Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 23, 2007, 4:33pm

Nicolette's conversation with Starbolt had left her deeply disturbed, and had once again shown her how much she underestimated the importance of popular culture and the media. Well, it was only natural considering how little weight she had put in it her whole life.

She didn't know much about television and movies, she could… admit that. But perhaps it would be useful to look into it a little while on the Juber. After all, it could teach her a lot.

She sat down in the Lounge and activated the futuristic-looking 3D television in front of her.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 12:43pm

Kalvin wanders into the Lounge looking to get a drink, his attention is drawn Nicolette…watching TV?

"Nicolette?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 12:47pm

Nicolette glanced at him and grunted grumpily.
"Hey, Kalvin."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 12:48pm

Kalvin gets his drink and moves closer to her.

"What are you watching?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 12:49pm

"Nothing specific. I'm looking for anti-human propaganda." She managed an innocent smile. "Where's my drink?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 12:54pm

Kalvin glances at his drink.

"Probably over there." He points to the bar with his free hand. "Why do you want anti-human stuff?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 12:56pm

"Tsk, I don't want it, I want to verify it myself. Starbolt told me humans aren't looked upon very kindly in the Shi'ar media. Would you be so kind to get me a drink?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 12:57pm

Kalvin grumbles but wanders over and gets Nic a drink.

"Can you blame them? One of us killed Oracle…"

He hands her the drink.

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:00pm

"Thank you," said Nicolette with a brilliant smile and a flutter of eyelashes. She took a sip. "It's not really that, apparently. Or even the Phoenix. I'm told they seem to consider us stupid…"

She took personal offense at that.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:01pm

"Well that's certainly uncalled for."

Kalvin smirks.

"We're smarter than most Shi'ar."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:02pm

"Huh? What are you guys doing?"

Kara walked in.

"Never struck me as the couch potatoing type Nico."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:02pm

"How do you figure? That would take widespread testing to determine."

She turned towards Kara.

"Oh, hey. And I'm not, really. I've watched very little television my whole life…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:06pm

"So? I think it's pretty clear by the way they act."

He turns to Kara.

"I don't think we've met."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:06pm

"And how's that? How do they act?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:07pm

"Let me guess, parents right?"

Looking at the television.

"Shi'ar television kind of interesting, personally I like Space M'Badi, kind of cooky at times, but it's a fun show. Death may come, but my ambitions will live on!"

Then she giggles.

"Quote from the show. Roughly translated into english."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:07pm

"You know…the whole thing with Nadia's trial? That was ridiculous."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:08pm

To Kalvin.

"I don't think we have stranger."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:09pm

"Kalvin Richmond." He nods at her.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:10pm

"Kara Saldin, although most people call me Ghost, because well… I'm a ghost."

Raising her hand to offer a handshake, with a cheerful smile.

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:10pm

"Oh, come on, Kalvin. Humans have behaved just like that. Besides, not only was the incident a bad marker of average Shi'ar IQ, Nadia would have been released if not for Deathbird."

She patted a space next to her on the couch for Kara to sit.

"And, no, my parents didn't forbid it for me. Not directly, at least. I just never developed an interest."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:12pm

Kalvin shakes Kara's hand firmly.

"Nice to meet you."

Back to Nic.

"It was a good enough scale to judge it with. A good portion of them are willing to follow Deathbird."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:14pm

Nicolette smiled.
"By that logic, humans would be stupid too, wouldn't they? Don't say we've never chosen to follow bad leaders."

There were a lot of good examples for this in history, but she was mainly thinking of Rapt.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:14pm

"I suppose you're right about that." Kalvin takes a sip of his drink.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:16pm

Ghost doesn't really feel the handshake, she can't really feel anything, she's focusing on not gripping too hard. She doesn't really know the extent of her strength, sure she won't be bending steel anytime soon but still better safe than sorry.

"They're a naturally aggressive species the Shi'ar. Their history's riddled with it. Think of them as Romulans with a bit of Klingon."

Sitting on the couch.

"Oh look, that's the scene where M'badi get tossed in space without a spacesuit and survives using Martial arts techniques, always cracks me up."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:17pm

"It's all relative," said Nicolette cheerily, "And by making judgments like that, you're perpetuating the same ignorance I'm here to find. I actually considered trying to take legal action, but decided it wasn't a good idea."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:18pm

"What are Romulans and Klingons?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:19pm

"Legal action against what or who?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:20pm

"Oh, I forgot. Star Trek aliens. Klingons are aggressive and battle oriented, high beliefs in honor. Romulans are lying, scheming, politically savvy aliens. Smart, tough, and mean. Quite arrogant too."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:23pm

Nicolette nodded at Kara, though the information mostly passed through her.
"The Chandilar Communications Corporation controls most of the media," she told Kalvin.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:26pm

Kalvin chuckles at the Star Trek comments. "Been a long time since I watched Star Trek."

Back to Nic again. "What could you do?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:28pm

"Hopefully, to softly prove them wrong and perpetuate a more positive depiction."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:28pm

"Heh, still remember when it first came out, it may be old now, but it was awesome back then. I remember joining the petition to name the next space shuttle the Enterprise."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:28pm

"…how old are you?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:30pm

"I forget. Then again age gets kinda wonky when you're me. What are you guys talking about anyways?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:30pm

"Nicolette is thinking about suing someone or something."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:30pm

"The negative stereotype of humans in the Shi'ar media. And I said I decided not to sue…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:35pm

"Aww… Suing them might've been funny. Negative stereotyping on humans huh? You mean like that commercial?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:36pm

Nicolette looked at the 'screen'.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:42pm

"As for that. Well what do ya expect? We've hardly come in contact with them. We're outsiders, they know we have a lack of technology, they hardly know anything else about us, and we look strange to them. Don't tell me we wouldn't have done the same thing."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:42pm

"Er, what commercial? The current one?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 1:44pm

"A phone line so easy, even a Terran can use it. It's actually kinda funny ignoring blatant racism."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Kalvin "Apex" Richmond on Aug 24, 2007, 1:44pm

"That's…wow."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 1:47pm

Nicolette 'harrumph'-ed.
"Social engineering isn't very easy, unfortunately. But I'm convinced that we can improve the image of our race by our own actions. It has worked slightly already."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 2:01pm

"Well it'll probably take large scale social integration of both of us and years and years worth of effort to permanently change that status quo. Just like how it's done on earth. As long as we're part of the out-group there's an extent of what we'll be able to change on our own."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 2:04pm

"I disagree. We're in a position to be very prominent, and thus have a greater effect. The Imperial Guard are seen as heroes in the whole Imperium, and we're just a step removed… so far. We've made quite an impression on the crew of this ship already."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 2:11pm

"Or it may just change stereotype. The Chinese used be considered weak and sickly, then Bruce Lee rose to prominence, what did that do? It made everybody believe Chinese people know martial arts. Certainly it's better than the sickly image but it's still rather undesirable. We'll probably just change things so we're stereotyped either fearless heroes or on the pessimistic side as a bunch of wild-battle crazy yahoo's instead, heh. As long as they don't know about us, haven't met us, they'll just keep assuming things about us. Racism stems from ignorance. The only cure to that is knowledge."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 2:15pm

"Who's… ah, never mind. Some amount of stereotyping is unavoidable - there are too many various cultures and social groups for everyone to know the 'truth'. It's not exactly something we'd want, but not necessarily negative. The best we can do is try to remove the racism from the equation to the best of our ability and inform people."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 2:25pm

"Well I'm not saying it won't be a start. But it'll take years to permanently change things."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 2:27pm

"Well, of course. But you can just plant the seed and let it grow… If you convince just a set of influential people - such as the editors of an important TV station, for instance - they will slowly start to help."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 24, 2007, 2:28pm

"More political manipulation I see…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 24, 2007, 2:40pm

"Political? I wouldn't say so."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 10:46am

"Pulling strings, getting influence. You can't deny a similarity, how are you going to do that anyways?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 10:49am

Nicolette shrugged.
"I'm not sure yet. But I might have a possible connection already… One of the CCC's reporters is stationed on the Juber."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 10:57am

"Oh, you mean the K'lar kid?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 10:58am

"Mmmmmhm. He could be…" She wanted to say 'useful'. "…helpful."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 11:01am

"Well he's enthusiastic I give you that."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 11:04am

"Of course," mused Nicolette, "It might help if I bumped into someone relatively important of the CCC on Chandilar, 'by chance'…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 11:05am

"Leave me out of your crazy crazy schemes."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 11:32am

Nicolette laughed.
"I don't know if you're joking or not, but don't worry."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 11:41am

"Well if you really are going to try that, let hope it works…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 11:48am

Nicolette turned back towards the TV.
"So, you've watched a lot of Shi'ar television then? Should have known…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 11:51am

"Huh? Well I wouldn't say alot. Still is interesting at times."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 11:52am

"How different is it from Earth television? I wouldn't really know…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 11:54am

"Surprisingly similar. Some rather crazy programs on though. For instance the Space M'badi show right now. Kinda the tip of the ice berg."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 11:55am

"What's it about?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 11:57am

"Well you already saw the scene where he survives in space with only martial arts techniques. It's based off the life an historical Shi'ar hero and his crew, although it really really exaggerates things. Kind of reminds me of old pulp novels put on television."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 11:58am

"Hmm. Yes, I actually wondered how they'd handle what we know as science fiction…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 12:06pm

"Simply put they don't, or at least I haven't seen any."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 12:09pm

"It's, ah, a pity, I guess." She didn't really care. "You'd think a highly advanced civilization would be able to explore it much more deeply. I guess they've simply seen too much. But then again, superhero comics are still popular on Earth, despite the real heroes… I believe."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 12:21pm

"Waning. But they have their hold. It'd be kind of hard though, telling apart their science fiction from the real thing."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 12:48pm

"True… unless it involved a much higher level of technology. Where do you think the limit is?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 25, 2007, 1:29pm

"Hmmm… Science fiction has been always a combination of imagination and theoretical principals. A limit? Not sure. Guess our species is ideal for that kind of stuff, lots of imagination and theoretical exploration with no way to prove them."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 25, 2007, 1:39pm

"I'm sure there are many species with many different kinds of fiction. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of things they could think up, what genres humans could never have thought of…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 26, 2007, 1:08am

"Hmm… Possibly. Would overthrow the term, every idea has been done before."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 26, 2007, 1:14am

"Every idea that a human mindscape can come up with, at least."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 26, 2007, 1:20am

"Maybe, culturally we probably won't be able to fully appreciate it anyways. Won't hold the same meaning to us. Same with everything, but with alien culture moreso."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 26, 2007, 1:22am

"It would still be something new and unique to us."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 26, 2007, 1:25am

"Or completely incomprehensible in motives or actions. Interesting, I give you that though. Maybe the library has something like that."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 26, 2007, 1:27am

"Perhaps. I'd check it out, but… I don't really feel like it. Television really isn't my forte.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 26, 2007, 1:34am

"Crappy parents."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 26, 2007, 1:36am

Nicolette grunted an agreement.

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 26, 2007, 1:46am

"Well with your parents gone you can try these things if you want. No one's stopping you now. Everything with you seems business oriented now that I think of it."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 26, 2007, 1:49am

"Not everything, surely. And it's not like my parents forbid me from watching TV or anything, they just… discouraged it."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 27, 2007, 1:28am

"Well the only reason you're watching TV now is to see racial stereotypes on humans."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 27, 2007, 1:30am

"Well, I agree with them on one matter - there's not much of a point. I'd rather do something more productive, like work."

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 27, 2007, 1:31am

"See! Gotcha there! I don't mean that you have to sit around and watch TV all day, but you gotta have fun once and a while."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 27, 2007, 1:32am

"I have fun…" said Nicolette, a little defensively.

Re: Discovery…

"You're a workaholic admit it."

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 27, 2007, 1:33am

"If I am, then only a little bit. But so what?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 27, 2007, 1:35am

"Hm… dunno. You managed to raise your rank, you keep striving, hitting books, you never seem… to do anything just for the sake of fun. When was the last time you did something like that?"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 27, 2007, 1:38am

"Work can be fun. Training in the training room certainly can be. But the kind of fun you mean… Well, I was going to go shopping on Chandilar with YT, but… got poisoned and couldn't. Hmm, oh yes, I believe I also went shopping in the starbase the Juber was stationed at for repairs a few months ago.""

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 28, 2007, 1:41am

"Hm… well you should really take a break sometime then, looks like you've haven't in a while, YT? The speedy girl?"

Re: Discovery…

"That's her, yes…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by Joshua/Darya/Kara/Marcus on Aug 29, 2007, 2:24am

"She seems like a nice person, of course the only time I met her she couldn't even see me but…"

Re: Discovery…
Post by BornIn1142 on Aug 29, 2007, 5:48am

"Oh, yes. She's pretty nice. I was happy to have her because, y'know, it was nice to have a girl my age around here. I was tired of just playing older sister."
