Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 8:37am

A still shell-shocked Generation M would wake up about two days after the events of "…With Butterfly Wings" to find Quicksilver grimly preparing them all breakfast. Matthew James is sitting at the table, drinking coffee.

Kelly quietly shuffles into the room and sits down with a glass of milk and a blank expression.

Matthew looks somewhat blankly at Kelly, while Quicksilver continues preparing large amounts of food. Matthew finally says, "I'm sorry about your friend. It was exactly what I was hoping to prevent."

"Please don't talk about Nadia," Kelly responds quietly and politely, staring down at her glass of milk and eventually taking a sip. "We'll find her. She'll be- she'll be fine once we've found her."

Matthew sighs deeply.

"I won't trouble you any further on that, then. I'm here to answer any questions that people have about what happened before your team was called in, I'll tell the whole story when more people show up. But if you have any questions about what happened before, feel free to ask."

"I don't. Thank you," she responds in the same quiet, polite tone as she takes another sip. Only one thing that happened matters to Kelly right now, and she's still trying to figure it out. Or more accurately, how to do something about it.

"I basically missed the entire debacle, so feel free to just tell me everything relevant."

Wreck isn't very perturbed either. Part of him recognizes that if he let himself be, he'd snap. So he just…isn't. Simple defense measure.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 9:46am

Matthew drinks some more coffee, then looks at Wreck.

"Basically, there was this guy who promised people better powers. He had some kind of power that put people in a death-like state for a while, then they'd awaken with better powers. But they were under his control."

Pietro serves Wreck some bacon and pancakes. "That's where I come in," he says. "I saw him advertising for better powers as a danger, and he forcibly used his powers on me. It took a lot out of him, but, essentially, I do not remember the last two weeks at all, except in glimpses."

Matthew nods. "I saw that happen, actually, and I thought he was killing Mr. Maximoff, and I reported it, but then Mr. Maximoff was back, and I looked stupid. But I kept trying to figure out what was going on, but it wasn't really working. I had to beg to get invited to a meeting, and I thought that I could just solve it then. But, getting better powers is tempting for some of us. I know you guys wouldn't understand, but…well, I decided I was going to do it, but that I'd set things up so people could follow in case it didn't work out. I made sure one of the notices was left on the ground at the last meeting, they police those pretty heavily. And the poem. In the end, my telepathy actually made me more resistant than the others to the mind control, so I was able to resist him and let Khan knock him out. Any questions?"

"…why didn't anyone tell the field team?" Joe asks quietly.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 9:49am

"…because you guys don't understand us," says Matthew, looking away.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 9:51am

"Ya'll are upset that you haven't been picked to be on the team, even though lots o' yer powers are just as good as the ones we got. You figger that since we mostly hang out with each other we all look down on you guys and make fun of ya. That a pretty good start?"

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 9:55am

"Yes. That's pretty much the size of it," says Matthew. "Except that some of us have much worse powers than yours. The idea that we could just get an A class power is really…tempting. I don't think any of you would understand. It's like an instant ticket to the field team. And then we'd get bigger rooms, and our own kitchen and meeting rooms, and we could miss classes and…"

He trails off.

"Personally speaking? I've seen what happens when I get more impressive powers. Things die. And by things, I mean everything."

Wreck shrugs.

"It puts a damper on the whole wanting more thing."

"And get killed." Dom finishes for Matt as he walks in, "Don't forget that part."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 9:59am

"You wanna know what it's like on the field team?" Joe says softly, then lifts at his shirt. He points at at the huge, puckered scar on his chest, framed by dozens of smaller ones. "See that? I got that savin' a fiend from a Sentinel. Both nearly died. I've been to Hell before, some of us have been pretty often. I stood and fought Apocalypse and tried not to fall down and crap my pants."

Joe stands up. "People on the field team DIE, Matt. Sometimes they're killed by villains, or they turn bad and have to be killed so they don' t kill us. I had to help kill one of my best friends. And sometimes, Matt, sometimes you die because people want to miss classes and get their OWN KITCHEN!"

Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 9:59am

"But see, you guys don't NEED better powers. You're already on the field team."

Matt seems to be ignoring Dom's statement. Pietro serves everyone food. It's not very good, but he tried hard.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:01am

Matt looks sadly at Joe.

"I didn't mean for any harm to come to anyone. I really didn't. If I'd known that could happen…"

He pauses.

"I probably would have done the same thing. You can be upset at me if you want to be. That's fair."

"You realize that Pester's big power is making people hear show tunes and Dave's big power is making people smell cow manure. There's a gap in your logic."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:03am

"Pester and Dave are the ones we're most jealous of."

Matt looks back at Wreck.

"We really don't understand why they're here and we aren't. But we figured that rather than try to explain it, it would be easier to just get the golden ticket A power. Barry tried to figure out what got Pester on the team, never worked for him."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 10:03am

"Yeah, it is." Joe bites some food savagely off his fork. "It's more than just powers that get you on the team. And personally? I wouldn't care if you were as powerful as Magneto. I wouldn't want someone like you havin' my back." Joe throws down his utensils and storms out.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by deathchicken on Jan 18, 2008, 10:07am

"Pester tries really hard. He once fought me, big bad mutie death machine, to a complete standstill. With his deadly show tune powers. Dave…"

Wreck twirls at his eggs for a beat. Then two. Then three.

"You got me on Dave. But dammit, Pester tries really hard, to the point where his powers have nothing to do with it. He makes do."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:11am

"We've tried to try hard too. Well, some of us have. I don't know. I just…I thought that if I figured it all out and beat the bad guy, that then I'd have to be on the field team. But in the end, it was just all too tempting. I still sort of beat the bad guy."

Matt pauses, stirring his coffee and looking sadly after Joe.

"I really didn't want people to die."

Kelly fixes her gaze onto Matthew.

"Why did you want to be on the field team, Matthew?" she asks in the same quiet tone. The answer from anyone else in the room seems obvious to her, but she doesn't know about him yet.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:28am

Matthew looks sadly at Kelly.

"I thought maybe if I was on the field team, my life would get better. I mean, I see all of you around, and you're always looking like you're having fun, and hanging out together, and the girls are kissing each other, and you know. Everyone seems happy. Except now."

Joe comes back in and throws a set of keys on the table. "There."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»

Matthew raises an eyebrow and looks at Joe. "What's this?"

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 10:36am

"Keys to my old room. You and your roommates are switching with me."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:39am

Matthew shakes his head. "I can't do that. It's…there's a reason you guys have bigger rooms. It's because you have all the training things, and stuff."

He clearly has no idea if there actually is a reason, and is guessing.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 10:41am

"I don't care. Take the room, it's what you wanted. Still not a single, but it's bigger. And there's the kitchen."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:42am

"But what this is all about is how I did the wrong things to get that. I don't deserve it."

He pushes the keys away.

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 10:44am

"No, you don't. But maybe seeing one of the field team roomin' with the rest of ya'll might make it so ya all ain't so bitter."

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:46am

Matt considers this for a few moments.

"You're right, but I have an idea. I don't deserve it, we can agree on that. What if you switched with my roommate? I mean, I know you don't like me, and you shouldn't, but he's done nothing wrong. And I wouldn't be rewarded for doing the wrong thing, but you'd still be trying to do good, right?"

Pester enters the room quietly, and begins eating some of the Quicksilver eggs. A loud crunching can be heard as he discovers a piece of shell.

"Good eggs."

Post by cheshire on Jan 18, 2008, 10:47am

"That'll work. Hope you like dogs. Well, dingos. What's yer room number?"

Re: Denouement «Post Gen M 10 topic»
Post by havok3595 on Jan 18, 2008, 10:51am

Matt says, "Um, I'm not sure a dog would fit in the room, but you're welcome to try. You can have bottom bunk. That might help. It's 112. Right near the fire stair on the first floor."

He pauses.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Meanwhile, Quicksilver gives Pester an approving nod. "I once spent a day reading every cookbook in the New York Public Library. I know my eggs are good."

I walk in, still kind of blanked out, and three kinds of tired - don't even need to say why anymore, do I? I hop up on a chair, but I'm not eating anything. Not really hungry.

"Very. And Rex ain't too big. I'll be by later. Right now I gotta go mourn Nadia." Joe heads out again.

"There's nothing to mourn." I kick the table a little - would do it harder, but I'm not wearing shoes. "Nadia's not dead, she's just…not here."

"Well…" Joe's voice cracks a little bit. "I'm just…gonna go wish she'd come back faster."

I'm feeling less and less comfortable. Time to go fiddle with some electronics.

Pester chokes down gobbles up the rest of his meal, and starts walking.

"Thank you for the food, Mr. Maximoff."
