lastly Viola.

All of the notes say something along the lines of, "You can't be too happy with the shape of the world. I know a way to change it. Back alley of Heaven, an hour after closing time." Re: The gathering of heroes
Post by Marisol "Solidity" Morales on 1 Dec, 2006, 21:25

"It's sad what alcohol can do to someone," said Marisol. Well, it was hardly that simple…

I shrug. "Poetry was never my bag, really. Part of me wanted to get into it. But running from Infinites and Marauders doesn't really leave much time for hobbies." I fill up another glass.

I look down at the note that the guy who likes to keep his eyes open dropped in my lap. The fact that it's very blurry tells me that I'm more drunk than I feel. A couple moments of hard staring makes the words stop running together.

"Oh you've got to be kidding me." I mutter under my breath.Re: The gathering of heroes
Post by Pester/Freaktada on 1 Dec, 2006, 21:31

Intrigued by the note, Torment makes a mental note to survey the alley 15 minutes before closing time, just to get a look at the landscape. If these idiots think they can change the world, maybe watching would be good for a laugh. It's doubtful they could make things any worse for him in the long run, so he'd play their little game.

Despite hating him with a passion, Torment actually does feel sorry for the rambling mess standing near the bar. He likely didn't choose to be a drooling maniac… Torment is reminded of his own time as a creature of contempt before he found his pride.Re: The gathering of heroes

Sephula stepped out of the shadow for barely a moment and began to head into Warren's direction to talk to him briefy, when someone bumped into him, and something was pressed into his hand. He stepped back into the shadows and read it.

Good eye. I only emerged a moment before. And this note…

Considering the note, Sephula began walking towards the bar. As he walked, taking deliberate, proud steps, he deflected the light hitting him, manipulating it into moving around him instead of straight as light typically would. This kept him invisible until he reached the bar.

Still surveying the area, Torment notices a man seemingly disappear in the middle of his stride, then reappear a few seconds later only a few feet away. If he had just reappeared instantly, then he'd likely be a teleporter. As it happened there, he must have the power to make himself disappear, or something else light related.

Torment makes a mental note of this.Re: The gathering of heroes

Warren opens the back door of the club to a motley collection of characters standing outside, "Come on in." He leads them up to his office, where Rose and Solidity are waiting for them. No one knows what to expect here.

Meanwhile, a few minutes later, down in the alley. Partisan and Swelter are in the alleyway with another individual. Partisan looks at this mysterious figure and says, "You have a lock on them." I'll give Warren credit for having his shit straightened, no doubt there. Everyone's so confident, so intense, so ready to just leap into this, but me…it's weird, but I'm still thinking about Moonstar more than anything. I understand that, if this works, my family will be alive again. I get that thing will change, that it'll be like this world never existed. "Look… Rose? It is Rose, right? First thing, your point about Apocalypse lackeys? Didn't help whatever point you were trying to make. But for the record? I don't have any problem with any of you guys. I do, however, have trust issues. Vast experience has taught me that it is far too easy for someone to stab you in the back, especially when Apocalypse is involved. Warren is one of the only people in this world that I feel I can trust, and when he says that even he doesn't know whether to trust you guys, then I need to be on my guard. Don't hold it against me.
